Mix<strong>in</strong>g methods<br />
<strong>in</strong>credibly arrogant and presumptive about our ability<br />
to make a context where it is safe to talk about <strong>the</strong>se<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> like five m<strong>in</strong>utes, ten m<strong>in</strong>utes, whatever it<br />
might be, and that maybe we need to th<strong>in</strong>k about<br />
people as complicated, that <strong>the</strong>re is no perfect method,<br />
so <strong>the</strong>re will be some for whom <strong>the</strong> questionnaire is<br />
a much easier th<strong>in</strong>g to do, is a much easier form of<br />
communication <strong>in</strong> which to tell complicated difficult<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs, and <strong>the</strong>re will be o<strong>the</strong>r people for whom<br />
spoken communication is easier. And <strong>the</strong>n if we start<br />
talk<strong>in</strong>g about women and children with disabilities,<br />
we enter ano<strong>the</strong>r whole realm aga<strong>in</strong>, so I th<strong>in</strong>k about<br />
mixed methods as enabl<strong>in</strong>g different k<strong>in</strong>ds of tell<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e McDonald—Institutionalised organisations?<br />
Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e McDonald used a comb<strong>in</strong>ation of quantitative and<br />
qualitative methods for her PhD study on <strong>the</strong> application of neo<strong>in</strong>stitutional<br />
organisational <strong>the</strong>ory to non-profit organisations <strong>in</strong><br />
Queensland. She has subsequently reported on methodological<br />
issues <strong>in</strong> relation to this study (McDonald, 1997, 1999).<br />
The research was conducted <strong>in</strong> two stages. Stage one <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
a survey of 500 non-profit services, from which twelve services<br />
with ei<strong>the</strong>r very high or very low organisational commitment were<br />
identified. Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>n sought to test each of <strong>the</strong> propositions of<br />
neo-<strong>in</strong>stitutional <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>in</strong> each of <strong>the</strong>se services. She did this<br />
through semi-structured <strong>in</strong>terviews with <strong>the</strong> CEO and with one<br />
worker directly <strong>in</strong>volved with clients, and through analysis of<br />
public documents on <strong>the</strong> goals and f<strong>in</strong>ancial status of each of <strong>the</strong><br />
organisations.<br />
We were particularly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e’s rationale for us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
mixed methods and <strong>the</strong> way she comb<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> this study.<br />
Why mixed methods?<br />
Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e: The reason that it went to a mixed-method type<br />
approach was [actually] two reasons. One was<br />
because I was look<strong>in</strong>g at a whole field of organisations,<br />
so one approach could never deal with <strong>the</strong><br />
