Only 17 percent of women and 29 percent of men reported that they had heard or seen a family
planning message on the radio or television or both during the few months prior to the interview. Radio
is by far the more important of the two media, with only 4 percent of women and 8 percent of men
having seen a family planning message on television.
A sharp contrast in access to family planning messages is observed between urban and rural
residents. More than 90 percent of rural women and three-fourths of rural men have not heard a family
planning message through the electronic media in the few months prior to the survey, compared with
half of urban women and 30 percent of urban men.
The proportion of respondents who have been exposed to family planning messages on the radio
or television varies across regions. Exposure to the electronic media is higher in Addis Ababa, where 60
percent of women and 70 percent of men had heard or seen family planning messages on either the
radio or television; whereas in the Amhara Region, the corresponding numbers were only 11 and
16 percent, respectively. In fact, the level of exposure to family planning messages is very low in most
of the regions where more than eight out of ten women have not heard any messages on either the radio
or television.
