INTRODUCTION<br />

Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> is the branch <strong>of</strong> engineering that<br />

is concerned with the Design, Analysis, <strong>and</strong> Operation <strong>of</strong><br />

Systems. These can range from a consumer product or<br />

single piece <strong>of</strong> equipment to large business, social, <strong>and</strong><br />

environmental systems. Industrial Engineers determine<br />

the most effective ways to utilize the basic factors <strong>of</strong><br />

ProductionPeople, Machines, Materials, Information, <strong>and</strong><br />

Energyto make a product or provide a service. The Industrial<br />

Engineer’s interest lies in modeling system functions <strong>and</strong><br />

determining how best to achieve the objectives <strong>of</strong> the system.<br />

The methods employed in Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> provide an<br />

excellent vehicle for considering both private <strong>and</strong> public costs<br />

<strong>and</strong> benefits.<br />

Industrial Engineers by virtue <strong>of</strong> education <strong>and</strong> training<br />

have the opportunity to work in a variety <strong>of</strong> departments<br />

<strong>and</strong> businesses. The most distinctive aspect <strong>of</strong> industrial<br />

engineering is the flexibility that it <strong>of</strong>fers. Whether it’s<br />

shortening a rollercoaster line, streamlining an operating<br />

room, distributing products worldwide, or manufacturing<br />

superior automobiles, all share the common goal <strong>of</strong> saving<br />

money <strong>and</strong> increasing efficiencies. The need for Industrial<br />

Engineers is growing. Why? Industrial Engineers are the only<br />

engineering pr<strong>of</strong>essionals trained as productivity <strong>and</strong> quality<br />

improvement specialists. Industrial Engineers figure out how<br />

to do things better. They engineer processes <strong>and</strong> systems that<br />

improve quality <strong>and</strong> productivity.<br />

THE DEPARTMENT<br />

Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> with Production <strong>and</strong> Manufacturing<br />

majors was the first MSc degree program <strong>of</strong>fered at the<br />

university way back in 1983. Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> had<br />

assumed a distinctive place as sub-discipline in Mechanical<br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> Department since then. With the creation<br />

<strong>of</strong> Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> Department, this program has<br />

been shifted to the department. MSc degree program in<br />

Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> spans over two years <strong>and</strong> specializes<br />

in Manufacturing Systems <strong>Engineering</strong>. The department is<br />

also <strong>of</strong>fering a broad-based Master’s program in <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

Management. An independent four-year program leading to<br />

BSc degree in Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> is being introduced with<br />

2010-entry at the university.<br />

COURSES OF STUDY<br />

The Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> courses are built on fundamentals<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mathematical, Physical <strong>and</strong> Computing Sciences. The<br />

curriculum is designed to educate students in diverse areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> theory <strong>and</strong> practices in engineering <strong>and</strong> management<br />

domains. The following areas are specifically enriched for<br />

disseminating state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art knowledge to future builders<br />

<strong>of</strong> the nation;<br />

· Computational Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

· Human Resource’s Skill development<br />

· Managerial Capabilities Inculcation<br />

· High-tech Manufacturing Technology <strong>and</strong> Management<br />

· Quality, Productivity <strong>and</strong> Cost Effectiveness<br />

On the core technology side, BSc in Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fers students a unique opportunity to learn classical<br />

production technologies in courses like Workshop Technology,<br />

Manufacturing Processes, Metrology <strong>and</strong> Tool <strong>Engineering</strong>.<br />

The high-tech courses embed in students the capabilities to<br />

learn <strong>and</strong> acquire modern production systems in courses like<br />

CAD/CAM, Robotics, Automation <strong>and</strong> CIM.<br />

S<strong>of</strong>t technologies encompassing Statistical Analysis,<br />

Economics Optimization <strong>and</strong> Simulation Modeling courses<br />

prepare students to design <strong>and</strong> build large <strong>and</strong> complex<br />

systems for efficiency <strong>and</strong> effectiveness. Also, strong emphasis<br />

has been ensured to inculcate managerial capabilities in<br />

industrial engineering students by including a host <strong>of</strong> courses<br />

in management electives.<br />

Rich industrial neighourhood around the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

prospective industrial engineering students an ideal<br />

environment to groom their pr<strong>of</strong>essional skills. These<br />

industries include HMC, HIT, POF, KSB, TIP, PAF complex at<br />

Kamra, BESTWAY <strong>and</strong> a host <strong>of</strong> SME’s in nearby Hattar Industrial<br />

Estate.<br />

The department has a fully functional Workshop, a large<br />

Machine Tools Laboratory <strong>and</strong> a state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art Advanced<br />

Manufacturing System (AMS) Centre equipped with CNC<br />

Machines, Rapid-Prototyping Machine, about two-dozen<br />

CAD/CAM workstations <strong>and</strong> highly sophisticated open-FMS<br />

System housing AGV/ASRS <strong>and</strong> Automated Inspection System.
