Could planning groups be facing extinction?
by Patt Bixby
The Lakeside Community
Planning Group is
urging Lakeside community
members to contact their
County Supervisor (Dianne
Jacob) in regards to a purposed
modification of the existing
planning group structure. Because
Lakeside, along with a
number of other communities,
is unincorporated, the Planning
Group is the place where people
can come and present their
projects, voice their opinions
and get community input.
The LCPG urges people to
contact their Supervisor before
February 29 and voice their
opinion on the importance of
Lakeside keeping it’s Planning
Group so that community
input is not lost. County Supervisor
can be reached at
diannejacob@sdcounty.ca.gov.
In 2011, the County Board
of Supervisors formed a red
Lakeside dates to remember
tape reduction task force to
examine the land development
permitting process and
identify opportunities for operational
improvements that
would result in more efficient
permit processing. On Dec.
7, 2011, the task Force presented
a report with a series
of recommendations to the
Board of Supervisors. During
the December meeting, the
board directed immediate
implementation of a subset
of the recommendations. The
staff was advised to evaluate
the implementation and return
on Feb. 9, 2012. One of
the recommendations relates
to the structure of community
planning groups and sponby
recommends modifying the
existing planning groups
structure or leave community
planning groups under
the County’s “umbrella”
with changes.
The Lakeside Planning
Group urges the community
to tell their County Supervisor
they want a voice between
the community and the
County. Keep the Lakeside
Planning Group as it is.
Behind the scenes at LMS
by Betty McMillen
Saturday School can be
fun and educational, at
least that’s what a group of
adults thought last Saturday
when Lakeside Middle School
Principal, Steve Mull, took
them on a behind the scenes
tour of the new and old multi
million dollar remodeling of
the school.
What started out as a small
group of Historical Society
members grew into an interested
crowd of 45 Lakeside
citizens, school board members
and even Dr Brian Bristol, the
School District’s new Superintendent.
Everyone was excited
about seeing the extensive
remodeling project, a dream
come true for the Principal
and Building Committee who
worked on the plans.
The front of the school has
had a dramatic change although
it is hard to see from
the street at this point due to
construction equipment and
screening.
The former bus circle has
been moved to the right of
the school so buses, parent’s
cars and walking students no
longer create a dangerous mix
competing for a quick exit.
In it’s place there is a large
quad area for multi uses such
as rallies, ASB gatherings and
band performances.
To the left of the school the
auditorium is in the same location
but the former kitchen and
teachers lounge have been
magicly transformed into an
elegant glass lobby entrance
for theater goers and it can
also be used as a meeting
room and other multi uses.
The school will be geared toward
theater arts ... a passion
of Mr. Mulls. He calls it “The
Jewel of Lakeside.” The inside
of the auditorium has taken on
an electonic transformation
with rows and rows of lights,
microphones, and sound system
which was donated by the
Lakeside Stadium Association.
The stage has been lowered
and enlarged to hold over 100
youthful actors. There is a grid
to hold scenery backdrops and
also new curtains.
Gone are the stacking chairs
and in their place rows of stadium
seating for 380 people,
the seating actually folds back
to the walls to make way for a
large dance floor.
It seems that everything has
been carefully planned out so
it has multi uses.
Behind the stage in what
used to be the Principals offices,
there is the “green room”
where actors ready themselves
for the stage. There is a wall
of art to honor Dr Steven
Halfacre, the former school
Superintendent, who worked
so hard to keep art alive in
Lakeside schools.
Since Performing Arts is the
focus of this school the dance
classes are geared toward theater
productions. They have
top notch bands and orchestras.
Even the wood shop
builds sets for the stage. Shop
Teacher, Cliff Mull, had to get a
special credential to teach this
class. He said that woodshop
isn’t going away but it is changing
with computer tecnology.
Most of the actual classrooms
are older, some from the 1950s
and even back to the 1930s,
but they have been modernized
with the latest learning
tools and every one has rows
of computers and a “Smart
Board” which is a modern
electronic version of a blackboard
and all the rooms are
interconnected by this technology.
No other school district in
the country has this, Mr Mull
said “It is unbelievable what
the kids are learning.” Teacher,
Mr Best, has one of the oldest
classrooms and he has taught
in there for over 20 years but
he was a leader in pushing for
the newest tecnology for the
students.
Motorcycle riders around the
included a ride by Rady Children’s
waved excitedly from the windows
as the bikers paced by.
