Ch<strong>an</strong>cellor of La Trobe University<br />

La Trobe University was established in<br />

1964 <strong>an</strong>d commenced teaching in 1967 in<br />

Melbourne, Victoria. The university has grown<br />

Foundation Studies Program<br />

The La Trobe Foundation Studies Program is<br />

designed to bring international students to<br />

the same academic level as Australi<strong>an</strong> Year<br />

12 students. To gain entry to this program,<br />

you must first complete the appropriate<br />

academic course in your country or<br />

in Australia.<br />

Diploma courses<br />

La Trobe diploma programs are <strong>an</strong> alternative<br />

st<strong>an</strong>d-alone qualification or pathway for<br />

students who wish to undertake a university<br />

degree. Each diploma course introduces the<br />

Australi<strong>an</strong> university style of learning, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

helps you develop skills in oral <strong>an</strong>d written<br />

English, researching, note taking, essay<br />

writing, report writing <strong>an</strong>d oral presentations.<br />

During the course, you will complete eight<br />

academic units, either over eight months<br />

(Fast track) or 12 months (St<strong>an</strong>dard) — see<br />

Course Structure table on page 7. We<br />

provide extra lecture <strong>an</strong>d tutorial time during<br />

semesters — you will have a three-hour<br />

lecture <strong>an</strong>d a two-hour tutorial to help you<br />

gain the necessary skills for universitylevel<br />

study.<br />

English entry requirements for direct entry<br />

to Diploma are IELTS academic 6.0 (with no<br />

b<strong>an</strong>d less th<strong>an</strong> 5.5).<br />

Provisional Admissions Pathway<br />

If you meet the academic entry requirement<br />

for Diploma but only have <strong>an</strong> IELTS score of<br />

5.5 (minimum of 5.0 in <strong>an</strong>y b<strong>an</strong>d) you c<strong>an</strong><br />

choose the Provisional Admissions Pathway.<br />

In this program you must successfully<br />

complete <strong>an</strong> additional unit in Academic<br />

Study Skills for Diploma Programs during<br />

the first semester.<br />

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION<br />

<strong>Navitas</strong> family bursaries<br />

<strong>Navitas</strong> offers fin<strong>an</strong>cial support in the form<br />

