<strong>Qualitative</strong> research <strong>in</strong> practice<br />
Yvonne:<br />
happens to <strong>the</strong>ir support and if <strong>the</strong>ir support from<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir work organisations breaks down, which was<br />
happen<strong>in</strong>g at that time, <strong>the</strong>n what happens? Th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
like that. So <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g it was <strong>the</strong> demographic<br />
considerations but gradually it was more <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />
considerations that guided me.<br />
Do you feel confident that at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> day you<br />
obta<strong>in</strong>ed a thorough mix of types of situation?<br />
Angel<strong>in</strong>a: Well, I don’t th<strong>in</strong>k it can be perfect, but as far as my<br />
particular piece of research is concerned, after <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> 27 women I thought that <strong>the</strong> questions<br />
that I had at <strong>the</strong> particular time were answered—but of<br />
course <strong>the</strong>re were many o<strong>the</strong>r questions that I would<br />
like to follow-up. But you can never follow-up all <strong>the</strong><br />
questions and you have to set a boundary. So after<br />
do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 27 <strong>in</strong>terviews I felt that I had to make a stop<br />
to it, o<strong>the</strong>rwise it would go on forever.<br />

Yvonne:<br />
I talked earlier (Chapter 1) about how I became <strong>in</strong>terested<br />
<strong>in</strong> this research topic and my choice of a<br />
qualitative methodology. In this chapter, I’ll comment<br />
on two aspects of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews: my <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g<br />
style and <strong>the</strong> women’s reports of <strong>the</strong>ir experience of<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terview, as reported dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> followup<br />
<strong>in</strong>terview. Ten women participated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> study.<br />
I had three meet<strong>in</strong>gs with each of <strong>the</strong>m: <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial<br />
contact <strong>in</strong> which we negotiated <strong>the</strong>ir participation <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> study, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terview and <strong>the</strong> follow-up<br />
<strong>in</strong>terview. The <strong>in</strong>-depth and follow-up <strong>in</strong>terviews were<br />
both taped and transcribed.<br />
Interview<strong>in</strong>g style<br />
The <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews were relatively unstructured. I had a<br />
short list of topics to cover but imposed no constra<strong>in</strong>ts on <strong>the</strong><br />
women <strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>the</strong> order <strong>in</strong> which topics were covered or how<br />
