The Panthers and Pantherettes, juniors at Linden McKinley STEM Academy, were of great assistance greeting
guests and making them feel welcome at their school. Brad Mitchell, OSU/Battelle Director of STEM Partnerships,
gave a brief demonstration of the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), now the curriculum
model for Linden’s feeder pattern. Of course, the evening wouldn’t be complete without a rousing selection
from the Linden McKinley marching band, under the direction of Chad Wilkins. A dessert reception catered by
Michael Mayfield, owner of Mayfield’s Custom Catering and the Linden Café, followed the awards presentation.
Columbus State Community College
Offers Training Programs for Youth
According to Nancy Case, Director of the
Transitional Workforce Department at Columbus
State Community College, “We hear so many stories
from out-of-school youth who are lost and don’t
know how to find work. Columbus State Community
College (CSCC) and the Central Ohio Workforce
Investment Corporation (COWIC) are working
together to provide training opportunities and GED
classes at no direct cost to youth who live within
Franklin County.”
Patti Eastman, Supervisor for the CSCC Youth
Services program says, “The Youth Services Program
connects out-of-school youth who are 16-21
years old to a training program that fits their specific
career goals, interests and talents. There are also nocost
GED classes and GED exam.”
Ms. Case added, “The Youth Services
work readiness workshops are facilitated by highlytrained
career advisors. The learning is engaging
and interactive. Most importantly, the workshops are
specifically designed for young adults in the early
stage of their careers. By the end of the program, our
participants know people who have a lot of connections
and who can help them find the right resources
for training, education, or job placement.”
If you are undecided about your career and
future, Columbus State has several short-term programs
that help you get on the right career track.
Pennies for Patients
South Mifflin STEM Academy is participating in
Pennies for Patients, a cancer education program and
fundraiser benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society. This program is being led by South Mifflin
STEM Academy’s Student Council members. Starting
February 14th and continuing for three weeks,
students will be collecting spare change and other
donations to help support and find a cure for leukemia,
lymphoma and myeloma. Also, each homeroom has
been assigned a “hero” -- a child who either is cancerfree
or is currently fighting this horrible cancer. The
students have gotten to know a little about their heroes
and have written letters to them. The students are very
excited to participate in finding a cure.
For more information or to make a donation
to help the students make a difference, contact Ali
Good News for the Greater Linden Community
Every year $1.7 billion dollars goes unclaimed in
the State of Ohio. This is money good citizens are
entitled to receive yet do not claim. They are in the
form of tax credits and other subsidies earmarked
for low to moderate income families. The good news
is Linden S.T.E.M. Academy has teamed up with
The Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks and
The Ohio Benefit Bank to help families apply for
needed services, including tax assistance and FAFSA
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid), which
is needed to obtain financial assistance for higher
education. The application process is simple, and all
services are free! While some organizations charge
a hefty price to file taxes, the Ohio Benefit Bank
always offers this service absolutely FREE. Benefit
Bank counselors are available to assist through the
process or applicants can use self help stations.
As you may already know, Linden S.T.E.M.
Academy (at the corner of Cleveland Ave. and
Westerville Rd.) is an educational institution, and our
primary mission is to educate not only children, but
the community as a whole. Our school is home to
over five hundred students in grades pre- kindergarten
through sixth grade. The economic conditions of
the student body translate to the majority living at or
below the federal poverty line. This is one of the reasons
the Benefit Bank is housed in our school. Our
school provides a well-rounded curriculum, which
Improving your credit and/or buying a
home are not impossible! Ask the many
graduates of Greater Linden Development
Corp.’s F.I.T.T. and H.O.M.E. programs.
Greater Linden Development Corp. offers
two FREE programs – F.I.T.T. and H.O.M.E. --
that give you the opportunity to get on the right
track financially in 2011.
F.I.T.T. (Financial Independence Today
and Tomorrow) is a class that helps you improve
your credit, set a budget, and learn about savings
and investments and other money-related topics.
H.O.M.E. (Housing Opportunities Made for
Everyone) is a homebuyer education program that
helps the first-time homebuyer understand what
it takes financially to buy a home, as well as the
process, documents and professionals involved.
F.I.T.T. is taught over two consecutive Monday
evenings and one Saturday. The H.O.M.E.
Buyer Education series is offered as either a Monday
night series for six weeks, or as a Saturday
series on two consecutive Saturdays. Each participant
is also required to schedule a one-on-one
financial counseling session with GLDC’s F.I.T.T./
H.O.M.E. coordinator to review his or her budget
and address any credit issues. Each H.O.M.E.
graduate will receive a certificate of completion
which will be honored by the City of Columbus for
12 months from the date of completion.
GLDC’s H.O.M.E. Program has been certified
by the City of Columbus to provide home
ownership education since August 2005. The City’s
certification means that H.O.M.E. graduates may
qualify for down payment assistance (based on
income eligibility and funding availability). Last
year, 26 graduates of the H.O.M.E. program bought
a home – a dream come true for many of them!
