BISHOP MARK :
THOUGHT FOR
THE MONTH
Rejoice -
and be inspired!
Wednesday 5 June was a day of
great rejoicing for the diocesan family
here in Manchester, as downing street
announced that The Queen had approved
the nomination of the Rt Revd david
Walker, currently Bishop of dudley, for
election as the next Bishop of
Manchester.
as I said in welcoming Bishop
david at the press conference that
morning – ‘Thanks be to God’!
The Crown nominations
Commission clearly responded to what
we said we were looking for in our new
bishop in our diocesan statement.
If we’re wondering what we’re getting,
a good indicator is to look at
Bishop david’s ministry so far: his
depth of spirituality, his passion to see
people find the fullness of life in Christ,
his commitment to inclusion and justice,
to welfare and housing and to so much
more. We have a great deal to look forward
to in welcoming him as our chief
pastor and leader in mission.
Together with Bishop Chris and the
Bishop’s Leadership Team I am so
much looking forward to working with
Bishop david and supporting him in his
ministry here. I know he’ll receive a
great welcome home from across the
diocese in which, for him, it all began.
above all, in these weeks and
months before he begins his ministry
with us and for us please pray for Bishop
david, and for sue and their family.
Long service gifts
Heating system guidance
one of the challenges facing churches is providing a
comfortable, warm building in which to meet. The choice
of heating system affects its fabric, contents, congregation
and mission.
There is no universal answer but key to arriving at a
cost-effective solution that provides reasonable comfort is
to devote time and effort to understanding the needs of the
church. heating options can be baffling and the wrong
solution can be expensive and frustrating if it fails to
achieve the desired result.
a new guidance note has been produced by Church
Care. it contains advice whether you are considering
upgrading an existing system or installing a new one.
New Bishop of Manchester ‘comes home’
The Rt Revd David Walker has been
named as the next Bishop of Manchester.
He is currently Bishop of Dudley.
an experienced and highly regarded spiritual
leader, Bishop David said: “i feel honoured to
have been asked to be the next Bishop of
Manchester and delighted that i will have the
opportunity to give something back to the place
that gave me my start in life.
“i am looking forward to working with the
people and communities of what is one of the
most richly diverse places in the world. i also
believe the Christian faith and the Church of
england have a great contribution to make to
that richness and am thrilled at being given a
role that will allow me to be part of that.
“i ask the people of Manchester to hold me in
their prayers as i prepare to take up my new
role.”
Married to sue (they have two children)
Bishop David was ordained in 1983, and was
a priest in south Yorkshire for 17 years
before being made Bishop of Dudley.
Bishop David has spoken out publicly
about Government reforms affecting social
housing, asylum seekers and benefit cuts.
opposing the government's benefit changes
earlier this year the bishop said in a BBC
interview: “i can remember sitting up late at
night with my mother, who was a single parent,
trying to work out whether she could afford to
keep me at school past my o-levels.
“We just about made it. Benefits today are
getting worse and i'm not sure children in the
same position i was in would get the same
opportunities.
Visiting Manchester Cathedral on June 5
for the announcement of his appointment,
Bishop David met members of the anglican
community who described him as ‘an answer
to their prayers’
he said, “This is an incredible opportunity
3
to offer something back to the place that gave
me so much.
“My first priority will be to do lots of listening
- hear people's stories, understand
them and show them i'm a bishop who hears,
understands and reflects on what i hear.
Please keep me and sue in your prayers at
this time and do come and welcome us and
tell us your stories so we can share ours with
you.”
a diocesan spokesperson revealed: “Four
candidates were interviewed and Bishop David
emerged as the ideal choice.
“Following prayer and reflection it was
agreed to ask the Prime Minister to appoint him,
and we are delighted that he has agreed.”
Bishop David is expected to take up his new
role in December.
When Anglicans and Armenians met
Fr ian, Fr garegin, Archdeacon Mark and two Armenian deacons at St Chrysostom’s
When anglicans and armenians worshipped
together at st Chrysostom’s in a Vespers service
recently, Fr ian Gomersall of st Chrysostom’s
expressed his delight at this special ‘first’ in
Manchester and spoke of the friendship which
exists between st Chrysostom’s Church and holy
Trinity armenian Church on Upper Brook street.
The evening celebrated the life and writings of
the great 10th century armenian, st Gregory of
narek. Fr Garegin, armenian Primate for the UK,
gave an inspiring outline of the saint’s life and
teachings. some of Gregory’s prayers were chanted
by clergy of the armenian church.
archdeacon Mark was also present, as
diocesan ecumenical officer, and commented
on the special nature of the worship, and the
inspiring devotion expressed within it.
❐ st Clements, Chorlton was privileged to host
an evening with Bishop Thomas, Coptic orthodox
Bishop of el Qussia and Mair Diocese in Upper
egypt, during his recent visit to this country.
Bishop Thomas founded a retreat centre and
community in the delta region of egypt named
anafora. he was in the UK as guest of the charity
‘embrace the Middle east’ - formerly known as
Biblelands which in turn was perhaps best known
for its popular carol sheets used for generations.
speaking on the subject of Christianity in
egypt, Bishop Thomas provided clear insight into
the forces at work in the country, after a time of
great upheaval and push for deep-rooted change
during the ‘arab spring’.
identifying both actively conservative and
liberal currents, he said people of many faiths
and of none were involved in both movements
which seek the way forward for egypt.
Drawing upon the centrality of a gender-equal
society to his own perspective, Bishop Thomas
also stressed the importance of the Christian
community being confident in its own identity in
order to host and engage the complicated issues
now at work.
revd Daniel Burton, a former trustee of
embrace the Middle east, facilitated a Q&a
session, followed by a Middle eastern supper.
over £170 was raised to support projects in ‘the
lands of the Bible’.
Teen dreams at St Clements
We haVe been really encouraged at st
Clements, openshaw in the last six months by
starting a brand new youth group for 10-18 year
olds on a Thursday evening.
it began in october with a small number
whose families were linked to church but this has
grown to a wide variety of young people from
the community.
our teenagers are keen to invite their friends,
which has boosted numbers, but our minister also
mentions 3:6teen when visiting families about
baptisms or funerals and often they know a young
person who is pleased to be invited along.
each Thursday consists of an hour and a half
of fun, chat and hot chocolate, but the most
important part of each week is the ‘God slot’ in
which we look at the Bible together.
This has proved a great way of talking with
young people about their big questions in life and
helping them see that God’s word speaks into
their modern Manchester lives with a relevance
they often don’t expect.
We are building bridges week by week and we
are excited to be sending a small group on
CPas holidays over the summer.
The wider church family are incredibly
welcoming when our young people brave it on
Three scouts from 19th Prestwich (st
andrew’s, Carr Clough) group have received the
prestigious Chief scout’s Gold award. adil
Ghafoor, together with cousins Matthew and
Jacob saunders, all aged 13, were presented with
their awards at the group’s rainsough Brow
headquarters by scout Leader Claire hallam.
The awards, the culmination of six years hard
work, involved fitness training, community service,
bivouacking, first aid, performance arts,
camping skills, expeditions, survival training,
map reading, and understanding global issues.
scout Leader Claire hallam is very proud of
their achievement: “This award is testimony to
three scouts who have set an excellent example
5
a sunday morning, with some of them helping
on the welcome team or on the tea rota.
it is amazing to see some of the friendships
forming between some of the oldest members of
our congregation and the teenagers, as seen
(above) with hilda Bebe and Jeanette Bamber
with some of the 3:6teen grooup.
Youth work does seem to be helping the church
family to grow in our love and appreciation for
those at a different stage of life, and break down
some of the fear of young people that often exists
in the inner city. We’d value your prayers.
scout Unit. if you would like information on
Caring for ex-offenders
hoW would you feel if you were talking to a
new person in your church and they mentioned
that they had just been released from prison? if
we were being honest, i think most people would
say they might feel some unease or even a
degree of fear or suspicion.
Whatever their crimes, offenders are human
beings, loved by God as much as anyone else.
Prisons can be places where men and women
develop a genuine faith for the first time, or
where they return to their faith from the past.
Those who do often want to find a supportive
church to attend once they are released; settling
into a loving Christian community can enable
the ex-offender to grow in faith and reduce the
likelihood of them re-offending.
it can be daunting for an ex-offender to walk
into a strange church, not knowing how welcome
they might be - and churches can feel unsure of
how to deal with someone who has been inside.
That is why prison chaplaincies in Greater
Manchester are partnering with the Caring for exoffenders
organisation. They receive referrals
from prison chaplains and help match ex-offenders
with churches in their local area.
steve Dunn, elder at Beacon Church, herne
Bay, has this experience:
“We received a call from a prison chaplain
Riding Lights Roughshod Theatre Company
presents iWitness, a rip-roaring series of
sketches, stories and satirical swipes. Weighing
up the world with their new eye-opening show,
Roughshod is touring nationally, coming to
Pennington and Leigh - on Wednesday July 17
at Christ Church Pennington (Wn7 4HT) and
on Friday July 19 at Bedford Hall Methodist
Primary School, Breaston Avenue, Leigh
(Wn7 3dJ). Both shows start at 7.30pm.
Using a mix of powerful storytelling,
comedy and music, iWitness reports what
happens when unchanging truths collide
with modern myths. Five actors have come
who explained that an inmate had come to faith
in Jesus while in prison. our heart is that no one
is a lost cause as far as Jesus is concerned, and
through a series of meetings with the chaplain
and then the guy himself, he finally arrived,
‘hiding’ at the back on sundays.
“a second offence meant he spent another
year in prison. in preparing for his second
release, we knew we wanted to serve him even
better this time and got in touch with Caring for
ex-offenders.
“They were instrumental in helping secure
him a decent place to live, and in personal support
and encouragement for all of us involved.
They made all the difference and my good friend
is now a different man entirely, thanks to God
and the CFeo team. he's now involved in
church life, serving on sundays, knitted in to our
small group community, working on a voluntary
basis and looking for permanent paid work.”
CFeo is offering training in Manchester in
the autumn for churches who would be willing
to welcome an ex-offender into their community.
BISHOP DAVID’S INITIAL HOMECOMING REFLECT
Humbled for a reason
one of the proudest days of my mother's
life was when she was called upon to
carry her parish's Mothers’ Union banner
in procession at the Cathedral.
it is a great sadness to me that she
didn't live long enough to come again
with her Mothers’ Union branch from st
George's, Mossley, with me as the bishop
- though perhaps it's better for my humility;
there's only so much maternal pride that
any of us should be asked to live with!
This will certainly be a homecoming
for me. The Queen has nominated me to
be the next Bishop of Manchester- and i
am very much ‘of Manchester’. This is
the diocese where i was born, baptised,
brought up and where i went to school.
This is where i rebelled against my
Christian upbringing in my early teens,
and where i found a new and living faith
in Jesus Christ shortly before going off
to university.
i'm not a great one for family trees,
but such ancestors as i know of all came
from this part of the country.
i was raised on the tales of the
Peterloo massacre, the rochdale
Pioneers and the industrial revolution.
i’m not going to pretend that after 30
years away i understand Manchester as
well as those who have lived here
through that time - but Manchester has
always been in my blood and i can
guarantee to bring with me a passion to
serve its people and its Christian communities,
who after all served me
throughout my childhood.
i will come very much as a ‘Bishop
of Manchester’, but i will come to be
also a ‘Bishop with Manchester’. one of
the central aspects of my role will be to
journey alongside people of this diocese
in their joy and sorrow, and to listen very
hard to how life and faith appear to
them, to you.
