Optical Tables, Introduction
Demands on the precision and resolutions
of metrologi cal equipment and
techniques have become more stringent
in pace with technological advances.
Metrological set ups and systems have
thus become more sensitive to external
influences, such as temperature variations
and vibrations.
Thermal effects may usually be minimized
by thermo stat ting, use of
temperature-compensated hardware and
supporting structures, shortening the
duration of mea sure ment, and other
relatively straightforward means. Special
equipment is available for minimizing
effects due to vibrations, but the full
benefits provided by such equipment will
be obtained only if all of the following
requirements are met:
••
All components of metrological setups or
systems must be sufficiently rigidly aligned
with respect to one another. This
requirement may be met by mounting all
such components on a single, extremely
stiff, base. Optical Table Tops are used for
this purpose.•
••
The entire complex, consisting of the experimental
setup itself plus its supporting
base, must be mounted on vibrationisolators.
Special supports equipped with
various types of vibration-isolation systems
are used for this purpose.
Compliance (mm/N)
Frequency (Hz)
Optical Table Tops
Optical Table Tops must be designed to
provide high structural stiffness if
relative motions of components mounted
on them due to external vibrations are to
be minimized. In addition, any vibrations
reaching Table Tops, in spite of the
vibration-isolation systems incorpo rated
into their supports, must be rapidly
damped out; i.e., Optical Table Tops must
have highly effective internal damping
mechanisms.
Optical Table Tops may thus be classified
in terms of their structural rigidities and
their internal damping cha rac teristics.
Their structural rigidities should be
assessed in terms of both their static
stiffness and their dynamic rigidities, i.e.,
their resistance to deformations due to
dynamic applied loads.
••
Their static stiffnesses are equivalent to
their Young‘s moduli, and are thus the
ratio of their bending deflec•tions to the
magnitudes of the temporally constant
(static), concentrated, applied loads
causing these deflections.•
••
Their dynamic rigidities, on the other
hand, express their Young‘s moduli as
functions of the frequencies of temporally
varying, i.e., dynamic, applied loads, such
as vibrations, inducing bending deflections
of their structures.•
The frequency responses of Table Tops
may be graphi cally represented in the
form of so-called „compliance“ curves,
defined as the reciprocals of their
dynamic rigi di ties, versus the frequencies
of periodically varying applied loads,
covering the full ranges of frequencies
likely to be of interest.
An analysis of the compliance curves of
Optical Table Tops indicates that they
may be roughly regarded as ideal rigid
bodies up to frequencies of about 80 Hz.
At higher frequencies, however, Optical
Table Tops exhibit resonances, evident by
occurrence of peaks in their compliance
curves. Compliance curves are a useful
aid in assessing the dynamic rigidities of
Optical Table Tops at various excitation
frequencies. They may also be used to
compare the frequency responses of
unloaded Table Tops of equal weight and
equal dimensions.
Since the amplitudes of vibrational
resonances of rec tang ular Table Tops are
greatest at their corners, corner-compliance
curves, or plots of their compliances
at their corners versus the frequencies of
dynamic applied loads, represent
quantitative indicators of table-top
per formance. The widths of resonance
peaks occurring in their corner-compliance
curves are indicative of the
effec tiveness of their internal damping
mechanisms.
In concluding our brief discussion of
these topics, we should emphasize that
the factors mentioned above refer to the
performance of unloaded Table Tops, i.e.,
to Table Tops with no components
mounted on them. These factors alone
are thus inadequate to fully describe
their performance under conditions of
actual use. Since the static loads, and
probably the dynamic loads as well,
exerted on Optical Table Tops by
experimen tal setups will vary from case
to case, purely qualitative design factors,
particularly specifications relating to
their honeycomb core mass density,
should also be taken into account in
selecting Optical Table Tops. The
material(s) used in fabricating their
honeycomb cores, core thickness, plus
specifications relating to their top and
bottom plates and their sidewalls,
constitute further major selection
criteria. Any design features or mechanisms
that have been incorporated in order
to improve their internal damping
characteristics should also be taken into
account.
Details of the special design features of
LINOS Photonics Optical Table Tops are
covered in the subsection entitled
„Design Features“.
Vibration-Isolation Systems
The choice of supports and vibrationisolation
systems will have a significant
affect on the performance of Optical
Table systems.
The purpose of vibration-isolation
systems is isolating, to the maximum
extent feasible, Table Tops from vibrations
emanating from, or transmitted by,
the floors or other surfaces on which
their supports stand. The fre quen cies of
these vibrations usually range from
about 2 Hz up to 50 Hz, depending upon
the characteristics and location of the
floors, or other supporting surfaces,
involved, as well as upon ambient
conditions.
Practice indicates that spring-mass
mechanisms are the best choices for such
Transmissibility
applications, but they must be tuned
such that their natural resonant frequencies
fall well below the frequencies of
lowest-order building resonances if they
are to provide high degrees of vibrational
isolation.
The vibrational-transfer characteristics,
or transmissi bili ties, of undamped
spring-mass mechanisms are roughly as
indicated in the graphs shown below,
where ω 0
is their natural resonant
frequency.
In addition to providing isolation from
building vibra tions, vibration-isolation
systems should strongly isolate experimental
setups from incidental vibrations
due to, e.g., persons walking about, etc.,
and should strongly dampen these
Transmissibility
occurences; i.e., they should rapidly
damp vibrations at all frequencies likely
to be encoun tered in actual use. This
may be implemented by incor porating
various types of damping mechanisms,
such as eddy-current damping or
frictional/viscous damping using solid,
liquid, or gaseous materials into
vibration-isolation systems. Damping
reduces the amplitudes of their natural
resonance peaks, but the forces exerted
on them by damping mechanisms
increases their transmissibilities at high
frequencies, as can be seen from the
graph shown below.
