A Message From The Community Manager

Community Manager 

Last month our Community elected a 

new Board. I have always wondered why 

people volunteered to serve on their 

Boards. What I have discovered is that the 

board volunteers all have some combination 

of an agenda, ego, available time and 

certain personality traits. However, most 

importantly I have concluded that in 

almost all cases, Board members have a 

sense of duty to their Community. This I 

believe is what drives them to serve. 

Besides the traits mentioned above, the single item they all have 

in common is their personal and professional diversity. Board 

members have an endless combination of many reasons as to 

why they serve. Our Board is from all walks of life with diverse 

personal and professional backgrounds. They come to us with 

or without association experience. This incredible mixture is 

dynamic and will affect how they develop as a functioning 

Board; and, this is a good thing. This time of development for 

a new Board is vital to our Community and we must understand 

and give them the time needed and allow them to evolve 

as a functioning and cohesive body. 

When any group of individuals is thrust together with a set 

of tasks and responsibilities to perform, they develop a system 

with special tasks assigned to each. Who takes what position on 

the Board can be very important in determining how well the 

Board functions overall. This structural process can have a profound 

effect on whether or not the Board is able to work 

together, deliberate, make decisions, take action and most 

importantly, move forward. There is a learning curve for brand 

new Board members, which automatically comes with challenges. 

This learning curve may be steep or shallow, fast or slow, 

but ultimately it all depends on their ability to work together as 

a unified group for the betterment of the Community for 

which they were elected to serve. 

Once elected, most new board members truly do not have a 

real concept of the scope of work facing them. Most are surprised 

to find that much of the work in running the 

Community is making decisions on behalf of the residents, in 

addition to the normal functions of setting policies, choosing 

contractors, etc. They soon find out that there is a lot more 

going on than meets the eye and this is a real “eye opener.” 

Our new Board of Directors has not had the time to develop 

a sense of trust with the Community or even with each other. 

This is the hardest part for them because they must develop trust 

to work together, but they must work together to begin to develop 

trust. This confusing period can be very frustrating to the 

Board members because they do not realize or understand the 

source of that frustration. I know our new Board members will 

be very appreciative of your patience and support and remember, 

they have a big job ahead of them, so let us give them a chance 

and the time to get up to speed, as I plan to do myself. ✸

A Message From Your Board President...

Board President 

May 24 marked a new beginning for Sun City Anthem. The seating of the 

current Executive Board completed our transition from an Association controlled 

by the Developer to 100% homeowner control. For the first time, our 

future as a community is entirely up to us, the homeowners of Sun City 

Anthem. 

You often hear that Transition occurred in May 2005 because that election 

marked the first time that a majority of our Directors were homeowners rather 

than DelWebb executives. In reality though, while we assumed responsibility 

for governance two years ago, since that time we have continued to use the 

policies and procedures put in place by Del Webb. In fact, some of the policies and procedures that 

we use today were put in place before the first lot was sold, and, as testament to their durability, 

most still serve us well and will continue to in the future. 

What won’t serve us well in the future is their vision for Sun City Anthem. Their decade-long 

effort to create an age-qualified community in the hills of Henderson, changing the image of the 

city and “elevating the already prestigious Sun City brand ” (LVRJ, Saturday, March 3, 2007, Nick 

Parks, VP of Marketing for Pulte Homes) is in its final phase. DelWebb is celebrating the Grand 

Finale and completing its final sales by summer’s end. Groundbreaking and the start of construction 

of Recreation Center III will occur by this fall with a completion date in mid-2008. And last 

month in Spirit, Sun City Anthem homeowners were invited to attend the grand opening celebration 

of Del Webb’s newest community, Sun City Mesquite, and offered loyalty awards towards the 

purchase of a new home there. 

It appears that in our eagerness to see the end of Del Webb control, we neglected to replace their 

vision for Sun City Anthem with one of our own. We neglected to create a long-range vision that 

would take our community beyond Transition, beyond build-out, through 2007 and beyond. As 

the first President of an SCA Executive Board made up entirely of homeowners, I believe that leading 

the development of a new vision for Sun City Anthem is my highest priority. Just as Del 

Webb’s vision for us was long in the making, developing our own vision for the future of Sun City 

Anthem will take several months, and our success depends on the involvement and ideas of all of 

us. What do we want our community to be like in the future? Where do we want to go next? What 

do we need and need to do to make our vision a reality? These are the questions that Del Webb 

answered for us a decade ago, and that we must now answer for ourselves, for our community, for 

our future. 

