Background to Study
The South African clinical laboratory products markets are in late- to mature growth phase. Clinical
chemistry- and immunoassay analysers are the largest contributors to revenue income in this
market, followed by haematology analysers. Revenue income from urinalysis and coagulation
systems are substantially lower.
Technology trends followed in private laboratories indicate the use and implementation of integrated
systems and consolidated workstations, while public laboratories still make use of stand-alone
automated analysers. It is expected that this trend would drive the future market although growth
will decrease over the forecast period.
The market size for clinical laboratory products was estimated to be $83.9 million with a CAGR of
4.1% from 2007 to 2013 to reach $111.2 million in 2013.
Research Deliverables
There are 1 326 clinical laboratories in South Africa.
The National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) –
the public health service provider – comprise 250
(18.9%) of the total laboratories and can be
accessed nationwide.
The largest private laboratory group (based on
number of laboratories) – Lancet – comprises 188
(14.2%) of the total laboratories while Ampath has
a total of 150 (11.3%), and Pathcare 69 (5.2%).
Integrated systems and the consolidation of
workstations are in infancy stage and it is expected
that this trend will drive the long-term growth of this
market.
Future growth in this market will depend greatly on
the expansion of current laboratories and the
founding of new laboratories, if patient volumes
demand this.
The replacement of current systems and
incorporation of new systems are another area that
will increase growth.
Key Industry Challenges:
