from the editor’s desk . . .
4-H . . . always a good choice!
Recession. No one likes to think about it or acknowledge the
fact that we might very well be heading in that direction.
As a parent, it means tightening the “buckle” on the wallet and
making wiser choices in the activities that we allow our children to participate in.
Does it mean that 4-H has to be one of the activities that gets cut? Not at all!
The provincial membership fee remains at $50.00 for the 2009 year and
members can take as many clubs as they like. There is no uniform to purchase,
no program book required (unless asked for by club leaders), and fees for events,
conferences and activities remain as low as possible.
Does it mean that 4-H Ontario will cut back on activities and resources. No!
The 4-H Ontario staff continues to work diligently at providing quality
programming, events and activities that all members and volunteers can take
advantage of.
Will 4-H Ontario be looking at finding other partners? Absolutely!
Part of the continued effort to provide quality programming is the continued
search for new partners and sponsors. Did the Scotiabank Youth Classic
disappear when Scotiabank (after many years of continued support) decided to
look at other opportunities? No! New partners stepped up and ensured the Youth
Congress continued, and to greater heights as well!
4-H has been learning and growing for more than 90+ years - through good times
and not so great times, and will continue to learn and grow and reach new youth
and adults today and in the days to come.
We may be heading into a “recession”, but 4-H is still going strong!
Amber Underwood Memorial News Competition
Senior winner
John Gordon Cole, Renfrew 4-H
Before the snow flies
farm tour
Our Renfrew County clubs have had
close ties with 4-H members from Shawville,
Quebec for quite a while (because it is
much closer to us than the rest of Ontario)
and we have jumped at the opportunities
they have given us to compete. I have
had the opportunity to participate in the
Provincial Rally, which is like a mini-fair
for 4-H members, and at the Macdonald
College Judging Competition. During our
time participating in events on the Quebec
side, we were inspired to try to adapt our
own versions of them.
One idea that quickly jumps to mind was
the Quebec Farm Tour. 4-H members were
given the chance to witness multiple styles
of farming that have been utilized by Quebec
farmers in various areas across the province.
Members brought back their experiences
on these tours, we decided to attempt our
own Renfrew County version. The senior
members’ Leadership Club created a plan
and we were soon underway.
In October 2007, our farm tour began
with over thirty members from Renfrew
County and West Quebec arriving at our
county Awards Banquet. For the next two
days, we visited Van Lindenburg’s rotary
Milking system, the “Taste of Renfrew”,
which showcased locally produced foods,
the Douglas Bull Evaluation Centre and
many more interesting beef, sheep, cash
crop and horse farms.
To accomplish this well-balanced tour, 4-
H members met weekly over a two-month
period to make arrangements with host
farms, arrange for billeting of participants,
find sponsors and create a fun after-tour
program. Support from our farm community
was well appreciated as many acted as
our sponsors as well as hosts. This time
of planning also helped jump start our
budding leadership program, as it taught
our members planning, public speaking
and organizational skills. The culmination
of these two months of hard work was a
tour that turned out better than we ever
imagined!
The 4-H members were very polite and
interested in the dozen tour destinations
and the Quebec members were pleased
that we returned their hospitality with our
own. There was a destination to intrigue
each participant and a new friend made at
each stop. Everyone enjoyed the banquet,
potluck dinner, Casino Night and bonfire that
were the social highlights of the weekend.
After the tour was over, it was clear that
both participants and hosts had enjoyed it
greatly, so we decided to make it a biennial
event. Ideas have began to form in our
heads concerning how to make the tour
better. It is hard to improve on something
perfect, but we are trying our hardest to do
just that!
I hope you have enjoyed reading this
success story and I would like to thank all
the sponsors, leaders and participants who
made this event possible. Watch for our
invitations for our 2009 “Before the Snow
Flies Farm Tour”. We hope to see as many
new faces as we do returning members!
My 4-H Success Story –
A Big Year
Joining 4-H Clubs is a fun and exciting
way to make new friends and learn different
things. 4-H is a prime example of a good club
because it is for all kids and teens whether
they are shy or talkative. I look forward to
going to all of the different meetings.
My story took place in my second year
of 4-H when I was eleven years old. I was
getting used to the routines of some of the
different clubs. Once again, I joined the
Poultry Club. When we chose the type of
birds that we wanted, I decided to try and
raise the Bonnie Heavy Red Chickens.
From chicks we raised our chickens, my
three heavy reds included. I was very happy
that I hadn’t lost any chickens and that they
were growing very nicely, though it was very
hard to tell them apart at first.