It started as a request
when 13-year-old Josiah
Trujillo met P.J. Byrne
during a poker run to Rady
Children’s Hospital. Trujillo,
a big fan of Harley Davidson
motorcycles, suffers from Spina
Bifida. He asked Byrne if he
could get 3000 bikers to ride by
his house. Not wanting Trujillo
to be disappointed, he told the
youth he lived in Carlsbad,
not Sturgis, and asked if 100
would be okay, which Trujillo
said it would.
With motor-roaring engines,
helmets and jackets bearing
emblems from clubs all over
Southern California, and other
states it was the hearts full
of compassion that brought
more than 4000 bikers out
last Sunday for the “Ride For
Josiah” to ride by Trujillo’s
house. Encased on the front
porch, his big smile and silent
wave was a silent thank you
to the roar of thousands of
bikes. Many went up to greet
Trujillo in person and riders
were invited to park their
bikes in an adjacent field and
be treated to a lunch by the
Trujillo family and sponsors.
Bikers around the world
held the same compassion
to make a young boy’s wish
come true. Bikers from London
and 22,000 miles away
in Australia also rode for the
cause. Crystal Radcliffe fired
for the ride.
“All day long there were
endless bikes as far as the eye
Youth Of The Year Award
nominations now being
accepted
The City of El Cajon Teen
Coalition would like to recognize
youth for making a difference
in our community. If you
see, hear, or know of a youth
who has gone the extra mile
to improve the quality of life
in our community, take this opportunity
to acknowledge and
reward that effort. “The Success
of Tomorrow…Depends
on the Youth of Today!” How
Does This Work? The City of El
beyond what may be required
by school, and demonstrated
currently at the middle school
level (grades 6 th – 8 th ) and one
youth is based on their personal
merits and contributions and
is not intended to be limited
to their school involvement.
Cajon residents. Youth will be
For Health’s Sake
Know your medications
Winter travel season
is here, the American
Pharmacists
Association encourages consumers
to talk with their pharmacist
about their medications
before they pack their bags.
This will help ensure each
person knows the best way to
pack their medications, what
to do if the medication is lost
and anything to be aware of
with travel and the medication.
Travel disrupts healthcare
routines and the normal things
consumers do to take care of
themselves – such as adhering
to a medication regimen – can
sometimes fall from the top list
of priorities.
Here are some tips to help
travelers maintain a healthy
medication regime throughout
the travel season:
Organize a health kit
that contains all of your
prescription and over-thecounter
medications, herbal
supplements, vitamins
and minerals. Ensure that
medications are packed correctly
and pack ample medication
and equipment. Some
medications have special storage
instructions or require specific
dosing equipment. Always
carry your medications in the
original bottles in the carry-on
luggage if flying or crossing
borders.
Bring more medications
than expected to use. Talk
to your pharmacist about the
possibility of obtaining a medication
“vacation supply” from
your insurance company, he/
she may be able to help. Being
prepared for unexpected
extended travel helps ensure
safe and effective medication
use. It is also good to know
your insurance company’s
policy on medication transfers
and replacement supplies if
your medication is lost.
Pack a “Preventative
Medicine” Kit. Talk with the
pharmacist about any overthe-counter
medications that
should be packed for the area
of the world being traveled to.
Basics include: anti-diarrhea,
anti-nausea, antihistamine,
anti-motion sickness, mild laxative
or stool softener, medicine
for pain or fever and antibacterial/antifungal
cream/ointment.
Get up-to-date on any
vaccines that may be needed.
Make sure to get your annual
flu shot. If traveling overseas,
make sure all of the travel
vaccine recommendations put
out by the CDC are met.
.
Beware of “Drugged Driving.”
Certain medications can
impair perception, judgment
and reaction times causing a
hazardous driving situation.
Talk with your pharmacist
We welcome families of all ages!
Donald Adema, DO
(Board Certified
Family Practice)
Most Insurance
Accepted
about side effects your medication
may cause and whether
you can adjust your dosing
schedule to avoid times you
may need to operate a vehicle.
Carry an updated personal
medication and vaccination
record. This is a list of
prescriptions, over-the-counter
and herbal medications, how
to take them, and why. This
list should also contain an
up-to-date history of vaccinations.
If unexpectedly admitted
into a hospital, or must see
a healthcare provider while
traveling, the list can help
them understand your current
treatments. To download
a personal medication list
www.pharmacist.com/pmr.
Have a plan for adjusting
medication regimen.
Travel may require you to
adjust your medication regimen,
or when you take your
medication, for time and
routine changes. If you are
traveling across the country
and would normally take a
medication twice a day, for
example, you may need to adjust
that schedule to take your
medications approximately
twelve hours apart—which
may be earlier or later than
your first bedtime or morning
on another coast. Ask your
pharmacist about how to
alter your schedule to fit your
health-care needs.
Push your body.
Find your beat.
Be careful or avoid drinking
alcohol, especially
when flying or visiting cities
in higher altitudes. Alcohol
can interact with many prescription
and over-the-counter
medicines.
Ask your pharmacist if
there are any foods or beverages
that conflict with
current medicines. Travelers
are more inclined to eat unfamiliar
foods when traveling to
new cities or foreign countries.
Practice good hygiene,
get rest and eat well. Frequent
hand-washing/cleansing,
use of alcohol-based
hand sanitizer and coughing
/sneezing into your sleeve or
a tissue will protect you and
others. In addition, try not
to overdo it and not get run
down, eat right and drink
plenty of water (and depending
upon the location, bottled
water may be needed) are
good practices that can reduce
the risk of getting sick.
The American Pharmacists
Association, founded in 1852
Association, is a 501 (c)
Grossmont Healthcare District presents
scholarships to nursing students
The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD, a public
agency that supports various health-related community
programs and services in San Diego’s East County, has
presented $6,000 in scholarships to three nursing students
based on their community involvement and future plans
in the nursing profession. They include Karen Adams of El
Cajon, Melissa Foster of La Mesa and Linda Matheny of El
Cajon. Adams received $3,000, while Foster and Matheny
each received $1,500. All three are nursing students at
Grossmont College.
“We were impressed with each recipient’s career goals, as
well as their volunteer experiences,” said GHD board member
Michael Emerson, who served as chair of the Community
Grants and Sponsorships Committee, which reviewed the
scholarship applications.
Adams, who hopes to work in a hospital, clinic or school,
has traveled to Fiji and Nicaragua on relief assistance trips.
Foster, who wants to focus on preventing childhood obesity,
taught exercise at Murray Manor Elementary School in La
Mesa. Matheny, who inspires to help provide healthcare to
those without health insurance, has administered flu shots
to college students and supported fund-raising walks for
epilepsy research.
The GHD scholarships are named the Richard Bea RN
Memorial Nursing Scholarships in memory of former GHD
board member Richard Bea, a registered nurse who worked
at Grossmont Hospital for 18 years. Bea served on the GHD
board from 1996, including as board president, until his
death in 1999.
The scholarships are intended to encourage the development
of nurses new to the profession. Applicants are required
to have completed one year in a registered nursing program
approved by the National League for Nursing Accrediting
Commission and provide evidence of current enrollment
and community volunteer work, along with a letter of recommendation
and a 500-word essay on “The Future of Nursing
in My Community.” They also must reside within the GHD
boundaries for a minimum of one year, or have graduated
from a high school located within the District.
Inspiration
Trying to go somewhere, I ended up nowhere
Rev. James L. Snyder
It was one of those weeks
where, if I accomplished
anything that delicious
slice of information has completely
eluded the tiny gray
cells floating in my cranium. It
is not as if those little gray cells
had anything else to do.
As I suffused my weary body
into my La-Z-Boy chair, I knew
I was tired but I could not figure
out what I had done during the
week to make me this tired.
After all, it did not seem like I
had accomplished anything of
significance this week. I was trying
to do something, of course,
but I had absolutely nothing to
show for it.
A verse of Scripture began
‘A World of Enlightened Action’ the 15 th
Annual Gandhi-King Season for Nonviolence
The Gandhi King Season
for Nonviolence (SNV)
will commence for the 15 th
consecutive year on January
30, 2012 in cities across the
globe. The annual 64 day
campaign, co-founded in 1998
by Dr. Arun Gandhi and the
Association for Global New
Thought (AGNT), is an educational,
media and grassroots
awareness campaign spanning
the January 30 and April 4
memorial anniversaries of Mahatma
Gandhi and Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr.
The purpose of the campaign
is to focus education
and media attention on the
philosophy of attaining peace
through nonviolent action
as demonstrated by Gandhi,
King. Using an “omni-local”
model of citizen empowerment
in more than 900 cities in 67
countries since inception, the
program offers tools and training
to self-organizing groups
that use nonviolent principles
and practices to heal conflict in
families and communities. The
campaign is especially effective
in schools and congregations
where participants representing
diverse age groups, cultures,
religions and political ideologies
collaborate to identify
“local heroes of nonviolence,”
and help connect like-mined
agencies and initiatives within
the same community. The official
SNV Website, maintained
by AGNT conveners, offers
free to all participants, customized
programs, full resource
libraries, artwork, instructions,
curricula and extensive practical
toolkit.
