Annual Report For fiscal year 2007: October 1, 2006 to September 30, 2007

Dear Friends of Caponi Art Park,
Once again you have helped us fulfill our mission of creating a space where all people feel
welcome to explore their creativity in a supportive and natural environment nestled within a busy
metropolitan community. More than 5,000 of you from all over the Twin Cities Metro Area and
beyond visited Caponi Art Park & Learning Center in 2007, enjoying one or more of our 22 events
or simply walking among the woods and trails. We are especially pleased to see the families who
return to the park each year and those who include the Art Park in their holiday traditions.
During the Summer Performance Series, we are fortunate to have talented musicians return each
year to the Theater in the Woods. Both the Minnesota Sinfonia and Dakota Valley Summer Pops
Orchestra have commented on how they enjoy performing at the Art Park more than any other
site in the Twin Cities because of the wonderful acoustics and the positive experience they gain
from the park itself. Other events that educate audiences about the rich cultural heritage of the
world were presented as well. For example, the “Dots and Feathers” performance helped to dispel
the confusion between Asian Indians and American Indians and explained the cultural significance
and similarities of both. Sounds of Hope featured more than 50 children from 15 countries
performing songs and dances representative of their native cultures.
Caponi Art Park is a place that knows no age boundaries. In 2007, more than 1,300 parents and
children were introduced to a wide variety of art forms during Family Fun Tuesdays, a program
which makes art approachable and exciting, and encourages active participation. Poets in
the Park poetry slam brings young adults to the Art Park to share their creativity and mingle
with professional writers. The Shakespeare Festival and Medieval Fair experienced a surge in
attendance, of all ages. But then, who wouldn’t enjoy displays of equestrian regalia and horse
drawn wagons?
We continue to welcome a growing number of organized groups to the park. Nearly 500
people took formal tours last year. School field trips, Girl and Boy Scout troops, social service
organizations and motor coach travel groups participated in these narrated tours. A new group
of outdoor enthusiasts known as geocachers –”treasure” hunters who use a global positioning
system to hide and seek a prize – also have found the park an interesting hideaway for their
hobby.
2007 was an important year for the Art Park in other ways as well. The board of directors worked
throughout the year with professional consultants to build the park’s organizational capacity
and to increase its financial stability so it can better serve its visitors. We also hired a full-time
Program and Volunteer Coordinator, Heather Parker.
Of course, the park does not take care of itself and we have lots of people and organizations
to thank for their new and continued support, not the least of which is you, our donors and
volunteers. Thank you for your contributions and please remember the park among your future
philanthropic plans.
As we embark upon another season at the Caponi Art Park & Learning Center, we ask that you
keep us in your plans. Come out for a concert or other event and bring along a child, grandchild or
friend. Or, simply walk the dog or enjoy solitude with nature. Either way, make a pledge to yourself
that you’ll re-energize your batteries here, where the park is the art.
In appreciation,
