COUNCIL MINUTES TUESDAY 20 DECEMBER 2011 CR11.168 NAMING OF BUILDING - PERRY LAKES HOCKEY PAVILION PURPOSE OF REPORT: To consider a request from the YMCA Coastal City Hockey Club to name the YMCC Hockey Clubrooms at Perry Lakes Reserve. BACKGROUND: A request has been received from the President of the YMCA Coastal City Hockey Club, seeking the Council's consent to name the YMCC Hockey clubrooms at Perry Lakes Reserve after long standing club members Dr Des and Mrs Pam Kelly. DETAILS: In support of the request, the President advises that:- "Des Kelly joined the YMCA Hockey Club in 1957 and he and his wife have continuously contributed to the club's development to this day. In 1958 he was a member of the club's top team which won promotion to the State's top division and the team has remained there ever since, celebrating 50 seasons at this level in 2008. This year, the top men's team was successful once again in winning the Grand Final. The club has been one of the most successful of any clubs participating in the top men's and women's divisions in the history of hockey in Western Australia. Des has been instrumental in guiding all the main phases of the development of the club as it grew as a fledgling force from its many locations including Langley Park, the Esplanade, Hollywood and to its present location at Perry Lakes in 1969. From 1957 to 1960 Des and other club members raised funds and physically constructed the club's first clubrooms, a modest building on the Hollywood grounds, the present site of the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Des was elected President from 1968 to 1970, during which he guided the forced relocation of the club to the present site. This was achieved with the assistance of the Perth City Council. Over many years Des played senior hockey, coached juniors, held many administrative positions within the club and became involved in veterans hockey for over 20 years. He was made a Life Member of the club in 1973. In 1985 he was involved in a major club effort to fund and build stage two of the Perry Lakes clubhouse, which has well served the members ever since. Over the years Des has achieved much in the hockey fraternity: Member of the Executive council of the WA Hockey Association for 10 years including the office of Vice President Member of the Organising Committee of the 1979 World Cup held at the Perth Hockey Stadium Member of the Organising Committee of the 1985 World Champions Trophy held in Perth Manager of the top YMCA men's team for a number of years in the 1980s, including 1985 when the team won all four major tournaments of the WA Hockey Association Granted Life Membership of the WA Hockey Association As President of the club in 1992/1993, he guided the amalgamation with the Coastal City Ladies Hockey Club to form the YMCA Coastal City Hockey Club, or YMCC for short.
