On its first official run, Shaheen had an unfortunate episode which saw the programmed nitrous come in earlier than expected, whilst still under wheel spin, causing the rear to come around uncontrollably. The Lumina swung around stopped along the fencing centimetres away from the crowd. Two gals sustained minor injuries, but luckily nothing severe. The Lumina returned to the strip later on to set the second fastest speed of the day, on four wheels, claiming Class A honours with 227km/h. Kevin Burgess in his neat cabriolet BMW was fourth overall and second in Class A with a turbocharged 211km/h. Many people might have thought that Dawie Joubert's Ariel Atom was a Formula 1 car. Coupled to an awesome sound this pipe-car accelerated its way to 205km/h, claiming third place in Class A. Class B saw stiff competition with Johannes Pretorius' E28 M5 turbocharging its way down the (newly resurfaced) 800metres to clock the fastest speed on the day, on four wheels of 234km/h. w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a Roode and Class C's Aldo Viljoen had a wager down on whose mk1 golf would be quickest, with Rudy's twin turbo mk1 clocking 222km/h taking second in Class B, and Aldo's turquoise 20v turbo mk1 taking Class C first with 224km/h. These golfs not only accelerate fuggen fast, but put their power down too. Fadiel Hoosain's 325i turbo took third fastest in Class B coming in with 216km/h. Richard Bruhin in his Honda and John Block is his 20v golf took first and second in Class D with 191km/h and 182km/h respectively. Chris America took his Opel GSI down the 800m to clock a speed of 173km/h taking first in Class E. The bikes were slightly off previous records, but blisteringly fast none the less. Ebie “Flash” Abrahams did as his nick says, and the authorities holding the prolasers probably only saw a flash as he whizzed past the 800m at a speed of 273km/h on a Hayabusa with Achmat Israel similarly quick on his nitrous induced zx14 with 271km/h. Achmat reckons he ran out of nitrous on that run, (note to self, check the Nos bottle when going to Saldanha, LOL).
