10.20 FEEDING PRACTICES<br />

Table 10.24 shows the percent distribution of children<br />

under five who had diarrhea in the past two weeks, by feeding<br />

practices. Seventeen percent of children who had diarrhea were<br />

given the same amount of liquid as usual, 35 percent were given<br />

more than the usual amount, and 48 percent were given less.<br />

About nine in ten children with diarrhea (87 percent) were<br />

given less than the usual amount of food, 11 percent were given<br />

the same amount of food, and only 2 percent were given more<br />

food than usual.<br />

10.21 WOMEN’S STATUS AND CHILDREN’S HEALTH CARE<br />

Status and self-respect can be major determinants of a<br />

mother’s ability to obtain adequate health care for herself and her<br />

children. Table 10.25 presents the percentage of children age 12-<br />

23 months who were fully vaccinated and the percentage of<br />

by whether mothers believed that husbands are justified in beating their wives for any reason, an<br />

indicator of woman’s status.<br />

In general the percentage of children of mothers who believed that a husband is not justified in<br />

beating his wife for any reason at all were more likely to be fully vaccinated or taken to a provider for<br />

treatment when they were ill than children of women who believed that husbands are justified in beating<br />

their wives for any reason.<br />
