happened, <strong>the</strong> situations were resolved by parents<br />
decid<strong>in</strong>g to put <strong>the</strong> children to bed or arrang<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
activities, but this does illustrate some of <strong>the</strong> unanticipated<br />
complexities of naturalistic studies <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
children.<br />
While I had rejected <strong>the</strong> possibility of <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g<br />
children because of <strong>the</strong> potential harm this might<br />
cause, I saw observation through a one-way screen as<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g a much lower level of <strong>in</strong>trusiveness and risk.<br />
In part this belief was shaped by it be<strong>in</strong>g rout<strong>in</strong>e<br />
practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hospital for colleagues to view <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />
through a one-way screen. It was hard to<br />
assess <strong>the</strong> level of <strong>in</strong>trusiveness and risk for a particular<br />
child entailed <strong>in</strong> observation. For example, for<br />
some children it may have a marked impact on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
capacity to express <strong>the</strong>ir feel<strong>in</strong>gs and make use of <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>rapeutic opportunity. Just because o<strong>the</strong>rs were<br />
observ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews for non-research purposes<br />
does not, however, necessarily justify it.<br />
In seek<strong>in</strong>g consent from <strong>the</strong> parents for <strong>the</strong> observation<br />
of <strong>in</strong>terviews with <strong>the</strong>ir child, I <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>the</strong>m<br />
that I planned to be present dur<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />
and that if, for some unexpected reason, I was unable<br />
to attend, <strong>the</strong>ir social worker would tell <strong>the</strong>m of my<br />
absence. In relation to <strong>the</strong> child, however, I accepted<br />
<strong>the</strong> way each social worker generally managed <strong>the</strong><br />
issue of observation. Some social workers rout<strong>in</strong>ely<br />
<strong>in</strong>formed <strong>the</strong> child at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>terview that sometimes<br />
<strong>the</strong>re would be people beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow and<br />
did not mention it aga<strong>in</strong>, while o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>the</strong><br />
child on each occasion and even showed <strong>the</strong>m<br />
<strong>the</strong> observation room and <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>the</strong>m to those<br />
observ<strong>in</strong>g. Although I was uncomfortable watch<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>terviews <strong>in</strong> which I was unsure whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> child<br />
was aware of be<strong>in</strong>g observed, it is possible that <strong>the</strong><br />
more comfortable I felt, <strong>the</strong> more <strong>in</strong>trusive <strong>the</strong> observation<br />
may have been and <strong>the</strong> greater its effect on <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>terview.<br />
In relation to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formed consent of colleagues,<br />
a difference between [my] understand<strong>in</strong>g of what <strong>the</strong><br />
social workers had agreed to and <strong>the</strong>ir understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