of family bursaries. A bursary applies where<br />

two or more students from the same family<br />

study with a <strong>Navitas</strong> member institution.*<br />

The first family member c<strong>an</strong> be studying<br />

with a <strong>Navitas</strong> member institution at the<br />

same time as other family members, or<br />

they may have previously studied with <strong>an</strong>y<br />

<strong>Navitas</strong> member institution. The bursary<br />

is gr<strong>an</strong>ted to the second <strong>an</strong>d subsequent<br />

family members who study with a <strong>Navitas</strong><br />

member institution. For the purpose of<br />

this bursary, a family member is defined<br />

as a husb<strong>an</strong>d, wife, brother, sister, mother,<br />

father, son, daughter or stepchild.<br />

The bursary is equivalent to 10 percent of<br />

tuition fee for the first attempt at units or<br />

courses in the program of study (i.e. a<br />

are awarded each term by each <strong>Navitas</strong><br />

pathway college or m<strong>an</strong>aged campus.<br />

Two students with the highest GPA in<br />

four or more subjects or courses will<br />

each receive a scholarship.<br />

The scholarships cover:<br />

• one academic term or part thereof at a<br />

Information collected before a student<br />

Do I need a student visa?<br />

All international students must possess a<br />

current student visa while they are studying<br />

in Australia. This information does not apply<br />

to prospective students who are Australi<strong>an</strong><br />

or New Zeal<strong>an</strong>d citizens or perm<strong>an</strong>ent<br />

residents of Australia.<br />

How do I apply?<br />

Prospective international students intending<br />

to study in Australia must obtain a student<br />

visa from <strong>an</strong> Australi<strong>an</strong> High Commission,<br />

Embassy or Consulate in their home country<br />

before travelling. Some students c<strong>an</strong> also<br />

apply online: to find out if you are eligible,<br />

All international students must comply with<br />

How long is my visa valid?<br />

Your student visa will be issued for the<br />

duration of your <strong>ACN</strong> course, as stated in the<br />

CoE that you will receive from <strong>ACN</strong>.<br />

How do I renew my visa?<br />

It is your responsibility to renew or extend<br />

your visa as required, before it expires. You<br />

must present specific documents when<br />

applying for a student visa extension or<br />

renewal. A checklist <strong>an</strong>d the required forms<br />

C<strong>an</strong> I work in Australia while on<br />

a student visa?<br />

If you are <strong>an</strong> international student currently<br />

enrolled <strong>an</strong>d attending classes, you may<br />

work up to 20 hours per week while your<br />

course is in session, <strong>an</strong>d full-time hours<br />

during scheduled course breaks. However,<br />

you should not rely on part-time work to<br />

support your study, as the amount you earn<br />

will be unlikely to cover all your living costs.<br />

Please be aware that your primary purpose<br />

in Australia while on a student visa is to<br />

study, <strong>an</strong>d that <strong>an</strong>y work you undertake<br />

must not interfere with your studies.<br />

What if I have depend<strong>an</strong>ts?<br />

If you are a prospective international student<br />

<strong>an</strong>d you have <strong>an</strong>y school-aged depend<strong>an</strong>ts<br />

coming to Australia with you, you must pay<br />

full fees for each depend<strong>an</strong>t who is to be<br />

enrolled in a government or nongovernment<br />

The provision of education to international students is regulated by the Department of Education, Employment <strong>an</strong>d Workplace Relations (DEEWR) through the Education<br />

To accept the offer, you must pay the fees<br />

<strong>an</strong>d charges due. This will include partial<br />

course fees, usually for one semester, plus<br />

the OSHC charge (if applicable). Once fees<br />

<strong>an</strong>d charges have been paid <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>y<br />

conditions specified in the offer have been<br />

met <strong>an</strong>d accepted by <strong>ACN</strong>, a Confirmation<br />

(recognition of prior learning) before<br />

<strong>an</strong>d <strong>ACN</strong>. Each application is assessed<br />

on a case-by-case basis. Your prior studies<br />

must have been completed within the<br />

last 10 years, <strong>an</strong>d certified academic<br />

tr<strong>an</strong>scripts must be included with<br />

your application.<br />

When do I apply for a visa?<br />

After <strong>ACN</strong> receives your fees, your place<br />

in your chosen course of study will be<br />

confirmed. An electronic Confirmation of<br />

Enrolment (CoE) will be sent to you or your<br />

agent. You will need to present this to <strong>an</strong><br />

Australi<strong>an</strong> High Commission, Embassy<br />

or Consulate in your home country when<br />

applying for a student visa. See page 28<br />

for more information.<br />

Be sure to allow enough time for your visa<br />

to be processed before you pl<strong>an</strong> to travel<br />

to Australia. You should allow at least six<br />

weeks before the course begins, although<br />

this timeframe may vary from country<br />

to country.<br />

countries may need to undergo a pre-visa<br />

C<strong>an</strong>cellation <strong>an</strong>d refund policy<br />

The <strong>ACN</strong>/La Trobe University policy on the refund of<br />

tuition fees has been determined in accord<strong>an</strong>ce with<br />

the National Code of Practice for Registration<br />

Authorities <strong>an</strong>d Providers of Education <strong>an</strong>d Training<br />

to Overseas Students (“the National Code”), the<br />

Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000<br />

(“ESOS Act 2000”) <strong>an</strong>d Education Services for<br />

Overseas Student Regulations 2001 (“ESOS<br />

Regulations 2001”). This policy applies to all<br />

commencing <strong>an</strong>d continuing international <strong>an</strong>d<br />

domestic students, irrespective of who pays the<br />

tuition fees.<br />

Import<strong>an</strong>t note<br />

In the event that:<br />

a. <strong>ACN</strong> does not begin the course on the agreed<br />

start date; or<br />

b. the course ceases to be provided by La Trobe<br />

University through <strong>ACN</strong> at <strong>an</strong>y time after it<br />

