Don't you just love the month of April? Lots of public holidays in South Africa and lots of
time to just chill. We’ve had such a relaxing month even though I had to work a weekend
away... at Urban RacR's expense of course (LOL). By now, we have a newly elected
president and speaking of new, WELCOME TO URBAN RACR ISSUE 7, South Africa's leading
online magazine showcasing Cape Town's fastest and sexiest cars.
In this issue we bring you the thrills and spills from Saldanha's top-end drags coupled to our
latest video production (it’s long, but well worth watching). We rushed to be the first to
bring you the photos of Streetmods, Cape Town's first “big” car show for the year. Crazy
Corsa Club invited us to their annual dyno day where there were more than just your
average suped-up Corsas. What a crazy day it was.
Our feature car in this issue is one that should please the ladies as well as the guys.
Shampie’s Mini could very well be Cape Town's sexiest Mini around. It's a full-house with
looks (even sexier than standard) and extra “S” power. And the ladies love it!
We've got hundreds of extra pics from events uploaded, so click on the links attached to
the articles to check it out.
That's about enough from me for now so go ahead, scroll down and read on...
CAR!
Can you remember the last
time you went go-karting? I
can, and it was horrible. After
about five laps, just as you’re
settling in – you realize that
your hands are struggling to
hold on to the steering wheel
and that the plastic tub –
excuse-for-a-chair is chewing
into your hips. A few laps more
and you’re starting to think
you’ve done a 24 hour stint at
Le-Mans.
PIX
Alas, I have come across a
much more enjoyable way
to get my kicks. Yes – I do
admit this with a slight pink
tinge… ok – a very pink
tinge to my cheeks… and
that is driving a MINI
Cooper S. Once you’ve
built a bridge over the “it’s
a girls car” and fiddled the
seat into the correct
position, you start to
appreciate the clever
German packaging.
My first MINI-affair was with
a standard S with 16”
wheels. It was raining while I
gently cruised home –
accepting that I would only
be able to start having fun
the next day… a few turns
away from the dealership
and a granny getting in the
way suddenly presented
the typical ‘get out of the
way dammit!’ manoeuvre
and a hard prod on the
accelerator later… it was
the beginning of the end.
Once the sweet 1.6 litre
unit gets up to around
3000 r/min and the
supercharger gathers some
gumption, you are
confronted with quite
simply the most sublime
sound on the planet…
supercharger whine!
Suddenly your Cooper S is
transformed from cutesy
pie honey hatch into a fire
breathing fiend. A few
swaps of the cogs and
you’re suddenly blurring
along the road at very
faster, more comfortable,
easier to drive and just
illegal speeds with
absolutely the biggest
smile smeared across your
gob that you could ever
imagine. I can tell you that
the next morning and a
brief trip to Killarney later – I
had a new love, other than
my wife. A MINI Cooper S
has one of the best sorted
chassis and suspensions
you can imagine and
having a wheel at each
corner – you’re faced with
a Go Kart. It is just a LOT
Now – how, you may ask,
can you improve on
perfection? I’m not sure,
but Shampie has, and here
I will tell you how. About a
month after buying his
Cooper S, Shampie started
improving on perfection.
No custom is complete
without some engine mods
and it is always rewarding
to know that yours is faster
than the next. Among the
mods are an Alta 15%
pulley on the supercharger;
a GIAC remap on the ECU
and a custom air filter.
These mods take care of
improving the power,
upping output to an
impressive 119kW’s ATW –
Nankang 215/35/18 rubber,
a sure way of improving
grip and composure albeit
at the sacrifice of ride
comfort. A standard S has
plenty go and more grip
than even an extra 100Hp
can ask for.
The product would not be
complete without some
visual clout – and believing
that OEM is best, Shampie
has opted for JCW front
and rear bumpers with
matching side skirts. Super
sexy centre pipes rounded
off on each side with some
meshing leaves the rear
with a menacing
demeanor. The front
bumper and side skirts give
a lower look and leave the
S hugging the road and
hunkering over the
gorgeously painted 18’s.
Impressively, all Shampie’s
mods have just removed
the ‘girliness’ of the Cooper.
The interior, being loaded
to the hilt with Harmon
Kardon ICE and Sat-Nav
proves to be more than
sufficient. Standard leather
The Crazy Corsa Club hosted its annual Dyno
Urban RacR Magazine was
invited to attend the event at
of the scent of burnt high
of kilowatt-churning, torquetwisting
cars on the rollers, you
know we would be there.
Turning into Goud Street
Awesome Colours, a name familiar to many
on the motoring and car show scene in Cape
Town hosted its annual Streetmods car show.
It certainly seems that the
Good Hope Centre has
become the venue of choice
when hosting the bigger car
shows. This could very well
have been the biggest Cape
Town car show of the year,
thus far, and considering it
was slap bang in the middle
of one of the many long
weekends we saw this April, it
was jam-packed with people
and activities alike.
Many have tried car shows
with a hive of activities, but
few have succeeded. As far
as I am concerned, Zabby
and his team pulled off one
extremely successful show.
There was some concern in the
last few days running up to the
event, as Mother Nature saw fit
to give us good showers. With
rain on Friday as well as
Saturday we feared that many
entrants would rather keep their
pride and joy nicely tucked
away in the garage at home
to remain cosy and dry.
stalls selling arts and crafts.
There was something for
everyone's taste, including a
fashion show of men's and
women's clothing.
All the big names in the
industry were pulled in to add
to the displays. One such
display, which was my favourite
We should not have been
concerned at all. From the
have-to-haves such as show 'n
shines' custom mods, hotrods
and classic cars, to Ready D
on the ones-and-twos with
2on2 B-Boy battles, a food
court and even flea market
for VERY obvious reasons,
included two new vehicles
from the Volkswagen stable,
the Scirocco and Golf 6. With
lines as seductive as the
curves on Angelina Jolie,
which one do I choose?