one of the delights of Manchester as
a diocese is its sheer diversity. i look
forward to discovering more deeply the
riches of that diversity. as a young
trainee vicar i was sent by an experienced
priest simply to knock on all the
doors in a neighbourhood, say i was from
the church, and accept any welcome i
received.
i learned more and deepened my
Christian faith and my understanding of
the world from conversations with
Muslims and agnostics, housewives and
the housebound, than i would have from
years of theology lectures. and as i travel
with you i will relish the opportunities, as
i did back then, to share stories from my
own journey through life and faith.
and if you let me be a ‘Bishop with
Manchester’, then i would hope in time
to become a ‘Bishop for Manchester’; a
bishop who can be a voice for the people
and institutions of this region, one who
can articulate its hopes and aspirations as
well as, sometimes, its frustrations and
sadnesses.
The abiding priori
years of ordained min
things that make a pra
for the better. as a m
trained to recognise p
began to practice as a
how to recognise the
across numbers of pa
and then to make a re
impact at the political
level.
That is what led m
volunteer in the socia
ment. i know there w
here both for me and
build strong and effec
with others in order t
Manchester.
Today is simply a
future events. it will
before i will be able t
That will be the occa
to take my place in th
hence in the life of th
Manchester. But i kno
come i will find myse
others who are strivin
be ‘of’, ‘with’ and ‘fo
Together we will e
Tampere guests at Scargill retreat
sCarGiLL house, in Upper Wharfedale, was the
setting for a retreat for members of Manchester
Diocese and our linked Diocese of Tampere in
Finland.
We were 29 people in all, mostly clergy, mostly
still in active ministry, and for some of the Finns
this was their first visit to england - even so, the
Mancunians were greatly impressed by our
friends’ ability with the english language.
Bishop Chris was our leader and he spoke on
‘Leaders Learning to Listen’. Through his input,
through feedback and comments, and by listening
to one another in small groups, we learned and
experienced a great deal about listening to God,
the church, the world and ourselves.
But we did more than listen to Bishop Chris.
We shared in the life of the scargill community,
praying with them in the lovely chapel and eating
WOMEN BISHOPS: A VIGIL OF HOPE
in advance of the meeting of General Synod
this month, when new legislative proposals to
enable women to become bishops will be
debated, a prayer vigil will take place at
Sacred Trinity, Salford on July 3 at noon.
We will :
☛ affirm our one-ness in Christ, despite
together. also present, doing their own thing but
mingling with us at meal times, were all the
curates of Bradford Diocese - so there was quite a
buzz about the place.
The weather was lovely and many were able to
experience some of the beauties of Wharfedale on
foot. on one evening most of our group enjoyed
a pint or two of Timothy Taylor’s beer in one of
the Kettlewell pubs - fellowship of a different
kind!
at the end of our time together Marcia Wall
finished her spell as facilitator of the Tampere
Working Group. We thanked her for all she has
done in that post, and especially for the hard work
in organising this 48-hour retreat. and we looked
forward to the next time representatives of our
linked dioceses meet together.
Ralph Mallinson
our difference in relation to women bishops
☛ pray for the Church of england and
☛ rededicate ourselves to working
together to share the Gospel and further
everyone, lay and ordained, is welcome.

‘I loved coming to this church’
Cathedral Education Department on Tour 2013
The temporary closure of the
Cathedral building for major
renovation has created exciting
opportunities for educational
outreach with schools
and colleges throughout the
diocese.
The Cathedral education
Department has developed a
“Local Legends and sacred
spaces” activity Trail, offering
schools a taster of our learning
programme, in partnership with
five parish churches:
● St Ann’s, City Centre -
Mondays, until november
● Ashton Parish Church
(now concluded)
● St Mary’s, Prestwich - Mondays and
Tuesdays, until July 22
● Bolton Parish Church - Mondays, Tuesdays
and Wednesdays in october
● Rochdale Parish Church - Tuesdays and
Wednesdays in november
Pupils participating in the trail have the chance
to discover more about the church on their
doorstep, and consider its importance as a living
faith building of spiritual, cultural and historical
significance.
