News
In June we started with a small collection of comics and we have had a great reaction
to this trial. We will gradually be building up our expertise and collection of comics
and graphic novels - so keep that feedback coming so we know what to stock. We
have featured some of the new releases on the back page of this newsletter to give
some idea of what we are stocking.
The Fifty Shades Of... series continues to dominate book sales nationally and
internationally. Last month the three titles in the series out-sold last years top 70
fiction titles combined! We are hoping this means more people out there are picking
up a book - and so for those excited by this series - and looking for the next ‘similar’
thing - we have two new releases this month to satisfy the new thirst for this type of
reading - check page 4 for details.
Congratulations to Anna Funder for
winning the 2012 Miles Franklin Award
for her debut novel “All That I Am”.
Funder’s book was selected by the
judges from a shortlist of five including
Blood by Tony Birch, Foal’s Bread by
Gillian Mears, Frank Moorhouse’s Cold
Light and Past the Shallows by Favel
Parrett.
Inspired by true events, All That I Am tells the story of an elderly Australian woman
and her role in the opposition to the Nazis in the years leading up to World War II.
And for now GOOD READING!
JULY BOOK OF THE MONTH
THE LONG EARTH
Terry Pratchett & Stephen Baxter
2015: Madison, Wisconsin. Junior cop Sally Jansson is
called out to the house of Willis Lynsey, a reclusive scientist,
for an animal-cruelty complaint: the man was seen forcing
a horse in through the door of his home. Inside there is no
horse.
But Sally finds a kind of home-made utility belt. She straps
this on - and ‘steps’ sideways into an America covered with
virgin forest. Willis came here with equipment and animals, meaning to explore and
colonise. And when Sally gets back, she finds Willis has put the secret of the belt on
the internet. The great migration has begun...
The Long Earth: our Earth is but one of a chain of parallel worlds, lying side by
side in a higher space of possibilities, each differing from its neighbours by a little
(or a lot): an infinite landscape of infinite possibilities. And the further away you
travel, the stranger the worlds get. The sun and moon always shine, the basic
laws of physics are the same. However, the chance events which have shaped our
particular version of Earth, such as the dinosaur-killer asteroid impact, might not
have happened and things may well have turned out rather differently. But only our
Earth hosts mankind...
ABOUT THE AUTHORs
Terry Pratchett: Sir Terence David John “Terry” Pratchett, OBE (born 28 April
and since his first Discworld novel (The Colour of Magic) was published in 1983, he
has written two books a year on average.
Stephen Baxter: Strongly influenced by SF pioneer H. G. Wells, Baxter has been
a distinguished Vice-President of the international H. G. Wells Society since 2006.
Earth”, with Terry Pratchett. In August, 2012, Baxter will release Doctor Who novel
INSURGENT
Veronica Roth
You loved “the Hunger Games”? Now you’ll love this.
In the divided society of the future, it is “faction before blood”.
Each of the five factions- Abnegation (the selfless), Candor
(the honest), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful),
and Erudite (the intelligent) is dedicated to cultivating a
particular personality trait in the hopes to build a “perfect
society”. At 16, Tris Prior must choose the one faction she belongs in. But what
if she doesn’t belong in just one? What is she is Divergent?
In this society of clear cut divisions, emerges complex Young Adult characters;
vibrant and tangible against their fictional landscape.
Tris is unflinching, fierce, and her developing romance compliments the
narrative without overwhelming it completely. Debuting as a New York times
BestSeller with her first book, and soaring up the list again with its sequel, Roth
has certainly made a splash in the world of YA dystopias.
“Insurgent,” just like “Divergent” which it follows, will have you up late at night,
quenching an insatiable thirst for more Veronica Roth.
THE SONG OF ACHILLIES
Madeline Miller
This year’s Orange Prize Winner is a wonderfully
imaginative piece of historical fiction that may have the
added benefit of encouraging a few more people, myself
included, to finally read the “Iliad”. Madeline Miller, a
Classics scholar and teacher, is certainly ambitious and
brave in taking the story of Achilles and Patroclus from Homer’s story and
expanding and updating it, turning the epic characters and events inwards into
a love story.
Achilles, demigod, greatest warrior of the Greeks, with a prophecy of doom
hanging over him, is a central character in Homer’s tale, but Patroclus, his
companion and lover, has a minor role and little backstory. Miller makes
Patroclus the centre of her story, and we get to see these two young men meet,
the often tragic events that shaped them, and “the never-ending ache of love
and sorrow” between them that is the heart of the story.
Miller has a real flair for emotion, and the sensuality, sense of yearning and
need for each other that the two main characters convey is skillfully written.
I also admired the deft way that the mythical and commonplace is blended
together; her characters speak of the Gods in such a matter-of-fact way that
when they do intervene, or a Goddess or centaur appears, it never jars, and
seems to fit in perfectly with the realism she otherwise strives for. Homeric
characters and stories underpin the whole canon of Western Literature but they
are ofter neglected and mis-remembered; a character like Achilles is so mythical
and iconic that it’s very difficult to imagine him as a real, breathing person with
passions and desires. The triumph of this novel is that the author makes us truly
care about these men and their love for each other, so that we feel the tragedy
when it finally comes.