Thus, designing vibration-isolation
systems entails arri ving at a compromise
that will provide the lowest resonant
frequencies achievable, combined with
the low est resonance peaks consistent
with strong damping of vibrations over
the entire range of frequencies likely to
be encountered in actual use.
Specially designed vibration-isolation
systems are essential if all of these
requirements are to be met.
Design Features
All of our Optical Tables are laminated
structures con sisting of steel top and
bottom plates bonded under high
pressure, by two lapped granite plates,
to steel-honey comb cores using a special
epoxy resin. Their sidewalls are fabricated
from steel plates, and seam-welded
to other structural elements to form rigid
structural units. All Table Tops are
equipped with specially tuned, inter nally
mounted, damping mechanisms, such as
damping mats laminated onto the inner
surfaces of their sidewalls and damping
masses installed at strategically chosen
internal points. Their broadband
characteristics make them equally
effective at all frequencies.
Our „Clean-Top®“ option seals the
bottoms of tapped holes in Table Tops
with special tubular caps that prevent
liquids that might attack bonding
adhesives from entering the interiors of
Table Tops.
Steel-honeycomb Cores
Our steel-honeycomb cores are fabricated
from 0.25 mm gauge corrosion-resistant
coated sheet steel. The small
diameters of the tubular caps used on
Table Tops equipped with our Clean-Top
option have allowed us to reduce
honeycomb-cell cross-sectional area to 3
cm 2 . The resulting high cell density yields
extremely stiff table-top structures. This
high cell density also provides large
contact areas for bonding top and
bottom plates to honeycomb cores,
making Table Tops even stiffer. Our
honeycomb cores incorporate even
smaller cell cross-sections at strategic
points, which increases their ave rage mass
density to 0.27 g/cm 3 . This type of
honey comb -core design has a shear
modulus of 1.9 x 10 9 N/m 2 .
Top Plates
Top plates are fabricated from coldrolled
ferromagnetic stainless steel, and
directly bonded to honeycomb cores by a
bonding process that leaves them
Q-enabled
Special orders are standard for LINOS!
Steel-honeycomb core
unstressed. Top plates are available in
thicknesses of 3 mm or 5 mm, and are
flat to within ±0.13 mm over the entire
surface. The upper surfaces are ground
to reduce disturbing reflections.
Bottom Plates
Bottom plates are bonded to honeycomb
cores using the same process used for
bonding top plates, and are also left
unstressed. Bottom plates are fabricated
from cold-rolled steel and coated with
black epoxy paint. The unique, direct
core-to-top bonding improves the
thermal conductivity of the core to the
outside environment, reducing the
„thermal relaxation time“ for the top.
Bot tom plates have the same thickness as
top plates.
Optical Tables
Sidewalls
Sidewalls are fabricated from 1.9 mm
gauge cold-rolled steel in order to
provide even greater stiffness, even
better structural integrities, and the
structural uniformity needed to preclude
thermal distortions, even under large
temperature excursions. Sidewalls are
seam-wel ded along all edges, and have
damping mats applied to their inner
surfaces. Their outer surfaces are coated
with fiber-reinforced, grained, vinyl.
Stainless-steel guards protect all corners.
The plastic coatings on their outer
surfaces make sidewalls highly resistant
to dampness and moisture. Sidewall
plates may be drilled and tapped for
attaching various types of hardware.
CleanTop II Equipment
The new CleanTop II Optical Top
equipment is the best method to protect
the honeycomb core from outer flowing
in, e.g. agressive fluids. Its design
involved capa ci tance discharge welding a
25 mm long stainless steel or plated steel
cup under each drilled hole prior to
thread tapping. Cups are epoxy-bonded
and made from nylon-6, and stainless
steel (optional). CleanTop II cups are
small and cylindrical, this allows a high
core density and therefore assures
highest stability of the honeycomb core.
needed for rapid assembly of Optical
experiments. Unlike threaded inserts
or bush ings, tapped holes withstand
both tensile and compres sive loads. The
heavy-gauge, high-strength, stock we
Strong Internal Damping
Table tops exhibit strong internal
damping that both minimizes their
response to external shocks and vibrations
and dissipates the energies of any
activated vibrational modes of their top
plates. The internal dam-ping characteristics
of Table Tops are particularly critical
in cases where they are supported on
vibration-isolation systems.
Many manufacturers use viscoelastic
adhesives to attach top and bottom
plates to honeycomb cores, a practice
that substantially reduces the stiffnesses
of final Table Top structures. All epoxy
resins used by TMC are hard-setting and
supplemented by dam ping masses. This
approach eliminates both aging effect
and outgassing. The damping characteristics
of our Table Tops are individually
tuned to their structural resonan ces.
TMC‘s firm adherence to these design
prin ci ples in manufacturing its Optical
Table Tops results in superior-quality
Table Tops exhibiting stiffness that has
yet to be equalled. Their low compliances,
the recipro cals of their dynamic
rigidities, are readily evident from their
corner-compliance curves.
TMC offers three levels of damping:
Maximum damping:
For holography, interferometry, spectroskopy,
also recommended in particularly
noisy vibration and for puldes lasers.