The Season for Nonviolence
has been launched at the
United Nations each year from
1998 through 2012. These
events have brought forth
substantive endorsements and
commitments from the former
UN Secretary General, Kofi
Annan, the U.S. Ambassador
to India, Vice President Al
Gore, and the Director General
of UNESCO on behalf
of its Culture of Peace and
nonviolence appeal by the
Nobel Peace Laureates. The
theme for this year’s studentbased
program is “Global
Peace Through Social Media:
There’s an APP for That!”
Speakers will include students
from Susan B. Wagner High
School, and media guru,
Nipun Mehta, a young west
coast innovator who has redefined
social technologies
for volunteerism and compassionate
service.
Again, this year, the City
of El Cajon’s Mayor, Mark
Lewis, issued a proclamation
proclaiming the city’s support
for ‘A Season for Nonviolence’
urging all residents to participate
in local, national and
global campaigns to honor
those who are using nonviolence
to build communities
that respect the dignity and
work of every human being.
If you are interested in participating
in the Season for
Nonviolence, please contact:
Rev. Sharon Connors, Christ
Church Unity, 311 Highland
Avenue, El Cajon, CA 92020
– (619) 579-9586.
haunting me as I thought
about this. “Therefore to him
that knoweth to do good,
and doeth it not, to him it
is sin” (James 4:17). What
was I supposed to “doeth”
that I did not get around to
“doething”?
Of course, there was that
funeral I had this past week.
Unfortunately, I opened my
book to the wrong page and
begin the funeral by saying,
“Dearly beloved we are gathered
together here to unite
these two in holy matrimony.”
Holy macaroni! What a difference
the wrong page makes.
At least I was not officiating at
a wedding and said, “Ashes
to ashes, and dirt to dirt.”
Although, to be honest about
it, I have had some weddings
where I thought that phrase fit.
I was tempted, only for a
moment, to query the Gracious
Mistress of the Parsonage
but I feared she would tell me.
There is something to say about
mystery. Nothing is more mysterious
than the feminine side
of the marriage equation. Odd
isn’t it, that the marriage equation
is not always even.
As I reflected upon my week
past, I duly noted the activities
that occupied most of my week.
Apart from the funeral, I had
several hospital visits to make.
As is usually the case, people
conspire to go to the hospital at
the same time but never at the
same hospital. One even went
out of town to go to a hospital.
Other visits were made and
other activities attended. Certain
deadlines were staring me
in the face and I stared right
back at them defiantly. I am not
sure who won.
Services and Bible studies
needed to be prepared for
which can take up a lot of
time. Then, don’t you know
it; my truck is always out of
gas when I am in a hurry. I
suppose I could fill my tank up
when it got down to a certain
level, but where would the fun
be in that? Nothing compares
to the adrenaline of being in
a hurry and late for an appointment
and then running
out of gas.
Do not get me wrong here. It
is not that I do not enjoy giving
my wife a call on the cell phone
when stranded along the side
of the road. It is the highlight of
the stranded experience. Usually,
her response to my phone
call is what stresses me out.
“What,” she declares in that
sarcastic tone of hers, “have
you run out of gas again?”
It is her theatrical use of the
word “again” that I believe
could easily earn her an Oscar.
I once presented her with
an Oscar Meyer wiener, but
she did not enjoy the joke.
Personally, I thought it was a
great joke and I really did not
appreciate her reaction. Needless
to say, I have not repeated
that sin, although temptation is
what it is.
I suppose I did do things and
accomplished something this
past week, but it really does
not explain why I am as tired
as I am tonight. I can remember
there was a time that I did not
even know the meaning of
tired. I got tired all right; I just
did not know the meaning of
the word tired.
Then the whole thing
dawned on me. It was almost
like being hit on the head with
an iron skillet by you know
whom. The lights flashed. The
lightbulb went on. I had an
epiphany to end all epiphanies.
At this point, I am surprised
my wife did not get the jump
on me with this one. The reason
I am so tired is because I
am old. There, I said it. I have
come to that point in life where
being young is a fond fading
memory.
As this bit of information began
marinating in my cranium,
it had a very comforting effect.
Up to this point, I had been
worrying about the fact that I
was tired and I could not link
that condition with any specific
activity. As is usually the case,
there are good sound reasons
for everything. I began to look
at my tired condition in a completely
different light.
