Hello to my Kansas City Blues loving family, 

Wow here we are in April, and Spring is just around the corner. I’m sure 

everyone is just as ready as I am to get the cold weather and snow behind 

us. 

Saturday, April 30, will be our 4th annual Beyond The Blues fund raising 

event with Mental Health America of America. Once again it is being held 

at The Armacost Museum, in Grandview Missouri. This year’s entertainment 

will be Big Bill Morganfield, the son of the legendary Muddy Waters. Bill 

will be backed by our own Levee Town, and special guests. Tickets will be 

available at the door, or you can see me, as I will have some on my person. 

Would love to see you there, this is going to be a fun night. 

Speaking about local entertainment, have you heard our Blues In The 

Schools? The Unlimited Blues Band? These kids have been working 

very hard at their music. I was very impressed –they seem to be 

working as a unit, which makes for a unified group, and a great sound. We 

will be working on fund raising this summer, so we can send them to the 

IBC Challenge in Memphis next year, as our youth showcase band. Please 

check these kids out when you get the opportunity. These guys and gals really 

appreciate your support. 

Also I would like to give a big thanks to BIG DUDE’S MUSIC for their 

donation of a black Fender Strat guitar that we are raffling off. I will have 

local and national artists autographing the front and back of the guitar, 

making this a collectors item. 

I would also like to thank Knuckleheads Saloon, Danny’s Big Easy and The 

Hideout Bar and Grill for letting us sell our beads and memberships on Mardi 

Gras.

This month I am a little short on space but long on content 

so I will only hit the weekend gigs with honorable mentions 

to a couple of Thursdays. There are a lot of terrific shows 

and jams out there during the week. Check out the 

calendar. We have some great fundraisers to mention and 

lots of great shows. I hope there is going to be an outdoor 

show or two I am ready to thaw out.

Friday April 1st, There is nothing more fun than an old 

fool and this is the day for us. Frank at Knuckleheads 

Saloon is throwing an April Fools dance party with the 

rockin’, swinging, bluesy, rockabilly sounds of The Belairs, 

The Nace Brothers, Wildcat Daddies and the Hella GoGo 

Girls, a professional dance troupe that reminds me of the 

60’s…boy I loved those little white go-go boots. At BB’s 

Lawnside BBQ is the always terrific Studebaker John and 

the Hawks. John Grimaldi was born and raised on the 

Italian side of Chicago and started playing harmonica at the 

young age of 7. He took his nickname because of the love 

of a car he bought decades ago and still owns, a Studebaker 

Hawk. I also want to say a huge Happy Birthday fellow 

KCBS board member, membership diva and good girlfriend, 

Sara Elrod. 

Saturday April 2nd, Happy Birthday to our KC Blues 

Society member in Oxfordshire England, dear friend 

Charlie Monck who will be here in June and a Happy Birthday 

to John “Junebug” Sturke. His band Junebug and the 

Porchlights will be at Knuckleheads Saloon tonight 

along with the root rocker Web Wilder. Web is a native of 

Hattiesburg, Mississippi and has lived in Austin, Texas 

and Nashville, Tennessee. He will be inducted in to the 

Mississippi Music Hall of Fame later this year. Along with 

Web and Junebug is Rick Estrin. Rick plays harp in the 

PKCBs -april 2011∑ 

tradition of Sonny Boy Williamson 

and Little Walter. His song writing 

skills earned him three Grammy 

Nominations. Your ears and feet 

will thank you tonight. 

FUNdraiser Alert, Sunday April 

3rd, One of the best ticklers of the 

88’s is Big John Amaro. He is one 

of the most dedicated Kansas City 

Blues artists around although he 

and his wife Deb recently relocated to the Ozarks. Big John 

was front and center for Big John and the 39th St Blues 

Band for decades and the list of musicians that he has 

performed with is too long to list in this column but I will 

include his friend John Isom with Johnny I and the Receders. 