Dry Damping
The damping of the Optical Table Tops is
based on a system of broadband dry
damping, which damps all existing
resonances. Dry damping is preferable to
oil-based dampers. Oil‘s characteristics
can change over time and hidden oil
reservoirs are always in danger of being
pierced by an end-user customizing his
system.
An Optical Top‘s resonant frequency will
vary based on load, distribution of load,
temperature, and even the presence of
the dampers themselves. Therefore, in
practice, it is difficult to tune the
dampers to the top‘s resonance. The
broadband damping technique is
therefore the most effective way to
damp an Optical Top.
Standard damping:
For less sensitive applications. This
broadband damping level provides a top
with performance characteristics that
exceed the majority of other manufacturers‘
highest performance levels.
Nominal damping:
For general lab work when the main
consideration is a rigid, flat mounting
surface.
Frequency (Hz) Frequency (Hz) Frequency (Hz)
We present below the corner-compliance curves for the three damping levels. In this example a table with the dimensions 1200x2400x300 mm is used. To convert from in/lb
to mm/N multiply by a factor of 5.7. Example: 10 -6 in/lb x 5.7 = 5.7 x 10 -6 mm/N.
Selection Criteria
This section provides a number of
guidelines intended to aid you in
selecting the Optical Table Top best
suited to your particular applications.
Since the sizes of Table Tops will usually
be dictated by the experiments planned,
we will restrict discussion to their
thickness and the thick ness of their top
plates. Table Top length/thickness ratios
of roughly 10:1 are normally regarded as
ideal choices, since they yield rigidities
adequate for typical experimental setups.
In specific cases involving ultrasensitive
experimental setups, such as those used
in interfero metry or holography, this
ratio should be reduced to as little as 7:1,
and Table Top thickness should be at
least 200 mm.
Table Top plate thickness should also be
chosen to suit the types of experiments
planned.
Table Tops of both series have grids of
our patented Clean-Top sealed tapped
holes, and may be equipped with our
Laserport option, a section of 47.6 mm
i.d. steel tubing inserted into a throughhole
cut into their struc tures, interconnecting
their top and bottom plates. This
is normally centered on the longitudinal
axis, 150 mm distant from the shorter
edge. Used in combination with our
Lasershelf option, Laserport allows
space-saving mounting of laser sources
beneath Table Tops (see section Accessories
Optical Tables for further information
on our Lasershelf option).
Due to their rugged construction, our
Optical Table Tops are likely to remain in
service for many years. Long-range
planning and potential future applications
should be taken into account in the
selection process. This will ensure that
the rigid Table Top for tackling future
tasks will already be on hand.
Best Reasons for Choosing a TMC / LINOS Product
LINOS and TMC are your ideal partners
for vibration isolation solutions. For over
30 years, TMC has specialized in providing
precision working surfaces and
vibration isolation systems for precision
measurement laboratories and industry.
Quality Feature 1
The sidewalls in all Table Tops and
Breadboards from LINOS and TMC
are made of 2 mm thick, damped,
cold-rolled steel profile. The inexpensive
sidewalls made of chipboard
in a competitor product
can absorb moisture, which
causes the material to swell. Furthermore,
they do not ensure unimpeded
heat transfer.
TMC
Quality Feature 3
Competitive construction
To provide optimal performance, both
precision “tops” and their supporting
isolators must be designed to address the
central issue: control of environmental
noise.
Quality Feature 2
Table Tops in CleanTop®II design feature top and bottom plates bonded
directly to the steel honeycomb core. When a plastic insert is used
to seal the tapped holes, the insert and its additional adhesive joints
weaken the overall structure considerably. Furthermore the plastic layer,
like the wood sidewalls, obstructs the transfer of heat through the
plate. If one side is heated, massive warping can result (bimetal effect).
The patented CleanTop®II design with its slender, cylindrical protective
caps enables a more closely-meshed honeycomb core structure than a
conical cap form permits. The honeycomb cells average approximately
3 cm 2 , making them 50 % smaller than those in the competitor product.
This ensures higher rigidity and heavier dead weight.
TMC
Please find enclosed our arguments for
choosing the optimum solution for your
vibration isolation task.
Competitive construction
Quality Feature 4
The honeycomb core is bonded
to the top and bottom plates
with epoxy resin and the Table
Top is pressed between two highprecision,
lapped granite slabs
until the adhesive has set.
The CleanTop®II design also guarantees a maximum thread engagement
depth of 25 mm. Even a slight misalignment of the plastic insert
reduces the thread engagement depth significantly, and in extreme
cases can damage the sidewall.
TMC
Competitive construction
This procedure precludes the
need for post-processing steps
such as polishing, and guarantees
an unparalleled planarity of
better than ± 0.13 over the entire
table surface. The competition
cannot guarantee this planarity
over a surface greater than
600 mm 2 .
Quality Feature 5
Quality Feature 6
Each individual thread is cut with
a precision tool and has a clean
bevel (countersink). Unbeveled
threads present a higher risk of
injury and can cause unevenness.
The corners of LINOS and TMC
Breadboards and Table Tops have
a radius of 25 mm. This helps to
prevent painful impacts and injuries.
Quality Feature 7
The resonance frequency of a Table Top is dependent on
load, distribution of load, temperature and position of the
dampers. With so many influencing factors, it is difficult to
determine the exact frequency of the resonance location.
That is why LINOS and TMC rely on broadband dry damping,
to dampen even the higher-frequency resonances that can
cause torsional vibration and other unwanted effects. Narrow-band
tuned dampers cannot deliver this level of performance
.
