Upgrading biogas to biomethane with the HAASE
BiogasUpgrader
HAASE BiogasUpgrader Type 1,100 in Rathenow
Biomethane in natural gas quality (bio natural gas) for gas grid injection and fuel for vehicles
Upgrading biogas to biomethane and feeding it into the grid - this often is the most economical
solution on sites without heat consumers. Biogas upgrading avoids loss of energy by unused exhaust
heat from CHP and thus brings the most return.
The biogas is upgraded to the quality of natural gas, led through the gas grid and utilised
independently of the location of the biogas plant - for power generation, for heating or as fuel for
vehicles. Thus the bio natural gas replaces fossil natural gas where it brings the most return and
avoids harmful CO2 emissions.
The upgrading process
The BiogasUpgrader operates by physical-organic scrubbing. The scrubbing solution is regenerated
during the process and helps to protect the environment with its low emission levels. Compared
with other methods, e.g. such as high-pressure water scrubbing, chemical scrubbing and membrane
methods, the BiogasUpgrader offers essential advantages.
Optimal energy concept
A HAASE BiogasUpgrader upgrades biogas to biomethane without heat loss. The required process
heat is produced internally during the upgrading process, even exploiting the low methane slip which
is recycled into the process. In addition to the raw gas feed, the BiogasUpgrader therefore only has
one more external interface: the power supply. It is independent of external heat sources. This is an
important factor for the high availability and reliability.
Characteristics of the BiogasUpgrader
• Methane concentration adjustable according to the requirements of the natural gas grid
• Methane loss (< 1%) is recycled into the process
• Exhaust levels according to the German technical instructions on air quality control (TA-Luft)
with the HAASE VocsiBox®
• Sewage-free operation
• Low energy consumption with inherent heat supply
• Optional heat extraction
• Integrated desulphurisation and dehumidification
• High process stability
• Availability up to 8,600 hours per year in combination with a HAASE maintenance or plant
operation contract
Biomethane projects with a HAASE BiogasUpgrader were awarded several times for innovation. 2007,
the BiogasUpgrader Jameln got the Innovation Award of the DLV in the category "Renewable Energy".
2008, the biogas fuel station Jameln received the Innovation Prize of the German gas industry. The
biomethane projects Ronnenberg (2008) and Rathenow (2009) were awarded by the German Energy
Agency "dena" as part of the "Biogas Partnership" award for exemplary facilities and services. At both
sites is a BiogasUpgrader is part of the project.
