Fascinating encounters
In addition to the top-class collections of works of German
Expressionism, the museum also offers visitors an exciting journey
into the realms of imagination. The spectrum of Buchheim’s passion
for collecting ranges from a vast number of colorful paperweights to
Buchheim’s »Buffi Circus« and carousel figures through to works by
self-taught artists. And Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s PiPaPop posters
caused quite a sensation in the 1960s.
Cultural excursion to Lake Starnberg
A visit to the Buchheim Museum is a rewarding experience, any
time of the year. Whether in combination with a hike, a swim or a
day of skiing: the Buchheim Museum is always an attractive option.
And during the summer season, museum-goers can also travel to
the Buchheim Museum with the Museum Ship »Phantasie«.

Expedition to world cultures

Unity in diversity
Unusually diverse, top-class, highly original and unique in their mixture:
the collections of the painter, publisher, novelist (»Das Boot«)
and art book author, Lothar-Günther Buchheim (1918 – 2007).
Classic modern artists like Picasso, Chagall, Braque and the German
Expressionists, in particular the painters of the artist group »Brücke«
(1905 – 1913), but also Lovis Corinth, Max Beckmann, Oskar
Kokoschka, Otto Dix and many others fascinated Buchheim just as
much as carousel figures and fairground attractions, paperweights,
curiosities from the workshops of amateur and »naïve« artists,
as well as the art and handicrafts from Africa, Asia, the South Seas
and South America.
A lakeside treasure trove in a glorious natural setting
Located directly on the banks of Lake Starnberg in a sprawling stretch
of parkland, the museum, designed by Günter Behnisch, architect of
the 1972 Munich Olympics, features 3500 square meters of exhibition
space. The twelve-meter deck that extends over the lake provides
visitors with a stunning view that extends to the Alps. The perfect
excursion destination for art lovers and the entire family.
The »Grüne Galerie/Green Gallery« – Buchheim’s private museum
In an old villa in Feldafing, Lothar-Günther Buchheim set up an
incomparably charming private museum that can only be visited

A fresh look at Expressionism & Modern Art
The paintings and works-on-paper of the »Brücke« painters Ernst
Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Max Pechstein,
Emil Nolde and Otto Mueller are exhibited in changing presentations.
Special exhibitions shed light on new work complexes of classic
modern art.
Modern Art in Germany
Visitors are provided with an impressive overview of »Brücke« art,
which signals the start of modern art in Germany. Commonalities and
distinctive differences among the individual artists are also highlighted,
as is the inter-relation between the watercolors, drawings, prints
and paintings.
