Oglebay Through the Years
More than one hundred years ago, a tradition
of generous hospitality was started at the
summer estate of Earl W. Oglebay. In the
1920s, the estate was given to the City of
Wheeling and grew into an unparalleled resort.
Today, Oglebay offers 1,700 acres of yearround
recreational opportunities and excellent
overnight accommodations but has retained its
picturesque natural beauty.
For generations, families, groups and
individuals have indulged in the tradition and
spirit that make Oglebay unique.
Oglebay’s 16-acre Bissonnette Gardens have been meticulously
restored and are maintained year-round assuring that visitors today
are able to experience and appreciate the original horticulture.
The mansion went through a series of renovations and expansions
during the Oglebay family’s residence. Today, it remains a focal point
of the resort and houses a museum rich with Oglebay family history.

Accommodations
Wilson Lodge is the centerpiece of Oglebay with
271 rooms, suites and chalets. The most recent
expansion and renovation project provided a
new level of guest comfort and luxury with the
addition of 59 premium rooms and the West
Spa. The premium rooms and suites have
soothing guest interiors which feature rich wood
and granite, LCD TVs, wet bars, balconies and
high-speed wireless internet service.

The West Spa in Wilson Lodge provides relaxing
and therapeutic services, utilizing the finest
products and equipment. You can expect the
same great hospitality and service, for which
Oglebay has always been noted, at our spa.

Cottages & Estate Houses
Ideal for groups or larger families, Oglebay
has 54 cottages including three eight bedroom
premium cottages. Each cottage has a spacious
living room with fireplace, fully-equipped kitchen
and either two, four, six or eight bedrooms.
For executive retreats, four estate houses are
available at Oglebay. The Palmer and Wheeler
Estate Houses are located in private areas
overlooking the Speidel Golf Club. These
estate houses feature spacious great rooms
encompassing the kitchen, dining and living
room, and six bedrooms, all with private baths.
Maple Chalet is a private, two-story chalet
located near Wilson Lodge with seven
bedrooms, all with private baths and a
spectacular view of the Oglebay hillsides.
Waddington Estate House features five
bedrooms and meeting and dining facilities
for up to 12 persons.

Dining Options
The Ihlenfeld Dining Room at Wilson Lodge
offers contemporary selections with regional
treats. This terraced dining room overlooking
Schenk Lake provides a comfortable ambiance
and awe-inspiring view.
The GlassWorks Grill at Wilson Lodge features
a casual atmosphere and a unique menu that
the entire family will enjoy.
Wilson Lodge also offers in-room dining and
pizza delivery to the guest rooms.
Overlooking the 18th hole of the Jones course,
the Speidel Grill in the Hamm Clubhouse at the
golf club features a light menu and a great view.
Various seasonal refreshment stands are
located throughout the resort.

Oglebay is the ideal environment for both
business and pleasure. The resort provides
a unique atmosphere for corporate meetings,
conferences, retreats and outings. All 15
meeting rooms feature high-speed wireless
internet access as well as individual lighting,
sound, and temperature controls. Over 20,000
square feet of meeting space offers flexibility
and versatility to accommodate groups from
15 to 400.

Golfer’s Paradise
Oglebay is truly a golfer's paradise with four
golf courses including two championship
courses at the Speidel Golf Club. The newest
championship course, which opened in 2000,
is a modern links layout designed by Arnold
Palmer and our classic Robert Trent Jones, Sr.
designed championship course continues to
be one of West Virginia's premier layouts.

of daylight allow for a second, or even a third
round of golf, Oglebay's courses will provide
enough challenges and spectacular scenery
to please the most discriminating golfer.

green surrounded by two sand bunkers.
Before and after your game, stop in the Hamm

Bissonnette Gardens
The 16-acre Bissonnette Gardens are a
restoration of the gardens that existed at
Oglebay when it was still a private estate
in the early 1900s.
These beautiful gardens feature winding brick
paths meandering through seasonal floral
displays, hanging baskets, majestic trees and
tranquil fountains.

