the show with his usual 

charming wit and humor and continues 

to attract singers from all over the

Tuesdays are absolutely electric at 

the Lakewood Oaktree Food & Drink 

Co. Singers of all sizes and shapes, 

talents and tones take to the stage 

with high hopes of advancing toward 

the finals event. Six weeks of qualifying 

will produce the top 12, two special 

performers will be chosen weekly to 

move on in the competition.

what he did, twice! First up, he sang 

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, and you 

know that brought the house down. 

Julie Rae got up there and performed 

Watch Me, before Nat sang 

Walking In Memphis, followed by Big 

Casino’s (that’s what they call him) 

Play That Funky Music, which got 

everybody’s toe tapping. 

Andrea chimed in with one of my 

faves, Stop and Stare, Brian sang Like 

A Stone, Robert brought the Country

“So You Want To Host For A Living”) 

KJ Lymes: Well, it doesn’t cost much to get into the business 

except for the music. We spend roughly $1,000 a month keeping 

our music updated and are constantly replacing equipment. 

If you don’t have a large selection of music then you will lose your 

crowd quickly to the next closest venue. 

If you buy the 500GB hard drive full of music on Craigslist, then 

you are breaking the law. SoundChoice, Chartbusters, and Sunfly (the 

three major karaoke producers) are actually spying on venues. Not 

only will you get in trouble for having illegal music, but the venues will 

be fined $750 per song. Yes, per song. 

So spending money on music is the hardest and best investment!

Signature Fires It Up

$1,000 karaoke 

contest kicked off 

with a bang on Sunday, June 13. The 

swanky little ‘L-shaped’ 

restaurant and bar at the 

foot of the Space Needle 

filled up quickly as the 

start time neared. Admittedly 

a little nervous 

about the success of their 

first contest, Signature’s 

co-owner Tony’s apprehensions 

were put to rest 

when every table filled Kelli qualifies 

up with anxious karaoke 

singers and their friends 

who came out to support. 

Suddenly the whole staff 

was running around to 

keep up with everybody’s 

orders and requests. Brian 

was fantastic behind 

the bar, and even BoJohn, 

Signature’s karaoke host 

was cool as can be, tuning James qualifies 

in singers to sound their 

best as they warmed up 

for the big contest to start 

shortly. 

Jerry, Shandra, and 

Aaron sat at the ready, 

front and center, with 

judging forms in front of 

them. They had a pretty 

good setup, given the space 

restrictions. The judges Anthony 

table was just inside the 

front door, where everyone 

who walked in could sign 

up and not be overlooked. 

Plus they had an unobstructed 

view of the stage 

set into the bay of plate 

glass windows jutting out 

into the busy sidewalk on 

Seattle’s 1st Avenue N. on 

Lower Queen Anne. Clay 

Spirits were high as 

Hayley, the first of 13 contestants 

signed up to compete, 

took the stage. Hayley’s 

Heartbreaker by Pat 

Benatar featured big leg 

kicks, lots of hip shakin’ 

and creative moves set 

the bar ultra-high for 

those to follow. She had 

the audience eating out of Haley 

her hand, resulting in a thunderous 

applause, whistles and cheering. The 

contest was off to a fabulous start! 

Signature’s spectators enjoyed 

a special Happy Hour menu of wellpriced 

appetizers and 

Brian crafted cocktails 

of every shape, size, color 

and flavor. The crowd 

was jazzed, especially 

after Hayley’s energetic 

performance. 

Next up, BoJohn introduced 

Rommel, who 

did a bang-up job on You 

Raised Me Up. Edwin 

followed up with Philadelphia 

Freedom, absolutely 

stunning! Robin 

sang Sweet Dreams with 

her own special flare, 

before Valerie, Seattle’s 

social butterfly, got up 

and struck a pose singing 

Last Dance. 

T he Sig n at u r e’s 

first karaoke contest had 

already produced some 

extremely talented prospects 

just within the first 

few contestants! This 

would be quite a ride. Top 

prize will be $500 cash 

to the best singer they 

can find. 

After donning a sexy, 

yet eclectic costume, Kelli-with-an-“I”, 

an accomplished 

host and singer 

herself, ignited the crowd 

with her sultry version of 

White Rabbit. The crowd 

went nuts. 

