Grand 12-Day Samvatsara Mahotsavam Celebration
(Thursday, June 24 - Monday, July 5, 2010)
Our Temple will be celebrating the 12-day Samvatsara Mahotsavam
in a grand manner this year from Thursday, June 24 to Monday, July 5
under the leadership of Sri Shanmukha Sivacharya (Asthana Sivacharya
of our temple) and a Vaishnava Acharya. The celebration will include,
besides Homams and special aradhanas for all deities, a 11-day
lecture (in the evening) by the Sivacharya on the worship of various
aspects of Devi along with 2 Lecture/Question Answer sessions for
Young Adults.

On Sunday September 12th, the Temple is organizing a special
puja dedicated to seek the grace of our Deities for the academic
success and all-round well being of our children and young
adults. This puja will be a culmination of a special Japam (repetition
of a potent mantra) that will be collectively chanted by
all our priests 100,000 (one Lakh) times. On that day there will
also be a puja performed by children as a part of Ganesh Chaturthi
celebration. After the puja, Parama Pujya
Swami Dayananda Saraswathi will give a
special benedictory lecture blessing all
the children and young adults. This year
marks Swamiji’s 80th birthday and our
children and young adults will indeed
be fortunate to receive his blessings
during his special visit to our temple.

Topic: “Aparokshanubhuti”, which means immediate knowledge
of oneself as whole and free of limitations is an ancient
Vedantic text attributed to Adi Shankara. It comes under the
category of a “prakarana grantha,” a work that unfolds the vision
of the Upanishad along with the teaching methodology.
The hundred and forty four verses outline in a systematic manner,
the nature of the qualified aspirant, and the preparation for
the knowledge, along with the unfolding of the vision.”

Special Sarpabali Puja
(Monday, July 5, 2010)
Sarpabali is the worship of 55 divine snakes (including Siva’s Vasuki
and Vishnu’s Adisesha) to ward off the bad effects of Sarpa Dosha.
Though normally performed on Aaslesha Nakshatra” days in the Hindu
Solar months of “Kanya” and “Kumbha”, considering the concerns
and uncertainty many families are going through, our priest wants to
provide an opportunity for our congregation to participate in this special
puja to obtain overall peace of mind, good health and material
prosperity. Turmeric powder, rice, milk, coconuts, fruits and flowers
are the ingredients generally brought by devotees for Sarpabali. For
the ingredients to be included in the Puja, they must be given to
the priest before the Puja starts. Sankalpam for the Puja (when
devotees can mention to the priest the problems to be overcome
or desires to be fulfilled) will begin at 6:00 pm. Sarpabali Puja will
be performed in the Kerala Tantric style from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

Trimurti Puja
(Sunday, July 11, 2010)
The temple will celebrate a Trimurti Puja for Lords Siva, Vishnu and
Ayyappa on Sunday, July 11. The Trimurti Puja will be conducted by
our temple priests representing the Saiva, Vaishnava and the Kerala
Tantric traditions. The preparation for the Puja will begin the previous
day with Bhoota Suddhi rituals on the Ashtadala Mandalam
(ritualistic cleansing and preparation for the Puja). On July 11, the
Lords will be invoked in 21 lamps and offered the traditional Pujas.
Sahasranama (1000 names) and Ashtotara (108 names) Archanas will
be performed in which all devotees are encouraged to participate. In
addition, devotees may also participate in the Bhajans that will be
interspersed throughout the Puja. All are welcome to sponsor and to
participate in this unique Puja.

Bhagawati Seva (During Kataka Month)
(Friday July 16 to Sunday, August 15, 2010)
Dakshinayana marks the southern transition of sun for a period of six
months. These six months are the night time for the Gods and Goddesses.
The first of these six Hindu months is especially important for the worship
of Devi (the Universal Mother). Bhagawati Seva which is worship
of the Devi in the Kerala Tantric tradition, will be performed daily from

Mata Amritanandamayi or Amma also known as the "hugging saint"
will be gracing us with her presence in the DC area on July 9th, 10th
and 11th (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at the Hilton Alexandria Mark
Center, 5000 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA, 22311. PROGRAMS
ARE FREE AND ALL ARE WELCOME. On 9th from 11:00 am. On
the 10th 10:00 am and 7:30 pm and on 11th, will be at 10:00 am and
Atma puja ( group prayer for world peace) and Devi Bhava Darshan
at 7:00 pm. Everyone needs a token to see Amma and tokens will be

Trikaala Devi Puja
(Sunday, August 1, 2010)
The Kataka month is very auspicious for the worship of the Divine
Mother. Trikaala Devi Puja is a Puja to the Universal Mother as
Bhagawathi Devi. This Puja done in the Kerala Tantric tradition is
traditionally performed at dawn, noon and sunset. In addition to the
Puja done by the priest, Lalitha Sahasranamam, Soundarya Lahari and
other Devi sthotrams will be recited by devotees during the course of
the day. All devotees are requested to participate and partake in the
Blessings of the Goddess.

Shravana Somavaar
(August 9, 16, 23 & 30, 2010)
The Hindu Lunar month of “Shravan” is considered very auspicious
for religious observances. The Mondays during this month is very
special for Lord Siva. Devotees of Siva observe fast that day and
offer their prayers to him. Lord Siva is very easily pleased by the
Abhishekams offered by his devotees. Abhishekam to the chanting of
Rudram, Trishati Archana (Offering Bilwa Patra and flowers chanting
the 300 names of the Lord), reciting Siva Sthotras and the Jaya
Jagadeesha Hare Aarati are some of the highlights of the Puja that
will be performed every Monday during the Shravan month.

Sandwiches for Homeless July 10, 2010
Every second Saturday of each month, volunteers make sandwiches and
deliver them to the shelter in DC. Children and adults of all ages can