When it came time for the Harrow Fair, I
had a huge, nine pound hen. In order to get
her to the fair we had to cut the door in the
cage bigger so that she could get into it.
We brought my hen to the fair and got
it all set up in its home for the weekend.
We brought all of our other crafts to the
appropriate buildings, and headed home
where I could practise my speech for the
achievement day tomorrow.
We went to the fairgrounds the next day
and I headed straight to the barns with my
little bag of cracked corn, while my parents
and grandparents went to find a spot in the
crowd.
When I got into the barn I saw a red
ribbon and learned that my nine pound hen
was the Grand Champion Chicken. Now
that was a huge surprise and I was very
proud of my chicken and handy work.
Our leaders gave us all a small pep talk
and we all went to our cages to take out our
birds. We all lined up by the door, peeking
out to see how many people would be
watching us.
After a few minutes we were called out,
so we took our birds and all sat out in the
show ring. Our leaders introduced our club
to the audience while we sat wrestling with
our impatient birds.
Once the leaders completed their
introductory speeches, we were up to
bat. The few of us that chose speeches
over posters had to get ready to speak.
Thankfully, the senior members of the club
had to go first.
Before I knew it it was my turn to take
the microphone. I was very nervous, but
I successfully said my speech without
trouble.
The leaders said a few more words and
started giving out awards. Much to my
surprise, I won first place for the junior
speeches.
Once our program was over we put
our chickens away and went to find our
families in the crowd, where we received
congratulations on our way back home to
rest up for the auction the next day.
The next day, we went to the fairgrounds
again for the auction. I went to the barn and
got my huge hen ready to sell.
I waited until my name was called to
walk out to the show ring. I put my hen on
the ground and led it around the ring for
everybody to see. The auctioneer started
calling quick numbers and the buyers were
bidding with their cards.
After a few minutes of suspense, I learned
that Gord’s Abattoir bought my hen at twenty
two dollars a pound. Within moments,
I successfully earned one hundred and
ninety eight dollars. To an eleven year old,
that is a whole lot of money.
I’m sure that all groups have their special
moments, but the 4-H clubs surely have the
best there are. I’m in my fourth year of 4-
H and hope to have many more moments
throughout the years!

Kayaking
Kids Helping Kids Club
What began as a simple request
for assistance, turned into a 4-H Club
perhaps like no other.
When the co-ordinator of the
Chatham-Kent Special Populations
group approached Chatham-Kent 4-H
Canoe & Kayak Club leader, Dawne
Mudford with a request to borrow the
Club’s kayaks, along with her expertise
to run a day camp for kids with special
needs, an idea for a new 4-H Club
emerged.
Why not utilize the experienced
kayakers from the 4-H Club to work
one-on-one with the special needs
kids? And Kayaking-Kids Helping Kids
was born.
The request went out to members
of the Club, with a positive response.
Seven special needs kids were matched
up with ten kayaking club members, for
five evenings. Leader, Dawne Mudford
knew that the experience would be one
that none of the members would ever
forget.
After an orientation meeting, the
members were ready to meet their new,
special friends on the shore of shallow
Mitchell’s Bay on Lake St. Clair. The
result was amazing.
Bonds were quickly formed, and
suddenly disabilities gave way for new
abilities, and within a few hours of
instruction, all of the special kayakers
were experiencing something new and
exciting in their lives. Problems with
coordination and self esteem were
overcome and frustration was quickly
replaced with smiles.
Seventeen-year-old Jacqueline
Paterson has been a member of the
Canoe & Kayak Club since its launch
in 2003. Well versed in both kayaking
and canoeing, Jacqueline volunteered
her time to work with the newly formed
Club. With post-secondary plans revolving
around a teaching career,
Jacqueline found the experience of
working with the special needs kids to
be invaluable.
“A lot of people don’t take the time
to realize that they are really just kids
too, and they like to have fun and learn
things just like anyone else,” she said.
Craig Bayliss, also a member of the
Club found the experience of working
with the special needs kids to be
nothing short of miraculous. “It really
was great fun for all of us,” he said.
For Club president, Ethan Dieleman,
the reward for his efforts came on the
final evening of the camp. His charge,
“Quinn” was an autistic teenager whose
efforts at first seemed somewhat nonexistent.