I believe that our greatest challenge in developing a new vision for Sun City Anthem is to first 

make sure we all know where we are, as Del Webb’s vision comes to an end over the coming 

months. To address this challenge, we are undertaking three key initiatives: 

Implement a Document Management System to improve access to Association documents and 

records; Develop a 5-year Business Plan and Operational Processes to ensure that we remain financially 

strong, well-run, and well-managed; Establish an integrated Communication Plan that 

enables us to use the wealth of media available to share information and keep the community 

informed on association matters. 

The Board members leading these initiatives will be looking for willing and eager volunteers to 

lend your collective skills to these efforts. I invite and encourage each of you to lend your wealth 

of experience and expertise to bring these initiatives to fruition. With these intiatives underway, we 

will all gain a common understanding of where we are, and can begin, as a community, to develop 

our own vision for the future of Sun City Anthem. ✸

A Successful Community Association

During the recent Board of Directors election 

campaign, one of the most frequently addressed 

issues was the need for more open and respectful 

communications. Both the Board candidates 

and the residents of our community felt that 

more listening by the Board, more sharing of 

information by all community groups, and 

greater voice given to our shared concerns 

would make us a much stronger community. 

Residents wanted the Association and its managers to be more 

responsive to their concerns, provide them with greater voice regarding 

important issues that affect them, and protect their interests. The 

residents wanted the new Board to encourage connection, collaboration, 

and exchange. 

As Mike Dixon states in his comments as President, the new 

Board is committed to a fresh beginning and an updated communications 

plan will be a central element to developing this stronger 

sense of community. An effective community communications strategy 

could supply the “glue” that binds us all more closely together. 

Community Associations like ours are voluntary, geographically distributed 

organizations, and a “sense of community” is critical to their 

long-term viability. Community Associations link members to one 

another, and to the larger world. They inform people, they serve as a 

unified voice for residents, and they need to provide residents with a 

sense that their interests are being managed efficiently and effectively. 

An effective communications strategy is one tool for accomplishing 

this goal. As a community, we need more timely access to all 

kinds of information; and the Board has to provide this information

with budget responsibility and appropriate quality control. That is 

why we need a new, comprehensive plan for open and respectful communications. 

There was a residential effort to get a communication plan going 

in 2005, but the plan was never completed. The mission for that earlier 

plan said: 

“A Communications Committee is to develop and guide a complete 

Sun City Anthem communications program to keep residents fully 

informed about community news and activities. Utilizing our broadcast, 

Internet and print media, the committee’s goals are to: enhance residents’ 

knowledge of and activity in all aspects of Sun City Anthem life; provide 

opportunities for, and encourage participation in volunteer activities; 

improve the two-way flow of information between residents and the management/leadership 

of the community; and to foster a sense of belonging 

to an extended family with common interests.” 

In the weeks ahead, the Board, the Community Manager, and 

community volunteers will revisit this earlier plan with a fresh 

understanding of its importance. We will strengthen the original 

concept and together we will craft a communications strategy that 

will deliver what we promised. We will be giving all of you a voice 

in our common future and provide you with the timely and useful 

information that you need. 

In the final analysis, a strong sense of community is really about 

creating an environment where people can communicate, work 

together and achieve the lifestyles we sought when we came to Sun 

City Anthem. Your 2007 Board is looking forward to working with 

you in pursuit of these goals! ✸

Recently, several locations have been reported for 

having oleanders. Please be reminded that they are 

prohibited and must be removed. Prohibited plants 

for Sun City Anthem include olive (all types), oleander, 

mulberry and Bermuda Grass. Also, for your 

information, the ARC can no longer approve grass in 

the front yard (City Restriction). However, you may 

have up to fifty percent of your rear yard in grass if 

you so desire. 

Please submit all exterior changes to your property 

to the ARC prior to having the work done. This 

prevents costly mistakes that would be required to be 

corrected. The ARC meets each Thursday morning 

at 9:00 a.m. to review plans. The meeting is held in 

the Emerson-Franklin room at Anthem Center. ✸

Upon motion duly made by Dave Weil, seconded by

accepted and approved the Financial Statement of March

Berman recusing themselves from the vote on the 

Resolution Establishing use of the Community Service 


Board Meeting Summary 

Resolutions Adopted by the SCACAI Board of Directors

The Finance Committee functions at the direction of the 

SCACAI Board of Directors. A few of the responsibilities of 

the Finance Committee are to: 

• Analyze and advise on expenditure requests and reserve 

fund appropriations. 

• Recommend annual operating and reserve budgets, 

including the homeowner’s assessment, to SCACAI BOD. 

• Perform reviews of SCACAI financial statements. 

• Review audit reports and reserve studies. 

• Work with the chartered clubs on their financial 

reporting. 