Don’t let fear or embarrassment over your
financial situation keep you from this great opportunity
in 2011. Call 294-9600 today or email
One of the best features of Greater Linden Development
program (see article above) is that it is team taught
by a talented and caring group of experienced and
qualified professionals called H.O.M.E. Buddies. The
H.O.M.E. Buddies are real estate agents, mortgage
lenders, home inspectors and other professionals who
help our students understand each step of the homebuying
process and what to expect with each step. The
H.O.M.E. Buddies are valued partners and a key element
in the H.O.M.E. and F.I.T.T. programs’ success.
YOUR promise fulfilled…call today!
You are never too old!
Lincoln Taylor purchased his home at the tender
age of 79! A veteran who served our country
back in the 40s, Lincoln longed to purchase his
own home. He finally decided that he would do
just that. On a fixed income and a participant in
CMHA’s Homeownership Program, he began
to put his affairs in order. He attended GLDC’s
H.O.M.E. Buyer Education and F.I.T.T. classes,
and in no time at all he became the proud owner of
bus since obtaining his Management and Marketing
degree from The Ohio State University in 1996.
Cordell is in his 14th year in the mortgage
industry and has just completed his sixth year as an
owner. His company’s mission statement is “Trust
and Honesty at its Best,” and Cordell strives to
provide industry leading service and education to all
of his clients. As a result of his outstanding service,
Cordell received the 2009 “Micro Entrepreneur of the
Year” award from Increase Community Development
Corporation (ICDC).
Cordell shows his true entrepreneurial spirit
while also running his four other businesses including
Salon Bella, Trinity Productions, Boss Network and
CD Investments. He is a member of several organizations,
including Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc, Pride
of the Hilltop Lodge #110, and Alla Baba Temple #53.
Additionally, he utilizes his financial knowledge and
experience by teaching financial literacy and budget
courses for various non-profit organizations and corporations
throughout central Ohio.
(Buddies continued on pg 6.)
his very first home. He is truly a testament that you
can accomplish whatever you set your mind
on accomplishing, no matter how long it takes.
Congratulations, Mr. Taylor, and may you have
many wonderful years in your new home!
Against all odds…
Friends and family said, “You will never be able to
do it,” but Kevin Eskridge persevered and proved
everyone wrong. Although he was faced with many
adverse situations in life, he never allowed them
to become stumbling blocks. Kevin was also a
participant in CMHA’s Homeownership Program.
Proud graduate Kevin Eskridge (back row, center)
He personally sought out various programs that
would better his financial situation and ultimately
enable him to purchase his first home. Through
hard work and perseverance, he increased his
credit score over 150 points! Kevin beamed with
a wonderful smile at his H.O.M.E. graduation. He
was destined for success and would not stop until
he had achieved his goal of homeownership. Today
he resides in a comfortable home and can often be
found outside, grilling up a delicious dinner!
A thank you from Ramona Spaulding
When I decided to pursue home ownership, I had
no idea where to start. However, the H.O.M.E.
buyers education class really helped educate me on
the process and prepared me to achieve my goals.
By following their guidance, I was able to increase
my credit score from 630 to 700! I have and
will continue to recommend anyone I know who
is looking to become a home owner to take the
H.O.M.E. buyers education class
at Greater Linden Development
Corp. I can’t thank them enough!
PompKids Co. Ready to
Celebrate Its 2nd
As PompKids Co. gets set to celebrate
its 2nd anniversary in April, the future
appears as bright as the colors in their
store. “I’m happy that we’re coming
out of the murky area between thrift
shop and resale, and embracing the
upscale boutique ambiance without
sacrificing our prices,” says owner Maritza
Alvarado. “You will notice in the
coming months the new sign designed
by The Neighborhood Design Center. A re-beautification of the store will be completed
this spring.”
Several months ago, PompKids Co. also became an authorized school uniform
dealer for Dickies, which they sell in addition to beautiful new and barely-used
children’s clothing and shoes. This summer they will be adding uniforms by French
Toast. This June, they will offer uniforms on a Lay-A-Way plan to help defray the
expense incurred when purchasing a child’s school wardrobe. “We are excited about
our new strategies and remain focused on the needs of our customers,” Maritza
emphasized.
One of the big changes coming this spring is the extension of the store hours
to being open every day. Another change is the creation of two part-time positions.
“We are hoping that more of the community will take the opportunity to visit. I’m
sure they will like what they find and keep coming back.”
If you haven’t visited
PompKids Co. yet, you need
to! They have a great selection
of children’s clothing
and shoes at very reasonable
prices.
