Repco Quality Assurance
Repco is able to supply a comprehensive and growing range of complete radiator assemblies which have been sourced from a number
of well credentialed radiator manufacturer’s and all carry full factory warranty and support.
Radiators supplied by Repco meet, and in many cases exceed the original equipment specifications required to adequately perform in
the application intended.
Repco Radiators are manufactured in three material types, the composition of which has altered over the years for a variety of reasons.
Copper / Brass – Generally older vehicle radiators were produced with copper / brass cores and brass tanks, and in some cases more
modern vehicles with heavy duty applications have copper / brass radiators fitted. [i.e. early Holden’s and Ford's etc]
Copper / Plastic – In the early eighties many vehicles were supplied with radiators comprising Copper / Brass cores and Plastic tanks.
These radiators were more efficient in their design [thinner cores], and manufacturers had successfully developed plastic tank material
and moulding processes, which helped them achieve cost savings, reduced weight and were more environmentally friendly.
[i.e. Camry / Magna / Falcon]
Aluminium / Plastic – Most modern vehicles are now fitted with Aluminium / Plastic radiators which achieve further cost and weight
savings, as well as satisfying many environmental issues such as the elimination of lead based products in the manufacturing process.
Aluminium radiators were fitted much earlier in many European vehicles, and later on in the eighties, most Japanese and Australian
vehicles were gradually changed to this type of radiator.
The great majority of modern vehicles and also many industrial applications utilize radiators of this type.
As a consequence, these radiators are cheaper to produce, difficult to repair and, in many cases suffer premature failure as direct result
of poor installation and maintenance practices. Aluminium radiators are more ‘sensitive’ to external attack, in particular incorrect coolant
type and dosage [chemical corrosion], as well as electrolysis in the cooling system which sometimes exists in vehicles that are not
‘earthed’ well enough.
All radiators sold by Repco are supported by our comprehensive, but simple warranty policy which provides peace of mind to
our customers for a period of 2 Years or 50,000 km.
1
Repco Guarantee of Quality
This guarantee does not extend to damage caused by mis-use, improper installation or operations, lack of maintenance or other cause beyond the control
of Repco.
The guarantee is additional to any conditions or warranties applying by virtue of the Trade Practices Act or applicable state legislation and to all other rights
and remedies available to a consumer or goods or services in law.
Where reference is made to parts that may be substituted for other parts, Repco does not intend to imply that the substituted parts are necessarily of the
same standard and quality. Repco makes no representation that one product may be used to replace the other. Repco only represents that each of the
Quick Coolant Summary Points
01) DO NOT MIX COOLANTS OR INHIBITORS.
Never mix coolants or corrosion inhibitors, a mixture of incompatible coolants can induce radiator fouling and severe over heating. Secondly a
mixture of coolants or inhibitors can actually reduce the effectiveness of the corrosion protection afforded to the vehicle.
02) FOAMING COOLANTS CAUSE CAVITATION EROSION
A coolant that foams can induce accelerated cavitation erosion of the water pump and water pump backing plates. If a product has a tendency to
foam you can usually pick it by shaking the bottle and counting 5 seconds, if the foam has broken and the fluid is returned to normal this product
probably won’t foam in the cooling system, if the foam has not broken after 5 seconds it might pay to find another product.
03) NEVER UNDERTREAT A COOLING SYSTEM WITH A COOLANT OR INHIBITOR.
If you do not use the recommended dose ratio of a coolant or inhibitor you can actually accelerate corrosion to above that of plain water.
Do it right or don’t do it at all.
04) USED COOLANTS ARE NOT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY.
Any cooling fluid that circulates in an automotive cooling system will pick up heavy metals. The disposal of a fluid containing heavy metal will
contravene the E.P.A. regulations. Do not be confused by certain coolant brands that claim they are environmentally friendly, we believe these
products are referring to the new product in the bottle and has no relevance after the coolant has been used.
05) USE ONLY THE BEST QUALITY WATER AVAILABLE.
When mixing Anti Freeze / Anti-Boil or any corrosion inhibitor concentrate use the best quality water available as this will ensure the extended life of
the product. The preferred water is demineralised. Do not use spring or bore water.
06) CHECK FOR THE PRESENCE OF STRAY CURRENT IN THE COOLANT.
If a vehicle is suffering from repeated and accelerated corrosion, especially in Aluminium radiators always remember to check for the presence of
stray current. An Anolag multi-meter is all that is required for preliminary testing.
07) REAL COOLANT CONTAINS ETHYLENE GLYCOL.
Based on the vehicle manufacturers recommendations world wide all coolants classed as suitable for use in their vehicles will have an Ethyelene or
Propylene Glycol base. Failure to use a Glycol based coolant in newer vehicles could void warrantee should the cooling system fail.
08) TECTALOY IS NATIONALLY AVAILABLE.
National availability is very important to your customer, as you realize coolants can not be mixed so it’s important that you use a product your customer
can purchase Australia wide. If your customer cannot purchase top up coolant out of the state they may have to drain and replace the entire cooling system.
09) ALWAYS USE COOLANT SERVICE STICKERS.
