Easier than ever to manage
IBM DB2 Control Center provides a common
interface for managing DB2 databases on
different platforms, including Windows NT,
UNIX, IBM OS/2, and now, IBM OS/390 as
well. You can run DB2 commands using
SQL statements and execute DB2 utilities
against DB2 objects.
Written in Java, DB2 Control Center is
available as an application or an applet
and supports both Netscape and
Microsoft browsers. The Web browser
interface makes it easy to access and
manipulate database objects, whether
you have hundreds or tens of thousands
in your database environment. Additional
DB2 Control Center features include:
• A job scheduler, which allows you to
automate many database jobs.
• A convenient job log.
• SmartGuides, dialog boxes that guide you
step-by-step through the creation of database
objects and the execution of administrative
tasks. They also offer advice on
indexing and performance tuning.
• Tools to manage your replication strategy,
enabling you to register replication sources
and define replication subscriptions.
The Java-based Web control center lets you easily administer and manage data across
the DB2 Universal Database family.
Leverage your e-business
Use all your knowledge
resources
With its DB2 Extenders , DB2 Universal
Database can help you make use of all
types of data in your organization by
storing and managing multimedia
objects, such as text, images, video,
spatial and audio.
DB2 Extenders are a standard feature of
DB2 Universal Database. 2 Tightly
integrated into DB2, 3 the Extenders use
native DB2 services, improving multimedia
query performance.
DB2 supports multimedia objects on
Windows NT, OS/2, AS/400 and UNIX,
scaling all the way up to the largest
OS/390 parallel processing systems.
That’s important when you start storing
large objects in your database.
In addition, IBM partners offer a wide
variety of extenders—including spatial,
time series, currency, encryption and
optical. (For more information see
www.ibm.com/software/data/db2/
extenders.)
A new data type called DATALINK allows
you to protect the integrity of all your data
by referencing files that are stored outside
DB2, for example, in non-relational
databases. IBM DB2 Data Links Manager,
available on AIX, Windows NT and AS/400,
helps manage and control access to these
files through the DATALINK references.
Accommodate unique data types
If you need to support other types of
objects, DB2 allows you to create userdefined
types (UDTs), data types that
pertain to your particular application, and
user-defined functions (UDFs), which act
on these data types. You can store UDFs
on a central server for reuse in new
applications. In addition to saving
programming time, UDFs become a
business tool, ensuring consistent use of
data types and functions across applications
and enforcing business rules for
these data types across the enterprise.
2
Availability of third-party extenders varies by platform.
7
3
DB2 Spatial Extender is an optional feature of DB2 DataJoiner.

Capitalize on DB2 for both
business intelligence and OLTP
Are you using one type of database for
transaction processing and another for
your decision support applications? If so,
you may be struggling with compatibility
and portability or investing heavily in
acquiring new database skills.
DB2 Universal Database gives you
parallel processing power to support a
variety of business intelligence applications
with complex queries or very large
databases. At the same time, it enables
you to safely support thousands of users
in a high-volume online transaction
processing (OLTP) environment, with a
cost-based optimizer that is second to
none. It even rewrites queries automatically
for better performance.
Parallel query
DB2 Universal Database boosts query
throughput by:
• Breaking a single user query into smaller
parts, which are executed simultaneously
across a parallel processing system
• Rewriting the query, if necessary, for
optimal performance
• Automatically creating access plans for
parallel execution, so that data scans, joins,
sorts, data loads, index creation, indexed
access, backup and restore are all
performed on all processors simultaneously.
When operating on an S/390 Parallel
Enterprise Server or Intel/RISC SMP
systems, DB2 Universal Database
distributes query processing across
multiple processors that share access to
all of the data. On other cluster platforms,
DB2 can distribute function and data
across multiple processors or groups of
multiple processors, which process the
data individually, combining the results for
the final output.
“The advanced data types and Extender
packages in DB2 have enabled us to create
search engines and advanced data mining
applications. … These applications have
empowered some of our clients to win
multimillion dollar contracts.”
—Marshall Freiman, Vice President of Product
Development, Web Emporium
Power your e-business
The industry applauds DB2
In March 1999, GartnerGroup’s Dataquest said
IBM regained its No.1 ranking in the worldwide
database market: “Strong performance from
the IBM S/390 and AS/400 systems along
with dramatic growth for DB2 on UNIX and
Windows NT allowed IBM to recapture the
market lead.”—Carolyn DiCenzo, Director and
Principal Analyst, DataQuest
“This database update issues a strong
challenge to rival Oracle with a bevy of
additions and enhancements.”
—Maggie Biggs, InfoWorld, May 24, 1999
“DB2 is shaping up as a top performer at a
bottom-dollar price. Its admin tools are where
they should be, and it offers great multimedia
data handling and programmability—the two
weaknesses of Microsoft SQL Server.”
—Timothy Dyck, PC Magazine, August 1999
“It’s all good for DB2: new markets, new
platforms, better and simpler pricing. DB2 is a
formidable offering.”—Mitch Kramer, Patricia