But through patience and
persistence, Quinn was paddling
ahead of the squad on the final
evening - Parent’s Night, with Quinn’s
proud parents looking on. “It was really
amazing to see. It felt great to have
been a part of helping Quinn. It was very
rewarding,” said Ethan. But the biggest
surprise in Quinn’s transformation had
come on the final day, when, upon his
arrival to the beachfront, the usually
quiet and sombre young man ran
across the sand to “high-five” his new
4-H “bff”, Ethan.

National 4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference
by Don May
Picture this, it’s late summer 2008 - we’re wrapping up hay
season, and Marie Winter sends an e-mail asking if I have
any interest in attending National 4-H Volunteer Conference
(NVLC) in early November. Well the ensuing debate begins!
1 -Talk it over with spouse; 2 - contact work to see if I can be
gone for 3 days; 3 - consider that three family members and
spouse are in Toronto that same weekend competing at the
RAWF; 4 - my brother and his wife are in Florida for a one
month vacation; and finally that I will be leaving an 18 year
old in charge! Oh, and as if I hadn’t already thought about
a major wedding anniversary coming up at the end of the
month!! Then the blessing comes from the better half, that
“Yes, you better go”.
What I am pointing out is that “yes” we are all busy doing
what we think is important, “but we need to take the time for
change”.
As I mentioned, Marie’s message was looking for
volunteers. At this point in time, no-one had applied from
Ontario to attend with the deadline of March a long distant
past. I guess that I was like most others, and assumed
someone else would go. The girls at 4-H Ontario tell me that
it is a roller coaster - sometimes filling out quota of delegates
or else a famine! Unfortunately for you, but fortunately for
me I had a chance to attend a conference where I felt the
speakers that we had Wednesday night, Thursday a n d
Friday never lost my interest.
As we all know, at some conferences some
speakers can lull you off to sleep. Mark Essay,
with his presentation “Harnessing the Energy”
and the workshop “Cause Success” got everyone
charged up at the meal on Wednesday evening
and kept us interested with his talk on Thursday.
He’s a former 4-H member from Manitoba who
took part in 4-H for 10 years and is now teaching
tomorrow’s leaders at Portage Le Prairie. If at
any time you have the opportunity to hear or
to have mark interact with your volunteers or
youth, seize the opportunity.
Rob Black and Jane Muegge showed
us that we don’t all need to do things the
same way, but in the end, the goal is what
really matters when we work together.
Dori Gingera-Beauchimin talked about the
Canadian 4-H Foundation and the goals
that they are striving to achieve to leave 4-
H across this land financially sound even
if we have a few hiccups as time moves
on, with the present hiccup being Stock
Market values.
Tracy Drabyk-Zirk and Tammy Oswick-
Kearney led us in a round table discussion
on best practices in networking. We all
enjoyed hearing about clubs and fundraisers
that were being done from coast to coast. Gabriele Del
Bianco spoke on “the Wind in the Turbine - the Sun in the
Solar Panel”.
On the entertainment side, the opportunity to eat out with
the 4-H members at the Mysteriously Yours mystery dinner
theatre while being entertained by Greg Coleman from
Alberta on stage was a hoot, while his son watched - with
his head down. The tour and lunch at the John Deere plant
at Grimsby was enjoyed. I enjoyed sightseeing with people
who had never seen Niagara Falls.
As well, for most, the opportunity to visit “The Royal” for
the first time was high on their lists. The wrap-up banquet
with sponsors and the winning speeches from Christina
Crowley and Thomas Fisher from the 2007 Young Speakers
for Canadian Agriculture were enjoyed by all.
Referring back to the beginning of this article, if Marie had
not raised the issue of attending, I, like most others, would
not have thought I had time to partake in such a wonderful
five day event.
In the words of Bev Rasmussen from Alberta, “Sometimes
we get tired and wonder if it is worth all of the time we give,
but after the incredible sessions we had, we regain that
positive energy and are prepared to forge ahead in helping
keep members committed to the program.”
Thank you 4-H Ontario for the opportunity to attend and
here’s hoping we send a full delegation in 2009. I guess
everything worked out fine at home. Nothing
evident yet at any rate!
Friends of 4-H
Hundreds of 4-H supporters gathered at the Friends of 4-H
Fundraiser, organized by Gencor and Dairy Farmers of Ontari, who
incorporated a casual dinner with a live auction. Over $25,000 was
raised that will benefit 4-H youth across Ontario.
The Perrin family graciously donated their son David’s 4-H project
- Meadow Lee Mary Storm - in an effort to increase farm safety
awareness in the 4-H community. David died tragically in a silo gas
accident on October 4, 2008. See more on this on page 13.
