Bonne Nuit Harbour Festival 2009
Saturday 18th
A community festival for all the family taking place at Bonne Nuit
Harbour. The day will include a fancy dress procession down to the
bay by children from St John’s school, followed by a performance from
the school African drum band. Games on the beach, including a “Sand
Castle” competition and “Find the Buried Treasure” as well as a “Hay
Bale Adventure” site and a “Tug-of-War” competition. Also taking place
will be “Bonnie-Baby”, “Knobbly Knees” and “Miss Bonne Nuit Harbour
Festival” competitions along with a “Bonne Nuit Tucker Trial”. Live
music throughout the day from up and coming local bands and stalls
selling local produce. The bay will be shut to traffic during the day, with
a minibus shuttle service operating from the primary parking location,
which is a large field at La Platons. Admission will be £2 for adults.
Walk the Walk Walking Festival
Saturday 18th – Friday 24th
For the first time, Blue Badge Guides Tom Bunting and Paul Nicolle
invite you to “Walk the Walk” whilst they “Talk the Talk” on a series
of 10 short walks, around St Helier and further afield. Designed
to amuse and inform, why not learn about the rich history, diverse
buildings and sculpture in Jersey’s vibrant capital or explore the
picturesque village of Gorey with its impressive medieval castle and
venture though the verdant valley of St Peter to one of Jersey’s top
attractions, The Jersey War Tunnels.
Tickets are £5 per walk or a week ticket valid for all walks costs just

Jersey Farm and Craft Night Markets
While away a couple of hours browsing the market stalls at the
Jersey Farm and Craft Markets held every other Thursday evening
in the new open space at Weighbridge Place. The markets run
from 17:00 - 20:00 and you will find a selection of homemade
gifts for friends and family or simply treat yourself
to something nice. On sale will be a range of
crafts such as jewellery, greeting cards, textiles,
photographs and paintings together with some local
produce including locally made sausages, fresh fish
and shellfish, home-made cakes and confectionery.
Stay a while to enjoy the live music and have a bite to
eat as the sun sets on a relaxing day.

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust
No visit to Jersey is complete without a day at Durrell Wildlife
Conservation Trust, where you can see over 1400 mammals, birds,
reptiles and amphibians in 32 acres of beautiful gardens and parkland.
Among the endangered species at Durrell are three generations of
Sumatran orangutans; mighty “Ya Kwanza”, the 35 stone Western
Lowland gorilla and his family, a Madagascan gentle lemur community;
Brazilian black-lion tamarins and silvery marmosets in open woodland.
Durrell’s safely enclosed, animal-themed play area is perfect for
youngsters. At the Education Centre, children can enjoy close encounters
with reptiles and enjoy books, jigsaws and other play equipment. Don’t
forget the gift shop with a treasure trove of presents, plus
our fabulous buffet style Dodo Restaurant.
Famous author, naturalist and broadcaster Gerald Durrell
founded the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust 50 years
ago with the mission to save endangered wild animals from
extinction; his park is the Trust’s international headquarters
and plays a crucial role in this mission. Here conservationists
work closely with the animals to better understand what is
required to ensure they survive in their natural habitats. This
information is shared with colleagues working on wild animal
projects worldwide.
In 2009 Durrell is 50 years old. So while Durrell is organising a
special day to celebrate 50 years of existence, the Trust is also
using this significant landmark as the reason to engage with all
audiences, to ensure another 50 years of success for the Trust.
Durrell has achieved so much. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. With
the planet’s biodiversity in peril, what we all do to contribute to the earth’s
health and wellbeing, including the protection and maintenance of vital species
worldwide, will be critical.
Therefore, Durrell’s 50th birthday message is loud and clear – “It’s Time”.

Durrell Day, on Sunday 12th July, is set to be one of
the highlights of the summer, as the Trust looks to thank
Jersey residents for their passionate support over the
past 50 years, enabling Durrell to continue to work to
save species from extinction. The wildlife park
will be divided into four zones for the day:
Jersey, Durrell Memorabilia, Conservation
and Corfu Zones, enabling visitors to enjoy
new experiences as well as the wide variety of
animals and stunning grounds.
Exciting activities for the day include den
building, a Genuine Jersey fair, walks and talks
with Durrell experts, a memorabilia exhibition and
Greek themed food and drink in celebration of
Gerald Durrell’s childhood home, Corfu.

Heavy Machine-Gun Turret Bunker
One of the few surviving examples, named
“sechsschartentürme” (literally “six-shooting turret”)
bunkers once proliferated along the Atlantic Wall. It is
possible to access the interior of the cupola, equipped
with a deactivated MG34 machine-gun, and peer
through the optics to see a landscape viewed as a
potential invasion point by the German garrison.

The command post for the naval coastal artillery
battery “Lothringen” was located here. The bunker has
been restored to a very high standard and provides a

This bunker has been restored as fully as possible to
its original condition, and displays and exhibits provide
ample guidance for the workings of this unique weapon.

Gun Casemate
This is the only bunker in a bay area to retain its original
gun and contains many other contemporary fixtures
and fittings. Featuring several photographic exhibitions

Built on an island in the middle of St Aubin’s Bay,
Elizabeth Castle has defended Jersey from the French
for more than 300 years. Built in 1590 the castle was
once the home of Sir Walter Raleigh, the Governor of
Jersey. Climb the battlements and explore the rocky
ledge where the hermit, St Helier, is alleged to have
lived. Roam the exhibitions explaining the role of
the castle in Jersey’s history. See history come alive,
experience a soldier’s life, join the Gunner’s parade,
and stand to attention as he fires the cannon each
day between 10am and 3.30pm.