I have earned my being tired.
It is something I have worked
for all my life. Now, here it
is. I am now collecting those
wonderful dividends from all
that activity of the past.
As I thought about this, a
marvelous verse of Scripture
came to my mind. “The glory
of young men is their strength:
and the beauty of old men
is the gray head” (Proverbs
20:29 KJV ).
Being tired is the crown of a
lifetime of activity.
The Rev. James L. Snyder
is pastor of the Family of God
Fellowship. The church web site
is www.whatafellowship.com.
to Have Fun
Dear Dr. Luauna
My mother goes to church
and she is constantly
lecturing me about my life. I
am young, I just turned 21 and
all I want to do is have fun with
my friends. I have my own job,
my own car and my own apartment.
She is always scaring me
about partying in Tijuana and
Hollywood. I am a good person
and I believe in God. I wish my
mom would leave me alone
and let me enjoy myself.
Signed, Girl Just Wants
Dear Girl Just Wants to Have Fun,
There are two different issues at work in your letter, the
natural concern of a mother for her young daughter and for
your spiritual well-being. As a mother of a son and daughter,
I also cautioned my children about the dangers of the world.
Parents are compelled by our God-given nurturing and
love for our kids. As Christian mothers, we are also driven
to our knees for the safety, protection of our children and
grandchildren.
The world we live in today is not safe. I do not have room
in this column to list the grave dangers all around, which are
intensified in the party environments you mentioned. Just
watching the news is enough to bring me to prayer for all
young people. I cannot begin to tell you about the prayer
requests and counseling sessions I hold with parents whose
teenagers and young adults fall into harmful and addictive
behavior that started out as fun. From experience I can tell
you I became a Christian in my early 20s, your age. I saw
with my own eyes the consequences of the “party” life on
my family and friends all around. Alcoholism, drug addiction,
unwanted children, suicide, depression, violence, financial
problems, etc, this is not an exaggeration at all. My own
husband was murdered when he went to a bar with his
friends. There he met a married woman and went home
with her. Her husband came home and caught them; my
husband was assaulted and died. I was left a young widow
and single mother.
In John 1:15-17, these verses caution believers in Christ
not to love the world. Matthew 15:8-9, Jesus taught that we
cannot say we are Christians with our lips and not mean it
with our heart. Romans 10:9-10, “that if you confess with
your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that
God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For
with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the
mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Many people
claim to believe in God and Jesus, this verse clearly says the
confession of our mouth must accompany our belief which
should produce righteous behavior.
I am sure your mother loves you; she only has your best
interest at heart for your safety and your spiritual well-being.
You can have good, clean fun and serve the Lord with all
your heart, the choice is yours for your life and your eternity.
Please come to church, living for Jesus is an adventure and
fun with no regrets!
The Champions of Tomorrow
by Chuck Karazsia
“The Champions of Tomorrow,” six bouts of live pro boxing presented
by Bobby D Presents in association with Barron Entertainment
and Jorge Marron Productions, in partnership with Gonzalez
Sports Academy, takes place Friday, Jan. 27 at the Gonzalez Sports
Academy – a 29,000 square-ft complex located in Chula Vista, CA.
“We will feature boxers from all over San Diego County and
Tijuana,” said boxing promoter Bobby DePhilippi. “South Bay
fighters will fight in front of their family, friends and neighbors. The
facility is equipped to learn, practice and train the fundamentals
of baseball and other sports.”
In the much anticipated eight-round main event Oscar Godoy (4-1,
2 KO’s), a 21-year-old welterweight from Watsonville, California –
by way of Colonia Libertad Tijuana, Mexico – hopes to continue
his winning ways of three consecutive victories. He squares off
against hard punching Joshua Marks (7-3, 7 KO’s). A native from
the state of Georgia who made Imperial Valley his home, Marks’
seven professional victories were all fought and won in Mexico.
A special event attraction will feature National City’s own Adrian
Vargas (5-0, 3 KO’s). He will risk his untarnished record against
Gabriel Medina of Hemet, California, who is making his professional
debut. South San Diego resident, Pablo “Bronco” Armenta
(6-1-1, 2 KO’s) faces Omar Sanchez (3-2, 1 KO) in a battle of
featherweights. Making a much anticipated pro debut is top amateur
Jonathan Quiroz of Vista, California. He will trade punches
with Anthony Briones (0-1).
Tijuana super bantamweight boxer Christian “Huevo” Bojorquez
(4-0, 1 KO) will slug it out with Raymondo Chacon (3-1, 2 KO’s)
of Los Angeles. Rounding out the event will be Pablo Copul (6-2,
4 KO’s) from the Mexican Yucatan. His opponent had yet to be
determined.