Breadboard Leveler
Optical Tables
As an option on Breadboards of the 77
and 78 Series with 50 mm thickness
LINOS provides a Breadboard Leveler.
The leveler consists of a threaded sleeve
bonded into the top, a bushing leveler,
and a locknut. An M6 or 1/4 - 20 bolt
may then be used to fasten theBreadboard
to another top. The leveler is
adjusted and locked with a simple Allen
wrench.
To order the Breadboard Leveler attach
the required number of levelers to the
Part No. of the Breadboard.
Example: 4 levelers are needed together
with Breadboard Part No. G43 7811 912,
the new Part No. is G43 78119 124.
CleanTop II Optical Tops, 783 Series, Standard Damping
We offer the Optical Tops, 783 Series
witha 5 mm thick top skin out of
The Table Tops are available in a full
range of sizes and have the standard dry
damping level. CleanTop II exceeds all
current industry standards for structural
stiffness and damping. The Table Tops
783 Series are an economical alternative
for less sensitive applications.
ClassOne CleanTop II Optical Tops, 793 Series, Standard
Damping
The ClassOne CleanTop Optical Top
design is an extension of the original
CleanTop, adapted for clean room
applications. Stainless steel CleanTop II
cups maximize cleanliness as well as
standup to the most corrosive spills.
The Table Tops are available with a 5 mm
thick top skin and have the standard dry
damping level. They exceed all current
industry cleanliness standards. Stainless
steel sidewalls, stainless steel underside,
wipe-down with lint-free cloth, and
cleanroom packaging contribute to
qualify the top as Class 100 cleanroom
compatible.
Recommended for all cleanroom
applications and when extremely
corrosive liquids may be spilledrepeatedly
on the surface.
Non-Magnetic CleanTop II Optical Tops, 714 Series,
Maximum Damping
CleanTop II Optical Table is nowavailable
in a ”non-magnetic”construction. They
offer the sameequipment as the 784
Series and have themaximum dry
damping level.
Though no alloy of stainless steel can be
said to be 100 % non-magnetic, the
lower carbon content of the 300 Series
alloys offer a dramatic reduction in
ferromagnetic properties. Aluminum
tops are not recommended due to their
poor structural properties.
The non-magnetic Table Tops are
recommended for all applications
requiring the support of a high-strength
magnet or the maintenance of a
homogenous magnetic field.
Support Systems, Introduction
Providing both vertical and horizontal
vibrational isolation
The performance of Optical Tables is
determined by the performance
characteristics of both their top structures
and their supports, where the
degree of vibrational isolation and the
damping actions provided by the latter
are the major determining factors. High
degrees of vibrational isolation hinder
transmission of building vibrations
through table supports to their top
structures. Strong damping actions
rapidly damp out vibrations of Table Top
structures. Truly effective vibration-isolation
systems must provide both high
degrees of vibrational isolation and
strong damping actions in both vertical
and horizontal planes.
Isolating Optical Table Tops from floor
vibrations is a complex problem, since
the directions and amplitudes of floor
vibrations vary with location throughout
buil-dings. On lower floors, they will be
predominantly in the vertical plane. On
upper floors, the amplitudes of floor
vibrations in the horizontal plane
become progres sively worse from floor
to floor.
One figure of merit used in assessing the
effectiveness of damping mechanisms is
their resonant frequency. „Stiffer“
damping mechanisms have higher
resonant fre quencies. Damping mechanisms
damp vibrations star ting at a
frequency 1.4 times their resonant
frequency.
LINOS Photonics and TMC have taken
this into account in desig ning its Optical
Table support systems, and can thus offer
its customers the following unique
combination of benefits:
Design Features
Table supporting structures consist of a
number of posts, either free-standing or
interconnected by tie-bars, and with or
without vibration-isolation mechanisms
incorporated in their columnar sections.
The types of vibration-isolation systems
required to afford Table Tops adequate
vibrational isolation will depend upon
the experiments planned and ambient
conditions at intended installation sites.
Four different types of support systems
are available
••
Without isolation system (rigid
levelling stand)
••
Passive isolators S
••
Semi-active Gimbal Piston isolation
system
In addition to their outstanding performance,
TMC‘s support systems provide
users the further benefit of modularity.
Any of our vibration-isolation systems
may be readily replaced by, or converted
into, any of the others whenever
required by, e.g., more stringent
demands on the accuracies of experimental
results. Options, such as casters, may
be field-retrofitted whenever needed.
High Quality
Selection
The information needed for selecting
suitable supporting structures are their
load-bearing capacity and the desired
working-surface height. The load
capacity is the addition of the weight of
the table and the maximum total weight
to be carried by the Table Top multiplied
with savety factor 2. Select the post size
that provides the working height you
need, taking into account the table
thickness (has to be substracted).
Ergonomic convention would dictate
910 mm from floor to Table Top surface.
Rigid Stands
Rigid stands provide no vibrational
isolation. Table tops rest on supports
whose heights may be adjusted over a
75 mm range, extending from 25 mm
below their nominal heights, to 50 mm
above their nominal heights.
Rigid stands will be adequate for
supporting relatively simple experimental
setups that are insensitive to vibrations.
Rigid stands are the preferred
choice for our thinner (50 mm or 100 mm
top thickness) Series 77 Optical Tables.
The special modular design of LINOS and TMC support systems offers
the following advantages:
• Modular construction
• Choice of several damping factors
• Field retrofittability
• Optional struts or footplates
• Excellent vibrational isolation in both vertical and horizontal planes
• Available with/without casters
• Choice of several load-bearing capacities
• Choice of working heights
• Custom and OEM support systems
Retrofits and upgrades can be carried out quickly and easily, because
the standard support systems come equipped with all required bore
holes and threads.