Clay, the resident 

stud, all dressed up, performed 

Travelin’ Band, 

complete with some gyrations 

and dance moves 

many of us had never 

seen before. He capped 

off his performance by 

diving onto both knees 

and arched back to get 

the most out of his final 

note. Anthony stepped 

up his game to suit the 

competition thusfar, singing 

Rebel Yell to absolute 

perfection and the crowd

Campaign Kickoff 

Karaoke was a major part of the 

fun for Tacoma's Street Fair honoring 

Connie Ladenburg's kick-off campaign 

for her neighborhood's 29th District's 

State Senate seat. Elli Joyner ran the 

equipment and those over 70 years old 

to under four participated. 

Kids of all ages, young and old sang karaoke 

Karaoke has 

come so far! 

The progression of the karaoke 

industry has been astounding. 

Originally, songs were on either an 

8-track or cassette tape. There was 

an audible beep at the start where the 

singer was to begin, and the words 

were written on a piece of paper. 

Then came the laser disk with 

the really cheesy video background, 

great for the explosion in popularity, 

but a back-breaker for those of us 

who had to lug the gear around. 

Today, it could be as easy as 

walking in with your laptop computer 

with tens of thousands of songs on 

your hard drive. Worst case scenario 

is that you have a crate of CD+G 

discs which are far lighter than the 

laser disks of old and a lot easier to 

cue up than the cassette tapes. Now, 

instead of one or two suppliers of 

songs, there are dozens if not hundreds 

of companies making karaoke 

discs almost simultaneously to when 

the song is released. 

Disc providers continue to improve 

the quality of the tracks and the 

machine manufacturers keep rolling 

out better players. The industry has 

come so far, What might the next 

great innovation be in karaoke?

I’ve enjoyed sharing my thoughts 

with you and hopefully, have encouraged 

at least one person to get up there 

and start singing. There is something 

so addictive about holding that microphone 

in your hand and singing 

a tune. And as far as addictions go, 

singing more can only be good. You 

grow as a singer, as a person, as 

someone who has lost their fear to face 

their fears (performing in public) - it’s 

just the tip of the iceberg in a personal 

growth experience.

Sirens Karaoke 

Meetup Group, 

established in 

April 2010, provides 

a unique, 

fun, “non-judgmental environment 

for anyone looking to have a new 

experience”. These girls are tons 

of fun and totally plugged in to the 

Seattle karaoke scene. 

Seattle socialites and karaoke 

fanatics, Kelli and Valerie have 

pulled their resources together to 

carry on a novel concept around the 

Seattle karaoke landscape; a meetup

be grabbing the songbook so they can 

pick their own songs. It’s so fun to 

watch and you can sit back and be 

proud and know that you played a part 

in helping them turn out great. 

Over the last year, I’ve dropped 

a few hints that may have made you 

connect the dots to my identity as your 

Mystery Writer. The mention of my 

hometown having 19 karaoke places to 

sing was a little hint. Right now, here 

in Renton, we have 23 shows. Do you 

know all the karaoke shows in your 

locale? I prefer to stick close to home 

for the late nights, especially with the 

alarm clock still waking me up at an 

ungodly hour. 

My honey, Chuck, and I LOVE to 

sing. My passion for this newfound 

hobby (okay, since 2006), has taken 

us down some interesting paths. We 

submitted a four-minute short movie 

in the 2009 Renton Film Frenzy, 

where we had 24 hours to film, edit, 

and submit a movie. We went to six 

shows that weekend, filmed over fifty 

singers, included 42 of them in our 

film. We didn’t win any prize but it 

group focused on visiting random 

karaoke hotspots around the Puget 

Sound and taking them by storm in 

numbers. Self-proclaimed karaoke 

connoisseurs, the Seattle Sirens are 

51 members strong and always looking 

to add members to their group.

I started keeping a list of places 

locally to go sing because we kept 

bumping into the same friendly crowd 

of people over and over again. When a 

new place opens up, we try to support 

their show and spread the word so they 

have a successful start. Of course, 

we can’t support all the shows. Some 

make it, some discontinue offering 

karaoke after a period of time where 

the incoming revenues just don’t justify 

the expense. 

Chuck and I have created a Web 

site with a weekly calendar for Renton 

shows and a list of a few shows outside 

Renton in the Seattle area that you 

may enjoy visiting. Check out Kara- 

okerenton.com for a listing of all the 

shows, addresses, and phone numbers 

of the places in Renton. If you have 

suggestions for other shows you’d like 

to see on the Web site, please send 

them to the email shown there for 

posting. Everyone knows that shows 

come and go, so anytime you head out 

for a destination, a quick call might 

keep you from being disappointed.

