Selection Criteria
This section provides a number of
guidelines intended to aid you in
selecting the Optical Table Top best
suited to your particular applications.
Since the sizes of Table Tops will usually
be dictated by the experiments planned,
we will restrict discussion to their
thickness and the thick ness of their top
plates. Table Top length/thickness ratios
of roughly 10:1 are normally regarded as
ideal choices, since they yield rigidities
adequate for typical experimental setups.
In specific cases involving ultrasensitive
experimental setups, such as those used
in interfero metry or holography, this
ratio should be reduced to as little as 7:1,
and Table Top thickness should be at
least 200 mm.
Table Top plate thickness should also be
chosen to suit the types of experiments
planned.
Table Tops of both series have grids of
our patented Clean-Top sealed tapped
holes, and may be equipped with our
Laserport option, a section of 47.6 mm
i.d. steel tubing inserted into a throughhole
cut into their struc tures, interconnecting
their top and bottom plates. This
is normally centered on the longitudinal
axis, 150 mm distant from the shorter
edge. Used in combination with our
Lasershelf option, Laserport allows
space-saving mounting of laser sources
beneath Table Tops (see section Accessories
Optical Tables for further information
on our Lasershelf option).
Due to their rugged construction, our
Optical Table Tops are likely to remain in
service for many years. Long-range
planning and potential future applications
should be taken into account in the
selection process. This will ensure that
the rigid Table Top for tackling future
tasks will already be on hand.