The Finance Committee has openings for Sun City 

Anthem residents with solid experience in accounting, budgeting, 

finance, or business management. More information 

on the SCACAI Finance Committee is available on the 

Association website at www.sca-hoa.org, or by contacting the 

Committee Chairperson, Don Manning. If you are interested 

in joining our Finance Committee team, please submit 

your resume and background to the Community Manager,

SCA Administrative Offices in Anthem Center. 

Current members of the Finance Committee include 

Chairman Don Manning, Vice-Chair Guy Lalouche, Jack

The Finance Committee soon will begin working on the 

2008 Budgets with RMI and the new Board of Directors. 

There will be several key issues to consider, and community 

input will be very important as we move through this important 

budget development cycle. 

All Finance Committee meetings are open to the public.

more about the financial workings of our community.

For the last two months the Lifestyle Committee has 

been discussing the rental of our facilities to the non residents. 

At the May and June meetings, the committee 

voted to recommend to the SCA Board that only resident

Our workshops are held on the first Thursday of each 

month. This gives residents the opportunity to come and 

tell us that their concerns are and they may also discuss our 

agenda items. We encourage all club presidents to attend 

all of our meetings so that we may learn of their activities 

and can give our quick approval. No decisions are made at 

our workshops. However, at our meetings the committee 

members discuss our agenda items and we do vote and 

take action. All residents are welcome at both workshops 

and meetings.

Sun City Anthem Security Patrol 

Since January 2007, our Security Patrol articles have identified and explained the various 

job tasks or assignments we address on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. We have highlighted 

individual volunteers and explained their specific duties. Now, in this article we will 

highlight the duties of Security Patrol Management: Chief; Assistant Chief for 

Administration; Assistant Chief for Operations; and Watch Commanders. 

We have seven Watch Commander (WC) positions (one per each 24 hour shift, per seven 

day week). The WC’s oversee the work efforts of the Dispatchers, and the Drivers. Their daily 

job tasks include inspecting our vehicles at the beginning of each shift to determine if there 

are any safety items that need to be addressed, and to determine if each vehicle contains the 

required equipment, and if they are clean and ready to drive. In addition, the WC’s review 

the previous day’s Driver Logs and Dispatcher Logs to determine if there are any specific matters 

of interest that need to be brought to the attention of either of the Assistant Chiefs or the 

Chief. The WC may drive a route during his or her shift, or ride with any driver or drivers 

if he or she wishes, or they may elect to remain in the office to provide a warm body for the 

Dispatcher to look at. 

We have two Assistant Chiefs, one for Administration and one for Operations. Their duties vary from overseeing the work of 

the Watch Commanders, Dispatchers, and Drivers to reviewing the various daily logs and reports to determine if there are any 

issues that need to be addressed immediately, or that need to be brought to the attention of the Chief. In the absence of the Chief, 

the Assistant Chief for Administration has decision-making authority, and in his absence the Assistant Chief for Operations has 

equal decision-making authority. The Assistant Chief may wish to drive a route that day or ride with another driver, or he or she 

may wish to provide office support to the Dispatcher and Watch Commander. 

We have one Chief, and his duties are varied. The Chief is responsible to the SCA 

Association Manager, and ultimately to the SCA Board of Directors. He reviews all Driver 

Logs, Dispatcher Logs, Incident Reports, and Statistical Reports for purposes of assessing the 

overall security needs of the community. From the information provided in the various 

reports, the Chief determines what villages, or specific areas of our community, need additional 

security patrol coverage. Through the efforts of the Dispatcher responsible for scheduling 

shifts and the Dispatcher responsible for gathering statistical information, the Chief 

analyzes the data and produces a monthly report for review and use by SCA Association 

Management. The Chief analyzes all incident reports on a weekly basis for purposes of generating 

a monthly report that highlights all suspicious activity, property thefts, home breakins, 

vehicle break-ins, and acts of vandalism by the time of day (when available), by week or 

month, by village, and by the specific nature of the crime or troublesome activity. 

In my opinion, the Chief’s ultimate responsibility is to oversee the health and safety of the 

total SCA community, and equally to provide a stress free, happy, and enjoyable work environment 

for the Security Patrol volunteers. We always need more volunteers. ✸

chores such as cleaning or replacing overhead air filters, 

replacing batteries in smoke alarms and CO detectors, changing 

overhead light bulbs or lubricating garage doors. 

Home Assistance: Resource directory of information on feebased, 

discount, and many other services available to seniors. 

Volunteers will also shop and deliver groceries or prescription 

medication to residents who are temporarily homebound. 

Support Groups: CSC sponsors several support groups to assist 

the residents of Sun City Anthem.