Together Johnny I and Big John perform as 2 Johnny’s on 

the Spot. Today at Knuckleheads Saloon beginning at 

2pm is a benefit for Big John Amaro. He has some health 

problems and like most musicians need a little love and 

support from the Blues Community. Musical guests include 

Miss Penelope, Loose Change, Bobby Smith, John Coakley, 

Johnny I and the Allstar Jam and Linda Shell’s Blues Thang 

with KC Kelsey. 

Friday April 8th, Last fall when Sarah and the Tall Boys 

were in town I wrote the following “At BB’s Lawnside 

BBQ are Sarah and the Tall Boys. If Johnny Cash and 

Bonnie Raitt had shared DNA the results would produce 

Sarah Potenza.” She liked what I wrote and uses it in her 

Bio on her website. Thanks Sarah. Tonight Sarah is back 

for another visit to BB’s Lawnside BBQ. At The Hideout 

Bar and Grill The Unlimited Blues Band is opening up for 

The Samantha Fish Blues Band. The Unlimited Blues Band 

has long time jam veteran Clayton Worley on lead guitar, 

Michael Aloysius Lefever on sax really gives the music some 

soulful funk, Kayla Brittany on bass pulls it all together, 

Sammy Sullenger on drums drives the music along and 

up front is Kayla Nicole on vocals with a voice way beyond 

her years. All members of The Unlimited Blues Band are 

in high school and are big supporters of the Blues in the 

School program. Samantha Fish has returned from another 

whirl around Europe with the Girls with Guitars Blues 

Caravan tour. So come out and catch her while you can. 

Saturday April 9th, Trampled Under Foot has a new CD, 

“Wrong Side of the Blues.” I was able to hear some tracks 

and an interview with Nick and Kris Schnebelen on a recent 

broadcast of Chuck Haddix’s Fish Fry on KCUR 89.3. It is a 

terrific CD and I suggest getting your copy ASAP. Tonight 

Trampled Under Foot is opening for Li’l Ed and the Blues 

Imperials at Knuckleheads Saloon. Born in Chicago on 

April 8, 1955, Ed grew up surrounded by the blues. He was 

playing guitar, then drums and bass, by the time he was 

12. Ed and his half-brother Pookie received lessons and 

support from their blues-playing uncle, J.B. Hutto. Did you 

know that Li’l Ed came up with the name The Imperials 

after watching a TV commercial about margarine? I am so 

glad it was Imperial because Li’l Ed and the Fleishmann’s 

doesn’t quite have the same ring. Come out and to 

congratulate Danielle on the new family member and to 

wish Lil Ed a Happy Birthday.

Benefit at BB’s Lawnside 

BBQ. I forgot how many years she has been doing this but 

it has been quite awhile. Mama Ray has a wonderful line up 

of special guests from the local Blues and Jazz community 

to help with this very worthy cause. Hope House provides 

comprehensive services and shelter to victims of domestic

Thursday April 14th, We have a new 

Business Partner, Freddy T’s in Olathe. 

Tonight the Kansas City Blues Society 

Meeting and Jam will be held there. 

The host band is Josh Vowell and the 

Rumble. This blues rocking band has gone to the International 

Blues Challenge two years in a row representing 

Topeka Blues Society and Wichita Blues Society. Come on 

out and find out what your KCBS has planned for the spring 

and summer. Then enjoy the music. 

Friday April 15th, At The Hideout Bar and Grill is 

Bobby Carson’s 11th Dimension. Bobby is a Kansas City 

born and raised guitar slinger. He found success in New 

York City in the 90’s and toured with Frankie Lee,

Popa Chubby and many others. He returned to Kansas City 

and had one of the most elite and premier gigs in town; 

playing guitar and singing lead with the famed “TD Pack 

Band” with the late and greatly missed Tony DiPardo at 

the KC Chiefs games. He also has performed with local 

legends, Linda Shell’s Blues Thang and Big Woody’s Blues 

Review. BB’s Lawnside BBQ has the Mary Bridget Davies 

Group. They have been real busy since winning 2nd place at 

the International Blues Challenge so I suggest you get their 

early. It will be a great time. 