THE AGE OF MIRACLES
Karen Thompson Walker
Luminous, haunting, unforgettable, The Age of Miracles is a
stunning fiction debut by a superb new writer, a story about
coming of age during extraordinary times, about people
going on with their lives in an era of profound uncertainty.
On a seemingly ordinary Saturday in a California suburb,
11-year-old Julia and her family awake to discover, along with the rest of the
world, that the rotation of the earth has suddenly begun to slow. The days and
nights grow longer and longer, gravity is affected, the environment is thrown
into disarray. Yet as she struggles to navigate an ever-shifting landscape, Julia
is also coping with the normal disasters of everyday life—the fissures in her
parents’ marriage, the loss of old friends, the hopeful anguish of first love, the
bizarre behavior of her grandfather who, convinced of a government conspiracy,
spends his days obsessively cataloging his possessions. As Julia adjusts to the
new normal, the slowing inevitably continues.
With spare, graceful prose and the emotional wisdom of a born storyteller,
Karen Thompson Walker has created a singular narrator in Julia, a resilient and
insightful young girl, and a moving portrait of family life set against the backdrop
of an utterly altered world.
Stunning #11 Pretty Little Liars
Sara Shepard
The 11th book in the Pretty Little Liars series “Stunning” was full of
what we’ve come to expect from Sara Shepard – intrigue, mystery
and scandal. Spencer, Hanna, Emily and Aria are still haunted by
the events of the past. Behind the perfectly manicured lawns of
Rosewood, Pennsylvania lurks the unidentified ‘A’ – who seems
to see all, know all, and has no qualms in blackmailing the girls, to
get them exactly where ‘A’ wants them.
Spencer is discovering the heights of college life, Emily is reuniting with an old flame
and Aria has stumbled upon a secret about Noel’s family that has the potential to
destroy their relationship. Meanwhile Hanna wants Mike back – and she’ll do anything
to get him, even if it means becoming more like A than she ever imagined...
Time is running out for the Pretty Little Liars with trouble lying in wait around every
corner, and it’ll only be a matter of time before their sordid past catches up to them –
unless A gets there first!
“Stunning” is a must read for fans of the Pretty Little Liars series, it’s a fast paced
read with unexpected twists and turns, as we get closer to the final instalment in the
series “Burned” due out in December.
(Who is already counting the days until “Burned” is released!!)
CANADA
Richard Ford
Fabled American life is a common theme in the literary sphere;
small-town America having been widely explored with innumerable
stories clobbered together of big characters and big happenings
in a relatively unremarkable place. Richard Ford’s latest all-
American novel Canada may start off just like this: initially set in
the town of Great Falls, Montana, and told from the perspective
of fifteen-year-old Dell Parsons of his parents’ bank robbery and subsequent arrest,
the novel expands beyond the usual confines of the small town and, rather inevitably,
crosses the border into Canada.
While we stay with Great Falls for almost half the novel, and get to know intimately
how Dell’s parents came to be criminals, they are comparatively small ideas once
Dell has left the country behind and is tucked away inside another unremarkable - this
time Canadian - small town. The novel is effectively two great stories overlapping
each other with Dell as the common denominator; he promises at the beginning of
the novel to ‘first... tell about the robbery [his] parents committed. Then the murders,
which happened later’ and it seems unlikely that such two major events could occur
to the same person.
Yet Ford cleverly allows Dell and his careful mind to pivot around the events, rather
than the other way round, and as we follow Dell into his late fifties, we see that the
change each event encouraged in him is a change he constantly reflects upon as
having lead him to where he presently stands and how it informed who he is as a
person. The novel, itself, constantly allows for change and is a spry and surprising
read, despite Dell’s frank admission of what is to come on the first page. Definitely a
worthwhile read and certainly a frontrunner for one of the best books of the year.
BATMAN THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
Bruce Jones & Sam Kieth
Quirky adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland have
entranced and befuddled literary fans over the years, from Frank
Beddor’s The Looking Glass Wars to Tim Burton’s ever popular
film Alice in Wonderland starring Johnny Depp and Helena
Bonham Carter. An enjoyable addition to the Batman cannon, DC
Comics’ graphic novel Batman Through the Looking Glass, written by Bruce Jones,
takes the reader on a journey combining fantasy, mystery, action, and psychoanalysis
with the familiarity of a Batman we all know and love. Gotham City is shaken by
the murder of politician Dunphrey Tweedle, and while our Hero strives to find the
truth behind the crime with the aid of Alice, the reader is left to wonder how much of
Batman’s journey is merely a hallucination.
Sam Keith’s artwork takes the childish edge off the original illustrations and has
layered them with a darkness that adult Lewis fans have come to recognise along the
trail of the White Rabbit. As backwards as the original tale, the reader can be assured
they will feel like Alice dining at the Mad Hatter’s table and crying ‘Twinkle Twinkle
Little Bat, Where on Earth was Batman at!?’