• Bereavement (non denominational) 

• One-on-one grief counseling for loss of a child 

• One-on-one guidance through Jewish 

bereavement protocol

• Home Caregivers (for those caring for a loved one at home)

EMERGENCY 

PREPAREDNESS GROUP

The Sun City Anthem Emergency Preparedness Group (EPG) has 

responded to the prime directive from National Homeland Security to be 

able to survive, in the event of an emergency, for up to five days without 

outside help of any kind. Through training and education, the EPG is 

building a group of volunteers that will be knowledgeable of resident emergency 

procedures geared to a neighbor-helping-neighbor program. 

The first contact from the EPG to each resident is through the Block 

Captain. Block Captains check on approximately 20 homes in an emergency, 

and alert their District Command Post/First Aid Center to get help 

for residents during the emergency. They are the communications link to 

the command posts and First Aid Centers. (Block Captain training is held 

periodically at the Anthem Center. Once you volunteer, you will be 

informed of your training date). 

Once trained, the time you spend with EPG will only include updates 

and refreshers. The EPG will keep you informed as to what is new, via 

monthly meetings, emails, periodic telephone calls, and the www.scahoa.com 

Emergency Preparedness Group web page. 

Block Captains are assigned neighborhood areas, and visit residents to 

distribute the resident information packets. This packet contains a checklist 

covering all the necessary topics. The Block Captain also explains how the 

emergency program works and the completed checklist identifies residents 

with any special needs. 

In a ‘DECLARED EMERGENCY,’ the Emergency Operations Center 

(EOC) will activate. All residents will be contacted by telephone (land 

phones only; no cell phones) notifying them of the emergency. 

During the declared emergency, the resident information checklist will 

serve as a reminder of which homes in the Block Captain’s area have special 

needs and/or medical problems. Block Captains will report to their designated 

First Aid Center, where they will communicate whether help is needed 

at any of the homes for which they are responsible.

Jim and Kathy, originally from Indiana, moved to Sun City Anthem in late 2003 and 

have been pool monitors for about 3 years. Kathy began swimming as a child and competed 

on both the high school and college levels. She taught swimming and worked as a 

lifeguard when she was a teenager. She has worked in the health care field for the past 20 

years and still enjoys swimming as well as hiking, painting and drawing. 

Jim began water skiing when he was a teenager. He and Kathy enjoyed this activity most 

of their adult lives and taught their 2 sons to water ski when the boys were each 6 years 

old. Jim worked in the field of law enforcement for 36 years. He also enjoys swimming as 

well as woodworking, hiking, and most fitness activities. They have 3 grandchildren who 

live nearby and, of course, enjoy time with them.

and their guests, including children, after 8:00 pm on July 4th for 

viewing of the fireworks – no guest pass needed. To ensure a safe 

and fun time for all, please remember to follow a few 

safety policies:

area will close at 10:00 p.m. 

Normal Children’s Hours remain 

effective for pool use: 10:00 a.m. - 

12:00 p.m. outdoor pool, 12:00 p.m. 

- 2:00 p.m. indoor pool. 

Please do not bring chairs, glass containers, 

unnecessary items 

or alcoholic beverages 

into the Fitness Center. 

With pool season upon us its important to remind ourselves 

of our friend/enemy in the sky. You're never too young or too 

old to be harmed by the sun. It is responsible for more than 90 

percent of all skin cancers, which are now occurring at the epidemic 

rate of more than a million new cases each year in the 

United States. 

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that, in addition 

to an annual professional skin examination, you do a head-totoe 

self-examination at least once every three months. Call a 

doctor immediately if you see any of these warning signs: 

• A skin growth that increases in size and appears pearly, 

translucent, tan, brown, black, or multicolored. 

• A mole that changes in color or in texture, becomes irregular 

in outline, increases in size or thickness, or is greater than 1 /4” 

in diameter. 

• A spot or growth that continues to itch, hurt, scab, erode, or 

bleed. 

• An open sore that persists for more than four weeks or that 

heals and then reopens.

Fun In The Sun! 

Each year more than half of all new skin cancer cases occur in 

individuals over the age of 65. Blame a lifetime of sun exposure. 

Any older person who requires medication may be at increased 

risk of developing photosensitivity, an intense skin reaction to the 

sun, which can be triggered by a number of prescription drugs. 

When your doctor prescribes a medication, be sure to ask if it can 

produce such a response. The more carefully you practice sun 

safety, the healthier and more attractive your skin will stay. Please

Mesquite Grand Opening Was A Huge Success! 

Thousands of visitors from Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah 

arrived in Mesquite on June 16 and 17 for the grand opening of Del 

Webb’s newest age-qualified community, Sun City Mesquite. 

