Preferred Width: 14’<br />
Minimum Design St<strong>and</strong>ard:<br />
12’ minimum width. If overcrossing has any scenic vistas<br />
additional width or belvederes should be provided to allow for<br />
stopped path users. A separate 5’ pedestrian area may be<br />
provided for facilities with high bicycle <strong>and</strong> pedestrian use.<br />
Height:<br />
10’ vertical clearance.<br />
Striping:<br />
Dashed centerline <strong>and</strong> shoulder striping should be used.<br />
Grade:<br />
Ramps should not exceed 5% grade.<br />
Discussion<br />
Overcrossings require a minimum <strong>of</strong> 17’ <strong>of</strong> vertical clearance to<br />
the roadway below versus a minimum elevation differential <strong>of</strong><br />
around 12’ for an undercrossing. This results in potentially greater<br />
elevation differences <strong>and</strong> longer ramps.<br />
