Dear Future Fraternity Men,
As the birthplace of the American college fraternity,
the fraternity community at the College seeks to honor
its rich history while anticipating an even greater
future. The fraternities at the College celebrate the
traditions and the innovations that have led us from
1776 to 2012.
On a campus steeped in tradition, fraternity life stands
out. We believe that the fraternity experience has the
potential to offer more value to your undergraduate
experience than any other club or organization. With
countless opportunities for personal and professional
development, fraternity membership can have an
extraordinary impact on your life. We hope that
you will consider taking advantage of this amazing
opportunity that has been a great experience for both
of us.
Fraternities are united in their aim to maintain a
similar set of core values including scholarship,
service, brotherhood, and leadership. The fraternity
experience integrates these values into your life, but
in slightly different ways depending on the chapter. In
order to find the right chapter for you, we encourage
you to meet members from as many chapters as
possible. With many different chapters at the College,
you are bound to find one that is right for you.

A Tradition
since 1776
William & Mary is the
birthplace of the American
college fraternity. The
first Greek-letter society,
Phi Beta Kappa, was
founded at the College
on December 5, 1776.
The earliest members
introduced several core
values such as service,
brotherhood, and freedom
of intellectual pursuits.
Modern fraternities seek to
uphold these same values
along with other values
such as honor, justice,
achievement, and virtue.
Brotherhood
Brotherhood provides a support structure that becomes a “home away from home”.
The bonds of brotherhood that are formed and fostered during one’s college years grow
stronger over time, serving as a basis for lifelong friendships.
Scholarship
Each organization aims to enhance the academic experiences of its members. Excellence
in academics is encouraged and celebrated through various recognition and incentive
programs implemented by each chapter and the fraternity community as a whole.

Join the Tradition
Building New
Traditions
The fraternity experience offers
countless opportunities for initiating
new traditions that will forward the
community and its members. In the
spring of 2011, the College announced
plans to build new fraternity housing.
The new housing will feature 12
buildings to open in fall 2013. This is
one of many exciting new developments
as fraternity life continues to flourish at
William & Mary.
Service
Multiple philanthropic and service
efforts are hosted and promoted by
the fraternity community each year
both at an individual chapter and
a community level. The fraternity
and sorority community has a long
standing partnership with the Arc of
Greater Williamsburg which serves
individuals with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Working
together on a philanthropy or service
project benefits a worthy cause and
fosters personal growth and unity
within the community.

Leadership
“My leadership experiences were made possible to me
in large part due to the relationships I have developed
from being a fraternity man. Both in support in
student body elections as well as in networking with
other leaders on campus, my fellow fraternity men
have done a lot to support me and the overall mission

Fraternity membership offers a
unique opportunity to develop and
practice leadership skills. In order
for these organizations to function,
they rely on individuals to hold
positions of leadership and share their
time, talents, and energy. Fraternity
men also serve as leaders outside of
the fraternity community, holding
positions such as: Undergraduate
Honor Council members, Orientation
Aides, student government
representatives, and class officers.
