A Message From The Community Manager Terry DaSilva Community Manager Last month our Community elected a new Board. I have always wondered why people volunteered to serve on their Boards. What I have discovered is that the board volunteers all have some combination of an agenda, ego, available time and certain personality traits. However, most importantly I have concluded that in almost all cases, Board members have a sense of duty to their Community. This I believe is what drives them to serve. Besides the traits mentioned above, the single item they all have in common is their personal and professional diversity. Board members have an endless combination of many reasons as to why they serve. Our Board is from all walks of life with diverse personal and professional backgrounds. They come to us with or without association experience. This incredible mixture is dynamic and will affect how they develop as a functioning Board; and, this is a good thing. This time of development for a new Board is vital to our Community and we must understand and give them the time needed and allow them to evolve as a functioning and cohesive body. When any group of individuals is thrust together with a set of tasks and responsibilities to perform, they develop a system with special tasks assigned to each. Who takes what position on the Board can be very important in determining how well the Board functions overall. This structural process can have a profound effect on whether or not the Board is able to work together, deliberate, make decisions, take action and most importantly, move forward. There is a learning curve for brand new Board members, which automatically comes with challenges. This learning curve may be steep or shallow, fast or slow, but ultimately it all depends on their ability to work together as a unified group for the betterment of the Community for which they were elected to serve. Once elected, most new board members truly do not have a real concept of the scope of work facing them. Most are surprised to find that much of the work in running the Community is making decisions on behalf of the residents, in addition to the normal functions of setting policies, choosing contractors, etc. They soon find out that there is a lot more going on than meets the eye and this is a real “eye opener.” Our new Board of Directors has not had the time to develop a sense of trust with the Community or even with each other. This is the hardest part for them because they must develop trust to work together, but they must work together to begin to develop trust. This confusing period can be very frustrating to the Board members because they do not realize or understand the source of that frustration. I know our new Board members will be very appreciative of your patience and support and remember, they have a big job ahead of them, so let us give them a chance and the time to get up to speed, as I plan to do myself. ✸ — TERRY DASILVA, Community Manager Don’t Forget...