Pam elliott, education officer, explains, “To
ensure successful learning experiences for pupils
we have researched the stories of each church,
and found all sorts of fascinating facts, for
instance:
● at ashton Parish Church, young boys were
paid to find hedgehogs to help keep the
rushed floor bug free!
● The middle of ashton’s nave is dominated
by a Victorian three decker pulpit!
During the session, pupils undertake a factfinding
“i-spy” trail around the building, can
enjoy a chance to participate in art workshops,
learn about church symbols and seasons by dressing
up in vestments, and have the opportunity to
11
pray, reflect and ask questions.
The Prayer workshop features
prayer stations where
pupils may pray or contemplate
creatively. as well as
lighting candles, creating a
“count your blessings” mountain
and having the chance to
cast off things they are sorry
for in the “sorry bin”; pupils
write prayer-tweets of intercession,
ask for help in their own
lives and write or draw things
that amaze them.
some of the prayers written
in a recent workshop include:
dear god. Help my family
to get along better. Amen
i’m amazed by … butterflies, stars,
snowflakes, how old the world is …
so far, Pam has run sessions for 240 pupils at
st ann’s and st Michael and all angels, ashton.
Teachers commented that the activities were highly
appropriate and met or exceeded expectations.
Many local teachers had never before set foot
in ashton Parish Church (interior, pictured) and
were delighted with the experience, vowing to
come again with their families.
Pupils have been similarly thrilled by their visits,
enjoying the hands-on activities and the
opportunity to discover more about the churches
and their stories.
one 8-year-old visitor to ashton summed it
up: “i love coming to this church!”
Pam added, “My thanks, as ever, goes to the
education Department volunteers, who so kindly
give their time and skills to help the sessions to
run smoothly, and to the clergy and congregation
members who have given their time and expertise.
We are taking bookings now for the autumn
term at Bolton and Rochdale. Contact Pam at
Being alive to the
Holy Spirit within us
BISHOP GRAHAM outlines the fruits of such an encounter
We KnoW far more about the holy spirit than
we think we do.
have you found yourself looking at a sunset
or sunrise, or a wonderful view in the mountains
and lakes, and thinking, ‘This is so beautiful;
there must be a god’?
or have you found yourself in a cathedral or
church and thinking, ‘i am sure God is present
here’? have you paused to wonder how this
understanding was revealed to you?
have you ever had a sense that you must
telephone someone, text them or write to them,
and it has been just what they needed? Who
gave you that nudge? a great many people have
experiences like these, but we have never had
the right language to interpret them.
‘Breath’ and ‘Wind’
in the Bible languages, the word for spirit is
exactly the same as the word for breath and the
word for wind.
You cannot see the wind (or breath); you see
the trees moving. it is like that with the holy
spirit: we cannot see him; but we know his
effect. he is real power and movement, but
invisible.
The spirit shows us God in creation; he is
always going about his work to make God
known. sadly, as a culture, we are bankrupt in
our understanding of spiritual realities. That is
why the spirit is so foreign to people’s understanding
– that is, until we learn to see him
everywhere.
Best of all God’s gifts
according to Jesus, the holy spirit is the
very best of all God’s gifts: he is the God of all
goodness and love present with us. he is greatly
to be desired in our hearts and lives.
Jesus put it like this: ‘if a child asks his father
for an egg, will he give a scorpion? if you then,
who are evil, know how to give good gifts to
your children, how much more will the heavenly
Father give the holy spirit to those who ask
him.’ (Luke 11.13).
in other words, the heavenly Father gives
better than any earthly father, and the spirit is
more to be desired than any earthly gift.
But we have to ask; and to keep on asking. a
few verses earlier Jesus says : ‘ask and it will be
given you; search and you will find; knock and
the door shall be opened to you’. (11.9)
st. Paul urges his readers to ‘go on being
filled with the spirit’ (eph. 5.18), and not to
quench the spirit. (i Thess. 5.19).
it is clearly possible to spoil the spirit’s
presence in us our lives and even drive it away.