When you think of the Iditarod, 

you think of the Alaskan dog sled 

team race through the vast Alaskan 

tundra with musher, sled and dog 

team, you get the picture. Now reset 

to Portland, Oregon and picture a 

shopping cart as a "sled" and a six- 

Portland Urban Iditarod 2010

(at both stops). 

The Grand had a beer garden in 

its parking lot with a stage for karaoke 

and DJ dancing sets. After the event, 

the Grand hosted indoor dance parties 

both in its upstairs karaoke area 

and downstairs in its Salsa dance 

club, Andrea's Cha Cha Club. This 

"We're the first stop. It's Halloween 

and Mardi Gras in March with an 

Alaskan Iditarod theme. The thing 

that replaces the dogs is five guys pulling 

a chick to speed up the team. They 

are costumed and beverage’d out. We 

provide a beer stop and they are the 

entertainment, all 700 of them. The 

parking lot is never big enough and 

the five bar stations and 15 waitresses 

are overwhelmed for one hour. And at 

the end they come back for the karaoke 

and dance party until they drop. By 

that time there's only 300 left. And 

every year the costumes are better.

More and more people want in it, but 

it's limited to about 700 people". 

The Portland Urban Iditarod has 

been in existence since 2001 and the 

Grand Cafe has participated since 

2004. This year's Urban Iditarod took 

place on March 13, 2010. You can see 

more of the Portland Urban Iditarod 

by doing an Internet search. 

Urban Iditarod featured “weird” costumes, races, parades of people and crazy karaoke 

person "dog team", "mushing" barto-bar 

through downtown Portland. 

Mix in a combination of Mardi Gras 

and Halloween costumes and well, 

you can only imagine. Throw it all 

together and you have the Portland 

Urban Iditarod. 

All part of the ongoing 'Keep 

Portland Weird’ theme, some of the 

team names included; "Drinkers with 

a Kayaking Problem", "Reno 911", 

"Quest for Fire", "Ms. Pac Man" (a 

bunch of guys), and the "Cougar Den" 

(yes, middle aged women). The entire 

participation numbered upwards of 

750 team members. The route started 

under the Hawthorne Bridge and 

stopped at the Grand Cafe, Jupiter 

Hotel, Grand Central Bowl, Paddy's 

Bar, Barracuda and continued in a 

4 1/2 mile loop, ending at the Grand 

Cafe parking lot. The Grand Cafe was 

the first and last stop of the route and 

was the ONLY stop to offer karaoke 

writer served as Karaoke Host and 

Emcee in the parking lot and later, 

Dance DJ downstairs in the Cha Cha 

club until 10pm that night until DJ 

Sonero finally arrived. On the beer 

garden stage, DJ Luciano ran sound 

and dance sets. 

For the after-event party upstairs, 

the lovely KJ Krystina ran 

dance sets and 

regular karaoke 

until 2am 

in the morning.

Do you or have you sung in any groups/ 

bands? I did a couple of times. 

Ever sung professionally? Everytime I host 

karaoke. I get paid to do it and I sing. 

What’s the largest crowd that you have sung 

in front of? About 600 or so at Rickets 

Review in Roseburg, OR. 

Do you enjoy karaoke contests? I like 

watching them. I've never entered one 

though. 

Beverage of choice? Beer or Coffee. 

What’s the nicest thing you’ve ever done for 

a stranger? Fed them. 

What do you enjoy about karaoke? I always 

wanted to be able to sing songs I liked. 

With Karaoke I don't have to learn to 

play it on the guitar and can have a 

whole band behind me. 

Is there anything you dislike about karaoke? 

It doesn't get the respect it should. 

If you could improve the karaoke industry, 

what would you do? I would like to give 

karaoke better press and make it legal 

to broadcast karaoke singers singing. 

What’s unique or special about your karaoke 

show? At my karaoke show I don't 

use background music to fill the air 

between singers. I think the singers 

should get all the attention. I use jokes 

and announcements to fill the air. I 

try to focus on singing and laughter. I 

want it to be as fun as possible. 

Why should we come to your show? If you 

like to sing, laugh and have fun... why 

go anywhere else? 

Like to say anything to our readers? Sing 

all you can. Put out the effort to let the 

audience hear it. Don't be shy. Everyone, 

including you will enjoy it more. 