Operating pressure: S 50 and S 150
max. 5x10 5 Pa
S 300 max. 6x10 5 Pa
The pressure chambers of our S-Series
vibration-isola tors are fabricated from an
elastomer material reinforced with steel
rings. Their well-balanced behavi ours in
both vertical and hori zontal planes allow
suppor ted loads to simply sink down
onto their elastomer pressure cham bers
without damaging them in the event of
overloading or pressure loss.
The graph above presents a typical
frequency response curve for an S-Series
vibration isolator. This exhibits a
pronounced resonance peak, reaching a
normalized response of 8 at 3 Hz. It
should be noted that since their natural
resonant frequencies are load-dependent,
the curve shown above will not be
entirely accurate in all cases. However, it
can be stated that these units exhibit
excellent vibration-isolation and
damping characteristics at frequencies
exceeding 5 Hz for loads falling within
their specified load ranges.
These types of vibration isolators are
recommended for supporting less
vibration-sensitive experimental setups
under moderately favorable ambient
conditions, such as those typically
encountered in ground floor laboratories
in buildings housing no vibrating
machinery.
Their use should be primarily restricted
to supporting experimental setups whose
total weights will remain roughly
constant, so that their compressed
heights will not require frequent
readjustment. They are typically used to
support medium-sized Series 77 Optical
Table Tops having a thickness of roughly
100 mm to 200 mm.
S-Series vibration isolators are available
in three models covering three overlapping
load ranges. Dimensional data on
all three appears on section Accessories.
Vibration Isolation System
Gimbal Piston TM
Depending on the location and surrounding
environ•ment of a room in which a work
area is situated, vertical and horizontal
floor vibration may occur. This vibration is
between 2 and 50 Hz and has amplitudes
in the micrometer range. Typical sources of
this interference are vibrations in buildings
and randomly occurring interference, such
as impact sound waves caused by people
walking down a corridor and traffic noise.
This vibration negatively affects work
conditions and results to a considerable
degree. To prevent most of this vibration
from being transferred to a work surface,
a vibration isolation system must be used.
The Gimbal Piston vibration isolation system
ensures reliable protection against vertical
and horizontal floor vibration, even in highly
sensitive applications.
A criterion for assessing the quality of a
damping system is its resonant frequency.
This frequency depends on the load of a
system and on the amplitude of the vibration
or oscillation causing resonance. Vibration
is only ab•sorbed at frequencies that are 1.4
times higher than the resonant frequency. As
a result, the resonant frequency must be kept
as low as possible.
This is exactly where the patented Gimbal
Piston system stands out from other vibration
isolation systems. The Gimbal Piston features
extremely low resonant frequency even in the
critical range of very low amplitudes.
At excitation amplitudes of 0.1 mm, the
resonant fre•quen•cy is 1.5 Hz in the vertical
and 1.7 Hz in the horizontal direction. For
amplitudes of 1 mm, this frequency is 1.0 Hz
in the vertical and 1.2 Hz in the horizontal
direction. At an excitation frequency of
just 5 Hz, the Gimbal Piston’s isolation
efficiency is 95% in the vertical and 80% in
the horizontal direction. An integrated level
controller ensures automatic return to the
original position as the load applied to a work
surface changes. This repositioning accuracy
is ±1 mm and can be increased to ±0.1 mm
by using precision valves.
The Gimbal Piston isolation system works
using air only. Since it does not require any
hydraulic damping or absorption media,
it is ideal for use in clean rooms, ensuring
maintenance-free operation with consistent
technical specifications over many years.
Vibrational isolation is provided by a
gimbal-piston assem bly, free to move in
an upper air chamber, or com pres sion
chamber, sealed by a 0.5 mm thick,
Dacron -reinforced, bellows that excludes
ambient air. A suppor ting rod welded
onto the underside of the unit‘s moun ting
plate is bolted to the piston‘s flexible
base plate. The compression chamber is
pneumatically inter connected to a second
chamber, a so-called „damping“ chamber,
via a calibrated orifice. When these units
are used, Table Tops are supported on air
cushions consti tu ting extrem ely „weak“
springs of a spring-mass system.
These types of table systems have
extremely low reso nant frequencies, due
to the low restoring forces of their
supports and the high weights of their
tops. The bellows used for sealing add no
stiffness to support units, since they are
rather thin, and thus highly flexible.
Horizontal displacements of Table Tops
are transmitted via supporting rods,
producing lateral motions of flexible
piston baseplates. This causes pistons to
execute vertical tilting motions about
points lying roughly in the planes of their
sealing bellows. The lengths of pistons
and supporting rods have been chosen to
optimize the resonant frequencies of
these motions. Horizontal dis place ments
of Table Tops thus also cause air to flow
back and forth between compression and
damping chambers, thereby damping any
lateral motions of Table Tops.
The lowest resonant frequencies achievable
with these vibration isolators range
from 1.5 Hz to 1.7 Hz in both vertical and
horizontal planes, and vary with the loads
supported. The following graphs present
typical vibra tion -transmission and
transmissibility curves for our Gimbal
Piston vibration-isolators.
Gimbal Piston systems effectively damp
vibrational motions in both vertical and
horizontal planes over the entire critical
range, which extends from 2 Hz to 50 Hz.
This superior performance makes these
systems suitable for supporting experimental
setups, such as those used in
interferometry and holography, that are
highly sensitive to vibrations.
