<strong>From</strong> practice to research<br />
or exit from <strong>the</strong> marriage with<strong>in</strong> an organisational<br />
sett<strong>in</strong>g. So I was also concerned about <strong>the</strong> context <strong>in</strong><br />
which <strong>the</strong>y visited, <strong>the</strong> purpose of meet<strong>in</strong>g and visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and how nurs<strong>in</strong>g homes provided for family visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and so on...I was determ<strong>in</strong>ed to try and catch what<br />
it was like for <strong>the</strong> older people ...My concern was<br />
that <strong>the</strong>ir perspective wasn’t understood <strong>in</strong> practice or<br />
<strong>in</strong> policy. Visitors were be<strong>in</strong>g constructed <strong>in</strong> policy as<br />
resources to help <strong>the</strong> organisation and to provide<br />
resources for <strong>the</strong> resident, and I had a very firm view<br />
that <strong>the</strong> purpose and mean<strong>in</strong>g of visit<strong>in</strong>g for this group<br />
was particularly different.<br />
Comments<br />
Several po<strong>in</strong>ts about qualitative research emerge from <strong>the</strong>se<br />
examples. First, it is important to note that each of <strong>the</strong>se studies<br />
grew out of a particular time and place. For example, Tim and<br />
Wendy Booth’s study can be seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of <strong>the</strong> history of<br />
de<strong>in</strong>stitutionalisation and <strong>the</strong> emergence of reproductive rights for<br />
people with <strong>in</strong>tellectual disabilities. Similarly, Anne Coleman’s<br />
study is about a particular community of homeless people <strong>in</strong> a<br />
particular area that was undergo<strong>in</strong>g urban redevelopment and<br />
gentrification at a particular period of time. Cheryl Tilse’s study was<br />
a response to what she considered to be a too-narrow conception of<br />
<strong>the</strong> role of spouse visitors <strong>in</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g homes.<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> issues for qualitative research is <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> degree<br />
of generalisability of f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs across sett<strong>in</strong>gs. The researcher needs<br />
to acknowledge <strong>the</strong> limitation of <strong>the</strong>ir study’s f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> terms of<br />
<strong>the</strong> context <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y were obta<strong>in</strong>ed and give <strong>the</strong> reader sufficient<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation about this context. The reader needs to be aware<br />
of this so that <strong>the</strong>y can make allowances when extrapolat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs to o<strong>the</strong>r sett<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Second, it is probably obvious to <strong>the</strong> reader that <strong>the</strong> sample size<br />
<strong>in</strong> most of <strong>the</strong>se studies is much smaller than one would expect <strong>in</strong><br />
quantitative research and that <strong>the</strong> sample is often not selected<br />
systematically to ensure that it is representative of a particular<br />
population. Obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g representative samples <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se contexts is<br />
often very difficult, and as <strong>the</strong> researcher seeks greater depth<br />
of understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re is an <strong>in</strong>evitable trade-off <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> number of<br />
