Alas, I have come across a
much more enjoyable way
to get my kicks. Yes – I do
admit this with a slight pink
tinge… ok – a very pink
tinge to my cheeks… and
that is driving a MINI
Cooper S. Once you’ve
built a bridge over the “it’s
a girls car” and fiddled the
seat into the correct
position, you start to
appreciate the clever
German packaging.
My first MINI-affair was with
a standard S with 16”
wheels. It was raining while I
gently cruised home –
accepting that I would only
be able to start having fun
the next day… a few turns
away from the dealership
and a granny getting in the
way suddenly presented
the typical ‘get out of the
way dammit!’ manoeuvre
and a hard prod on the
accelerator later… it was
the beginning of the end.
Once the sweet 1.6 litre
unit gets up to around
3000 r/min and the
supercharger gathers some
gumption, you are
confronted with quite
simply the most sublime
sound on the planet…
supercharger whine!
Suddenly your Cooper S is
transformed from cutesy
pie honey hatch into a fire
breathing fiend. A few
swaps of the cogs and
you’re suddenly blurring
along the road at very