FUNdraiser Alert Friday April 15th at Knuckleheads 

Saloon for The Kansas City Blues Society. It is a triple 

wammy with the 2010 IBC winner, Grady Champion along 

with Chicago great Nick Moss and the Fliptops. Also 

rounding out this great night is our own local international 

star, Samantha Fish and her Blues Band. 

Saturday April 16th, at Danny’s Big Easy is Coyote Bill… 

no more wild ones. The wonderful transplant from Chicago 

has the same great band but I heard that they have dropped 

the Wild Ones from the name, I wonder why since we all 

know that bass player Susan Barrett is as wild as a colt on 

the first day of spring. 

FUNdraiser Alert Thursday April 21st, The annual 

Groundhogs Day fundraiser for KKFI 90.1 FM Community 

Radio at BB’s Lawnside BBQ was snowed out by 

the annual blizzard of the decade in February. They 

rescheduled it for today which is National High Five Day. 

Junebug and the Porchlights will be providing the music. 

Come on out and support the radio station that supports 

our local musicians. 

Friday April 22nd, Gary “Alaska” Sloan and his Rhythm 

Review will be back at BB’s Lawnside BBQ, This great 

showman is joined by KC favorites Curt Rosy on bass, 

Mike Elrod on his smokin’ guitar and Mike Ronan on 

drums. Curt celebrates 11 years of keeping up with the high 

energy of Gary. Sloan will have you laughing, singing and 

dancing in your seat. This will be a “gasp, this is great” 

night at Knuckleheads Saloon with Gary Nicholson, Guitar 

Shorty and the Charles Walker Band. Gary Nicholson 

is a guitarist and singer/songwriter with over 350 songs 

recorded by a literal “Who’s Who” of the country, blues 

and rock music worlds. The blues list includes Marcia Ball, 

Tommy Castro, Deborah Coleman, Shemekia Copeland, BB 

King, Delbert McClinton, Buddy Guy, Etta James and many 

more. Guitar Shorty is long on talent and energy. He also 

was brother-in-law to a young 13 year old Jimi Hendrix and 

mentored him. The Charles Walker Band is a five piece soul 

band that performs various styles of funk, R&B and blues 

with precision and energy from Milwaukee, WI. 

Saturday April 23rd, BB’s Lawnside BBQ has 

Levee Town tonight. I do not know what I can say about 

this amazing quartet that you don’t already know but you 

have to listen to them with your heart and soul not just with 

your ears. They are always good but my favorite place to 

see them is at BB’s Lawnside BBQ. The 51% Blues Band 

is made up of local Kansas City blues veterans and will be 

at The Hideout Bar and Grill to work their magic tonight. 

You will recognize most of the guys from various jams from 

around town. The band leader is drummer Sticks Hardin, 

there is Mel on trumpet, Steve on sax, Turkeybone on harp 

and vocals, Dave on guitar, Jerry on bass. They have helped 

raise money and awareness for KKFI, the KC Zoo, cancer 

research, homeless pets and many others.

will be a laid back, relaxing, BBQ stuffed evening. There

April 30th, This is probably the biggest 

and best fundraiser of the year. 

The Kansas City Blues Society and 

the Mental Health Association of 

the Heartland has teamed up for this 

terrific night of music, food, dancing 

and classic cars. The venue is at 

the Armacost Car Museum which 

is a private car museum. The first 

year Jim and I went to this, he was 

gone for nearly 2 hours just looking 

at all the vintage vehicles. 

Music will be provided by Big Bill 

Morganfield and Levee Town. 

Big Bill Morganfield is the son of 

McKinley Morganfield who is known 

through out the world as Muddy 

Waters. He was born in Chicago and 

was raised up by the best of what 

Chicago had to offer although he 

did not take up the guitar until after 

the passing of his famous father. 

