From the Desk of Mrs. Wise:
I hope everyone had an enjoyable Fall Break. Students and staff returned refreshed
and ready for the next 8 weeks. I wanted to share several things with
you:
I am very pleased and excited to announce that White Lick Elementary
has been given an “A” letter grade for our school achievement
this past year. I am very proud of our students and the White
Lick staff. Brownsburg Community Schools is one of the few school corporations
to earn a straight “A” report card for all of their schools. Letter
grades are calculated based on data collected throughout each school
year. Indiana recently shifted to a more comprehensive way of measuring
and reporting school performance, as required by state law. These grades
take into account a variety of factors, namely student performance and
student growth. You can view the A through F school accountability report
card for White Lick at the Indiana Department of Education’s COM-
PASS website at compass.doe.in.gov. This report details all of the components
that are factored into White Lick’s letter grade this year.
Thursday, Nov. 8 th we will be hosting our Fall Book Fair and Puppet
Show from 6 – 8:00 p.m.
* Fall Dinner - We are offering a fall Chick-fil-A dinner to make it easier on
families. Dinner will be served in the café from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. $4.00
includes a chicken sandwich, chips, cookie and a drink. Dinners will be
ordered based on our pre-orders. Please return your form as soon as
possible so we can plan accordingly.
* Puppet Show – The Peewinkle Puppet Studio will be here to perform for
you! Show starts at 7:15 in our cafeteria.
* Bingo! We will also have a fun game of bingo going on in the media center
with great prizes.
* Ident-A-Kid – The Ident-A-Kid card is a Child Identification Card designed
to provide parents and law enforcement officials with crucial information
should your child become lost or missing. The drivers license-like card
contains your child’s photograph, fingerprint and description. Parents keep
the card with them at all times and, in an emergency, can provide law enforcement
with it for immediate response. In addition, the United
States Government's Social Security Administration recognizes the Ident-
A-Kid Card may be usable in supporting either secondary or third level
identification, should it be needed.
From the Desk of Mrs. Wise (cont’d):
The cost is: 1 card - $8; 2 cards with ekid - $10; 4 cards with ekid - $15
The ekid is a copy of the card sent as a text message to the parent’s cell phone. They can forward
the picture to as many people as they would like.
School Nurse- I am sad to share with you that Jane Jaco, our school nurse, has accepted another position
outside of Brownsburg Schools. She will be deeply missed at White Lick. We are in the process
of interviewing for her replacement. Once a replacement has been confirmed, I will share that information
with staff and parents.
Dine to Donate: Our next “Dine to Donate” event will be held at Rock Star Pizza on November
12-13. We will send home flyers with students so you can present Rock Star with our school flyer.
We will receive 15% of the sales from those who show the WL flyer.
Brownsburg Cheer Commiee
We are asking you to assist the Brownsburg Cheer Commiee in reaching out to families in need this holiday
season. Following is a list of donaons that White Lick Elementary students and families have been asked to
provide. If you can donate any of the items, please drop it off at the school or have your child bring it to class
between November 3rd- November 30th. In order to get our students excited about donang items to this
great cause we are going to have a grade level compeon in which the grade level with the highest percentage
of goods will win a pizza party! Thank you for any help you can provide. The following items are needed:
Bath Soap
Canned Meat
Cereal
Peanut Buer/Jelly
Soup
Boxed Potatoes
Canned Vegetables
Pasta/Rice
Pop Tarts
“Watch Dog” Tackles Bullying and Crime
BCSC has launched a new anonymous reporting system provided by Crime Stoppers.
This system, that will be known as "Watch Dog", allows anyone - students, parents,
community members - to anonymously report anything that may affect the safety of
our students and our schools. "Watch Dog" provides the flexibility for anonymous tips
to be made through a phone call, text message or online submission. Read more in the
current issue of Spotlight on Education.
1. Text “INDYCY” + your tip to 274637
2. Online @CrimeTips.org
3. Call (317) 262-8477 (TIPS) or 800-222-8477 (TIPS)
Watch Dog is the preferred reporting method for middle and high school students, rather
than current school hotline numbers, although current hotline numbers will remain
active until the beginning of the second semester in January of 2012. Elementary students
can also use this process, however, “bully boxes” will remain in all the elementary
schools.
Character Trait for November and December: COMPASSION
Our character trait for the next two months is COMPASSION: being kind to others. During classroom
guidance lessons, we frequently talk about the importance of thinking of others. If we were the only
one in our world, we could just think about what we want and be a “just me” person! However, since
we—staff, students, and parents—are part of a larger school community, it doesn’t work to be “just us”
people. Compassion means we are putting ourselves in others’ shoes and trying to understand what
they are feeling, and then we are doing something kind to help. During this week, make a point of
recognizing when your child shows compassion and giving them examples of how they can show
compassion towards others.
Warning signs
Possible warning signs that a child is being bullied:
Bullying Prevention
* Comes home with torn, damaged, or missing
pieces of clothing, books, or other belongings;
* Has unexplained cuts, bruises, and scratches;
* Has few, if any, friends with whom he or she
spends time;
* Seems afraid of going to school, walking to and
from school, riding the school bus, or taking part
in organized activities with peers (such as clubs);
* Takes a long, “illogical” route when walking to or
from school;
* Has lost interest in school work or suddenly
begins to do poorly in school;
* Appears sad, moody, teary, or depressed when he
or she comes home;
* Complains frequently of headaches, stomachaches,
or other physical ailments;
* Has trouble sleeping or has frequent bad dreams;
*Experiences a loss of appetite; or
*Appears anxious and suffers from low self-esteem.
If you have any questions about White Lick’s bullying prevention program please contact Mrs. Larkey at
(317) 852-3126.