Specialty Shops
Whether souvenir or special occasion gifts, you
will find a wide variety of unique merchandise
at Oglebay. You’ll find shops located in each
major area of the resort.
The Carriage House Glass features the area’s
largest selection of decorative glass, plus an
Artisan Center and Glass Museum.

The Farmhouse Sweets & Treats Shoppe
specializes in chocolates, candy & regionally
produced food products.
The Pro Shop, located at the Speidel Golf
Club, features golf apparel and accessories.
In November and December during the Winter
Festival of Lights, this store is transformed into
a one-of-a-kind Christmas shop featuring
seasonal decorations, ornaments and other
holiday-related merchandise.

The Good Zoo
Over 50 species of animals, many rare or
endangered, reside within the 30-acre Good
Zoo. Featured exhibits include an Outback
Exhibit and Lorikeet Landing as well as zebras,
African wild dogs, meerkats, spectacled bears,
lemurs, red pandas, river otters and the
Wonders of the Wetlands area where visitors
can observe a swan, turtles and various other
plants and animals that call these fragile areas
home. The historic C.P. Huntington Train Ride
takes visitors on a one and a half mile journey
through the zoo. The red barn is filled with
friendly domestic animals such as llamas, goats
and donkeys. Our Animal Encounter program
allows visitors to get up close and personal
with some of our residents.

Indoor exhibits include the hands-on Discovery
Lab, where you’ll observe small animals
including poison dart frogs, tamarin monkeys
and salamanders. The Benedum Theater
features a variety of programs about nature
and the universe. The zoo also houses West
Virginia’s largest 0-gauge model train display.

Seasonal Activities
Nestled amidst the beauty of West Virginia's
mountains, Oglebay offers 1,700 acres of
relaxation and recreation including miles of
paved walking and jogging trails that stretch
throughout the property. Schenk Lake at
Oglebay offers pedal boats, aquacycles and
fishing. A miniature golf course and playground
can be found adjacent to the lake. Our segway
tours are a fun way to tour the resort while
learning about some of the park’s rich, historical
background.
During the winter months, the ski and
snowboard area features state-of-the-art
snowmaking, triple chairlift and a terrain park
featuring rails of different sizes plus exciting
snow-made jumps. Skis, snowboards and boots
are available for rental at our handicapped
accessible facility.
In addition to the golf course at the Crispin
Center, there is a large outdoor pool and 10
Har-Tru tennis courts.
Oglebay offers a wide variety of seasonal
camps and programs for both children and
adults. Special packages for motorcoach groups
are available.

Museums & Environmental Center
Built in 1846, the Mansion Museum (pictured
below) was originally an 8-room farmhouse.
While under the ownership of Earl W. Oglebay
from 1900 to 1926, the Mansion was expanded
and renovated. Today, the magnificent home
depicts the history and decorative arts of the
upper Ohio Valley throughout its 13 period
rooms and special exhibits. It was the first
museum in West Virginia to be accredited by
the American Association of Museums and was
given the honor of being placed on the National
Register of Historic Places in 1979.
The Glass Museum is located on the lower
level of Carriage House Glass and features
over 3,500 examples of historic glass and
china made in Wheeling from 1820 to 1952.
Architecturally fascinating, the Schrader
Environmental Education Center (pictured right)
was constructed with environmentally sensitive
building products and processes and features
the EarthTrek Exhibit Hall, bird observation
windows, hands-on children’s area, outdoor
trails and butterfly gardens.

Festivals & Celebrations
Oglebay is home to various annual arts and
crafts festivals including Oglebayfest, the
area’s premier fall festival featuring the finest
artisans and craftsmen plus specialty foods
and entertainment.
During the Summer, Oglebay hosts many
different outdoor concerts as well as special
holiday celebrations.
In 1985 a holiday tradition began at Oglebay
and spread throughout the City of Wheeling.
That tradition is the Winter Festival of Lights
celebration. The first year, displays and
landscape lighting covered about 125 acres
over a three-mile drive throughout the resort.
Since then the show has grown into one of
the nation's largest light shows covering more
than 300 acres over a six-mile drive.

The Wheeling Area
A most interesting and historic town awaits
you at the base of the hill in Wheeling, WV.
The entire city has been deemed a federally
