22 AUGUST 2014 No. 25
Dear Parents
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF GOD SUDDENLY WALKED INTO THE ROOM?
I believe that we live with too much fear of God. This will have many causes but perhaps a central
reason we fear is that we’ve never experienced the kind of love that’s shown in Jesus and we take for
granted that anyone who sees us as we really are (in our unloveliness, weaknesses, pathology, sin,
insubstantiality) will, in the end, be as disappointed with us as we are with ourselves. We presume that
God is disappointed with us and will greet us with a frown.
The tragedy and sadness here is that, because we think that God is disappointed in us, we try to avoid
meeting the one person, one love, and the one energy, God, that actually understands us, accepts us,
delights in us, and is eager to smile at us.
In fidelity to the example of the Master, it is vitally important for the Church today to go forth and preach
the Gospel to all: to all places, on all occasions, without hesitation, reluctance or fear. The joy of the
Gospel is for all people: no one can be excluded.
Pope Francis
OPENING AND BLESSING OF THE BUILDINGS
Be a part of something important – come and celebrate
this occasion with the community. There is a lot of
positive and excited talk about this day. The community
rejoices in the new facilities that are going to provide so
well for Iona students. Over one thousand people will
gather to pray for those who will study in these facilities,
tour the facilities and enjoy each other’s company.
This day will go ahead whatever the weather.
Tomorrow (Friday 22) is the last opportunity to order platters, http://www.trybooking.com/92290 .
There will be great activities all day such as jumping castles, touch football, Brisbane Roar with an
inflatable soccer field, Queensland cricket on ovals; a community art mural, art stations for children,
and the art show. A bar is open and you can bring your own picnic or buy food.
Eat while you relax and enjoy the music from the different ensembles and choirs; come and contribute
to the school art mural and kids can use the art stations; see the art show; come back to quadrangle at
1.30 pm to see our rock band close out the day.
We have reserved some parking at the top of the hill for those who are less abled. If your family
requires such parking please contact Mrs Watterson on 3893 8814.
Also, we are looking for volunteers to help with the pack down and clean up at the end of the day and
to help with the car parking in the morning.
OPEN DAY
We are holding our Open Day next Monday 25 August. It is an occasion for
those who would like to see our school in action, have a tour, talk to some of
our students and ask questions. Please promote this with friends and family
who you believe might appreciate this opportunity.
Current families are very welcome also. I invite you to come and see the
school through the eyes of a proud senior student.
OPEN DAY PARKING ARRANGEMENTS
It would be appreciated if parents could use the pick-up/drop off zone on this day to alleviate traffic
congestion in North Road. Access is via Bulgin Avenue. Students who drive to school will be asked to
park on Fuller Oval.
THE IONA ART PROJECT
Our major exhibition of student art will be the first event held in the new Fr Daly Art Precinct. Friday 29
August is the opening night (6.30 pm – 8.30 pm) and it is always a memorable occasion with a guest
artist, judging the prizes, canapés and a cash bar.
The Art Project will also be a major event for the official Opening and Blessing of the new buildings on
Sunday 31 August.
Do come and admire the work your sons are producing.
QCS TEST
On Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 September, our Year 12 students will
sit the Queensland Core Skills tests. The results of the cohort on these
tests are central to determining our 2014 OP scores. As well, the results
of individuals are recorded on their Senior Certificate.
We have worked hard with our students to prepare them for this
important occasion.
I ask parents of Year 12 students to note these dates, please, and to
plan ahead so that your sons get a good night’s sleep on the Monday
and Tuesday nights.
YEAR 8 SUBJECT SELECTION ON MONDAY NIGHT
It is important that parents of Year 8 students come for this evening at
IPAC on Monday. I look forward to seeing you there.
SCHOLARSHIP EVENING
I thank Ms Murdoch for organising the very helpful scholarship evening
for our Year 12 students on Monday night. There have been many very
positive comments.
PARENT TEACHER STUDENT INTERVIEWS
Many parents and sons were able to come to our Parent Teacher
Student interviews on Tuesday. This is a very important opportunity for
us all to connect and to close the triangle between home, student and
teacher. I thank those who were able to come.
I thank the Staff for the professional and caring way they approached
these conversations with you. I also acknowledge Mrs Byrne and Mrs
Johnston for their organisation and thoughtfulness for all.
CATHOLIC COLLEGES MUSIC FESTIVAL
Last weekend, eighteen Iona ensembles and choirs performed at the
Catholic Colleges Music Festival which was held at Villanova College.
Hundreds of Iona students across four days executed skills they have
been polishing, sometimes over many years. We are proud of their
efforts and of the sounds they made. They were great.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
NAPLAN RESULTS
Last Friday, schools received students’ results for the 2014 NAPLAN
Tests. We were very pleased to see that Iona has exceeded the state
and national averages in every category in every year level. This is an
excellent outcome, particularly given the widespread controversy over
this year’s writing task which has been criticised as being too difficult
and/or confusing for primary school students. Analysis of our data over
the last few years has reflected an upward trend in our results,
confirming that our literacy and numeracy programs are working well but
also reaffirming our belief in the difference quality teaching makes. It
also reinforces the importance of positive home/school partnerships and
the vital role parents play in supporting their children’s educational
outcomes.
Over the next few weeks, our Head of Academic Development, Mr John
Christie, will analyse our NAPLAN data and track cohort performances
over their participation in the tests. His analysis will identify focus areas
for further growth and then he will work closely with our staff to
implement strategies for remediation, improvement and extension.
These discussions and strategies will be specific to the needs of each
year group and the individuals within the groups so that we can continue
to see growth in our students, not just in NAPLAN but in their general
knowledge and skills.
Reports presenting individual student results are currently being
photocopied and will be posted to families early next week. When
looking at your son’s results, please remember to view the NAPLAN
data as a point in time diagnostic exercise. It is important to remember
that the tests are intended to complement the teaching and learning
cycle and therefore any consideration of a child’s results should be
viewed in conjunction with class assessment and demonstrations of their
learning over a longer period of time. We also need to be careful not to
use the results to unduly influence our expectations about what content
schools should deliver or we will end up “teaching to the test”. The risk
of this is that the teaching and learning process becomes results
orientated rather than providing innovative, rich learning experiences
that focus on the growth of all students.
2014 NAPLAN – PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS ABOVE
NATIONAL MINIMUM STANDARD
I am grateful to their parents for prioritising this weekend. It is not
possible without your dedication and support.
I particularly thank the Iona music staff under the direction of Mr Francis
and Mrs Corkeron for their talent, energy and genuine excitement in the
achievements of their students. Their ability to bring out the best in our
students is both wonderful and appreciated.
AUSTRALIAN PERCUSSION EISTEDDFOD
This weekend, Iona hosts the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod. This is
a huge event with many, many categories of percussion competition.
You may like to come and experience a taste of this on Sunday 24
August when we have two ensembles performing.
Iona Percussion Ensemble 2 competes at 12.15 pm
Iona Senior Percussion Ensemble competes at 2.00 pm
Currently, Iona’s Senior Percussion Ensemble is the reigning national
champion. This is an opportunity to see some of the best percussion
ensembles in Queensland and Australia and to grasp how outstanding
our music program is.
GRANDPARENTS DAY
I look forward with anticipation to Grandparents Day tomorrow. The
Year 5 students and their teachers look forward to sharing a little of what
Iona is about with the grandparents and it always goes well. Students
who drive to school will be asked to park on Fuller Oval.
FAITH AND MISSION
SUPPORTING AID ORGANISATIONS
In our true missionary spirit, Iona does a great deal to help the poor and
needy each year. Additionally, our approach is broad and balanced,
contributing to local and international charities. In Term 1 we support
Caritas Australia through the Project Compassion program. In Term 2
we focus on Rosies, a predominantly Queensland-based Oblate work.
Iona’s efforts in Term 3 assist international Oblate mission needs,
especially China, Indonesia and Kenya, and in Term 4 the focus is
assisting the good work of the St Vincent de Paul Society,
predominantly in our local area.
These significant efforts:
a. contribute to the missionary culture of our Catholic school;
b. further develop a social conscience among all members of our
college community; and
c. make significant financial contributions to agencies who
directly help the poor and needy.
COMMERCIAL SURROGACY
As young Australians, boys at Iona are acutely aware of the range of
controversial moral issues presented in the media, including the recent
case of baby Gammy. Still in Thailand being cared for by his surrogate
Thai mother, Gammy is separated from his twin sister and likely
biological parents who are in Australia. This case is certainly
complicated and perplexing. While all of the key players in this scenario
claim to have rights, the Catholic Church maintains a justified stance on
the preservation of human dignity and the upholding of human rights,
especially those of children and the unborn. In these scenarios, it is the
children and the unborn who are genuinely at the mercy of others.
Clearly, adults must be aware of potential opportunities to reflect the
goodness and love of God in the world and act accordingly.
God bless the children
A PRAYER FOR MY KIDS
Loving God,
I thank you for the gift of my children.
I love them very much and I hold them up to you
for your blessing and your protection.