The fight is a benefit event for the Athletes of the Future Foundation
(AFF). A percentage of the profit is to be donated to nonprofit
organization. Many celebrities are expected to be in attendance.
“The response we have been getting is great,” DePhilippi said. “I’m
very excited to bring live professional boxing back to Chula Vista.”
Ticket prices start at $30 and can be purchased directly at the
venue, or by calling (619) 420-8866. Tickets also may be purchased
online at www.SanDiegofights.com. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Live boxing begins at 8 p.m.
— AT THE MOVIES —
Action packed aerial bantering and culture in ‘Red Tails’
Review by Diana Saenger
IIt’s been more than 20
years since HBO made
the movie The Tuskegee
Airmen detailing the all-black
World War II aerial squadron
who surprised their comrades
with their flying skills. For almost
that long, George Lucas
has wanted to make the first
of a three-part story about the
Tuskegee Airmen, but studios
balked about the story’s allblack
cast. So Lucas threw in
his own money to make Red
Tails, the first of that series,
and if it’s profitable, Lucas will
proceed on.
Most of the backlash about
the movie is more about the
simple plot and poor dialogue,
and not the actual acting. The
332nd Fighter Group is stationed
in Italy and assigned to
fly their P-51 Mustangs painted
with distinct red tails in support
of other American forces. Major
Emmanuel Stance (Cuba
Gooding Jr.) and Colonel A.
J. Bullard (Terrence Howard)
share command of this outfit.
Stance is to make sure his guys
stand up to their assignments
while Bullard spends time at
the Pentagon fighting for his
flyers to have the same rights
as their while equivalents.
Screenwriters John Ridley
and Aaron McGruder have a
high bar with creating strong
personalities of actors that
other than Gooding Jr. and
Howard, which many moviegoers
are not familiar with.
Squadron leader Marty “Easy”
Julian (Nate Parker) has problems
squaring his shoulders to
lead, and that along with his
own flying missions soon cause
him to take a flask of alcohol
with him and often rely on it
too much.
Joe Little (David Oyelowo)
is a hot shot on ground and
off. He’s always the one when
Marty says to head home,
that takes off on his own for
one last blaze of bullets. He’s
ahead of the curve in town,
too. While the black soldiers
are not even welcome in the
club with other soldiers, Joe
lands Sofia (Daniela Ruah), a
very beautiful young lady who
surprisingly falls for Joe even
though they don’t speak each
other’s language. I found this
plotline a little hard to believe.
Samuel “Joker” George (Elijah
Kelley) is a real kick, both
on the ground and in the
air. Meanwhile there’s David
“Deke” Watkins (Marcus T.
Paulk), who carries a picture
of an African-American Savior
he calls “Black Jesus” and
relies on for the squadron’s
safe return back to the base.
Ray “Junior” Gannon (Tristan
Wilds), the junior man in the
cockpit, is always trying to
measure up to his comrades.
These actors and the entire
men who portray the Tuskegee
Airmen do a fine job with
Red Tails
Review by Diana Saenger
1. HUGO
liked the creative story-telling
– except for the over-
I
the-top station attendant role;
impressed by the Cinematography
by Robert Richardson
who captures the magic of the
story well; the Production by
Dante Ferretti was impressive;
Kingsley and Asa Butterfield
gave excellent performances;
loved how Scorsese moved it
into the classic film era.
2. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
I’m not a Woody Allen fan
but I thoroughly enjoyed this
what they have. That’s partly
because when the actors arrived
on location, they were
driven to a warehouse on the
outskirts of Prague and shown
their accommodations – a
sparsely furnished military style
tent with only a small heater
to warm them, just like the
original Tuskegee Airmen lived
in during the war. Stripped of
all electronic devices, given a
blanket and a bunk, the real
work began.
Even though Lucas went
all out with interviewing real
Tuskegee Airmen, hands-on
training for the men in actual
P-51s and hiring Industrial
Light & Magic and other
companies to handle special
film – there’s romance, intrigue,
the time travel is fascinating,
totally creative characters
from the past as well as
obnoxious ones in the present,
it’s funny with great performances
– what’s not to enjoy?
3. THE DEBT
In addition to terrific performances
by a strong cast,
John Madden (Proof) deserves
credit for his superb direction,
and screenwriters Matthew
Vaughn, Jane Goldman and
Peter Straughan must be recognized
for their tight, compelling
screenplay adaptation. But I
think the real visionary who
makes this film haunt and
enthrall is cinematographer
Ben Davis (Hannibal Rising).
