Foundation Studies Program 

The La Trobe Foundation Studies Program is 

designed to bring international students to 

the same academic level as Australian Year 

12 students. To gain entry to this program, 

you must first complete the appropriate 

academic course in your country or 

in Australia. 

Diploma courses 

La Trobe diploma programs are an alternative 

stand-alone qualification or pathway for 

students who wish to undertake a university 

degree. Each diploma course introduces the 

Australian university style of learning, and 

helps you develop skills in oral and written 

English, researching, note taking, essay 

writing, report writing and oral presentations. 

During the course, you will complete eight 

academic units, either over eight months 

(Fast track) or 12 months (Standard) — see 

Course Structure table on page 7. We 

provide extra lecture and tutorial time during 

semesters — you will have a three-hour 

lecture and a two-hour tutorial to help you 

gain the necessary skills for universitylevel 

study. 

English entry requirements for direct entry 

to Diploma are IELTS academic 6.0 (with no 

band less than 5.5). 

Provisional Admissions Pathway 

If you meet the academic entry requirement 

for Diploma but only have an IELTS score of 

5.5 (minimum of 5.0 in any band) you can 

choose the Provisional Admissions Pathway. 

In this program you must successfully 

complete an additional unit in Academic 

Study Skills for Diploma Programs during 

the first semester.

bachelor degree with ACN, you are taking

Our Bachelor of Business will keep you up to date with

Navitas family bursaries 

Navitas offers financial support in the form 

of family bursaries. A bursary applies where 

two or more students from the same family 

study with a Navitas member institution.* 

The first family member can be studying 

with a Navitas member institution at the 

same time as other family members, or 

they may have previously studied with any 

Navitas member institution. The bursary 

is granted to the second and subsequent 

family members who study with a Navitas 

member institution. For the purpose of 

this bursary, a family member is defined 

as a husband, wife, brother, sister, mother, 

father, son, daughter or stepchild. 

The bursary is equivalent to 10 percent of 

tuition fee for the first attempt at units or 

courses in the program of study (i.e. a 

certificate, diploma, University Transfer 

Program (UTP), University Pathway 

Program, bachelor’s degree, pre-master’s 

program, postgraduate qualifying program 

or master’s degree) † with a Navitas member 

institution (excluding the Mixed English 

option). ‡ This amount is credited to the 

eligible student’s tuition fee account each 

academic term, with the amount being

merit scholarships 

Navitas is committed to helping students 

achieve their career goals by offering 

scholarships to outstanding students.** 

Navitas academic merit scholarships 

are awarded each term by each Navitas 

pathway college or managed campus. 

Two students with the highest GPA in 

four or more subjects or courses will 

each receive a scholarship. 

The scholarships cover: 

• one academic term or part thereof at a 

Navitas member institution (equivalent 

to the tuition fees for a maximum of up 

to five academic subjects or courses) for: 

- a diploma, advanced diploma or 

associate degree (Australia) 

- UTP Stage II or associate 

degree (Canada) 

- UPP or IUTP (United States) 

- undergraduate pathway program 

(United Kingdom); or 

• one semester of undergraduate study 

at ACN, Curtin Sydney, Curtin Singapore

The scholarships are applied to the tuition

Students must be enrolled as a full time 

student to qualify for the scholarships. 

The scholarship panel from each Navitas 

member institution will announce the 

recipients of the Navitas academic merit 

scholarships upon the completion of each 

term and the release of the results. The 

recipients will be notified by mail and the 

successful students posted on the college 

website by consent. Students are not 

required to apply for the scholarship, as it is 

awarded based on academic performance 

and all students are eligible. 

Scholarship policy 

1. Two scholarships for one academic 

term’s tuition are offered at all Navitas 

member institutions each. 

2. Where the Academic Assessment 

Committee must differentiate between 

equally qualified applicants, additional 

factors such as educational 

disadvantage, membership of a specific 

equity group and/or significantly 

adverse personal circumstances may 

be taken into account. 

3. Students are eligible to qualify for the 

scholarships after successful 

completion of their first term and after 

commencing their second term. 

4. Students can only be awarded the 

scholarship once. 

5. Students already in receipt of a 

scholarship may not be eligible for

Our Academic Development Unit offers 

free workshops covering a range of topics

their learning experience. Our staff members

who are in need of additional attention

Do I need a student visa? 

All international students must possess a 

current student visa while they are studying 

in Australia. This information does not apply 

to prospective students who are Australian 

or New Zealand citizens or permanent 

residents of Australia. 

How do I apply? 

Prospective international students intending 

to study in Australia must obtain a student 

visa from an Australian High Commission, 

Embassy or Consulate in their home country 

before travelling. Some students can also 

apply online: to find out if you are eligible, 

visit immi.gov.au/e_visa/students.htm. 

All international students must comply with 

current visa conditions and regulations 

determined by the Australian Department 

of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). 

What are the visa requirements? 

There are requirements that must be met 

before a student visa is issued, and these 

vary from country to country. The main 

requirements for a visa application as a 

prospective ACN student may include: 

• a Letter of Offer from ACN 

• an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment 

(CoE) from ACN, which is issued after 

you have paid your first trimester’s 

tuition fees and other required fees 

• a medical check-up

What are the visa conditions? 

To maintain your visa, you must: 

• study full time while in Australia 

• maintain satisfactory academic progress 

and required attendance* 

• maintain a valid enrolment at ACN

Do I need health cover? 

As a condition of your student visa, you must 

maintain Overseas Student Health Cover 

(OSHC) while in Australia. You must obtain 

this cover for the proposed duration of your 

visa. If you have an accident or health 

problem within Australia, you will be able 

to redeem some or all of your medical costs. 

ACN can organise OSHC on your behalf.

How long is my visa valid? 

Your student visa will be issued for the 

duration of your ACN course, as stated in the 

CoE that you will receive from ACN. 

How do I renew my visa? 

It is your responsibility to renew or extend 

your visa as required, before it expires. You 

must present specific documents when 

applying for a student visa extension or 

renewal. A checklist and the required forms 

are available at studyinaustralia.gov.au. 

Can I work in Australia while on 

a student visa? 

If you are an international student currently 

enrolled and attending classes, you may 

work up to 20 hours per week while your 

course is in session, and full-time hours 

during scheduled course breaks. However, 

you should not rely on part-time work to 

support your study, as the amount you earn 

will be unlikely to cover all your living costs. 

Please be aware that your primary purpose 

in Australia while on a student visa is to 

study, and that any work you undertake 

must not interfere with your studies. 

What if I have dependants? 

If you are a prospective international student 

and you have any school-aged dependants 

coming to Australia with you, you must pay 

full fees for each dependant who is to be 

enrolled in a government or nongovernment 

school. 

The provision of education to international students is regulated by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) through the Education 

Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) legislative framework. An overview of this framework, including the rights and responsibilities of international students, is

What happens next? 

If your application is successful you will 

receive a Letter of Offer explaining the 

course that has been offered, specified 

conditions, the fees payable, orientation 

details and course commencement dates. 

To accept the offer, you must pay the fees 

and charges due. This will include partial 

course fees, usually for one semester, plus 

the OSHC charge (if applicable). Once fees 

and charges have been paid and any 

conditions specified in the offer have been 

met and accepted by ACN, a Confirmation 

of Enrolment (CoE) will be issued.

HECS-HELP loan scheme, which helps pay 

all or part of your tuition fees. You must be

New Zealand citizens are not eligible for 

HECS-HELP, unless they are also Australian

Can I apply for 

credit exemptions? 

You may apply for credit exemptions 

(recognition of prior learning) before 

you enrol. The decision to grant advance 

standing is made by La Trobe University 

and ACN. Each application is assessed 

on a case-by-case basis. Your prior studies 

must have been completed within the 

last 10 years, and certified academic 

transcripts must be included with 

your application. 

