2011 ANNUAL REPORT
Her Lair Above the Cliffs
By kenn BackhaUS
FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The many achievements of the Catalina Island Conservancy in 2011 to restore and sustain healthy and
vital wildlands have been the direct result of a strong and self-reliant organization, one boldly moving
forward with the visionary Imagine Catalina Strategic Plan. We are proud to share with you our financial
outcomes for the past calendar year with the publication of this Annual Report.
The significant gains for the Island’s emblematic species – fox, bison, and eagle – were unprecedented,
and as heartening for the Island’s ecological future as the discovery and rediscovery of plant species on
the Island:
• The Catalina Island fox, on the brink of extinction with an estimated 100 individuals at the century’s
outset from an outbreak of canine distemper, has recovered in numbers greater than the historic,
recorded level. About 1,300 animals were recorded before the outbreak; the estimated population at
the end of 2011 was 1,542. The Island-wide recovery of this endemic animal through the Conservancy’s
efforts has been an international ecological success story.
• The contraception program to limit the number of bison to near an Island-sustainable 150 reached its
goal as Conservancy biologists counted only five calves born in 2011, as opposed to 29 the previous year.
• Another iconic resident of Catalina’s wildlands, the bald eagle, again as in 2010, hatched nine chicks
unaided by biologists.
• This year saw the discovery of the stream orchid on Catalina; rediscovery of the federally endangered
Lyon’s pygmy daisy, which had not been seen on Catalina since 1931; and the conclusion by the scientific
community that the Santa Catalina Island bush mallow is genetically unique, bringing the tally for
Catalina’s endemic plants to seven.
Also during 2011, the Conservancy Education Department’s intensified outreach programs reached 12
times more students and naturalist trainees in 2011 than in 2010. For the first time in the Conservancy’s
history, art was added as an interpretive and outreach vehicle. This led to successful exhibits featuring
photography in Catalina: The Wildlands at Your Doorstep at the G2 Gallery in Venice, plein air paintings
by renowned artists in the maiden presentation of the Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show and Sale in
Avalon, and a new Conservancy collection of plein air art featuring Catalina naturescapes now on exhibit
at the Nature Center at Avalon Canyon.
The Imagine Catalina Strategic Plan with William McDonough + Partners during 2011 is already at work
guiding the Conservancy’s course as it will through future decades, building on our accomplishments.
In the first part of 2012, we are already implementing the plan by purchasing the Catherine Hotel as
the site of the Conservancy’s future Avalon visitor center, designing and launching a Mobile Nature
Station to serve guests at Two Harbors and elsewhere, and developing an exciting new site plan for the
rehabilitated and relocated Eagle’s Nest Lodge.
These highlights of 2011 represent remarkable strides in a banner year. You’re an important reason for
our accomplishments, so please join us as we look forward to more success in the coming years.