The excellent vibrational isolation they
provide in both vertical and horizontal
planes isolate experimental setups even
from the large-amplitude floor vibrations
typcially encountered on the upper floors
of tall buil dings. They should thus be used
in all applications ad versely affected by
floor vibrations and/or subject to critical
constraints on their ambient acoustic
environ ments.
If a Table Top supported on these units is
vertically displaced, the resulting motions
of their pistons will alter the volumes of
their compression chambers, thereby
altering chamber pressures. This is what
provides the desired cushioning effect.
Since air may enter or exit compression
chambers through calibrated orifices in
the walls separating them from damping
chambers, air will flow back and forth
through these orifices as com pres sion
chamber volumes vary, damping the
motions of the mounting plates on which
the Table Top rests.
With high-precision valves, the resetting
accuracy can be increased
to ±0.1 mm. The quick response of
the valves prevents build-up in
structures with a center of gravity
Series 794 and 793 Table Tops, as well as support systems made of electropolished
stainless steel, are available for use in cleanrooms (Class
1000). The outlets of the level adjustment valve are fitted with hose connectors,
so the compressed air emitted can be conducted out of the
cleanroom through a hose.
The 714 Series antimagnetic Table Tops are also available with support
systems made of 100% antimagnetic steel. For applications with extremely
strong magnetic fields, antimagnetic regulator valves are also available.
Free-Standing Individual Posts
Free-standing posts are a convenient
alternative to posts with tiebars when
open access between the posts is
necessary. Though generally configured
in sets of 4 and 6 legs, otherconfigurations
include 3 and 5 legs.
The independent posts offer the
maximum flexibility in post positioning
with respect to the Optical Top.
Free-standing posts are especially
convenient for supporting large coupled
table systems. All free-standing posts
have an oversized 350 x 350 mm steel
base-plate for maximum stability.
STACIS® 2100
Active Piezoelectric Vibration
Cancellation System
More and more that is equipment
sensitive to vibration, such as scanning
electron microscopes, requires high vibration
isolation, particularly when it comes
to low-frequency interference below
2 Hz. For this equipment, pneumatic
isolators are inadequate. As a result,
LINOS and TMC offer the STACIS®2100
active vibration cancellation system to
meet the requirements of this equipment.
Typical applications include the following:
••
Coordinate measuring machines
••
Holography
••
Interferometry
••
Scanning electron microscopy
••
Scanning probe microscopy
••
Wafer Stepper
Featuring active isolation ranging from
0.6 to 250 Hz, STACIS® 2100 provides the
widest band of vibration isolation
available on the market. Thanks to its
compact design, it can be used anywhere
sensitive machines or equipment
assemblies have to be isolated from
building vibration or the impact sound of
people walking by. Within an industrial
manufacturing site, this equipment can
be, for example, wafer steppers or wafer
inspection systems, and in the research
field, interferometers or complete
Optical Table systems.
The STACIS®2100 system is a combination
of active and passive vibration
isolators. In the lower frequency range of
0.6 to 250 Hz, five piezoelectric actuators
per isolator provide for vibration
isolation in all six degrees of freedom.
Disturbances in the upper frequency
range above 250 Hz are dampened by a
passive elastomer isolator. At the core of
the system is a controller that processes
the interference signals detected by the
absolute velocity sensors integrated into
the isolator housings. The controller
sends control signals to the piezoelectric
actuators independently from one
another, causing them to expand or
contract as needed so that they move
out of the way of vibration, thus
diminishing its impact.
STACIS®2100 below the final chamber of the
prototype of the LIGO interferometer at the
California Institute of Technology, the most precise
measuring instrument ever built. Its resolution is
better than 10 -18 m.
STACIS®2100 is ideal for use in tough
environments, such as in clean rooms or
near strong magnetic fields. In addition,
this system is simple to install and easy to
use.
Hybrid Piezoelectric/Air Active Vibration
Cancellation System
STACIS®iX is a new active vibration isolation
system specially developed by TMC
for Optical Tables. The system features
excellent vibration isolation properties
both in the low-frequency range, below
10 Hz, and in the high-frequency range,
above 10 Hz.
Optical tables are typically equipped
with low-frequency, pneumatic isolation
systems that have a resonance frequency
range around 1.5 Hz. These systems
suppress higher frequencies quite
effectively. In the crucial frequency range
of building vibrations, however, from
1 Hz to 3 Hz, vibrations that come up
through the floor are enhanced. In other
words, in this frequency range the typical
system is actually worse than having a
support system with no vibration
isolation.
For cases such as these, the STACIS®iX
from TMC is the ideal solution. This
patented system comprises a serial
connection of a passive air-isolated
system from the MaxDampAir®series
with an active piezoelectric-electrical
isolation system based on the time-tested
STACIS®technology. The STACIS®system
is equipped with special vibration sensors
that detect low-frequency vibra tion and
neutralize it using piezoelectric
actuators. In addition, the STACIS®iX
system extends the stroke of the piezo
actuator from 15 μm to 60 μm. This
ensures that even large-amplitude vibrations,
as occur particularly in tall buildings,
can effectively be eliminated. The
transfer function of the overall system is
equal to the sum of transfer functions of
the two individual systems.
LaserTable Base
The series of vibration isolation systems
for optical benches has now been
expanded by the addition of the Laser
Table Baseseries, designed on the
technological basis of the STACIS®iX
technology.