From 2010 to 2011
“We Are Brightening Lives”
As 2010 was coming to a close, St. Stephen’s Community
House, in partnership with the Central Ohio
AFL-CIO, was busy preparing for the 2010 Christmas
Care/One New Toy Program.
On December 19th and 20th,
more than 750 volunteers
braved cold weather conditions
to come to St. Stephen’s Community
House (SSCH) to sort,
package and distribute food and
toys to Linden area residents.
The volunteers ranged from the
very young to the not-so very
young. Whatever the age, the spirit of community
was overwhelming. Volunteers were eager to assist
in any way possible and left at the end of their shifts
looking forward to assisting in December 2011. One
first time volunteer commented “This was one of the
most rewarding activities I have ever participated in.”
Food items to be sorted
As 2011 was ushered in,
St. Stephen’s Community
House was again preparing,
in partnership with
Swan Cleaners, for the
annual Coats for Kids.
The coats were delivered
on January 19th and volunteers
from Gahanna,
Columbus and Pickerington
came out to help
organize and hang more
than 400 coats for all ages. The opening ceremony for
Coats for Kids was held on January 20th with City
Councilman Hearcel Craig, Michelle Mills, President/
CEO of SSCH and Tony Dudzig, Vice President of
Swan Cleaners, addressing the volunteers, staff and
residents in attendance. By the end of the day on
January 21st, more than 320 coats had been distributed
to the community, along with donated accessories
like snow suits, hats and gloves, pants, and tops. Both
volunteers and community members were glad to be a
part of this much needed program.
Better Birth Outcomes for our Babies
What Family Members Can Do to Help
Linden’s statistics on infant deaths and the number of birth certificates without
a father’s name are alarming. Research has shown that an engaged and
active father makes a significant difference toward better birth outcomes for
our babies. How do we make that happen? Here are some easy steps family
members can take.
We must begin engaging expectant fathers early in the pregnancy.
The best time to engage the “expectant father” is
while his wife or partner is pregnant. There are
many family members who can do this including
his mother, grandmother, brother, sister, uncle,
aunt and “fictive kin.” (Fictive kin are the people
we treat like relatives even though there’s no
blood connection.) A trusted relative or fictive
kin is in a perfect position to engage the expectant
father on a level that no one else can.
How? A good way to begin is by asking
him questions without responding to his answers.
Here are three easy questions: (1) How do you
feel about the pregnancy? (2) Do you think you
will have a future with the mother? (3) Do you
feel prepared for the financial and emotional responsibilities of raising a child?
The key in this stage is to LISTEN. Most expectant fathers need someone to
listen and not judge or tell them how BIG of a mistake they have made.
Insight: Many expectant fathers are scared. Fear is a distressing
emotion and a basic survival mechanism. Fear is the ability to recognize
danger and flee from it or fight. The expectant father may try to flee or escape
being involved unless someone allows him to share his fears without judging
or criticizing him. With your support, he can overcome fear. There will be
ample time for instruction later.
What family members should not do! Family members should not
contribute to ambiguity by participating in the great debate: “Is he the father?”
Technology can easily answer this question. A quick DNA test will
provide the results. Family members can undermine the baby’s beginnings in
life by raising questions of paternity or criticizing the expectant mother. The
At their February meeting, the
Greater Linden Blockwatch
Alliance enjoyed a presentation
by Columbus SWAT (Special
Weapons and Tactics) officers.
expectant father may use this as rationale for not
assuming any responsibility and not supporting
the mother. She needs his support and the baby
needs his presence and support prior to birth.
Recommend a Fatherhood Program. Many
expectant fathers need a fatherhood program for
three reasons: (1) They did not have a good father
role model growing up. (2) They are being asked to
perform responsibilities and demonstrate fathering
skills they never received. (3) They are good young
men, NOT criminals or a threat to the mother or
the baby, but they need good information on how
to be a responsible father and have a caring adult
relationship.
Linden Neighborhood Plans Update
The process to update the neighborhood plans for
both North and South Linden continues with its
focus on land use and urban design recommendations.
The Columbus Planning Division is working
with neighborhood stakeholders toward adoption of
guidelines that will help to shape and evaluate future
proposals for development and redevelopment in the
Linden area.
Two public open houses have been held and
a third is scheduled for Thursday, March 31st, from
6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Linden Recreation Center,
1254 Briarwood Ave. (in Linden Park). City staff
will present and request public comment on draft
recommendations to be included in the planning
document. All are welcomed to participate! Prior
involvement in the planning process is not necessary.
In Memoriam
Raymond (Ray) E. Humphrey, age 60,
departed this life on February 2, 2011, at
his residence. Mr. Humphrey worked
with the City of Columbus for 36 years,
mostly at Blackburn Rec Center. He last served as
director at Linden Recreation Center on Briarwood,
where he worked for over seven years. The #1 diamond
at the Linden Recreation Center has been renamed and
a marker placed in his honor.