Use the service stickers supplied by the coolant manufaturers to avoid coolant type confusion when top up coolant is required.
Radiator Installation Procedure
WARNING
FAILURE TO INSTALL THIS RADIATOR ASSEMBLY WITHOUT STRICTLY ADHERING TO THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES WILL VOID THE
RADIATOR MANUFACTURERS' WARRANTY.
A WARRANTY CLAIM WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT PRODUCING A FULLY COMPLETED AND SIGNED, INSTALLATION
CERTIFICATE, ACCOMPANIED BY A COPY OF THE VEHICLE OWNERS' PURCHASE INVOICE.
Part A - Installing a New Radiator (Replacing Old, Faulty, Or Damaged Radiator Existing In Vehicle)
1. Prior to removing the existing radiator, the cooling system must be inspected for evidence of stray / electric current.
(This is only possible when the cooling system is still operational)
Stray/electric current causes a highly destructive form of corrosion (electrolysis).
This is caused by the passage of even the smallest (.05 volt) current through the coolant in the system. The resulting fast acting corrosion attacks not only
the radiator and heater cores, but can also cause severe and expensive damage to alloy cylinder heads, water pumps and other component parts, including
the auto transmission.
This condition occurs within the cooling system mainly due to current seeking an easy path through the coolant in search of ground. Typically, this is a
result of accident damage to the vehicle, poor installation of electrical components, and faults occurring in electrical components.
Use an analogue voltmeter (with a sensitivity of .05 volts), or a stray current detector to check for the presence of electrical current by placing the positive
lead directly into the coolant, (filler neck on the radiator) or in the overflow bottle (closed system), making sure the terminal is not in contact with any
surrounding metal surfaces.
Attach the negative lead to the battery earth (negative terminal). Switch on all of the vehicles' electrical systems, one at a time, first with the engine running,
and then repeat the process with the engine off. A reading of more than .05 volts or a ‘positive’ (red light) indicates a damaging current is likely to be
present in the cooling system.
This procedure will enable you to establish, by process of elimination, the source of the current. It is imperative that the source of any current traveling
through the coolant is located, and repaired or replaced, prior to installing a new radiator assembly.
90
Radiator Installation Procedure
2. Completely drain the coolant from the system.
WARNING - DO NOT PROCEED IF UNABLE TO DETECT SOURCE OF CURRENT.
CONSULT A QUALIFIED AUTO ELECTRICIAN FOR ASSISTANCE
3. Fill the system with water and treat with a quality cooling system flushing agent. (Ensure the vehicles' heater is turned on and the radiator overflow
bottle is clean).
4. Check components such as the radiator cap, hoses, clamps, thermostat, water pump and fan/s for wear and condition.
5. Drain water from the system and flush out with clean water.
6. Carefully remove the old radiator assembly.
7. Correctly install the new radiator assembly - replace faulty or worn components (see item 4). Check vehicle service manual for any additional
procedures applicable to radiator installation.
8. Fill system with water and perform stray/electric current test procedure as outlined in (item1). Proceed if result is negative.
9. Completely drain water from the system.
10. Select and properly install the recommended coolant (type and dosage) for this vehicle, as specified by the vehicle manufacturers' service manual.
Alternatively, choose a quality coolant that meets or exceeds Australian standard AS/NZS 2108.1-1997 (TYPE A OR B).
Do not mix coolant brands or types together. Correct coolant installation is essential to ensure maximum corrosion protection
for all components within the engine cooling system.
11. Run vehicle engine up to normal operating temperature and inspect all components for leaks.
Warning: Do not remove radiator cap
12. Fully complete and sign the attached radiator installation certificate, failure to do so may void the radiator manufacturers' warranty.
(place in glove box )
13. Vehicle must be returned to an authorised radiator repair centre every twelve months (25,000 kms) for routine maintenance and warranty validation.
91
Radiator Installation Procedure
Part B - Installing a New Radiator (Old Radiator Absent From Vehicle)
As the original radiator is missing or damaged (coolant absent), no initial stray/electric current test can be performed.
1. Correctly install the new radiator assembly - replace faulty or worn components Check vehicle service manual for any additional procedures applicable
to radiator installation.
2. Fill the system with water and treat with a quality cooling system flushing agent.
(Ensure that heater is turned on and the radiator overflow bottle is cleaned).
3. Drain and flush the system and re-fill with clean water.
4. Perform stray/electric current test as detailed in Part A - (1) proceed with installation if result is negative - if a positive result
is noted do not proceed - consult a qualified auto electrician
5. Completely drain water from the system.
7. Run vehicle engine up to normal operating temperature and inspect all components for leaks. Warning: do not remove radiator cap
8. Fully complete and sign the attached radiator installation certificate, failure to do so may void the radiator manufacturers' warranty.
(place in glove box)
9. Vehicle must be returned to an authorised radiator repair centre every twelve months (25,000 kms) for routine maintenance and warranty validation.
Congratulations
You have correctly installed a quality radiator assembly and the manufacturers' warranty is now offered conditionally. Correct installation procedures,
quality coolant protection, and a routine maintenance schedule, will greatly reduce any unnecessary expense and inconvenience.
Protect your investment – neglect is costly