starts, but before it is completed; or<br />

c. the course is not provided in full to the student<br />

because a s<strong>an</strong>ction has been imposed on La<br />

Trobe University under Part 6 of the ESOS Act<br />

2000 <strong>an</strong>d the student has not withdrawn before<br />

the day of default;<br />

then all tuition fees paid by the student are fully<br />

refundable within two weeks after the default day,<br />

in accord<strong>an</strong>ce with the provisions of the ESOS Act<br />

2000 <strong>an</strong>d the ESOS Regulations 2001.<br />

1.0 Refunds<br />

A student who fails to meet degree/diploma<br />

progression rules or attend<strong>an</strong>ce requirements<br />

<strong>an</strong>d who is not permitted to re-enrol will be<br />

eligible for a refund of fees paid in adv<strong>an</strong>ce<br />

of notification of exclusion.<br />

1.1 In the event that <strong>an</strong> offer of a place is withdrawn<br />

because the offer was made by La Trobe<br />

University on the basis of incorrect or<br />

incomplete information being supplied by the<br />

applic<strong>an</strong>t/student the tuition fees paid for the<br />

semester are refundable less <strong>an</strong> administrative<br />

fee of up to 10% of the tuition fee for<br />

one semester.<br />

1.2 In the event that <strong>an</strong> offer of a place is withdrawn<br />

or the University is unable to provide the course,<br />

all tuition fees paid for the semester are fully<br />

refundable, unless the offer was made on the<br />

basis of incorrect or incomplete information<br />

being supplied by the applic<strong>an</strong>t/student in<br />

which case <strong>ACN</strong> reserves the right to retain<br />

up to 10% of the fee for one semester.<br />

1.3 Where a student, after accepting <strong>an</strong> offer of a<br />

place or enrolling for the next semester, gives a<br />

minimum of four weeks written notice before the<br />

commencement of the semester of <strong>an</strong> inability<br />

to undertake the course, the tuition fees paid<br />

for the semester are refundable less <strong>an</strong><br />

administrative fee of up to 10% of the tuition<br />

fee for one semester.<br />

1.4 Where a student gives less th<strong>an</strong> four weeks<br />

written notice before the commencement of the<br />

semester of <strong>an</strong> inability to undertake the course,<br />

50% of the tuition fees paid for the semester are<br />

refundable <strong>an</strong>d the student is liable for 50% of<br />

<strong>an</strong>y fees charged.<br />

1.5 Where a student withdraws from a course after<br />

the commencement of the course but within<br />

the first four teaching weeks of the semester,<br />

50% of tuition fees paid for the semester are<br />

refundable <strong>an</strong>d the student is liable for 50%<br />

of <strong>an</strong>y fees charged.<br />

2.0 Refunds in exceptional circumst<strong>an</strong>ces<br />

Where a student or the student’s personal<br />

representative in the case of the death of a<br />

student gives written notice prior to the end<br />

of the Friday of the fourth week of the semester<br />

that he or she is withdrawing from a course due<br />

to exceptional circumst<strong>an</strong>ces being:<br />

a. inability to obtain a student visa; or<br />

b. illness or disability; or<br />

c. death of the student or a close family<br />

member (parent, sibling, spouse or child) or;<br />

d. a political, civil or natural event which<br />

prevents full payment of fees or the<br />

student’s attend<strong>an</strong>ce;<br />

La Trobe University, as applicable, may in its<br />

sole discretion having regard to the exceptional<br />

circumst<strong>an</strong>ces gr<strong>an</strong>t a total or partial refund of<br />