Sun City Mesquite, located about 90 miles northeast of Las Vegas near 

the Nevada-Arizona border, debuted 12 all-new model homes at the grand 

opening. Also open for the first time to the public was the sales center 

that features historic artifacts from both Del Webb’s history and the earliest 

settlers of the Mesquite area. 

Entertainment and refreshments were a part of the festivities throughout 

the weekend and there were also information booths on local services, 

and demonstrations on the energy efficiency of the homes and other 

aspects of the community. 

Sun City Mesquite will be among the premier Sun City communities 

in the nation with one of the most favorable locations imaginable. In addition 

to the Nevada address sought after by many retirement-age home 

buyers, Mesquite provides a leisurely, small-town lifestyle; medical, retail 

and entertainment facilities; and great access to both the excitement of 

Las Vegas and the quiet beauty of some of the most beloved national 

parks. 

Interest in Sun City Mesquite kicked into high gear over the past few 

months as Del Webb rolled out an information campaign. About 14,000 

registrants enrolled on the Pioneer VIP interest list, including people from 

every state in the nation. More than 4,000 prospective buyers attended the 

five informational seminars held recently in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and 

Mesquite. 

Many seminar attendees took advantage of the opportunity to 

reserve one of the first 100 homes released for sale in the community. 

The first residents are expected to take move into their homes in late 

July or early August. 

Sun City Mesquite is the flagship community of the 2,014-acre 

Anthem Mesquite community. It will feature a host of amenities designed 

for recreation and social interaction, including a recreation center with fitness 

facilities, rooms for club activities, a computer lab, a swimming pool 

area and various sports courts, including pickle ball, bocce and tennis. 

The homes are all single story designs, ranging from approximately 1,200 

to 3,100 square feet with two- or three-car garages. Prices start in the low 

$200’s. 

Central to Sun City Mesquite is an 18-hole golf course designed by the 

award-winning firm of Gary Panks & Associates of Scottsdale, Ariz. Upon 

completion, the community will comprise approximately 3,400 homes. 

Many of the community amenities in Sun City Mesquite are expected 

to be complete by the time the first residents move into their homes in July 

and the recreation center will be complete by November. A series of walking 

trails will link outdoor amenities and open space areas to the homes.

We provide a forum for information, support, and sharing 

our memoirs, poems, short stories, essays, or novels with fellow 

writers. 

Our club has published a second anthology titled, “The Write 

Stuff,” that includes a collection of the above-mentioned subjects. 

Margaret Wang, a member wrote the following on the back 

of our anthology: “Between the covers of this book is a collection 

of literary words written by the members of 

the Sun City Anthem Authors Club. Each 

piece is composed in a style that is unique 

to that one writer alone. Our writing styles 

may be different, or perhaps influenced by 

the diverse background of our membership, 

but we share the same desire to write. We welcome diversity, for 

it adds interest and color to our work, as evidenced in the contents 

of our anthology.” 

Through diligent efforts, a number of our authors have sharpened 

their creative skill to a point that they have the ability to 

move the readers to tears or induce hearty laughter.

E-Z MAKE ‘n TAKE CRAFTS: The craft for July will be creating 

charming fabric flowers and will be held on Monday, July

SCRAP BOOK: Open workshop hours are Mondays from 

1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Novice and experienced scrap bookers are 

welcome to attend. Learn how to preserve your photos for 100

RUBBER STAMPING: Introduction to rubber stamping will 

not be taught in July or August. All stamp classes meet at 1:00 

p.m. in the Arts & Crafts room with the addition of the first 

Thursday morning group that will also meet at 10:00 a.m. on 

the fourth Thursday. Friday with Sue Christensen will meet 

Friday, July 6 and July 20. You will learn stamping techniques, 

make greeting cards and make new friends. Sign up in the A/C 

room on the orange list. There is a $2 charge for materials. 

Please bring your basic supplies. The new Wednesday group 

will meet July 11 and 25. Sign up is required for preparation. 

There is $1 fee for material replacement. The first Thursday

COLORED PENCIL DRAWING: Judi Rosenthal. Ongoing workshops 

are held every Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 pm in the Arts & 

Crafts room. Bring photographs you like to the orientation session. 

There are no fees for these classes and no previous drawing experience 

is necessary. A supply list will be handed out at orientation however

JEWELRY: The group meets on the first and third Wednesday of the 

month in the Arts & Crafts room at 1:00 p.m. The Beaders are always 

looking for donations of any old beaded necklaces, costume jewelry, and 

any items that could be taken apart and remade into beautiful new jewelry

STAINED GLASS: Open workshop meets every Tuesday morning 9:30

FINE ARTS: The Fine Arts group will not meet in the months of July

Bid Whist 

Fridays, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Anthem Center Game Room 

Bid Whist is a quickly-paced card game; an exciting cross between Spades, 

Hearts, and Bridge where Spades are not always trump. It’s played by four 

people, two sets of partners, using a 52 card deck plus two jokers. 

