Analys<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> observational data<br />

What I did here was try and sort through <strong>the</strong> observations.<br />
I was try<strong>in</strong>g to l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>mes of <strong>in</strong>clusion<br />
and exclusion and so I really looked at <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> those<br />
terms ra<strong>the</strong>r than just describ<strong>in</strong>g this happened to this<br />
visitor, this happened to that visitor—I looked at <strong>the</strong>m<br />
all and said, ‘Well, what practices and provisions<br />
<strong>in</strong>cluded people and what excluded family visitors?’<br />
So I tried to structure it that way so it allowed me to<br />
conta<strong>in</strong> heaps of <strong>in</strong>formation—notebooks of descriptions<br />
of what happened to people. I had some basic<br />
research questions, for example, ‘How were <strong>the</strong>y<br />
provided for?’ So I did a description of what <strong>the</strong> provision<br />
was—were <strong>the</strong>re family visit<strong>in</strong>g rooms? Were<br />
<strong>the</strong>re kettles? Was <strong>the</strong>re equipment for families, notebooks<br />
for families to write th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>? So I looked at<br />
provision and <strong>the</strong>n I looked at <strong>the</strong> treatment of visitors<br />
and when I talked about treatment it was just this<br />
<strong>the</strong>me of <strong>in</strong>clusion/exclusion.<br />
The document analysis<br />
Cheryl:<br />
The content analysis basically just picked up what<br />
guides [<strong>the</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g homes] had—<strong>the</strong>y’d have some<br />
guides to family visit<strong>in</strong>g or notes for families. Then I<br />
did a content analysis and identified what roles <strong>the</strong>y<br />
constructed for families—are <strong>the</strong>y resources? Like,<br />
‘We appreciate your help with feed<strong>in</strong>g and br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />
clo<strong>the</strong>s’, or are <strong>the</strong>y seen as, ‘Come jo<strong>in</strong> us. You’re<br />
part of <strong>the</strong> family. We’d like to get to know you.’ You<br />
know, <strong>the</strong> underly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mes. So it was really <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
see<strong>in</strong>g how particular facilities constructed very<br />
clear roles [for families].<br />
