Analys<strong>in</strong>g data<br />
I’d said that’, <strong>the</strong>n I would write that down. I repeated<br />
<strong>the</strong> process of typ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> [handwritten] field notes<br />
<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> field notes computer format. I’d go home and<br />
from those dot po<strong>in</strong>t notes write up <strong>the</strong> conversation<br />
as a separate conversation ...and aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> analysis<br />
of that was basically <strong>the</strong>matic. What I was look<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
was <strong>the</strong> breadth of <strong>the</strong> range of op<strong>in</strong>ions, so I would<br />
have been really disappo<strong>in</strong>ted if everybody had said<br />
exactly <strong>the</strong> same th<strong>in</strong>g—<strong>the</strong>y didn’t of course.<br />
Us<strong>in</strong>g The Ethnograph to order <strong>the</strong> data from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth<br />
<strong>in</strong>terviews<br />
Anne:<br />
I like to hold someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> my hand while I’m read<strong>in</strong>g<br />
it and I was extremely concerned about whe<strong>the</strong>r us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
The Ethnograph would somehow take <strong>the</strong> life out of<br />
<strong>the</strong> conversation or transform <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> some<br />
way, but I used it partly because I wanted to learn it<br />
and this was <strong>the</strong> perfect opportunity, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
th<strong>in</strong>g that it was really useful for was as a management<br />
tool. Although it was really useful, I’ve got to say I kept<br />
go<strong>in</strong>g back to <strong>the</strong> transcripts, to <strong>the</strong> hand-held ones.<br />
And I did a lot of stuff by hand ...I did <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial<br />
couple of rounds of cod<strong>in</strong>g by hand. When I thought<br />
I had a broad enough idea about <strong>the</strong> whole length and<br />
breadth of <strong>the</strong> content and I wasn’t cod<strong>in</strong>g myself <strong>in</strong><br />
too tightly, I <strong>the</strong>n entered <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> The Ethnograph and<br />
got all <strong>the</strong> numbered l<strong>in</strong>es and started to pull <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>mes out <strong>the</strong>re. But I never totally relied on The<br />
Ethnograph. To me, it was a management tool.<br />
Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e McDonald—Institutionalised organisations?<br />
Here Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e talks about how she analysed <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />
for her study on <strong>the</strong> application of neo-<strong>in</strong>stitutional <strong>the</strong>ory to<br />
<strong>the</strong> non-profit sector <strong>in</strong> Queensland. Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e’s work is an example<br />
of a very structured approach to qualitative data analysis—a deductive<br />
approach, essentially test<strong>in</strong>g an exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ory.<br />