Low-frequency vibrations, beginning
below the 1 Hz level, are damped directly
on the floor by the active piezo electric
isolation system. The passive air-isolated
vibration isolation system from the
MaxDampAir® series is positioned at the
upper end of the support system. The
support system itself is the standard TMC
system with tiebars. Thanks to its
modular design, the overall setup can
easily be modified to suit individual
application requirements. Moreover,
existing passive systems can be retrofitted
with the STACIS®system without
having to remove the optical and mechanical
systems already mounted on the
tabletop. Figure 2 shows the horizontal
and vertical transfer functions of the
individual systems, as well as the total
transfer function of the LaserTable
Basesystem.
Laboratory Tables (Workstations), Introduction
A steadily growing number of workplaces
in science and industry are faced
with increasing demands for effective
vibration isolation. Advances into
microcosmic realms, with the concomitant
high resolutions demanded of
today's technical equipment, call for
rigorous isolation of the equipment from
any vibration that may occur at the
workplace. There are three primary
sources of the disturbances that hinder
vibration-sensitive work
Ground or floor vibration, caused by
vibrations in the building, nearby
machinery, or street traffic
Acoustic vibration, caused by speech, air
conditioning units, equipment cooling
fans, etc., which activates the natural
vibration of the work surface.
Equipment vibration, caused by lasers,
power supplies, etc., that rest on the
same work surface.
Laboratory Tables, Design Features
Bearing Frame
The bearing frame of the support system
exhibits especially high rigidity thanks to
its dual tie-bar construction and
additional corner connections. The
unwanted effects of resonance are thus
prevented. The working height is 785 or
835 mm, depending on the Table Top
thickness, for comfortable use in a seated
position even over long periods of time.
An integrated height adjustment
mechanism compensates for any slant or
irregularity, for example on tiled floors,
to ensure a level, stationary work
surface. The support system can be
equipped with retractable transport
casters on request (see page 329).
These extreme demands on vibration
isolation equipment led to the development
of our Series 63 Laboratory Tables.
Series 63 Tables are designed specifically
for sedentary work and have a comprehensive
range of accessories for adaptation
to any task. Especially in the fields of
biology (e.g., electrophysiology, ultramicrotomy
and photomicroscopy) and
electronics (e.g., semiconductor wafer
inspection), these vibration-isolated work
surfaces are indispensable.
heavy loads, can be provided on
request.
Optical Tables
Laboratory Tables, Table Tops
The efficacy of a Table Top is determined
by three primary factors: mass, rigidity
and damping. The mass and rigidity, in
turn, define the frequency range for
optimum working conditions.
With low-frequency vibration, a large
mass causes slight accelerations of the
Table Top.
High rigidity causes high resonance
frequency. Thus even when subjected to
high-frequency vibration, the natural
vibration of the Table Top is not easily
activated.
Thanks to strong damping, the natural
vibration of the Table Top incited by
acoustic disturbances or equipment
vibrations (e.g. lasers) subsides rapidly.
With three types of Table Top available
in a variety of sizes, you are sure to find
the right Table Top for any application:
The standard Table Top for almost all
areas of use is the stainless steel Table
Top. This Table Top is suitable for
applications in which no bore holes are
required for fastening instruments.
Magnetic feet can be mounted on the
Table Top.
Stainless steel Table Tops with plastic
coatings are ideal for experiments that
require an electrically isolated surface, or
in which aggressive liquids play a role.
For applications with extremely stringent
requirements on damping and rigidity,
the CleanTop IITable Top is the best
choice. In addition to the option of using
magnetic feet, M6 tapped bores are also
provided for mounting instruments.
Stainless-steel Table Tops
Two steel plates, which give the Table
Top its high stiffness and weight, are
laminated onto a core of dam ping
material using epoxy resin. This laminate
structure is inserted into a seamless
drawn, stainless-steel, shell with rounded
edges and corners, and the entire
assem b ly is bonded together with epoxy
resin to form a unit. The shell is then
sealed by a steel plate backed with a
special damping material in order that
the finished Table Top will retain its
original high performance, even after
many years of use.
These types of Table Tops are highly
suitable for suppor ting experimental
setups and equipment that need not be
bolted down. Their rounded edges and
corners make cleaning a snap. These
Table Tops are 50 mm thick, provi ding a
working surface height of 785 mm.
Their damping characteristics and compliance
curves are presented next page.
Plastic-coated stainless-steel Table Tops
This type of Table Top has the same
laminated-shell structure as our stainlesssteel
Table Tops, and has iden- tical
compliance curves and damping
characteris tics. Some applications require
CleanTop II Table Tops
This type of Table Top is of the same
universally recog nized design as our
Optical Table Tops, i.e., a close-celled steel
honeycomb core sandwiched between
heavy-gauge steel plates, all laminated
together to form a rigid unit using
on-aging epoxy resin. These have 5 mm
gauge, magnetic stainless-steel top plates
with total planity better than ±0.13 mm.
These Table Tops are provided with a grid
of M6 threaded holes on 25 mm centers,
allowing mounting of equipment and
rapid assembly of experimental setups.
All threaded holes are sealed using our
patented Clean-Top process, which
individually seals holes with caps that
preclude liquids entering their cores and
attacking epoxy bonding.
Their sidewalls are also fabricated from
steel plates, and have damping materials
applied to their inner surfaces. This results
in highly uniform structural units that
ex- pand /contract uniformly in response
to, e.g., ambient temperature drifts or
localized heating, and virtually precludes
bending. These Table Tops are 100 mm
thick, providing a working surface height
of 835 mm.