He creates dark shadows that
show just enough in a scene
to create a chilling edginess
without revealing too much
plot. His eye behind the camera
is a great mirror to the
words on the page.
4. MONEY BALL
The adaptation is smart, the
story is interesting and one
effects, to me the film still felt
boggy and a paint-by-number
plot.
many knew nothing about; Pitt
is the best he’s been in a long
time, and Jonah Hill is superb.
5. WIN WIN
McCarthy pens his stories
like making a cake. The batter,
though tasty enough by itself,
serves a much bigger purpose.
McCarthy takes ordinary
people we can relate to, throws
hurdles in their paths and takes
them on a journey that in the
end is as sweet as frosting on
a cake.
6. WARRIOR
This film is much deeper
than about fighting. It’s about
“redemption, reconciliation
and the power of the human
spirit.”, director Gavin
O’Connor knows how to get
a heartwarming and crowdcheering
story out of a supposed
sports movie. The excellent
cast helped him do the
same with this film.
7. THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED
No “father knows best”
Cooking up Memories at Bonny’s Cafe
Celebrating 18 Years
in El Cajon!
However, some of the fight
scenes are very intense, and
if the film does nothing else
world in this one – the generation
gap is here, and it’s a fact.
The adapted screenplay lays
out this story so well, and J.K.
Simmons as the dad, and Lou
Taylor Pucci as the mentally
challenged son, are wonderful
in portraying the ups and
downs of their relationship
based only on music.
8. TAKE SHELTER
What I liked about this film
was that it surprised me, a
couple in love with a daughter
who has a hearing loss and
money problems in the family
seemed so cliché, but when
Curtis, played remarkably well
by Michael Shannon began
to have dreams that affected
everything he thought and
did, I was glued to the story.
Even though his desperation
is quiet it speaks volumes in
every action. Quite compelling.
9. THE ARTIST
While I found the film entertaining,
avant-garde and
All major credit cards accepted
than educate new generations
about these incredible heroic
men, then I say see Red Tails.
well made with a great cast, it
didn’t wow me as best film of
the year, because I review silent
films and am aware of how well
a film can tell a story without
sound, but also know people
who refuse to see subtitled
films will rarely change their
minds, so making this a best
film of the year I feel would be
a disservice.
10. THE HELP
A great adaptation of the
book, the dichotomy of the
past era of 1963 where life
was like a grade 6 rafting
ride – a thrill a minute for
some, a turbulent nightmare
for others – was highly
interesting. Production by
Mark Ricker was great, the
cast incredible, and you
could really feel the plight
of these maids. There’s a
lot of emotional heart here.
Director/Producer
Shawn Levy is a
well-known name
among moviegoers giving audiences
some of the most successful
films which to date have
grossed more than 1.7 billion
dollars worldwide. Those include
Date Night, two Night
At the Museum films, The
Pink Panther, Cheaper By The
Dozen, Big Fat Liar and more.
Levy was the director of Real
Steel, the heartfelt story about
an absentee father (Hugh Jackman)
trying to reconnect with
his 11-year-old son (Dakota
Goyo) through the sport of robot
boxing. The film has done
nearly $300 million at the box
office world wide. Levy was
Q. How hard was it to get
Hugh Jackman to be lead in
Real Steel?
SL: He’s a great actor and
very accessible, and I found
him really interesting. He did
want to make sure the movie
was about more than robots
before he signed on. He’s
genuinely a really nice guy and
easy to work with. He makes
the entire cast feel at ease.
Q. Why was the topic of
MMA fighting appealing to
you?
anything I’ve previously done.
You have to leave it to the
audience to master the technical
complexities of the film.
There’s a lot to the thoroughness
and beauty of aesthetics.
And whether the viewing is a
second or third in ones own
reveal different aspects. There
is so much going on you have
to allow your eyes to wonder.
Q. Why do you think audiences
embrace it so much?
SL: I didn’t know who fans
were most impassioned about
in the film but we got positive
feedback from parents and
families. Especially fathers and
sons, and I heard that boys
are now collecting every robot
that’s in the movie. I also was
told that fathers cried in the
final fight. Even robot boxing
fans found it warm hearted.
camera crews to feel they were
in the ring?
SL: Yes, so we had to precapture
the fights with real human
fighters in a mo-cap stage.
far as the future, it didn’t seem
there was too much to make it
seem like 2020. I didn’t want
the future to feel futuristic or
the movie to feel distant from
us. I wanted it to feel accessible
and the emotions to resonant.