Mr. Humphrey was always very helpful to
Linden groups and organizations who wanted to use
Linden Rec Center for community meetings or programs.
He was a strong role model for youth at the
Center, setting high expectations for their behavior and
achievements. Our thoughts and condolences are with
his family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances.
North Linden Area Commission
Mark D. Hunter, Chair
The North Linden Area
Commission (NLAC) would like
to invite residents and business
owners to a meeting with Columbus
City Council. This meeting
will take place on February 22,
2011 from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M.
at the Feddersen Recreation Center,
3911 Dresden (43224). This is an opportunity
to let council members know what your issues are in
your community.
In addition to this meeting, residents should
know that the North Linden Area Commission meets
the first and third Thursdays of the month. Meetings
are held every month with the exception of August
for summer recess. The planning meeting is held
at the Linden Recreation Center, 1254 Briarwood
(43211) on the first Thursday of the month. The
regular meeting is held on the third Thursday of the
month at the Feddersen Recreation Center, 3911 Dresden
(43224). Meetings start at 6:30 P.M. I would invite
everyone to attend.
The Commission serves as an advisory group
to Columbus City Council. Some of the successes
that we have accomplished are lobbying for a new
Medic at Station 16, and ensuring that the Linden
Recreation Center will have a new Shelter House for
residents to enjoy in the spring of 2011.
In closing, there are currently vacant seats on
the commission. If you have an interest in making the
Linden Area a better place to live, I would encourage
you to attend a meeting. If you like what you see, we
would encourage you to join our efforts to make the
community better. If you do not like what you see,
perhaps we can use your ideas and leadership skills
to take our efforts in a different direction. Either way,
your participation in the effort to make the community
The First Pastors’ Chili Cook-off
The First Pastors’ Chili Cook off was held Saturday, February 5th at the Linden Recreation Center. There were 4 Pastors
brave enough to share their famous chili. The winning batch was made by Pastor Don Morrison, with Pastor Larry
Cochran as runner up. Over 30 brave souls faced the cold weather and came out to sample the chili and be entertained
by children at the recreation center. Photos by Linda Simpson – In His Image Photography & Design
OTAP
(Orientation to Trade and Apprenticeship Program)
OTAP is one of the many CSCC training programs
available to young adults between the ages of
18-21 who are out of school.
Carol Higgins, the OTAP Supervisor, said, “It’s
difficult for young people to find training programs
that will give them the skills they need to get good
paying jobs.” Donald Ireland, a 2010 OTAP graduate,
says, “I’ve done a lot of different things in my life but
coming to OTAP was the best thing I’ve ever done. I
wanted to be an Operating Engineer. I felt confident,
prepped and ready to conquer my goals when I completed
the OTAP Program.”
OTAP training prepares young adults for jobs
in the trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrician,
weatherization, solar installer, and more. The OTAP
Green Bright Idea 10-week training program is offered
at no cost to the participants.
Amy Thompson, OTAP Coordinator, says,
“Several trade projects are coming to Franklin County
that will offer youth an opportunity to be placed in
jobs, such as building the Casino and The Ohio State
University’s Project One. The demand for entry level
workers will be great.” OTAP prepares participants
for placement into these type jobs and/or apprenticeship
programs where they can ‘earn-while-they-learn.’
Chris Yates, a 2010 OTAP graduate says, “Since I
graduated from OTAP, I haven’t missed a day of work.
Plus, I don’t worry about being laid off because I have
the skills necessary to do side jobs.”
Linden residents have the opportunity to sit
down with Columbus State staff and find out more
about these programs right here in our neighborhood
on Monday, February 21st. CSCC staff will
be available at the Point of Pride building (northeast
corner of Cleveland and Eleventh) from 10
a.m. – 2 p.m. to talk one-on-one about their offerings
and requirements. It’s a great opportunity for
you to find out next steps you can take to change
your future!
While in the Youth Services Program at Columbus
State:
“I learned about jobs, how to get a job, and the
best way to use an elevator speech for networking.”
“In the Building Bridges workshop, I learned the
importance of sharing ideas while building something
fun with others.”
“I discovered more strengths and weaknesses
about myself which will help me through a job interview.”
physical education, art, and music (including band
and orchestra). However, the curriculum becomes less
effective if our families do not have the means to provide
for students’ basic needs. The Benefit Bank helps
to make the process of applying for needed services
easier and faster.
Because the Benefit Bank is now part of the fabric
of the school, our goal at Linden S.T.E.M. Academy
is to assist as many people in the Linden community as
possible to apply for all the benefits they are entitled to
receive. Our plan is to assist with free tax preparation
from mid-January through April 18, 2011. However,
we are also available daily for assistance in obtaining
other services such as food assistance, heating and
cooling assistance, senior employment, child care subsidies,
child nutrition programs and health coverage.
if you qualify for any benefits, particularly during this