tuition fees subject to the provision of<br />

documentary evidence in support of the<br />

application for a refund which is acceptable to<br />

La Trobe University.<br />

3.0 Deferral of studies<br />

Subject to section 4.0 of this policy, where a<br />

student, after accepting <strong>an</strong> offer of a place,<br />

gives written notice before or after the<br />

commencement of the course up to <strong>an</strong>d<br />

including the Friday of the fourth week of the<br />

semester of their intention to defer their place in<br />

the course to the next available intake, all tuition<br />

fees will be tr<strong>an</strong>sferred to the next available<br />

intake. The “next available intake” may be the<br />

following semester, or the following year,<br />

depending on the course. A place may be<br />

deferred for up to 12 months. If, after deferring,<br />

a student gives written notice that they do not<br />

intend to take up their deferred place, 50% of the<br />

tuition fees paid are refundable.<br />

4.0 No refunds<br />

A student who withdraws or defers from a<br />

course for whatever reason after the Friday<br />

of the fourth week of the semester shall not<br />

be eligible for a refund of tuition fees paid<br />

for that semester <strong>an</strong>d will be eligible for <strong>an</strong>y<br />

fees charged. Note: This also applies to<br />

continuing students.<br />

5.0 Fee refunds related to International students<br />

who obtain perm<strong>an</strong>ent resident visa status.<br />

5.1 An international student who is gr<strong>an</strong>ted<br />

Perm<strong>an</strong>ent Resident status in Australia is liable<br />

to pay the Domestic Student fees. Perm<strong>an</strong>ent<br />

Resident status is recognised from the date<br />

stamped on the student’s passport, not the date<br />

on which the application for status is made. If<br />

the student has already paid the tuition fees<br />

applying to international students for the<br />

semester, a total refund of these fees will be<br />

payable to the student if the student has<br />

obtained Perm<strong>an</strong>ent Resident status by the<br />

Friday of the fourth week of the semester.<br />

5.2 If the student obtains Perm<strong>an</strong>ent Resident<br />

Status after the first four teaching weeks of a<br />

semester, the student will be classified as <strong>an</strong><br />

international student for the remainder of<br />

that semester.<br />

5.3 The student will be liable to pay the tuition fees<br />

applying to international students for that<br />

semester. From the following semester, the<br />

student will be classified as a Perm<strong>an</strong>ent<br />

Resident <strong>an</strong>d will be liable to pay the Domestic<br />

Student fees.<br />

6.0 Student ‘Request for Release’ <strong>an</strong>d Refunds<br />

When a student who has not yet completed<br />

6 months of study in their principal course<br />

requests a release from <strong>ACN</strong> / La Trobe<br />

University, this release may be gr<strong>an</strong>ted in<br />

exceptional circumst<strong>an</strong>ces (see ENR 3.4 —<br />

Student Tr<strong>an</strong>sfer Request Policy for details).<br />

A student may be entitled to a refund, subject to<br />

the conditions in the section 1.0–4.0 above.<br />

7.0 Agreement<br />

When La Trobe University accepts <strong>an</strong><br />

international student’s application for enrolment<br />

this policy on the refund of tuition fees will<br />

constitute a written agreement between<br />

La Trobe University, as applicable, <strong>an</strong>d the<br />

international student for the purposes of the<br />

ESOS Act 2000 <strong>an</strong>d the National Code.<br />

8.0 Payment of refunds<br />

8.1 Students seeking a refund must apply in writing<br />

to the Admissions M<strong>an</strong>ager of <strong>ACN</strong> no later<br />

th<strong>an</strong> four weeks after the commencement of<br />

the semester<br />

8.2 Refunds will be reimbursed in the same<br />

currency as the fees were originally paid in<br />

<strong>an</strong>d will normally be made in the student’s<br />

home country.<br />

8.3 Refunds (including <strong>an</strong>y discretionary refund<br />

gr<strong>an</strong>ted under section 2.0 of this policy) will be<br />

paid to the student within 4 weeks after receipt<br />

of a written claim from the student.<br />

9.0 Review process related to fees refund<br />

9.1 Any decision made by La Trobe University<br />

through <strong>ACN</strong> relating to the refund of fees<br />

is subject to review by the University<br />

Ombudsm<strong>an</strong> pursu<strong>an</strong>t to the University’s<br />

Statutes <strong>an</strong>d Regulations.<br />

9.2 This agreement does not remove the right to<br />

take further action under Australia’s consumer<br />

protection laws.<br />