There were 1:10 drifters in the
basement along with the car
club displays. As always the
RC drifting drew lots of interest
and nice sized crowds.
As far as the car clubs are
concerned, it was kind of
funny to see how the forum
wars which normally rage on
the internet between the
different car clubs and
brands, took a back seat to
socialising and enjoyment.
I tried drifting a BMW upstairs, (I
have no idea what scale they
were) but they were foot
powered so we couldn't quite
get our angles right. Check my
editorial on page 5 for a pic.
It seems that 2009 is going to
be a good year with regard to
events, and everyone can
learn from these types of
successful shows.
Give the people what they
want and they will come in
their thousands!
ORLD’S DRIFT LEAGUES EXPLAINED
MSC
lesson#2
japan
Like D1SL, the MSC Challenge series is aimed at grassroots drifters. The MSC
series was actually a spin-off from the old BM Hai drift competitions that
were held by Battle Magazine. It was started by HKS works drifter and Super
GT Driver Nobuteru Tanaguchi aka N.O.B (No One Better) and Famed Super
GT, former D1GP Judge and Toyota Supra maniac Manabu “Max” Orido
from RS*R and Ridox. Many drivers can be seen competing in both D1SL
and MSC. One of the most exciting parts of MSC events are the triple class
competitions (my personal favourite) where three cars enter as a team and
are judged on their co-ordination while drifting (Team Burst and Team
Magician are 2 crews to look out for). MSC competitors are broken into
different classes depending on their performance. MSC also has a
relationship with Formula D in the US and the EDC in Europe.
Headmaster Takumi returns with yet another
effort to skool us drift noobs. This time he picks
up where he left off, that’s right - he showed
us the top three Japanese tourneys last
month and this month he expands our drift
universe beyond what we previously thought
existed. Go Takumi-san!
Started in 2004, Formula Drift is the biggest drifting series in the United States
by far. Drivers from all over the world are now competing in F.D. events
which are held all over the country. The number of factory-backed teams
competing in F.D. show just how big this series has become. Recently,
Formula D has expanded outside of the United States with events in
Singapore and Mexico. It now seems that Formula D is becoming a more
developed series than D1 as more and more drivers are heading to the
States to try their shot at the "American (drifting) dream" (haha!). F.D has
what is probably the most varied car roster of any drift series in the world.
The cars include everything from traditional Japanese imports to American
muscle cars and even a Porsche 911! (Hankook Tyres Porsche) Now the
K.D.M. (Korean Domestic Market) has jumped in as well by sponsoring Rhys
Millen a Hyundai Genesis Coupe to compete in this years Formula D events
and Time Attack events across America. F.D.'s events have been broadcast
on national television for a while now and the series' growth shows no signs
of stopping.
After Japan, its off to the
United States where drifting first began its worldwide spread in
Just Drift!
USA
. c o . z a
There are a number of amateur drift series in the United States and Just Drift!
is one of the most well known. Just Drift! events are held at the famous
Willow Springs International Raceway near Los Angeles and is the best place
to see Southern California's top privateers and up-and-coming drivers.
Grassroots events such as Just Drift! have been the launching points for
many of the drivers that fill the Formula D roster. Teams such as the VIOLENT
RUNNING TRIBE and RISKY DEVIL show up “en masse” at these events under
the blazing hot Cali Sun.
NOPI Drift
usa
A more recent addition to the American drifting scene is the NOPI drift series.
NOPI events are usually held on different types of courses to Formula D and
attract more privateer drivers. Last season there was some controversy over
the organization at some NOPI events and a few events have been
dropped from the schedule. As of recently, there have also been some
shakeups on the judging panel. Time will tell if the young NOPI series will be
able to overcome these troubles. I have a good friend, John Coetzee that
competes at the NOPI DRIFT Atlanta events in a Nissan 240SX that will be
sending us some photographs of the cars, gals and drift action as the
season goes on.
After Japan, its off the United States where drifting first began its
worldwide spread in popularity.
America's northern neighbour also has a vibrant drift scene where
Canadian drivers get to play with all the cool imported JDM cars
that are legal there. (sweeeeeeet)
European Drift Championship
The EDC is one of Europe's premiere drifting series and includes events held
throughout the United Kingdom and even in Poland. The EDC was originally
started by the D1GB team but it soon became its own independent series. It
is one of the fastest growing drift series in the world and I am constantly
amazed with the level of cars I see competing in this series. Like in many
other countries, a lot of the EDC competition cars were imported from
Japan secondhand. Although it is a UK series first and foremost, the EDC is
also becoming a popular choice for drivers outside of the area. If you
needed any proof of how big the EDC is getting, Japanese D1 stars from
the famed TEAM ORANGE, Kumakubo and Tanaka can now be seen
competing in the EDC in their Subaru GDB’s. Some people do say that the
entertainment side of the EDC can be a little too "straight" at times. EDC
action is broadcast across Europe on MotorsTV which is their equivalent of
Speed Channel in the States.
Europe has been experiencing tremendous drifting growth in the
past few years. There are several different competing European
drift series which are battling for the top position. So far no
dominant series has emerged and all of them seem to have their
strengths and weaknesses.
Drift Mania
canada
Drift Mania is one of Canada's biggest drift series. Originally established in
2004, the 2008 Drift Mania season included six events. Drift Mania also has a
strong relationship with its stateside neighbor, Formula D. Formula D judges
have been featured in the series and F.D. drivers Calvin Wan and Ross Petty
have recently been seen competing in Drift Mania events.
After Japan, its off the United States where drifting first began its
worldwide spread in popularity.