The history of the game teaches us that it is a version of 

Whist developed by the Sleeping Car Porters and incorporates 

language of travel from the routes covered by the railroad. 

Complete success is called a “running a Boston” which is related 

to the final stop of the train. 

Prospective members are invited to visit and spend an 

evening with us. On-site assistance is available to help newcomers 

and those who want to sharpen their skills. In addition to 

our weekly game sessions, from time-to-time, social functions 

are held. Join us any Friday from 7:00 p.m -10:00 p.m, to meet 

new people, get instruction, or just play the game. 

Dues are only $10.00 a year and members can play as often 

as they care to. For further information, please call Richard

Tournaments: All tournaments held at the Independence 

Center. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. 

Tuesday and Friday at 10:00 a.m. Saturdays

Membership: Dues for the calendar year 

2007 are $10.00 per member. You may pay 

your dues or become a new Billiards Club 

member by contacting any of the flight leaders 

during the scheduled tournaments or by contacting 

any club officer. 

Free Lessons: Members can receive 3 free lessons which are offered by 

calling Garth at 616-7301. 

Skill Level Evaluations: Before competing in tournaments, new members 

are to be evaluated to determine their current skill level and to place

Bocce Ball 

Spring 2007 Playoffs: The spring 2007 season concluded with 

the championship playoffs on Saturday, May 12th. In a tough 

and competitive match the Evergreen Oakers defeated the 

101st. The winning team is made up of Lola Bettridge, Bruce 

Bettridge, Ro Keller, and Jim Hoffman. All members of the 

club salute them on 

their accomplishment. 

They will be back for 

the Fall 2007 season 

and will attempt to 

duplicate the back to 

back championships 

of the Stugots team.

Book Club 

The Book Club meets the third Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in

of movies currently playing or on videotape.

The Ceramics Club held its First On-The-Spot Contest - Painting. 

The club supplied each participant with the bowl, and they used their 

own paints, palettes, paraphernalia, and dug deep into their creative soul 

for what they consider as an artwork worth a blue ribbon. 

Mary Melby won the gold for her delicate rendition of that lovable 

comics goddess and poster girl Betty Boop. Pam Yates received silver for 

her fine-feathered friend the 

cardinal. Winning the bronze is 

the skillful dash of abstract and 

proper use of color gradation by 

Stacy Jacobson.

interested in designing a web site from scratch without new programs. 

Using a basic text editor such as Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac), 

you will design a simple multipage website. In the process, you will learn 

some of the fundamentals of website design. Finally, you will discover how 

to upload your website for others to view. 

This class is for SCA Computer Club members that are comfortable 

working on either a Mac or Windows computer and have some familiarity 

with basic photo editing with a program such as PhotoShop Elements, 

Picassa, or iPhoto.

Lifelong Learning Center 

The Lifelong Learning Center is a chartered club dedicated to 

the pursuit of knowledge through formal and informal lectures, 

directed discussions, debates, and mini-courses. Learning 

Center members are admitted without charge; non-members 

pay $1.00. All programs are presented in the Anthem Center, 

usually in the Delaware Room.

would not have a talk on July 4, and so we will only have

Wednesday, July 11, 10:00 a.m., Ken Rosenberg, SCA resident 

and board member of the Lifelong Learning Center, will 

present “A Cultural Look on the War of Terror.” Ken worked 

for the State Department for over 40 years in over 70 countries. 

This is his fourth presentation in the Lifelong Learning Center. 

He is a knowledgeable and interesting speaker; his last presentation 

was on overseas intelligence gathering.

Tuesday, July 17, 10:00 a.m. Davida Noyek Handler, SCA 

resident, will present “George Gershwin: His Life and His 

Work.” Davida is a SCA resident and has studied classical 

music, Jewish history and geneology. Her special interest is 

exploring music among different cultures. She has a degree in 

music from Trinity College, Dublin. This will be Davida’s third 

talk in the Lifelong Learning Center. 

Monday, July 23, 7:00 p.m., Chris Bell, will present “A View 

of America by an Englishman.” Chris has lived in Las Vegas for 

2 years, his wife is American, and he lived much of his life in 

London. His father was in the British navy and he traveled to 

many places. He has worked with internet websites, and he has 

given this talk several times. He comes recommended as an 

interesting and thoughtful speaker.

