The age structure of the household population observed in the survey is typical of a society with
a youthful population. The sex and age distribution of the population is also shown in the population
pyramid in Figure 2.1. Ethiopia has a pyramidal age structure due to the large number of children under
15 years of age. Children under 15 years of age account for 46 percent of the population, a feature of
populations with high fertility levels (Table 2.1). Fifty-one percent of the population is in the age group
15-64 and almost 4 percent are over 65.