The tunnel complex, formerly known as Höhlgangsanlage
8 (Ho8) now plays host to a series of thought provoking
contemporary exhibitions detailing the German
Occupation of Jersey during the Second World War.
Explore over a kilometre of underground tunnels that
took three years to build by a workforce of hundreds of
forced and slave labourers. Visitors will be led through
events of evacuation, deportation, captivity and siege,
to eventual liberation. Audio guides available in English,
French and German.

A medieval chapel sits on top of this prehistoric mound and
dolmen dominating this tranquil site. Considered one of the
finest dolmen examples in Europe, climb inside the low passage

Grosnez Castle

This spectacularly located headland ruin is thought to
date from the 14th century. To the south is Le Pinacle, a
200ft (61m) high rock, which featured as an object of
worship and a ceremonial site for thousands of years.

island, was the first concrete lighthouse in the British Isles.

Le Don Hilton, or La Caumine à Marie Best as it is also
known, is an old guard house beside the beach in St
Ouen’s Bay. It is also called the “white cottage” due to
its distinctive whitewashed walls and it was used as a
landmark for sailors. Surrounded by thrift in spring and
sea lavender in summer, this fabulous site can be hired
from the National Trust for Jersey on a day basis.

leading into a large circular chamber beyond which is a
large capstoned chamber with smaller side chambers.
Le Moulin de Tesson (Tesson Mill)

The lowest of the group of watermills located along St
Peter’s Valley, the mill is undergoing important renovation
work by the National Trust for Jersey. Whilst not open to
the public as yet it is still possible to enjoy the site’s settings

Built in the 1540s, St Aubin’s Fort pre-dates Elizabeth
Castle and together they provided protection to the bay
and the harbour at St Aubin. Explore the Fort by walking

from Norman times. The adjacent Fisherman’s Chapel is

Named after the town’s patron saint, a hermit who lived
on the rocky islet on which Elizabeth Castle now stands.
Parts of the church date from the 11th century. The
gallant Major Peirson, who defeated the French when

Areas of natural interest
La Lande de Ouest
Part of the dry coastal heathland lying above the cliffs along
the greater part of the south-west coast. A designated
Site of Special Interest (SSI) and rich in flora and fauna,
this area is an important part of the island’s landscape and
biodiversity. A great area for walking and birdwatching.
Le Noir Pré
Often known simply as “The Orchid Field”, this unique
site actually consists of two distinct but adjoining
wet meadows, Le Noir Pré, and the smaller Le Clos
du Seigneur. The site is one of the last remaining
strongholds of the Jersey Orchid or loose-flowered
Orchid (Orchis laxiflora). During May and June, the two
meadows are a riot of colour.
Les Blanches Banques
The sand dune system at the southern end of St Ouen’s
Bay is recognised as an SSI and more than 400 plant
species have been recorded here. It also provides home
to the super Jersey Green Lizard.

Les Landes
This coastal heathland is the most spectacular aspect of
Jersey’s wild environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s largest
single expanse of maritime heathland covering
160 hectares and bound by 3km of high granite cliffs.
Portelet Common
With a mixture of dramatic sea
views and a habitat typical of an
area subjected to the prevailing
south-westerly wind, the common
has thick gorse cover, dwarf
shrub heathland and lichen-rich
grassland. Peaking at sixty one
metres above sea level and covering thirty one
hectares, this scenery is not to be missed.
Ramsar Sites
These are areas listed on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of
International Importance which concerns the conservation
and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Jersey has
four! These magnificent sites are; the South-East Coast of
Jersey, Les Minquiers, Les Écréhous and Les Dirouilles, and
Les Pierres de Lecq (The Paternosters). These sites are truly
unique and well worth a visit; however, three of these sites
are offshore reefs and require a trip by boat. Check out the
“Activities” section for operators who can take you on a
short boat trip to see these sites. The South Coast area can
be walked around and guided walks are available (contact
Jersey Walk Adventures – see “Activities”). Important! If
you wish to walk around the area independently please
seek advice first as the tide rises rapidly and you can
become stranded if unprepared. Knowledge of the tides is
essential. Jersey Tourism can provide advice if necessary
but recommends that you employ a guide. See “Walking”
on page 45.
Reservoirs
There are several reservoirs within the island which can
be walked around. These include Queen’s Valley and Val
de la Mare. Other reservoirs include Millbrook, Grands
Vaux, Handois, Mourier Valley and Dannemarche.

which can often be seen gliding above the pond.

One of the most appealing of Jersey’s public gardens,
the grounds contain colourful displays of trees and
plants that flourish in the mild climate. The park is the
location of a World War Two Cemetery and is host to
many alfresco events throughout the warmer months.

A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of September. Look out for the red
and yellow flags which indicate the patrolled areas for swimming. Swim within the flags, but note that when a red
flag is flying the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of the largest tidal flows in
the world so take care when bathing or exploring the seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise
swimmers regarding beach safety, please ask. The beaches patrolled are: St Ouen’s Bay, St Brelade’s Bay, Grève de
Lecq, Plémont and Havre des Pas.

Parking in Jersey requires the pre-purchase
of parking scratchcards, or paycards, from
Jersey Tourism, post offices, garages and
shops island-wide, but not in the car parks
themselves (except Sand Street car park,
St Helier).
Payment for parking is by paycard wherever the symbol
is displayed.
• Single yellow lines indicate that parking is prohibited
day and night and liable to a fine.
• Paycards are not required between Saturday 17:00 and
Monday 08:00 or on Bank Holidays.
