1. Purpose 

This manual describes the required procedures before delivering 

inventory vehicles (trucks, buses/coaches, incl. CKD/SKD) to the end 

customer. 

The aim is to deliver these vehicles to the customer in a technically and 

visually immaculate condition. 

In order to guarantee improved handling and shorter process execution 

times, all necessary measures for inventory vehicle maintenance are 

outlined in this manual (VR58A). 

This manual replaces SD2146/47. 

Subject to change: MAN reserves the right to update this instruction or to 

adjust it to changes in circumstances at any time. 

2. Scope 

The manual is valid regionally for all sales regions 

(MAN importers/partners) and the independent and dependent 

organisational units allocated to them, as well for trucks, buses and 

CKD/SKD, for complete vehicles and chassis (scope of supply MN) and 

for builders commissioned by MAN. All dealers outside the MN sales 

network and body manufacturers not commissioned by MAN are deemed 

customers and will be treated accordingly. 




3. Terms and definitions 

Inventory vehicles 

Delivered vehicles, trucks, buses, CKD/SKD, complete vehicles and 

chassis (scope of supply MN), builders which are commissioned by MAN 

and owned by the sales region/importer/sales office and which are older 

than 3 months (based on delivery date ex works). 

Delivery date 

The reference date for determining the service life is the delivery date from 

production/ex works (including for CKD/SKD) in accordance with AVIS. 

4. Service maintenance 

Service maintenance includes correct storage, as well as regular checks 

on inventory vehicles. 

All service maintenance work appropriate/feasible for the technical 

scope/vehicle state of construction (e.g. chassis, MAN scope of delivery) 

should be carried out. 

4. a) Warehousing and parking of inventory vehicles: 

Wash the vehicle following transfer if necessary (in accordance with 

Service Information 192412) 




It is advantageous to park the vehicle either on an even, paved and dry 

surface (tarmac, concrete) or, if possible, under cover/in a hall. 

Secure vehicle against rolling with wheel chocks 




Close windows, doors, skylight and/or sunroof 

Set windscreen wipers to a neutral position 




Fold rear mirrors 

Remove dirt, snow and moisture from the floor of the vehicle 




Batteries have to be disconnected every time the vehicle is parked (in 

accordance with Service Information 114002 ‘batteries’). It is not 

enough to simply turn off the main switch!

4. b) Service maintenance timetable 

In the following illustration you will find the actions that have to be carried 

out and at which time (age of vehicle ex works AVIS) on a inventory 

vehicle.

4. c) Extent of service maintenance 

Small service maintenance 

Visual check (especially interior for moisture) 

Check tyre pressure and adjust if required (according to 

manual) 

Repair discovered faults where necessary 

Medium service maintenance (see attachment 3/4) 

Check in accordance with attachment 3 (for trucks) and

Trucks: Inspection I annually with unit oil change in accordance 

with the acceptance and oil change sheet (Profit Check III), or 

service with engine oil change + S12 with unit oil change in 

accordance with the acceptance and oil change sheet (Profit 

Check II) without valve setting (see Service Information 352712) 

BUSES: Inspection I, (in accordance with the 

service/inspection maintenance check list) without valve setting 




4. d) Proof of service maintenance sheet (attachment 1) 

A proof of service maintenance sheet (attachment 1) has to be kept for 

every single inventory vehicle. All carried out repairs have to be 

documented on this sheet. This checklist is to be stored in the vehicle. 

Before delivery to the end customer, the checklist has to be removed and 

filed for 15 years in the vehicle records (VTG1) for control purposes. 




5. Retaining defect liability for inventory vehicles (13-36 months 

from delivery ex works) 

According to MN guidelines (Q604/B604), a vehicle with a service life of 

over 12 months is no longer a new vehicle. This means that production 

units no longer accept defect liability. 

Measures for reactivating the defect liability: 

For inventory vehicles, proof that the work has been carried out is provided 

in the maintenance certificate (proof of service maintenance sheet) 

(attachment 1). 

The contractor and cost unit for the check is the sales region importer. 

The costs of the inspection/service and repairing any damage cannot be 

recognised/processed as part of the defect liability or goodwill services, 

since the aim is to keep the quality to the same standard as a new vehicle. 

For the activation of the defect liability, the application to retain the defect 

liability (attachment 2) is made with the After Sales- Service Support- 

Warranty Processes department, which then sets the start date for the 

standard defect liability in the system. 

This means that the production units take on full defect liability for 2 years 

(1 year for the complete vehicle and 2 years on the driveline), usually from 

the first vehicle registration or handover to the customer. 

Important note: For vehicles older than 24 months (25-36 months) 

(based on delivery date ex works), the defect liability begins a fixed 

24 months from the delivery date ex works. This date is also used as 

the reference date for the purchase guarantee and normal goodwill. 




5. a) What are the tasks of the sales region? 

Carry out repairs according to 4.b 

Document repairs on the proof of service maintenance sheet

Submission of “claim for preservation of defect liability for inventory 

vehicles” (attachment 2) 

5. b) What is addressed to whom? 

The claim for preservation of defect liability for inventory vehicles has to 

be sent to the Service Support Warranty Processes department 

immediately after the carrying out of repairs, in accordance with 4.b.

The applicant receives an e-mail response after the defect liability has 

been successfully logged. 

The claim for preservation of defect liability for inventory vehicles 

(attachment 2) is archived at the Service Support Warranty Processes 

department. 




6. Verification of service maintenance 

Service Support Warranty reserves the right to check compliance of service 

maintenance at any time and to take necessary action in case of 

noncompliance.

8. Notes/questions/answers 

Question: Are VTG16 checks still accepted for retaining defect 

liability? 

Answer: No, with the publication of this manual, VTG16 

documents/test reports will no longer be accepted for retaining 

defect liability. 

Question: What service maintenance do vehicles have to start with 

for the transfer from VTG16 to VR58A? 

Answer: For the transfer from VTG16 to the VR58A manual, the 

service maintenance relevant for the age of the vehicle must be 

carried out as outlined under Point 4.b (time plan service 

maintenance). 

Note: For vehicles aged >12 and < 24 months, a large service 

maintenance must always be carried out before the vehicle is 

handed over to the customer (if this has not already been 

carried out). 




Question: Can the costs for service maintenance measures be 

processed/reimbursed under defect liability or on a goodwill basis? 

Answer: No, the costs of the inspection/service and repairing any 

damage cannot be recognised/processed as part of defect liability or 

goodwill services, as the aim is to keep the quality to the same 

standard as a new vehicle. 

Question: Is it possible to acquire a purchase guarantee for 

inventory vehicles maintained in accordance with VR58A? 

Answer: Yes, it is possible to acquire a purchase guarantee within 

12 months from the first vehicle registration or the start of defect 

liability. 

Question: When does the defect liability begin for vehicles which 

are > 24 and



Question: Can the interim care measures for vehicles standing at a 

body manufacturer commissioned by MAN be carried out by that 

body manufacturer? 

Answer: Yes, the small and medium interim care inspection can 

also be performed by the body manufacturer, but the main interim 

care inspection must be carried out by the Service network of the 

sales organisation. 

Note: The documentation from the interim care inspections must be 

forwarded to the sales region.