When do I apply for a visa? 

After ACN receives your fees, your place 

in your chosen course of study will be 

confirmed. An electronic Confirmation of 

Enrolment (CoE) will be sent to you or your 

agent. You will need to present this to an 

Australian High Commission, Embassy 

or Consulate in your home country when 

applying for a student visa. See page 28 

for more information. 

Be sure to allow enough time for your visa 

to be processed before you plan to travel 

to Australia. You should allow at least six 

weeks before the course begins, although 

this timeframe may vary from country 

to country. 

Please note: Citizens and residents of some 

countries may need to undergo a pre-visa 

assessment through an Australian High 

Commission, Embassy or Consulate before 

any payments can be made to ACN. This 

may take an additional four to six weeks.

Cancellation and refund policy 

The ACN/La Trobe University policy on the refund of 

tuition fees has been determined in accordance with 

the National Code of Practice for Registration 

Authorities and Providers of Education and Training 

to Overseas Students (“the National Code”), the 

Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 

(“ESOS Act 2000”) and Education Services for 

Overseas Student Regulations 2001 (“ESOS 

Regulations 2001”). This policy applies to all 

commencing and continuing international and 

domestic students, irrespective of who pays the 

tuition fees. 

Important note 

In the event that: 

a. ACN does not begin the course on the agreed 

start date; or 

b. the course ceases to be provided by La Trobe 

University through ACN at any time after it 

starts, but before it is completed; or 

c. the course is not provided in full to the student 

because a sanction has been imposed on La 

Trobe University under Part 6 of the ESOS Act 

2000 and the student has not withdrawn before 

the day of default; 

then all tuition fees paid by the student are fully 

refundable within two weeks after the default day, 

in accordance with the provisions of the ESOS Act 

2000 and the ESOS Regulations 2001. 

1.0 Refunds 

A student who fails to meet degree/diploma 

progression rules or attendance requirements 

and who is not permitted to re-enrol will be 

eligible for a refund of fees paid in advance 

of notification of exclusion. 

1.1 In the event that an offer of a place is withdrawn 

because the offer was made by La Trobe 

University on the basis of incorrect or 

incomplete information being supplied by the 

applicant/student the tuition fees paid for the 

semester are refundable less an administrative 

fee of up to 10% of the tuition fee for 

one semester. 

1.2 In the event that an offer of a place is withdrawn 

or the University is unable to provide the course, 

all tuition fees paid for the semester are fully 

refundable, unless the offer was made on the 

basis of incorrect or incomplete information 

being supplied by the applicant/student in 

which case ACN reserves the right to retain 

up to 10% of the fee for one semester. 

1.3 Where a student, after accepting an offer of a 

place or enrolling for the next semester, gives a 

minimum of four weeks written notice before the 

commencement of the semester of an inability 

to undertake the course, the tuition fees paid 

for the semester are refundable less an 

administrative fee of up to 10% of the tuition 

fee for one semester. 

1.4 Where a student gives less than four weeks 

written notice before the commencement of the 

semester of an inability to undertake the course, 

50% of the tuition fees paid for the semester are 

refundable and the student is liable for 50% of 

any fees charged. 

1.5 Where a student withdraws from a course after 

the commencement of the course but within 

the first four teaching weeks of the semester, 

50% of tuition fees paid for the semester are 

refundable and the student is liable for 50% 

of any fees charged. 

2.0 Refunds in exceptional circumstances 

Where a student or the student’s personal 

representative in the case of the death of a 

student gives written notice prior to the end 

of the Friday of the fourth week of the semester 

that he or she is withdrawing from a course due 

to exceptional circumstances being: 

a. inability to obtain a student visa; or 

b. illness or disability; or 

c. death of the student or a close family 

member (parent, sibling, spouse or child) or; 

d. a political, civil or natural event which 

prevents full payment of fees or the 

student’s attendance; 

La Trobe University, as applicable, may in its 

sole discretion having regard to the exceptional 

circumstances grant a total or partial refund of 

tuition fees subject to the provision of 

documentary evidence in support of the 

application for a refund which is acceptable to 

La Trobe University. 