It helps keep you healthy and it's one 

thing you can do that is like standing 

outside, screaming at the top of your 

lungs without taking a chance on getting 

arrested or locked in a padded 

room somewhere. Fill your lungs and 

let it flow! Above all... HAVE FUN!

has been brought to 

my attention by several 

local bar owners 

that they're frustrated 

over certain karaoke 

singers who they 

feel take advantage of the fact 

that they pay for entertainment, 

yet choose not to contribute anything 

to the bar. They’ve asked 

that we help to make our readers 

aware of the fact that even though 

you don't have to pay for the karaoke, 

they do. Even if you don't 

drink alcohol when you come in 

for karaoke, the bars would very 

much appreciate that you order 

something to help them offset the 

cost of the entertainment. Some 

bar owners have even discussed 

implementing a minimum purchase 

policy during their karaoke 

shows, like they do for live band 

nights. However, they are still 

unsure about how to enforce such 

a thing and how it would affect 

their customer base. 

If you visit a karaoke bar, 

please do your part and support 

that location. Order up a soda, 

maybe a meal or just some french 

fries, play some pool, darts, or 

pulltabs while you're there. Sing 

karaoke, but remember it's a paid 

service, and we've all got to do our 

part to help keep it going! 

Don't be considered a karaoke 

freeloader! People do talk, so 

please, if you care, then listen up! 

We've even heard of some 

singers who come in, order water 

and ask for free popcorn or 

chips and salsa. Come on people! 

Please, help support karaoke in 

our community so we can keep 

it around and FREE for many 

years to come.

a Ravonna sighting at 

Johnny’s of Fife, where she is alive 

and well, and smiling as usual. 

Ravonna recently took over the 

karaoke host position at Johnny’s and

Wendy, known for her enthusiastic 

performances, was an ex-singer of 

Johnny’s, now back for Ravonna’s show. 

She and Ron are true karaoke fans, 

with their own CD collections sprawled 

out in front of them on the table. Judy 

came out with Wendy and Ron for an 

evening of singing as well. 

Ravonna sets her equipment up 

on a couple of unpretentious tables 

toward the entrance to the bar. The big 

podium is gone, it’s just Ravonna in all 

her glory, serving the singing masses 

at Johnny’s. She ambles around the 

room after locking in the singer, to 

touch base with her friends and customers. 

She absolutely loves her new 

gig and the room as a whole for karaoke 

and as a comfortable, relaxing 

hangout for her karaoke faithfuls. 

The people are great and the 

singers are awesome! Kin came down 

with Arlene and John, up from California, 

to sing karaoke and let me just 

say, “Wow”! He sounded incredible!

Skagit County kicks off the NW fairs & festivals season

June brings the end of school and 

the beginning of summer but also the 

start of the fairs and festivals season 

that is a tradition for many families 

across the great Northwest. Friday, 

June 18th, Skagit County kicked off 

it's season with the 73rd Annual Berry 

Dairy Days Festival in Burlington featuring 

10k & 2-mile Road Runs, a halfmarathon 

race, a parade, fireworks, a 

car show, lots of great food including 

the annual Kiwanis BBQ, activities 

for the kids including bouncy houses, 

live entertainment and or course... 

strawberry shortcake! 

This year more than 3,000 people, 

both locals and many out-oftowners, 

filled Skagit river park for 

the Firecracker Soccer Tournament 

sponsored by Sims Honda. The tournament 

which ran from the 18th to the 

20th consisted of 255 teams with three 

levels of play including premier, select 

and competitive and age divisions for 

girls and boys U11-U19. The final 

standings for the tournament can be

The fun continued as the Buckaroo 

Blues Band entertained for the 8th 

consecutive year prior to the annual 

fireworks show. Spectators lined up 

to watch the band featuring "Teddy 

Bear Cloer" and "Darren - The Big 

Guy - Wayne" on lead guitar, "Pat- 

Man Tennis" on pedal steel guitar, 

"Country-Mo Hargrove" on Drums 

and "Funky-Roger Grover" on bass. 

The band also brought with them 

special guest singer "Flo - KMPS 

Traffic-Maven - Cloer". Playing a mix 

of Top-40 Country and Classic Rock 

& Pop their song selections pleased 

all crowd goers, young and old and 

had many on their feet dancing in the 

grass as they awaited the fireworks 

display which was went off around 10 

pm with a patriotic soundtrack that 

left everyone in awe. 

