3.9 WOMEN’S ATTITUDE TOWARD WIFE BEATING<br />
The Ethiopia <strong>DHS</strong> gathered information on women’s attitude toward wife beating, a proxy for<br />
women’s perception of their status. Women were asked whether a husband is justified in beating his wife<br />
under a series of circumstances. The results are summarized in Table 3.10. A sizable majority of women<br />
(85 percent) believe that a husband is justified in beating his wife for at least one reason. Two in three<br />
women believe that a husband is justified in beating his wife if she burns the food or neglects<br />