Articulated Arm Rests
Articulated arm rests are a great
convenience in work requiring operating
equipment and/or instrumentation
without disturbing table vibration
isolators. Articulated arm rests serve the
same purpose as the much simpler
padded arm rests listed on the preceding
page, but are equipped with adjustments
allowing them to be positioned to suit
requirements of the work being
performed and/or individual preferences.
A further benefit is that they may be
used with mounting frames or Faraday
cages.
Faraday Cages and Accessories
The Type II Faraday Cage offers improved
access and simplified assembly. The
”window-shade” type retracting front
panel is easier to operate than hinged
doors and causes less disturbance when
adjusted. This front panel may be
positioned anywhere between fully
opened and closed and stays in position
without a fastener. The front door is
shipped assembled and the entire unit
may be assembled in a few minutes with
a screwdriver (provided).
This cage incorporates the same stainless
steel frame and copper-mesh material as
previous versions. It mounts to (and
requires) the full-perimeter enclosures
and mounts to our 63-500 Series tables.
BenchTop Faraday Cage
Until recently, our Faraday Cages have
only been available as part of a complete
LINOS vibration isolation table system.
The cages required our Perimeter
Enclosure option and could not be
assembled without a LINOS 63-500 Series
Vibration Isolation Table as its base.
We now offer the same line of 40 in.
(1000 mm) tall cages with a baseplate
which allows the cage to be used on a
bench-top without a corresponding
LINOS table. The base of the cage is a
reinforced stainless steel plate which can
support a compact vibration isolation
system, microscope, or other instrument.
Vibration-Isolated Equipment Platform, 66 Series
For vibration isolation of smallequipment,
such as microscopes andanalytical
balances, TMC and LINOS havedeveloped
the 66 Series compactequipment
platform as an alternative tothe full-size
63 Series Laboratory Tables.This platform
features an exceptionallylow profile and
outstanding vibrationisolation characteristics.
Its lightweightand compact
design makes it easy totransport and
flexible for use in a varietyof applications.
Any stable table issuitable for
setting up the platform.Typical applications
include thefollowing:
••
Microscopy
••
Cell injection
••
Electrophysiology
••
Measurement and test technology
••
Metrology
Low-profile enclosure
The enclosure base and sides are made of
electropolished stainless steel. The
vibration-isolated working platform
consists of a 6.5-mm thick, powder-coat
painted steel plate. Because the platform
is only 76 mm high, it enables the user to
work in a relaxed position even over
relatively long periods, provided it is set
up on a table with a standard height.
CPSvibration isolators
The patented CPSvibration isolation
system integrated into the housing
features low natural frequency with both
vertical and horizontal vibration
isolation. As a result, the system excels at
damping low-frequency disturbances
caused by vibration in buildings and
randomly occurring vibration, such as
traffic noise and footfall soundgenerated
by people walking by.
The isolation system uses only air to
operate, with the required operating
pressure being approx. 5.5 bar (about
80psi). A self-leveling air spring isolator
ensures that the plate returns to its
original position when different
equipment weights are loaded. It is easy
to connect the system to an available
compressed air source or a compressor,
without requiring any tools, as a
self-sealing tube attachment is utilized
forconnection.
Custom Configurations
In addition to custom built Optical Table
Tops, LINOS also supplies support systems
and vibration-isolation systems modified
or built to client specifica tions. Here are
a few examples of what we are able to
supply:
Height adjustments
Support systems may be optionally
equipped with height adjustments that
will allow leveling Table Tops supported
on highly uneven floors.
Non-standard materials
Support systems fabricated from
client-specified mate rials, e.g., fabricated
entirely from non-magnetic mate-rial, are
available on special order.
Non-standard finishes, such as paintwork
meeting ultra- stringent cleanroom-compatibility
requirements, are also available.
Non-standard support-system heights
If none of the broad range of standard
heights proves suitable, LINOS Photonics
will supply any type of support system in
client-specified heights.
Gimbal Piston TM vibration-isolation
systems with greater load-bearing
capacities
Gimbal Piston TM vibration-isolation
systems may be supplied in greater
load-bearing capacities if applications
should require
All of our Optical Table Tops are
manufactured entirely in one plant. This
greatly simplifies our supplying modified
standard tables or custom table designs.
Illustrated below are several examples of
Optical Tables and coup led assemblies
built to customer specifications.
Joined tables
Optical Table Tops are available in
modular versions that may be joined
together.
These have one or more of their
sidewalls replaced by precision coupling
mechanisms welded onto their structures.
All tables equipped with coupling
mechanisms are assembled and tested as
units in the plant prior to disassembly for
shipment. Optical tables equipped with
coupling mechanisms may be joined in
order to provide very large table surfaces
and/or L-, T-, or X-shaped assemblies.
Once assembled, joints created by joining
tables are sealed using the metal strips
provided.
All tables with thicknesses of 200 mm or
more may be coupled together to form
arbitrary configurations.
Coupling mechanisms must be welded
onto table struc-tures during manufacture.
They cannot be retro fit ted.
Custom ports and cut-outs
In addition to our standard Laserport, we
also supply modified tables having larger
diameter ports, rectan gular ports, and/or
cut-outs.
We can also equip modified tables with
studs and/or adapter plates for use in
coupling them to other tables, or mating
them to existing facilities or equipment.
Special materials
Optical Tables may be fabricated from
alternative struc tural materials, if
required by specialized applications. The
special structural materials typically used
are non- magnetic stainless steels,
aluminum alloys, and super invar, any of
which may also be used in fabricating
Clean-Top sealing caps, honeycomb cores,
sidewalls, and/or bottom plates.