Next up will be the 76th Annual 

Loggerodeo, which is one of the longest 

running 4th of July Celebrations in 

the United States, June 30th through 

July 4th. Loggerodeo includes chainsaw 

carving competitions, a grand 

parade and kiddie parade, carnival, 

live entertainment, many food vendors, 

the old time logging show, foot 

race, firefighters muster, SW Museum 

Displays, performances by the "Wild 

Women of Woolley", bluegrass jamboree, 

live rodeo, fireworks a street

would be chosen to 

advance, when surely five 

or six of them were worthy 

of taking the top prize – all 

within the very first night! 

For the opening night, it 

was announced that Kelli 

and James would be advancing 

into the finals. 

Just an all-around 

fabulous night of entertainment 

at the Signature.

Live Band Karaoke: 

An Uncanny Rockstar Experience

Many karaoke enthusiasts seek 

to taste the rockstar moment. They 

go for the stage (sometimes), the 

lights (sometimes), the cheering crowd 

(sometimes) and the thumping music 

and the energy of band mates backing 

their powerful vocals... (never). Standard 

karaoke can't provide the FULL 

rockstar moment because even with 

the best system, it is still just one lone 

singer on stage with a microphone and 

recorded music to back them. Some 

karaoke enthusiasts desire something 

more, something more robust in our 

karaoke experience. Luckily, this 

"something more" is available now 

with the sweeping sensation called 

LIVE BAND KARAOKE. 

While some karaoke bars have 

begun adding live band karaoke into 

their mix of traditional karaoke, some 

other venues, formerly opposed to karaoke, 

have welcomed this live version 

and have been pleasantly surprised by 

the turnout and the feedback from their 

non-karaoke regulars. One such live 

band entering the karaoke world is The 

Uncanny Valley performing primarily 

in the Whatcom County area bars as 

well as private parties and weddings. 

Dave Lyon, the Uncanny Valley’s 

bassist and self-proclaimed “karaoke 

whore,” says the band got together 

because they knew a bunch of songs 

but, “none of us really sing much so a 

cover band was out.” Dave says of the 

band’s name, “ ‘the uncanny valley’ is 

a term referring to something (usually 

computer animation) that very 

closely resembles a human but never 

quite gets there-sort of what we do 

with music.” 

The Uncanny Valley is made up of 

four talented musicians with decades 

of experience between them, who 

have come together to create a fun, 

professional, and incredibly polished 

sounding band ready to back any 

singer who wishes to give it a try. A 

recent performance at Bellingham's 

Chuckanut Brewery on Holly Street 

was in front of a packed house. The 

audience filled every seat and many 

more stood along the outside watching. 

The music cranked up and as singer 

Shelly Lyon began "Total Eclipse of 

the Heart,” people began craning to 

get a view of the band and the singer. 

Most didn’t even realize it was karaoke 

at first. 

Midway through the show, the 

band announced to the crowd "if 

there’s a song you'd like to sing and 

we don't have it on our list, write it 

down, bring it up and we will learn it 

by our next performance!" 

With great musical skills, super 

sweet sound and their willingness 

to build their song list based on the 

wants and needs of their audience, 

The Uncanny Valley is gathering 

quite a following of singers and even 

fans who come just to appreciate the 

music. In fact, the show was such a 

success that the Chuckanut Brewery, 

Uncanny Village performs for an enthusiastic Bellingham audience 

which had never offered karaoke before, 

signed The Uncanny Valley for 

another show later this summer.

and intimate group of singers. Each 

attending finalist had been handchosen 

over the past couple months 

and included in order of appearance,

and Robbie Taylor. 

What a great group of people 

gathered together in the name of karaoke. 

The industry experience in that

Everyone at Barlee’s Wednesday 

night show is friendly and easy to talk 

to. The setting is their banquet room 

in the back of the restaurant, full of 

booth seating, but most of the core 

group pull all the tables together and 

share a twenty-foot long table down 

the middle of the room. 

So Frank has the finalists geared 

up to sing in two rounds. The Series 

had been touted as featured songs 

from the 40s to the 70s. We popped in 

a week earlier and caught Hal and Sue 

Sawyer judging with Tonette Beach. 

What a great showcase of those oldies, 

truly a trip down memory lane.

Way, Laurie’s Crying Shame and All 

I Know, Kim’s When It Rains I Pour 

and You Know I’m Gonna Getcha, 

Ron Roy’s No One Stands Alone and 

Marguerita, Fred’s The Little White 

Cloud That Cried and Portrait Of My 

Love, and Robbie’s Faded Love and 

Blue Bayou were all enjoyable. We 

were anxious to find out who would 

win, but we’d have to wait a week for 

the results after the final sing off like 

everyone else. 