The Lindy Hop dancers will be here 

to show us how our grandparents 

used to swing and dance. This is 

always a memorable time. Seating

Coyote’s corner 

April? Yes! In the Blues world the month of April is 

known as “Muddy Waters Month”. Muddy Waters is 

the Godfather of electric Blues and the all-time King 

of the Blues in Chicago. He was born in April (the 4th 

to be precise, though experts debate whether it was in 

1915 or 1913) and he passed away in April (the 30th in 

1983). Sometimes Blues DJ’s on the radio will dedicate 

portions or even entire shows to Muddy Waters music 

for the whole month. Here in Kansas City I know BB’s 

Lawnside BBQ has a Muddy Waters celebration usually 

in the first weekend in April to commemorate his birth. 

I am sure they are doing it again this year. Last year 

I organized a Muddy Waters Tribute at the end of the 

month to memorialize his passing. My band and some 

of our good friends threw down at Tavern on Green on 

a Saturday afternoon and we had a good time. If you 

don’t recall that event I am not surprised. Apart from 

the musicians on hand there weren’t very many folks 

there. I started asking around to see if there was any 

interest in another Muddy tribute this year and to my 

surprise there was! Thursday night, April 28th, at the 

Hideout Bar & Grill in Gladstone we have put together a 

stellar lineup of musicians and musical acts. 

Since Muddy Waters was one of the legends of slide 

guitar, this year’s tribute will be a slide guitar showcase 

featuring my band, Blues preservationist Billy Beale, 

Molly Gene the One Woahman Band, and special guests 

Jason Vivone, Dave Hays, Paul Wilks and since you can’t 

play too much Muddy Waters music without harmonica 

we have Scottyboy Daniel on the bill too. 

There very well may be a few surprises 

thrown in too. Don’t miss this one. 

It will be a slider delight from start to 

finish with Muddy Waters songs thrown 

in along the way for good measure. Come 

on out. We look forward to seeing you! 

ON ANOTHER NOTE- I seem to get a 

lot of negative feedback from folks every 

time I mention Jazz- a Louisiana 

Kitchen. Well, the one at the Legends in 

Kansas City, Kansas anyway. It turns out people don’t 

like the location. I mean the Legends is a really busy 

shopping center. It makes parking difficult sometimes. 

I have heard people complain about the sound in the 

building. The sound bounces off the walls and is 

occasionally bass-heavy, while others complain that 

the bands play too quiet making it difficult to hear over 

the din of a packed house. I presume if any band is 

playing at a low volume it is likely they have been asked 

to turn down. THAT in itself is a complaint I hear from 

other musicians. The volume issue is a tricky one. 

The manager has told me before if they get one single 

complaint about the volume they will ask the band 

to turn down, which leads to many musician’s next 

complaint: people in the audience are there to eat and 

don’t really pay attention to the band. Some bands that 

gig there complain about having to lug their gear upstairs 

to the loft. They complain that they can’t see the crowd

and can’t put on a proper show. It’s 

just not as cool as the Jazz on 39th. 

It goes on. Well, I can tell you it ain’t 

all that bad. Come on people! You 

know what Jazz at the Legends is? 

It’s a venue that gives local musicians 

work! My band plays there all the 

time. If we get asked to turn the 

volume down we turn the volume 

down. It’s not brain surgery. In 

addition to us the list of bands and 

solo acts that play there is pretty 

impressive. Lonnie Ray, Rich Berry, Billy Ebeling, and 

others have all set up shop in the loft. And you know 

what else? They never ask bands to take a pay cut, they 

never blame the band for the venue having a bad night, 

and they pay the musical acts a set amount NOT a small 

amount plus a portion of the till or a percentage of the 

door. Considering some of the restaurant closings that 

have happened at the Legends earlier this year, I highly 

suggest that YOU the loyal and beloved Blues fan of 

Kansas City support this venue with your patronage. 

This is a venue where you can hear Kansas City Blues five 

nights a week from some of your favorite local bands. 

That is a good thing… right?

