Alternative Non-St<strong>and</strong>ard Racks (Art Racks, etc.)<br />

Design Summary<br />

Alternate parking devices may be approved by the <strong>City</strong>, but must<br />

meet the following criteria:<br />

• Support the bicycle frame at two points not only by the<br />

wheel<br />

• Accept a variety <strong>of</strong> bicycle sizes <strong>and</strong> styles including<br />

various types <strong>and</strong> sizes <strong>of</strong> frames, wheel sizes, <strong>and</strong> tire<br />

widths.<br />

• Allow for the use <strong>of</strong> a cable as well as a U-shaped lock<br />

• Allow for the frame <strong>and</strong> at least one wheel <strong>of</strong> the bicycle<br />

to be locked to the rack<br />

• Must be tall enough to be “seen” by pedestrians <strong>and</strong> the<br />

visually impaired yet not be monumental in comparison<br />

with the bicycles that will be parked at the device<br />

• Must be maintenance free or fabricated from materials<br />

which wear in an aesthetically pleasing manner<br />

• Must have simple rather than complex designs which<br />

allow the user to easily underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> utilize the rack.<br />

Moving parts are not acceptable or must be kept at a<br />

minimum<br />

• Must not require the user to lift the bicycle onto the<br />

parking device<br />

Discussion<br />

While the Inverted-U design is the accepted st<strong>and</strong>ard for bicycle<br />

parking in the public right-<strong>of</strong>-way, other rack designs may be<br />

accepted for use at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the city.<br />