The results are in! The Champion 

was finally announced! Congratulations 

to the most awesome Kim Donelson! 

Robbie Taylor came in a close 2nd 

place, and Jeff Sawyer snagged 3rd 

place for his performance. 

“We had a great contest finish 

with all singers singing beautifully 

in the last of the three final events”, 

according to Frank. 

“Mr. Neal Prasad and Ben Sharma, 

owner's of Barlee's Restaurant, 

enthusiastically sponsored this fine 

karaoke contest. Neal Prasad presented 

the winners with their prize money 

and thanked those who participated in 

this event”, he continued. 

Frank seems to be loving his 

new gig at Barlee’s. The room enjoys 

a dedicated server in Kelly, she’s excellent 

at seeing to everyone’s needs. 

The karaoke sounds just a bit sweeter 

because of her alone. 

You know the food is great and 

the selection is endless. 

Newcomers are swept up by the 

intimacy of the group. Michelle is a 

drummer and works in the health care 

industry. She starts her Wednesdays 

around 7pm at Barlee’s karaoke and 

wants to learn to sing too. Michelle 

had very nice things to say about the 

other singers when she finally got up 

to the mic a couple times.

hilarious performance had the whole 

room in tears. 

Everyone was thrilling to watch 

and listen to. Each contestant brought 

something special to the stage that 

night much to the delight of a very 

enthusiastic audience, now gathering 

around the stage in anticipation. 

John and Tristan the bar manager 

acted as judges for the night. And 

after some deliberating, it was announced 

that Tina’s (the man) fun and 

animated performance had earned him 

a perfect score and an easy first place

melting the hearts of everyone in the 

room. She’s got an incredible gift. 

Andrea was quickly named the winner 

and was promised a place in the 

finals event along with Tina and many 

more yet to be named. 

The Oaktree in Lakewood is one 

of the neighborhood’s most popular 

karaoke hot spots, one worth checking 

out for sure. The contest runs 

every Tuesday and starts around 

10pm. Chris has a whole lot of songs 

to choose from and strangely enough, 

no books. Instead of songbooks at 

every table, he’s got a nifty computer

is your favorite and least favorite 

thing about karaoke?” Here are a 

couple of your responses. Enjoy! 

Dawn Johnson says, "My favorite 

thing (about karaoke) is that I have 

really made some great friends in this 

short time I’ve been singing. Thank 

you to everyone for accepting me!" 

A little about Dawn; she started 

singing at The Skagit a little over a 

year ago. She had never sung karaoke 

before and was a little intimidated at 

first. She got up there and gave it a 

try and has been a fan ever since. She 

even won a home karaoke system from 

The Skagit's last big iPod iKaraoke 

contest and has expanded her karaoke 

world to Myspace karaoke and to a 

couple of other local venues as well. 

Melisa Nelson says, "I LOVE the 

family I've made. I dislike haters." 

Melisa always brings a group of 

karaoke singers with her and is so 

encouraging to everyone! She doesn't 

think she's that great of a singer, but 

she gets up there anyhow and tries 

some of the coolest songs in the book.

O’Finnigan’s is a fantastic hangout 

with folks of all ages and musical 

tastes. You’ll feel like a rock star once 

the host cranks up the volume, fires up 

the fog machine, and turns you loose 

on the microphone. 

She's a chance taker and rarely ever 

sings a song more than once. That 

takes courage! 

Shane Maroney added, "I started 

running karaoke (at Big Rock) last 

summer and its been a hit. Minors 

are welcome to come sing until around 

10pm. And when the weather is nice, 

I run karaoke out in the covered area 

of the beer garden, which is open to 

the inside." 

Shane must be loving the karaoke 

life! We've known Shane for years. 

Rocky and I taught him everything 

he knows about hosting. You can find 

Shane at Big Rock in Mount Vernon, 

hosting karaoke with a great big smile 

and a pretty darn good voice too. 

Rocky loves that karaoke gives 

people the opportunity to come out of 

their shell, and when they think that 

they can't sing very well and find out 

that they can, it's priceless. It gives 

people confidence. 

I personally love that karaoke 

brings together so many people from 

so many different backgrounds and 

everyone is equal on the playing field. 

You can be a rocket scientist, or a 

walmart employee, a homemaker, a 

cartoonist, or anything else but yet 

you can relate to everyone in the room 

and become friends who appreciate 

each other! 

So not a lot of negativity here, just 

a lot of karaoke love. It's wonderful 

to hear from other people their perspectives 

on things and I appreciate 

everyone's input.