The Minuteman Golf Tournament was a success. Thanks to 

the sponsors, Troon Staff, and all who organized and participated 

for the benefit of those in need in our Anthem

May 23: We hosted Siena in our second annual Ryder Cup 

Match. Co-Chair Gary Duffel and Bob Johnson did a fantastic 

job of organization and coordination. In spirited competition, 

Siena prevailed 241/2 to 231/2 to retain the cup. We 

have a fair and objective way to select our team. Remember, 

the keys to selection are participation and performance on 

Men’s Day Wednesday. Play often, play well - this Ryder Cup 

event has a bright, competitive future. 

Upcoming Events: We have a full slate in July including a 

Modified Stableford and individual play as well as the popular 

cha-cha-cha. Sign up at the pro shop in advance to assure a place 

in the field.

Bird Chatter – Birds are extremely sensitive 

to strong cleaning solutions, disinfectants, 

and cleansers. Move your bird to 

another enclosed room if using these 

items. Keep your bird safe from harmful 

bacteria by washing the cage and toys in 

hot soapy water. Discard any perch or toy 

that does not come clean, is frayed, or broken. 

Rinse and dry the items thoroughly 

before returning them to the bird’s cage.

and asphalt can be roasting under the afternoon sun – hot enough 

to burn your pets’ paws. It’s best to walk the dog or cat early in the 

morning or late at night, when the temperature is not as high and the 

concrete has had a chance to cool down. On a hot day, restrict exercise 

and don’t take your dog jogging with you. Too much exercise when the 

weather is very hot can be dangerous for your pet. If you have a pool, 

train your pet to know how to get out if they should accidentally fall in. 

Reminder: Everyone is urged to have their pets micro-chipped; and 

make sure pets are wearing collars and tags. It is also important to register 

your pet with SCA Security, as this will help reunite lost pets with

Performing Arts Club 

Third Thursday Readers Theatre Showcase began on June 21 and will 

continue on the third Thursday of every month from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 

p.m. in the Arlington Room of Anthem Center. All residents are invited 

to be entertained, enthralled and enchanted by the talented members of 

this unique group. 

Auditions! Auditions! Auditions! for the new musical play, “Clara’s 

Colored Lights” will be held in Freedom Hall on Monday, July 23, 

Tuesday, July 24 and Saturday, July 28 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Call

information. Auditions are open to all residents. We are seeking actors 

who can move to music, actors able to do solos, and actors who can sing 

and dance. Some parts have no lines, but actors will be part of ensemble

Freedom Hall. 

Afternoon Karaoke is Wednesday, July 11 in Freedom Hall from 3:00 

p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Karaoke on the North Lawn will be on 

Wednesday, July 25 from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. All residents are invited

Poker 

The second poker tournament for 2007 was held on June 16. 

We had 81 players, including 21new members to the Club. First 

place: Joel Glabman, $486; second place: Art Provencio; third 

place: Robert Royer; fourth place: Sarge Washington; fifth place: 

Len Chapman; sixth place: Darryl Fried; seventh place Richard 

Fillman; eigth place Patricia Hoffman. The prize pool was

The RV Club will not have monthly meetings or organized rallies 

during the months of June, July and August. We will 

resume our monthly travels together in September, with a trip

Scrabble Plus members meet weekly on

can be made to include a player in one or two games if they wish. 

Members participate in regular competitions with 3 or 4 members 

at a table. In addition, tournament style Round Robin play 

with one on one Scrabble play for two players is also available regularly 

and on the second Friday of the month. Additional games 

are often played on Saturdays, Sundays, or other weekdays in the 

Gallery as arranged by members. Our club title, Scrabble Plus, 

indicates that we have other word games available in addition to 

Scrabble. We welcome new members who wish to play other

Crafts Expo on November 3 and at the Holiday Fair on December 8.

Singles 

The Single’s Club held their Semi Annual Meeting and Chili 

Cook-off in the courtyard of Independence Center. This activity 

replaced the annual picnic. Eighty five members participated, tasted 

chili, enjoyed refreshments provided by Pour for You, ate chicken provided 

by the Club and fabulous salads and desserts provided by the 

members, and listened to the song styling of Doug Roll. Eight members 

participated in the Chili Cook-Off and received Green Valley 

movie tickets for entering. Pictured is Gail Weiss, the Social Chair 

who planned the event and won first prize with her White Chili with 

Chicken. Runner up (for the second year in a row) was Theirrien 

Clark, Past President. First prize was a $25.00 gift certificate to 

Buckmans and second prize was a $15.00 gift certificate. This is an 

annual event and all Single’s who reside in Sun City Anthem are invited

Singles Continued 

Also in June members attended Clint Holmes show “Just 

Another Man” at the UNLV Performing Art’s Center and Fine 

Dining at Table 34. The new Bowling SIG met at South Point 

Bowling Center on June 6. June 13-15 members joined others 

touring with &Away We Go to travel to Mesquite and Tuacahn 

to My Fair Lady and Cinderella. There are now four cooking 

SIGs that meet monthly and two Game STG’s that meet in 

member’s homes on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays plus many other 

Shared Interest Groups that single residents can participate in 

after joining the Single’s Club. 