Josh vowell & the rumble to host KCBS

Josh Vowell & The Rumble is a four-piece 

progressive blues band that stormed onto the 

Topeka music scene in November, 2007. The 

band, comprised of Josh Vowell, who electrifies 

on lead guitar and vocals, M. Boyd Brown on bass, 

Justin “J” Shelton on the harp, and Dave Spritzer 

keeping the beat on drums, showcases a powerful 

combination of extensive musical experience and 

exceptional raw talent. With a string of individual 

successes with other bands paving their way, the 

group found their true calling through the sound 

and soul of the Blues. 

They have shared stages with Jonny Lang, 

Tab Benoit, Robert Randolph, Albert Cummings 

and Taz Cru and competed in the 2011 IBC Local 

& International Blues Challenge.

The Kansas City Blues Society would like our

Bringing the Groove by Bojohns 

I first ran into JD Summers at the Monday night 

jams at Doc Holiday’s a few years ago. There was 

always good jammers at that jam but one stood 

out from the rest. He was a young guitarist who 

could really belt out a blues tune with the best of 

them. His name was JD Summers. I soon ran into 

him at another jam where I found out that he also 

played keyboards. I was hooked. 

But I needed to see him do his thing with the band 

he was fronting at the time (The Groove Pilots) so I 

ventured the 50 miles to Edwardsville, Kansas one 

night to attend one of band’s jams. It was well 

worth the trip. Not only did I get to jam with some 

very good players that night and eat a couple of 

really good chili dogs, but I got to see JD in his own 

environment do what he does. I went from being a 

fan to being a die hard fan real quickly. 

In 2009 JD started his own band, The JD Summers 

Band. This is a very eclectic blues band that 

mix originals and covers of not only the Blues, but 

also R&B, Rock, and Funk. This is not surprising, 

JD lists his influences from such diverse artists as 

Alabama, Stevie Wonder, and Buddy Guy, to name 

a few. But just like I heard the first time I heard 

him, he takes everything he plays and sings and he 

puts his own distinct style to the music. 

The JD Summers Band’s current lineup has been 

tearing it up recently. JD says this lineup has 

“really come together as a group” and they have 

helped him “grow as a musician, as an artist”. 

Joining JD in the band is drummer Terrie Benson. 

Terrie came to KC in 2000 and has played with 

some notable bands like Penelope and the Unusual 

Suspects and Linda Shell’s Blues Thang. Before 

that she had toured Europe for a year with a rock 

band and toured one summer in the states with the 

Joanna Conner Band. Terrie drives the rhythm of 

the band with great timing as well as a great feel. 

William Dale III holds down the bottom on 

bass. He is a versatile bass player who brings a 

ton of energy to every song he plays. Dale has 

played with Millage Gilbert, Big Woody and the 

Frank Ace Blues Band. In his 40 plus year career 

he has shared the stage with such notable acts 

as Tom Petty, Rush, Rick Derringer, and many 

others. 

“Little” Gino Bueno plays sax in the band. Or 

just about any other instrument for that matter. 

Originally trained on piano Gino started playing 

sax in middle school. Shortly after that he started 

attending jams with his father’s band (Loose 

Change) where he started developing a style all his 

own because he didn’t want to sound like “every 

other horn player”. 

This lineup recently recorded a live CD/DVD that 

will be released later this month. You can pick it 

up at any of their shows and you can listen and 

view samples of it on the jdsband.com website. 

But when you go to see the JD Summers Band be 

prepared to tap your feet and/or get up and shake 

what you got, because this band brings the groove 

and they got soul to spare.

Billy D & The Hoodoos 

Something’s Wrong 

I found this an interesting CD, as 

it contains various styles of music. 

Almost all the songs are laced with 

seductive rhythms created by the 

drummer and bassist. Lead guitar work 

and vocals are not screaming in your 

ear, but tastefully done, making this a 

CD that you can just relax and enjoy. 

My favorite song is titled “Charlene” an 

upbeat Rock--a-Billy type shuffle. 

I would definitely suggest adding 

“Somethin’s Wrong” to your collection.