The second item up in the live auction was a Toyota Tundra
SR5 4 x 4 truck, supplied courtesy of the Ontario Toyota Dealers.
Auctioneer Brent Walker eventually sold the truck to Gencor. Also
sold throughout the day at numerous locations were keys for
chances to unlock prize vaults full of great items.
The 4-H Truck
Another highlight at this year’s RAWF occurred thanks to a
five-way partnership anchored by Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show
(COFS) and Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI).
10 years ago 4-H Ontario launched a Foundation Endowment
Campaign to generate increased capacity and sustainability for
4-H at the local, regional and provincial levels. To mark this 10 th
anniversary 4-H is launching a brand new awareness campaign
that will focus on raising the profile of the Ontario 4-H Foundation.
Now because of these five key partners – Canada’s Outdoor
Farm Show, Toyota Canada Inc., UPI Energy LP, Ontario Mutuals
and Guelph Toyota - the “4-H Truck”, a Toyota Tundra, is ready to
hit the road - to be used as a travelling billboard for 4-H, not only to
promote the Foundation but also to support regional and provincial
camps and other 4-H activities.
Champion Goat Showperson Evan Stanley.

The David Perrin Memorial 4-H Farm Safety Endowment Fund
Newly established by the Perrin Family and 4-H Foundation
The family of David Perrin graciously
donated their son’s 2008 4-H Dairy Calf
Project, Meadow Lee Mary Storm, in an
effort to increase farm safety awareness in
the agricultural and 4-H community. David,
a 14 year old 4-H member and a partner
on the Ayr family farm, died tragically in a
silo gas accident on October 4, 2008. Older
brother Michael spoke on behalf of the family
at the funeral raising a heartfelt call to action
for “everyone to do what they could to avoid
this from happening to anyone else.”
On November 8, Mary Storm lived
up to her name by taking the Royal by
storm. The 4-H Calf sold a total of 9 times
at the Friends of 4-H Fundraiser, each
time raising funds for the David Perrin
Memorial Farm Safety Endowment Fund.
The ‘Friends of Waterloo 4-H’ Syndicate
was Mary’s second last successful buyer
with an incredible bid of $31,540.00.
When she sold for the 9 th and final time,
she had raised a total of $41,640.00. A
special thanks to Brent Walker, Guelph
Ontario, who served as Auctioneer, and to
Gencor and Dairy Farmers of Ontario for
incorporating this auction into their Friends
of 4-H Fundraiser.
As of December 15, the total funds
raised in memory of David have totalled
over $50,000. Donations are still welcome
from those who want to help 4-H Ontario
accomplish farm safety awareness and
education, to prevent a tragedy like this
from happening again, and to keep David’s
memory alive. Call Trisha or Lyndon at 519-
Julie Armstrong, Funding Coordinator for 4-H Ontario, accepts a cheque from
Janette Stewart, Communications and Promotions Coordinator, and Mike Nailor,
Trait Marketing Lead for Eastern Canada, of Monsanto resulting from the success
of Monsanto’s Technology Expo at the 2008 Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show.
Monsanto Canada Donates Over $11,000 for Rural Leadership Development
Farmers who attended Monsanto’s
Technology Expo may be surprised to learn
their visit wasn’t just an opportunity for them
to gain insight into the future of farming, but
also an opportunity to significantly influence
farming’s future.
Most of those who attended Canada’s
Outdoor Farm Show and signed up for
Monsanto’s tour likely knew very little about
the company’s pledge to donate five dollars
to leadership development in rural Ontario
for every participant who went through the
Monsanto tent. When the gates closed
on September 11 th at the popular show in
Woodstock, a total of 2,254 farmers had
completed the tour and Monsanto got out its
checkbook for 4-H Ontario and the Centre
for Rural Leadership. Together, the two
organizations received a total of $11,270
to advance their programs, which develop
the skills of future industry leaders. Mike
Nailor, Trait Marketing Lead for Eastern
Canada, says though the marketing team
never dreamed the Tech Expo would be
so well attended in its first year, they are
extremely pleased to be able to make such
a large contribution to these two important
organizations.
“We really wanted to do something
different this year at the farm show and
we wanted to do it in a way that was not
only meaningful to our growers and our
business, but also the entire agricultural
community,” said Nailor.
The Monsanto marketing team originally
set a goal of drawing 2,000 participants to
their location at the show, but wondered if
that was an overly ambitious goal.