The Single’s Club invites all unmarried residents of Sun 

City Anthem to join their club. The Club meets for Tee Time 

on the first Friday of the month at Buckmans and on the 

third Friday at the Trumpets Gallery. Tee Times are from 5:00 

p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Single residents are invited to the monthly 

Board meeting held at 4:30 p.m. in the Penn Room of 

Independence Center to learn more about the Club. Annual 

dues are $10.00 and entitle the members to attend all Club 

functions. After joining the club members can sign up for 

activities and Shared Interest Groups. There is an “Unofficial 

Monday Lunch Bunch” where attendees choose the following 

Monday’s restaurant and many gather for breakfast on 

Wednesday morning. There are pot lucks at various members’ 

homes on most Sundays.

Softball 

Did you know that Mr. Del Webb was an avid baseball 

player and part owner of the New York Yankees. We all know 

he was an icon in the construction business but did you know 

he was responsible in the construction of several sport stadiums. 

He is not responsible directly in the construction of our 

beautiful softball fields (Anthem Hills Park) but the City of 

Henderson built them for the residents of Sun City Anthem. 

Join us for year around softball every Tuesday and Friday 

morning (summer schedule 7:30 a.m.) and a yearly fee of

Anthem residents of all abilities are welcome to join the 

Table Tennis Club. Club members have access to a table tennis 

ball machine (robot) that can help players improve their skills 

and work on a multitude of different strokes at different 

speeds. Free clinics are held every first and third Monday 

evening. Also, instructional DVDs are available to Club members 

in good standing. Yearly dues are only $5. 

Table Tennis began in England during the 1880s. Today 

throughout the world, people play table tennis for exercise, 

recreation and social interaction. As a non-contact sport, using 

a ball that weighs only a few grams, table tennis is practically a 

risk-free sport. Players can realize a number of physical benefits 

from table tennis including improved hand-eye coordination 

and reactions. Over time studies have shown that both gross 

and fine muscle movements can be improved. Over the course 

of play, a fair, yet not extreme, amount of aerobic activity 

occurs. Players can set their own level of involvement. 

A recent book entitled, “Making a Good Brain Great” by 

Dr. Daniel Amen names table tennis the number one sport for 

improving your brain. 

Nineteen million Americans participate in table tennis each 

year. Table Tennis is the most popular racket sport in the world 

and became an Olympic sport in 1988.

Tennis 

Look on the Tennis Club bulletin board at the tennis courts or in your 

email for club event details. Our club time is from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 

a.m. year-round for 5 days each week Tuesday through Saturday on 6 of 

8 courts (courts #1 and #2 are open to all residents). Members can 

enjoy playing either doubles or singles. All courts are subject to a signin 

procedure during the busy morning hours to ensure fair court usage 

when people are waiting. Note: Wednesday club time is designated as 

Ladies Round-Robin Day when ladies can meet for round-robin play. 

During non-club time, the tennis courts are for the use of all SCA residents 

and their guests and the guest policy requires that residents must 

accompany their guests and guests must be at least 14 years old.

Travel 

The Travel Club will not be having formal meetings during July and 

August. However, we anticipate having a social event during this period.

for trips that have come to our attention. Bob and Diane Collins 

are hosting a 10 night cruise to the Mexican Riviera and Sea of Cortez 

during February 2008. Also, some members are taking hosted bus trips 

to various locations within the Southwest. Our meetings include an 

opportunity for members to talk about trips that they have recently

Women’s Golf 

August is a great time to come out and enjoy the low, low 

rates and wide open fairways.. Play early and often, but be sure 

to take plenty of water. Revere provides bottled water for all 

golfers; pick some up before you hit the first tee. Try freezing 

a wet cloth in a plastic bag the night before you play. It provides 

cool relief for the face and neck as the day goes on. 

August Ladies Days start with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun. Please 

note: We play on Monday on August 6th then Tuesday, on 

8/14 and 8/21. Tuesday, August 28 is the first Revere 

Invitational open to all players. The cost is $75 per person and 

the format will be 1-2-3 Jokers Wild. It is a fun day with a 

great lunch at Buckman’s and lots of raffle prizes. Pick up an 

application in the Club House!