3.0 Deferral of studies 

Subject to section 4.0 of this policy, where a 

student, after accepting an offer of a place, 

gives written notice before or after the 

commencement of the course up to and 

including the Friday of the fourth week of the 

semester of their intention to defer their place in 

the course to the next available intake, all tuition 

fees will be transferred to the next available 

intake. The “next available intake” may be the 

following semester, or the following year, 

depending on the course. A place may be 

deferred for up to 12 months. If, after deferring, 

a student gives written notice that they do not 

intend to take up their deferred place, 50% of the 

tuition fees paid are refundable. 

4.0 No refunds 

A student who withdraws or defers from a 

course for whatever reason after the Friday 

of the fourth week of the semester shall not 

be eligible for a refund of tuition fees paid 

for that semester and will be eligible for any 

fees charged. Note: This also applies to 

continuing students. 

5.0 Fee refunds related to International students 

who obtain permanent resident visa status. 

5.1 An international student who is granted 

Permanent Resident status in Australia is liable 

to pay the Domestic Student fees. Permanent 

Resident status is recognised from the date 

stamped on the student’s passport, not the date 

on which the application for status is made. If 

the student has already paid the tuition fees 

applying to international students for the 

semester, a total refund of these fees will be 

payable to the student if the student has 

obtained Permanent Resident status by the 

Friday of the fourth week of the semester. 

5.2 If the student obtains Permanent Resident 

Status after the first four teaching weeks of a 

semester, the student will be classified as an 

international student for the remainder of 

that semester. 

5.3 The student will be liable to pay the tuition fees 

applying to international students for that 

semester. From the following semester, the 

student will be classified as a Permanent 

Resident and will be liable to pay the Domestic 

Student fees. 

6.0 Student ‘Request for Release’ and Refunds 

When a student who has not yet completed 

6 months of study in their principal course 

requests a release from ACN / La Trobe 

University, this release may be granted in 

exceptional circumstances (see ENR 3.4 — 

Student Transfer Request Policy for details). 

A student may be entitled to a refund, subject to 

the conditions in the section 1.0–4.0 above. 

7.0 Agreement 

When La Trobe University accepts an 

international student’s application for enrolment 

this policy on the refund of tuition fees will 

constitute a written agreement between 

La Trobe University, as applicable, and the 

international student for the purposes of the 

ESOS Act 2000 and the National Code. 

8.0 Payment of refunds 

8.1 Students seeking a refund must apply in writing 

to the Admissions Manager of ACN no later 

than four weeks after the commencement of 

the semester 

8.2 Refunds will be reimbursed in the same 

currency as the fees were originally paid in 

and will normally be made in the student’s 

home country. 

8.3 Refunds (including any discretionary refund 

granted under section 2.0 of this policy) will be 

paid to the student within 4 weeks after receipt 

of a written claim from the student. 

9.0 Review process related to fees refund 

9.1 Any decision made by La Trobe University 

through ACN relating to the refund of fees 

is subject to review by the University 

Ombudsman pursuant to the University’s 

Statutes and Regulations. 

9.2 This agreement does not remove the right to 

take further action under Australia’s consumer 

protection laws. 

Privacy statement 

a. The university may disclose personal 

information provided by students: 

i. to its service providers, such as organisations 

that assist students with their applications 

and the finalisation, processing and 

administration of those applications; 

ii. to arrange health insurance cover; 

iii. where disclosure is required or allowed by 

law; and 

iv. where the student has otherwise consented. 

b. The university may disclose personal 

information provided by students relating to the 

student and any other members of the student’s 

family who are covered under the student’s 

overseas student health cover membership to