“We really didn’t know if our expectations
for this project were realistic,” said Nailor,
adding that no one anticipated how much
work it would take to make this event a
success but the calls, emails, and letters
telling him how much value farmers have
seen in the Technology Expo, especially for
the next generation of farmers, have made
all that hard work worth it.
“We wanted this event to have a positive
impact on the whole agricultural industry
and it was important to us that organizations
like 4-H Ontario and the Centre for Rural
Leadership played a role in this look into
the future that we were trying to create.”
Julie Armstrong, Funding Coordinator for
4-H Ontario, says this financial contribution
from Monsanto will undoubtedly have a
positive impact for 4-H members in Ontario
and notes that it’s fitting that 4-H Ontario
will benefit from an agricultural company’s
experience of learning to do by doing.
“We have always appreciated the support
we receive from Monsanto Canada,” says
Armstrong. “They continuously find new
ways to help us enrich the experience we
offer to our members and we always look
forward to finding out what they will come
up with next.”
Armstrong says Monsanto has been
a major sponsor for many initiatives of 4-
H Ontario, including the Youth Adventure
Camp, Monsanto Volunteer Lunch at the 4-
H Ontario Conference and Annual Meeting,
Testing Rootworm Activity Program, and the
Ontario 4-H Foundation Annual West Golf
Tournament. She hopes the participants
of Monsanto’s Technology Expo are proud
of the support they have helped provide
for the next generation of farm leaders in
Ontario and looks forward to distributing
the funds to the many ongoing projects of
4-H Ontario.
Monsanto recently confirmed its 2009
corporate commitment to 4-H Ontario at
$15,000 and expects this amount to be
supplemented by other creative events
generated through its business activity in
Eastern Canada.

Happy New Year!
• Patty Lasby, President, Ontario 4-H Council
• John Core, Chair, Ontario 4-H Foundation
• Lyndon Stewart, Executive Director
The January edition of the Leadership in Action Magazine is an exciting edition to write for as
it allows us to celebrate the year past and more importantly share our excitement about the 2009
year.
In 2008 under the banner of 4-H Ontario we: accomplished greater project development
and distribution of new resources; launched the new online access to resources; delivered
specialized local volunteer training; accomplished a new direct-mailed membership card and
targeted communication program; and launched the next chapter of our volunteer recruitment and
screening processes. We also celebrated strong support from our sponsor partners, saw increased
volunteer enrolment, and benefitted from higher enrolment in regional and provincial leadership
camps and conferences.
The Ontario 4-H Foundation launched the Local Association Endowment Funds as well as the
new “Gift of Leadership” branded endowment material and resources. Golf Tournaments set a
new record; and donations to the local and provincial endowment funds have exceeded $100,000.
The Foundation returned over $30,000 directly into the 4-H program, its members and volunteers.
As we head into 2009, we are encouraged that many Associations are incorporating the five
Ontario 4-H Council strategic elements into their own annual plans. Launched in February 2006
they are:
PATTY LASBY
president@4-hontario.ca
John core
chair@4-hontario.ca
Volunteers – Members – Communications – Partnerships - Performance & Finance
The shared goals and results that come from these elements have a very positive effect on the
4-H program, be it at the Board, Staff, Association or Club level. We are also very supportive of
everyone adopting the 2009 Key Focus Areas of::
Marketing – Recruitment – Promotion – Retention – Risk Management
Ask yourself and your Associations these questions: Are we actively marketing the local 4-H
program? Are we open to recruiting new volunteers and members? Do we promote all that the
broader 4-H program offers? Are we successful at retaining our volunteers and members? Do our
communities know about the local Association Endowment Fund?
In 2009 we actively encourage you to “speak up” - with your local associations board of
directors; your 4-H Ontario Regional Specialist; the Executive Director; the President of the Ontario
4-H Council; or the Chair of Ontario 4-H Foundation. Working together we can create the shared
momentum to move mountains and accomplish our shared goals.
You’ve heard the saying that “4-H is the best kept secret!”. It’s time to change that. With your
help we can identify the opportunities to share the 4-H experience with more people, allowing them
to experience the wonderful benefits that those of us already in 4-H know so well.
We look forward to seeing many of you at the 2009 Conference and Annual Meetings from
February 27 to March 1, 2009. As we move forward into the New Year, know that any one of us
would welcome the opportunity to visit you in your community, to discuss any aspect of the 4-H
program, and to help you celebrate your achievements as you work toward your 2009 goals.
In closing, we trust this finds you and your families having had a wonderful Christmas. We wish
each of you a 2009 year full of good health, fun and success. Thank you for everything you do for
this great program!! You do make a difference!
