In September 2003, Sleepy Hollow Public School decided to see how much water they were using and investigate ways of saving water. They decided to do an audit to find out what was happening to water in their school. The Year 6 students looked at the bills for the previous three months and calculated how much water was used per month by the whole school. Year 5 students counted all the taps, identified all the leaks and asked students and staff how they used the water in the school. The Year 5 class asked the Principal to organise for the leaking taps to be fixed. After this was done the Year 6 students looked at the bills again. By doing the water audit Year 5 had found out that the kindergarten class washed their brushes outside after their art lesson every second day. The children would stand in a long line and wash each brush one by one under a fast running tap. The Year 5 class thought this might be a problem and a major waste of water. They asked the kindergarten children if they could think of another way to clean their brushes. The kindy kids said they could wash their brushes in a bucket to see if that would help. The Year 6 class looked at the bills again.
