Raleigh Couple Claims $1 Million Powerball Ticket
- Mebane Man Wins $411,826 “Carolina Cash 5” Prize-
-$12 Million Mega Millions Ticket Remains Unclaimed-
RALEIGH – A Wake County couple had a million reasons to smile last Thursday as they checked their
Powerball numbers against those drawn the evening before. Raleigh residents Armando and Dolores
Campos, who work as drywall and paint contractors, matched all five white balls but not the Power Ball in
the June 2 drawing. Normally, this would amount to a prize of $200,000. Because a $2 Power Play ticket
was purchased, their prize is automatically multiplied to $1 million. The couple split the prize money, with
$500,000 going to Armando and $500,000 going to Dolores. The ticket was sold at the Fast & Friendly
Mart on Falls of Neuse Road.
“We couldn’t believe it,” said Armando. “I knew I had won something and I always Power Play. My wife
thought I was faking when I told her we had won the million.” The Campos family plans to use their
winnings, which amount to $676,226 after taxes, on becoming completely debt free.
In the Saturday, June 5 drawing, a total of 34,555 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes ranging
from $3 to $10,000 for a total payout in prizes of $281,376. One ticket matched four white balls and the
Power Ball and resulted in a prize of $10,000. The ticket was sold at Danny’s Exxon on Guilford College
Road in Greensboro. The jackpot for the Wednesday, June 9 Powerball drawing is estimated at $28
million if taken as an annuity or $14.7 million as a lump-sum payment.
Two tickets in the June 4 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing matched all five numbers drawn to split the
$823,652 prize.
Franklin Johnson, a truck driver from Mebane, won $411,826 as one of the winners of the top prize. He
decided to play “Cash 5” when he noticed that the prize had grown to more than $800,000. He had been
playing a particular set of numbers for over a month, which included digits from a series of birthdays and
anniversaries. Johnson and his wife watched the live drawing to see if their numbers were chosen that
night.
“I saw the numbers,” Johnson said. “I knew they were mine. My wife started to cry, ‘We did it. We got
it.’” Johnson plans to use his winnings, worth $280,042 after taxes, to purchase a new home, a new car
and take a fishing trip off the coast. The ticket was purchased at Food Mart on N.C. 119 North in

The second ticket, also worth $411,826, was sold at Steve’s One Shop on King Street in Hillsborough
and is unclaimed at this time. The top prize in the game had been rolling since the drawing held on May
22.
A total of 10,554 North Carolina players won prizes in the Friday, June 4 Mega Millions drawing, ranging
from $2 to $600 for a total payout in prizes of $78,442. Because no tickets won the jackpot on Friday,
the jackpot for the Tuesday, June 8 drawing is an estimated $26 million if taken as an annuity or $16.8
million if the lump-sum payment is chosen.
The North Carolina Education Lottery has paid out more than $5.5 million in instant scratch-off ticket
prizes since Thursday, June 3. “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $704,000. “Carolina Pick 4”
players have won more than $226,000 including 12 tickets that won the top prize of $5,000. “Carolina
Cash 5” players have won more than $1 million.