Spirit makes us like Christ
The effect of the spirit’s work in us is also to
make Jesus known to us, changing us so that we
become like him, and more like God our Father.
st. Paul describes this as the spirit changing
us from one degree of glory to another, to be
more like Jesus (2 Cor. 3.18). he also describes
this as like a tree bearing its fruit.
The fruits of the spirit in our lives are: ‘love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control’ (Gal. 5.22)
To show these virtues will give authenticity to
our hope that we are filled with the holy spirit.
The Rt Revd graham dow is an honorary
assistant bishop in the Manchester diocese
We cannot see the wind but we see the trees moving.
Similarly we cannot see the Holy Spirit but we know his effect.
He is real power and movement, yet invisible.

CRUX – Keeping you in touch
Howzat! A new perspective ...
oVer the last six weeks i have had a brilliant
experience working for the england Cricket Board
by acting as press box scorer for some of the
Champions Trophy tournament games. it was a
challenging role with a fair degree of pressure!
But it was also an unforgettable time and an
opportunity i will always be grateful to have had.
one of the privileges was an opportunity to
watch games from media centres at some of our
big cricket grounds, including edgbaston and
Cardiff - and the biggest thrill was being invited to
Lords for the first Test of the summer, watching
the game from the Lords media centre (right).
What a different game it was from up there! an
unrestricted view right across the ground gave me
a totally different understanding of the game.
Looking at something familiar from a new perspective
can have a notably energising effect –
which, among other things, can help in working
out of what it means to be good stewards. This
thought is what’s behind the ‘Best’ events we’re
planning in september - sharing ideas that other
hMrC has recently made a number of changes
to the administration of payrolls to ensure they
comply with the requirements of real Time
information (rTi). if your parish has a payroll you
will have received correspondence from hMrC
explaining this new requirement to provide monthly
payroll information electronically.
You should now still operate PaYe in the same
way but must submit the payroll information to
hMrC on or before the day you pay your employees.
if you operate PaYe, you will need to include
details of all employees you pay, including those
who earn below the national insurance lower
earnings limit (LeL), including casual workers.
although this started from april 6, hrMC has
allowed a transitional arrangement for employers
with fewer than 50 employees who pay people
weekly or more frequently, but only process payroll
monthly. Until october 5, these employers
may send information to hMrC by the date of
their regular payroll run but no later than the end
of the tax month. You will still need to submit this
online using payroll software.
13
churches have put into practice, seeing how others
have approached subjects that some have found
quite challenging.
The whole stewardship committee hopes there
will be much inspiration and many perspectives
which will have a really positive effect. To book a
place at the event in your archdeaconry, please
Parishes with payrolls : Real time information
When do i need to register with HMRC to
operate PAYe?
as soon as you first employ someone, you will
need to register as an employer with hMrC if
☛ The employee already has another job or
they receive a state, company or private pension.
☛ You pay them at or above the national
insurance LeL (for 2013/14 this is £109 per
week), or above the PaYe threshold (which is
higher than the LeL).
☛ You provide them with employee benefits.
if you have employees who are not already
registered for PaYe you will need to contact the
hMrC new employer helpline on 0300 200
3211 to do so.
hMrC provides its own software for use by
smaller organisations (Basic PaYe Tools) which
can be found online at http://dioce.se/BY3KYD
(this can only be used for up to nine employees).
asylum seekers and young people. it
provides an opportunity to meet with others
who are seeking to work out the call of the
gospel in challenging circumstances.
This year’s theme is Making Sense of the
Fragments, addressing the idea that we live
in a broken and compartmentalised society -
and our response as churches and other agencies
is often equally fragmented.
conference - a coming together to share
stories of churches, projects and people;
discover new ideas and resources; worship
together and reflect on ways forward in our
own situation.
it is for anyone lay or ordained, young or
old, who would like to make a difference and
believes it is done better together.
This year’s congress will include Tony
and great compassion for the poor.