May they always be kept safe from harm
and may they grow into good, happy, healthy people
who embrace the life they lead.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen
JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
ICAS SCIENCE COMPETITION
Last term, eighty Junior School students were selected to participate in
the ICAS Science competition and this week, each student was awarded
a certificate for their efforts.
Well done to the following boys for receiving Distinction awards: Earl
Tonogbanua (7S), Jake Hrstich (6M), Gabriel Brits (5G), Noah Harris
(5J) and Matthew Thompson (5M).
Congratulations to Anthony Scodellaro (6M) who was the only student in
Year 5, 6 or 7 to receive a High Distinction. Anthony was also awarded
the Principal’s Award for his result.
The results of the recent ICAS English and Maths competitions will be
available later this term.
YEAR 5 GRANDPARENTS DAY
This Friday we welcome to Iona over two hundred grandparents, and a
few great-grandparents, of our Year 5 students. For some grandparents
it will be their first opportunity to look around our school but for others,
an opportunity to see how much the College has grown since their last
visit. My thanks to the Year 5 staff, the Music Department and Mr Ould
in IPAC for their preparation towards the concert and the organisation of
the day. I know the Year 5 boys are very excited to have these special
members of their families visit Iona.
BOOK WEEK 2014—CONNECT TO READING
To celebrate Book Week, our Year 5 classes will participate in a Book
Character Parade on Tuesday 26 August in IPAC. The idea is to have
each boy dress up as a favourite or popular character from a book. The
Book Character Parade is always great entertainment and we welcome
all parents and family members along. The parade will start at 9.00 am.
The Resource Centre staff have also organised for two authors to visit
the College and speak to the students about their profession and love
for books. Matt Porter, who writes the Crazy Relief Teacher stories, will
conduct a writing workshop for our Year 6 students this week and
Andrew King, author of the Engibear series, will conduct a workshop
based on environmental engineering and design, for all Year 5 and 7
students next Tuesday. I’m sure the boys will find these sessions both
informative and interesting and I thank Mrs Shaw, Ms Harrison, Mrs
Taylor and the Resource Centre staff for organising this.
BLESSING AND OPENING OF NEW BUILDINGS
Next Sunday 31 August, we have the official blessing and opening of the
St Joseph’s Industrial Design and Technology Centre and the Fr Peter
Daly Arts Precinct. The day will begin with Mass at 9.30 am and will be
followed by the official proceedings in the quadrangle and then a variety
of activities on the oval. I encourage all families to join us for what is
sure to be an enjoyable day.
ROTARY PUBLIC SPEAKING
Each year the Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly host a Public
Speaking Competition for the local schools. We invite any interested
boy in Years 5, 6 and 7 to register their name at the Junior School Office
if they would like to take part. If more than three boys register their
interest, heats will be held in the coming weeks and the Junior School
staff will select three finalists to represent Iona in this competition.
Further information will be given to interested students.
BOOK CLUB
Catalogues for the latest issue of Book Club were distributed this week
and the closing date for orders will be 1 September. Please note that
orders cannot be accepted after this date.
PEDAGOGY
TEACH LIKE A CHAMPION
Last week our teaching staff had the opportunity to be part of
workshops and observe a guest teacher to assist us in using different
strategies in our teaching to improve outcomes for our students. We
had the opportunity to discuss teaching techniques, and share ideas
that work for us in our classrooms. We are going to follow through with
more conversations and workshops in the coming weeks on improving
our teaching, building relationships and teaching like champions. As
part of the visit, we had a lucky door prize of the book “Teach Like a
Champion” by Doug Lemov which was won by Mr Gavin Baumber.
commitment to our music program. Iona had a very successful
weekend overall, and considering our very busy music term received
some great feedback and awards. Well done everyone and
OFFICIAL OPENING AND BLESSING
You will have received by email this week your schedules and
notifications in relation to this event. Iona Wind Ensemble and
Percussion Ensemble 1 are required to assist with set up on Friday
afternoon. There are several bands required for rehearsals and sound
checks on the Saturday. Then of course all ensembles are required to
perform on Sunday 31 August. Please note again that all performers
on Sunday must wear the performance uniform while performing. As a
college we are looking forward to a wonderful day of celebration.
We appreciate your consideration with RSVPs via return email,
particularly during this very busy music term. It can be very time
consuming for our music office to follow up families who have not
responded in relation to their son’s participation. RSVPs are a very
important part of the process as they assist with determining our final
performance schedule for all music events.
Thanks to those who have already sent their RSVP for all upcoming
events. We are still chasing RSVPs for Music Concert 5, Australian
Percussion Eisteddfod and our Official Opening and Blessing
weekend.
We look forward to seeing you soon at one of our music performances.
