Leeds is a truly
cosmopolitan city,
catering for all tastes
and interests.
LEEDS & KEIGHLEY
As the fourth largest city in the UK after London,
Birmingham and Manchester, Leeds is exciting,
ever growing, and frequently ranks as among the
most popular student destinations in the country
as well as a cost effective place to study.
Whether it’s socialising or shopping, sport, culture
or an escape from the hustle and bustle – Leeds
has it all.
Keighley is located in the Aire Valley on a direct
train route from Leeds and about ten miles from
the centres of Bradford, Halifax and Skipton. It
offers the best of both worlds - a town centre
large enough to offer a wide range of shops
with a pleasant mix of small independent traders
alongside major retailers. The surrounding
countryside offers a wealth of leisure opportunities
and is a popular international visitor attraction for
walkers and Brontë fans.
OUR ESTATES VISION
This year we have taken forward plans to enhance
our estates portfolio with an exciting 10 year
property strategy.
Phase 1 of the Property Strategy was the opening
of a brand new £35m Keighley Campus in
September 2010, after two and a half years under
construction.
The property strategy plans will mean the
improvement of many of our other campuses
phased over several years, and include extensive
renovation and relocation of various subject areas.
The next phase of the plan is the relocation of
our Thomas Danby Campus provision (Roundhay
Road) in summer 2013. You may have read in the
news that Leeds City College purchased the former
Alf Cooke Printworks building (near Costco) on
Hunslet Road in Leeds.
Work has already commenced to clear the site and
building work began in September 2012.
During the spring/summer of 2013, the
Hospitality & Catering, Food Manufacturing, and
Hair and Beauty departments currently based at
Thomas Danby Campus will all relocate to the
fantastic Printworks Campus.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our open
events / tours of the fantastic new Printworks
Campus as soon as dates are announced in 2013.
STORIES AND
EXPERIENCES
Olympic Success: The College was heavily
involved with the London 2012 Olympic Games,
with students taking part in everything from
carrying the Olympic torch, baking cakes for
celebration events in Leeds, dancing to crowds
on the relay route, and helping out as torch
ambassadors. Team GB’s Nicola Adams (who
became the first female boxer to win an Olympic
gold medal in the Women’s Fly Final) was a
former student of Leeds City College on the
National Diploma in Software Development.
College Opens New Dining Destination:
Leeds City College has joined up with The
Flannels group to open a restaurant in a
prestigious city centre location. The Food
Academy, on the third floor of Flannels,
Leeds, showcases the College’s most talented
students. On completing training, students
who excel have the opportunity to secure an
apprenticeship at the restaurant, providing
invaluable experience in a professional, high
quality environment. Recently, the students
have worked with Michelin-starred chef,
Steve Smith.
Sauce of Inspiration: The man behind Reggae
Reggae Sauce, Levi Roots, shared the story of his
rise to sauce super stardom with students at Leeds
City College. Levi visited the College’s Thomas
Danby Campus to chat to Hospitality & Catering and
Business students about setting up and succeeding
in business. His appearance on the BBC’s Dragons’
Den brought both Levi and his Reggae Reggae Sauce
to the public’s attention, with his sauce now stocked
by major retailers and the Levi Roots brand extended
across a range of other products.
Once in a Lifetime Experience: Students and staff
from Leeds City College received the opportunity
of a lifetime when they were granted a private
audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama during
his visit to the city in 2012. The Tibetan spiritual
leader and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate was in
Leeds as the keynote speaker at the Yorkshire
International Business Convention (YIBC) Leeds
2012. As a sponsor of the YIBC, the College was
invited to bring 100 students and staff to meet
privately with the Dalai Lama, to enable him to give
a special message to the young people of the city.
CHOOSING THE
RIGHT COURSE
Where to start?
For some people it’s easy knowing what to
study. If you really want to be a Plumber, then
studying Dance may not be the right choice...
and vice-versa.
If you’re not sure what you can do, want to do
or how to do it, we have a few tips to help you
decide.
Consider the following when choosing
your course:
• Your Skills and Talents
Think about where your strengths lie. You might
want to list them or sit and talk them through
with somebody who knows you well, like a friend
or family member or a teacher.
• Your Hobbies and Interests
Think about what interests you. Things are
easier to learn when we have a genuine interest
in the subject area. Try to make links between
your hobbies and interests and the courses on
offer. Talking to your family or friends can be
helpful here.
• Entry Requirements
All of our courses require that you can show
what skills and talents you have to offer, and
that you can show a genuine interest in the
subject. For some courses you will need to have
qualifications and be able to show evidence
of these. The entry requirements for all of our
courses appear in the College Prospectuses, on
the College website and on the Leeds Pathways
website.
Please check that you meet the entry
requirements for the course that you apply for.
• Your Career or Job Ideas
If you have a specific career or job idea, it is
important to make sure that your choice of
course will help you to achieve this. Some
people choose their career first and this
determines the course they apply for. Some
choose a course that they know they will
find interesting and then explore their career
options later. There is no right or wrong
approach to this but help and support is
available.
• Essential Skills Required for Work
We want to make sure that everyone has the
chance to improve or consolidate their skills
required for work and/or HE. All students who
haven’t achieved A*-C in Maths, English and
ICT will be able to study Functional Skills or
GCSEs in these areas at a level appropriate to
you. Employers tell us that these are essential
to work. They will also have the opportunity
to develop their ‘employability’ skills – selfmanagement,
team working, problem solving,
business and customer awareness, positive
attitude – as part of their learning programme.
