Vice Chancellor’s Message<br />

When students hear that D. H. Lawrence claimed that<br />

education should aim to “lead the individual nature in each<br />

man <strong>and</strong> woman to its true fullness,” that for Rousseau the<br />

aim <strong>of</strong> education was “to come into accord with the teaching<br />

<strong>of</strong> nature,” that R. M. Hutchins saw the aim <strong>of</strong> education as<br />

“cultivation <strong>of</strong> intellect,” that A. S. Neil believed the aim <strong>of</strong><br />

education should be to “make people happier, more secure,<br />

less neurotic, less prejudiced,” <strong>and</strong> that John Locke claimed<br />

“education must aim at virtue <strong>and</strong> teach man to deny his<br />

desire, inclinations <strong>and</strong> appetite, <strong>and</strong> follow as reason directs”;<br />

hopefully the penny was dropped. (Harris, 1999, p.1) This is not<br />

all; one could find hundreds <strong>of</strong> such famous <strong>and</strong> philosophers<br />

who have articulated their thoughts as aims <strong>of</strong> education.<br />

Same will be true for goals, missions, objectives, <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

<strong>of</strong> education. Similar diversity in the thoughts will be observed<br />

if education is further specified as basic education, science <strong>and</strong><br />

technical education, secondary <strong>and</strong> tertiary education. I am<br />

not striving for a definition <strong>of</strong> aim, goal, mission, purpose or<br />

objective <strong>of</strong> educations which is close to my thinking but what<br />

we at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>and</strong> Technology Taxila are <strong>and</strong><br />

what the students shall expect after entering this <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> the expectations that we will have during his/her stay at<br />

the university <strong>and</strong> throughout his pr<strong>of</strong>essional life as alumni.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> is about people, their lives, their growth, their<br />

needs <strong>and</strong> their welfare as such to underst<strong>and</strong> the genesis <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>University</strong>; the <strong>University</strong> may be looked at as a large self<br />

contained social system. The prime activity at the Universities<br />

is about knowledge, education, research <strong>and</strong> discovery at<br />

various levels <strong>and</strong> in various directions <strong>and</strong> dimensions where<br />

the interaction breeds <strong>and</strong> feeds learning, as such a modern<br />

<strong>University</strong> may be considered a large learning echo system<br />

– that is our underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> Technology, Taxila. At the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Technology Taxila the student will experience an academic<br />

environment <strong>and</strong> research culture that will accelerate the<br />

learning process <strong>of</strong> our students <strong>and</strong> help them broaden<br />

their conceptualization <strong>and</strong> learning reach about principles,<br />

practices in their chosen field <strong>of</strong> engineering education.<br />

During their stay the students will develop articulated way<br />

<strong>of</strong> discovering new <strong>and</strong> unknown, to exp<strong>and</strong> the horizon <strong>and</strong><br />

enable them to contribute pr<strong>of</strong>essionally to the advancement<br />

<strong>of</strong> human race <strong>and</strong> civility in their upbringing. For us student,<br />

faculty, learning environment <strong>and</strong> society are the core<br />

elements <strong>of</strong> UET Taxila echo system:<br />

<strong>University</strong> commits itself to provide maximal opportunities<br />

for intellectual <strong>and</strong> creative development. We at UET Taxila<br />

are committed to provide our students, opportunities to learn<br />

through inquiry <strong>and</strong> research rather than simple transmission<br />

<strong>of</strong> knowledge, training in the skills necessary for oral <strong>and</strong><br />

written communication at the level that will serve the student<br />

both within the university <strong>and</strong> in postgraduate pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

<strong>and</strong> personal life, appreciation <strong>of</strong> art, humanities, sciences,<br />

<strong>and</strong> social sciences <strong>and</strong> the opportunity to experience at<br />

any intensity <strong>and</strong> depth the student can accommodate. We<br />

also are mindful <strong>of</strong> careful <strong>and</strong> comprehensive preparation<br />

<strong>of</strong> students for whatever may lie beyond their graduation,<br />

whether it is the graduate school, pr<strong>of</strong>essional school or<br />

first pr<strong>of</strong>essional position. The student at this university<br />

can also expect opportunity to work with talented senior<br />

researchers who will help <strong>and</strong> guide their efforts, access to<br />

first class facilities in which to pursue education <strong>and</strong> research<br />

– laboratories, libraries, studios, computer systems <strong>and</strong><br />

residential halls. Many options among engineering fields <strong>of</strong><br />

study <strong>and</strong> directions to move within those fields are available,<br />

including areas <strong>and</strong> choices not found in general universities,<br />

<strong>and</strong> opportunities to interact with people <strong>of</strong> backgrounds<br />

cultures <strong>and</strong> experiences different from the student’s own <strong>and</strong><br />

with pursuers <strong>of</strong> knowledge at every level <strong>of</strong> accomplishment,<br />

from first year students to senior research faculty.<br />

While we provide limitless opportunities to our students<br />

we also have expectations from students what have the<br />

privilege to be inducted in <strong>undergraduate</strong> engineering<br />

disciplines. We want our students to respect for the rights,<br />

differences, <strong>and</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> others, honesty <strong>and</strong> integrity in<br />

all dealings, conscientious pursuit <strong>of</strong> excellence in one’s work<br />

<strong>and</strong> accountability for actions <strong>and</strong> conduct in the university,<br />

respect for freedom <strong>of</strong> thought <strong>and</strong> expression during their<br />

stay <strong>and</strong> throughout their pr<strong>of</strong>essional life.<br />

This document provides you with information about the<br />

<strong>University</strong>, its programs, areas <strong>of</strong> teaching <strong>and</strong> research,<br />

faculty, facilities – how you can enter in this <strong>University</strong>, spend<br />

your <strong>undergraduate</strong> years, <strong>and</strong> what will be expected from<br />
