Bethany Christian Schools
2010-11 Annual Report
Principal’s Report
—Allan Dueck
In 2010-11 Bethany focused new
directions in academic programming,
nurturing faith in students,
and understanding the value of
Anabaptist-Mennonite education.
Academic programming
Bethany’s mission statement describes the school
as a “dynamic learning community.” That dynamic
quality was apparent during extended faculty meetings
as teachers collaborated to enhance students’
learning based on data such as test results and
performance in classes, used data to systematically
identify areas for students to improve, developed
plans to enable them to do so, and then reevaluated
students’ learning to assess growth.
Bethany also substantially increased dual-credit
and Advanced Placement course offerings. Juniors
and seniors can now take a total of four AP courses
and seven dual-credit courses through Bluffton University
and Goshen College. Offered in heterogeneous
classes, these courses demonstrate Bethany’s
continuing commitment to diversity while providing
top-flight preparation for that large majority of
Bethany students planning to attend college.
Faith development
A committee of three Bethany faculty members
and three community persons, two pastors and
a Goshen College Bible professor, completed a
comprehensive review of Bethany’s Bible program.
Along with strong affirmation of the current Bible
program, the committee also suggested areas for
growth—such as finding new ways to partner with
congregations in Christian nurture.
Value of Anabaptist-Mennonite education
Utilizing as a tool John D. Roth’s stimulating
new book, Teaching That Transforms: Why Anabaptist-
Mennonite Education Matters (MPN, 2011), the faculty
and board engaged in spirited discussions about the
unique blend of faith and learning at Bethany—
the nature of Mennonite pedagogy, the distinctive
culture of our school, and the qualities of dedicated
and accomplished teachers. This reflective conversation
energized us as Christian educators.
A Word from the Board Chair
—Jaime Alvarez
Let me share several highlights from
2010-11.
In the wake of the recession,
Bethany’s administration and board
focused on finding entrepreneurial strategies to build
enrollment and strengthen the balance sheet. To
support student recruitment, we introduced financial
incentives such as a discount for pastors’ children
and merit-based scholarships. From the success of
the UB Bruin Club, a monthly gathering of elementary
children, came parents’ call to introduce fourth
and fifth grades. Based on that call we decided
to implement a two-year pilot program while, on
another front, we introduced daily bus service from
Elkhart. These initiatives generated interest among
prospective students.
Sometimes developments from the outside impact
our school. Such was the case this year as Indiana’s
legislature enacted the momentous Choice Scholarship
Program, which promised funding towards
tuition in non-public schools for low and middleincome
families new to such schools. This program
increased Bethany’s capacity to serve all interested
students, no matter what the family income.
Also last year we laid the foundation for a capital
campaign to strengthen Bethany’s long-term sustainability.
Interest clustered in three areas: funding to
reduce energy consumption and perhaps introduce
alternative energy, endowment for tuition assistance
and facilities upkeep, and enhancement of technology
education to equip students for college and
work in the 21st century. At year’s end we formed
a school-constituency committee to prepare for a
feasibility study.
On behalf of everyone at Bethany, I thank you for
your ongoing support of Christian education at
Bethany—a school that provides learning that lasts,
faith that lives.
Within a diverse faith-based community, Bethany fosters respectful
and compassionate relationships that build a safe and trusting
environment. Last year English teacher Eileen Becker-Hoover‘s
mentees planned a surprise visit to her home while she was on
leave recovering from surgery.
Our Mission
Bethany Christian Schools is a
dynamic learning community that
integrates faith development with
academic excellence. Grounded in
Mennonite values, Bethany equips
students for Christian discipleship in
the church and around the world.
Thanks to family, friends, alumni, businesses, and congregations listed
in this report for your generous support in helping make it possible for
students to acquire a Christian education at Bethany. This support covers
the difference between tuition and the cost of education.
