CLIMBING INSTRUCTIONS:
Marking:
All routes will be clearly marked on the climbing areas with colour-coded holds and a descriptive route card.
Route difficulty will be categorised as detailed below and competitors will be expected to attempt all 25 routes in
their allocated zones.
Scoring:
9 EASY CLIMBS 5 X 4C, 4 X 5A
8 MEDIUM CLIMBS 4 X 5B, 4 X 5C
8 HARD CLIMBS 4 X 6A, 4 X 6B/C
SUCCESSFUL FIRST ATTEMPT
SUCCESSFUL SECOND ATTEMPT
SUCCESSFUL THIRD ATTEMPT
10 POINTS
7 POINTS
4 POINTS
Bonus Points:
On all problems, a bonus point may be gained by reaching a certain marked hold in the event of 3 failed
attempts. These extra points are then added to the final points score.
Competition Rules and Regulations:
All competitors will have been nominated and team composition determined in advance. There will be no
additional entries on the day but substitutions will be allowed for injury or sickness provided they are taken from
the nominated list of reserves.
Each competitor will be responsible for his/her own scorecard. This card will display and record the route
number, attempt number and score for each route. The score card will be handed in to the route judge prior to
each attempt.
During the competition each competitor will then have three attempts to complete the 25 routes. These attempts
do not need to be consecutive.
Each competitor is responsible for being present and prepared at the start of the competition, no extensions will
be allowed.
Competitors must climb the routes using only the designated holds and friction smears. The use of any other
hold or feature terminates the attempt.
Once the competitor’s body has completely left the floor he/she is deemed to have started that attempt. Touching
the floor again before reaching the finishing hold terminates the attempt.
Competitors must reach and hold the designated finishing hold in control and remain there until the route judge
confirms a successful ascent. Dynos to touch or brief touches of the finishing hold terminates the attempt.
Competitors may ascend the wall beside the route in order to inspect or clean the designated holds.
Competitors may not touch any marked holds at any time.
At the end of the allocated time, any competitor who is engaged in an attempt and whose body is completely off
the ground may finish that attempt.
Problems or questions should be addressed to the Chief Judge via the Route Judge.

At the end of the competition all competitors must check their score cards and hand them in to the administration
desk.
The male and female individual winners will be those with the highest score. The mixed team championship will
be awarded to the University with the highest aggregate score.
In the event of a tie on points, the organisers will determine the winners by the following:
• Number first attempts completed successfully
• Number of routes completed
• Number of routes attempted
• Number of failed attempts
• Super Final Climb-off
The super final will take place in accordance with the UIAA-ICC regulations governing international climbing
competitions
IN ALL CASES THE JUDGES’ DECISION WILL BE FINAL
BEHAVIOUR:
All teams will be expected to behave in manner befitting to the standard of the event. Teams are reminded of
General Regulation REG 16.9 – which can be accessed on www.bucs.org.uk/rules and clicking on general
Regulations.
ACCREDITATION:
An accreditation system will be in place at this year’s BUCS Championships. Accreditation will be used to ensure
that only competitors have access to competition areas within a venue. For many sports, competitors will also
need to produce certain sports specific documentation to obtain accreditation. Once an individual has received a
pass it must be worn at all times.
Please visit www.bucs.org.uk/accreditation09 for a full detailed explanation of the accreditation system at the
BUCS Championships or see the attached document.
Competitors will also be able to collect an exclusive Nike competitors’ t-shirt at the Accreditation Hubs as well as
an event programme containing offers and discounts from our partners
IF ANY MEMBER OF A TEAM OR INDIVIDUAL SPORT DOES NOT PROVIDE THE RELEVANT
DOCUMENTATION THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE AND WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO ENTER THE
VENUES AS A SPECTATOR. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS MADE TO THIS RULE.
On successfully accrediting, each competitor and team support staff member will receive an accreditation pass
which must be worn at all times. A BUCS Championships t-shirt will also be supplied to all competing athletes.
Accreditation will generally allow competitors and team staff to access changing rooms, the competition areas,
warm up areas, and medical areas.

Accreditation will also allow competitors and team staff to enter all other venues free of charge in order to
spectate in designated areas.
Please bear in mind that whilst every endeavour will be made to make accreditation a quick process, at key times
it could be busy and therefore may take some time. It is advised that teams and individuals should allow
adequate time to ensure all relevant people can pass through Accreditation in time for their matches/events.
There will be no opportunity to circumvent this accreditation procedure.
LOST PASSES
If an athlete or support staff loses his/her accreditation pass there will be a £5.00 charge for a replacement pass.
NO ACCREDITATION, NO COMPETITION.
SPONSORS
At Nike, serving the athlete has always been at the forefront of everything we do. Be it through providing
innovative, technical products or supporting development and raising their profile, we strive to make a positive
impact and enhance their game – whatever it might be. Our co-founder Bill Bowerman famously said, “If you
have a body – you are an athlete” and we apply this philosophy at every possible instance.
We therefore recognise the significance of participation in sport at all levels, from grass roots right through to the
pinnacle of international competition, and the universities with BUCS in particular, play a fundamental part in
nurturing this performance and development. We are sure that a consistent level of support in this system will
also see us attribute to great success in the 2012 London Olympics. A prime example of our investment can be
seen recently in a Nikewomen campaign to scour the UK and Ireland’s top universities to find ambitious and
inspirational young women who are passionate about sport and live their lives with the strength and confidence it
gives them.
The chosen few have become part of Nike Selects – working with Nike to embody the spirit of Nikewomen on
campus and share their love for sport with the wider world. For more information please visit
Who is Right To Play?
Right To Play is an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play as a tool for development of
children and youth in the most disadvantaged areas of the world. We work with over 700,000 children twice a
week, in over 23 countries throughout Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. We have a number of Athlete
ambassadors, like Andy Murray, Lance Armstrong, and Frank Lampard, which we use as a source of inspiration
for the children we work with.
What does Right To Play do?
Right To Play uses sport and play programs to promote opportunities for development, teach life skills and health
education and build stronger, more peaceful communities. To do this, Right To Play trains local Coaches to run
programs thereby creating the foundation in a community for regular and long-term sport and play programming
and for individual and community leadership. Right To Play also uses sport and play to mobilise and educate
communities around key health issues to support national health objectives, in particular HIV and AIDS
prevention and awareness and vaccination campaigns.
What can you expect from Right To Play @ the Championships?
Right To Play will have two main stands at the Championships; one at Ponds Forge, and a second at the EISS.
At these stands you can understand more about the great work Right To Play is doing all over the world, you can
enter into a prize raffle where you can win some great sporting prizes like tickets to Wimbledon, Chelsea F.C,
signed memorabilia, and an Internship at our London HQ. You can also sign up to become a ‘Friend of Right To
Play’, where you will receive monthly newsletters and be entered into a draw to win some fantastic prizes!
Right To Play are also the official sponsors of this year’s Ultimate event which we are very excited about, so
come along to Mount St Mary’s to experience some exciting Ultimate action.
Right To Play will be present at the university sports exhibition on Friday 13 March at The Hubs @ Sheffield
Hallam. Come along to the event for the chance to meet and greet some Olympic athlete ambassadors and
