In-depth <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g<br />
contact, <strong>the</strong> end<strong>in</strong>g of each contact, report<strong>in</strong>g back to participants<br />
and, f<strong>in</strong>ally, reach<strong>in</strong>g closure. Underly<strong>in</strong>g all of <strong>the</strong>se stages is <strong>the</strong><br />
relationship between researcher and participant. The researcher’s<br />
handl<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction and <strong>the</strong> extent to which <strong>the</strong>y develop a<br />
trust<strong>in</strong>g work<strong>in</strong>g relationship with <strong>the</strong>ir participants will always<br />
impact on <strong>the</strong> nature of <strong>the</strong> data obta<strong>in</strong>ed and, <strong>in</strong> many cases, has<br />
implications for <strong>the</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> participants. This is particularly<br />
so when <strong>the</strong> research concerns sensitive issues, as it did <strong>in</strong> both<br />
of <strong>the</strong> stories <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this chapter.<br />
We also considered <strong>the</strong> advantages of <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews as a<br />
data collection method. These <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong>ir high degree of <strong>in</strong>teractivity<br />
and capacity for responsiveness to <strong>the</strong> research context,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> capacity to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation about th<strong>in</strong>gs that cannot<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rwise be observed, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g thoughts and emotions as well as<br />
past and future events. In <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g chapter, on observation, we<br />
consider a form of data collection that can do what <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />
cannot, that is, to allow us to stand aside from events and watch<br />
<strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong>y occur.<br />