Q. How much extra control
did you have over the Blu-Ray
release – there doesn’t seem to
be anything missing.
SL: While working on the
film we shot some of the extra
scenes we’d need. I really
wanted to give viewers the
presence of sound and image
as broad and as profound as
we could. The extras really
go in-depth behind the scenes
and visit every aspect of the
production. The details and
vivid tech design are some of
the best I’ve seen.
Q. How lucky were you
to find such a good actor in
Dakota Koto?
SL: He was a real find. Very
sweet. He just did a visit to Japan
for the toy premier, and it
was quite a trip, but he handled
it fine. He’s a well-raised kid.
— ON THE MENU —
North of the Border pleases the palate
menu items. Beverage options
offer several choices including
domestic and imported beer.
Enchilada burrito surrounded by chips.
Tim Babbitt, the Food and
Beverage Manager of North of
the Border, is partly responsible
for the restaurant’s success.
He’s a moving machine, constantly
checking on diners to
make sure their food is right
and enjoyable; keeping the
room looking top shape and at
times helping the staff so that
all customers get first rate food
and service.
by Diana Saenger
North of the Border
is a new restaurant
at Viejas Casino on
the upper level. Open three
weeks, North of the Border is
drawing raves from customers
for its food and décor. The stylish
and intimate space offers
much for the eye to see from
walls with wonderful graphics,
wall covering in what looks like
snake skin and colorful titles
covering a pole that announces
tacos. The lightening is soft
and focused and even the
multi-colored floor boards are
vibrant and add atmosphere
to the room.
Casino Shift Manager Lou
DiBella said the restaurant is
doing well. “We’re very proud
that all the design and work
was done in-house,” he said.
“We’re getting lots of good
feedback about it.”
The menu is simple, but
the food far exceeds that of a
typical taco shop, yet at very
reasonable prices. Six different
tacos are offered, none over
$5.25. One diner told me she
really enjoyed her fish taco
and found it very fresh. Burritos
come in 11 choices and
the A LA Carte menu features
tostadas, quesadillas and side
options. A help-your-self condiment
bar at the front lets eaters
finish off their own plates.
Combination Plates come
with rice and beans and offer
several choices of items
including carne asada fries.
I was surprised by the Carne
Asada plate I ordered that
came with rice and beans and
several side condiments. The
Carne Asada was the best
tasting and most tender I have
ever had. There was plenty of
food for only $7.50. The menu
items are excellently seasoned
and inspired by a blend of
flavors and spices from North
of the Border. Viejas Sou Chef
Roger Hernandez is partially
responsible for the fine tasting
“I’m really enjoying this
restaurant,” he said. “It’s fun,
we have great food, a great
staff and it’s a terrific spot for
our guests to set and relax and
enjoy the ambiance of the
Casino.”
North of the Border is open
Sunday – Thursday, 10 a.m. –
10 p.m., Friday and Saturday,
10 a.m. – 2 a.m. Patrons are
reminded everyone must be 18
years of age or older to dine in
the casino.
OF GREENVILLE
Vicki Lightle as Personal Representative of the
Estate of Izetta Wilson, Petitioner, vs. Patricia
D. Lyons, Harold Wilson, Pamela J. McCain
and Tori Ann Facemire, Respondents. IN RE:
Estate of Izetta Wilson
The Petitioner would respectfully show unto
the Court as follows:
That Petitioner is the duly appointed Personal
Representative of the Estate of Izetta Wilson,
deceased.
That at the time of decedent’s death decedent
had a Will which has been filed with the
Greenville County Probate Court.
That the Will of decedent makes provision for
various items but contains no residuary clause
and therefore Petitioner alleges that, except
for those items designated, the property of
deceased must pass pursuant to the South
Carolina Code of Laws regarding intestacy.
That all of the intestate heirs of the decedent
have been made parties to this action, Tori
Ann Facemire being the sole child of James
R. Facemire, deceased, a son of the decedent.
That the Will directs that Harold Wilson is
to receive the automobile specifying a 1992
Cavalier, although at the time of the decedent’s
death, she did not own a 1992 Cavalier but did
own a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire which Petitioner
alleges should go to Harold Wilson, it being
the intent of the decedent for Harold Wilson
to have her vehicle.
That, subject to payment of all claims against
the estate, administration expenses, and after
making distribution of assets as directed in the
Will, all remaining assets should pass to the
intestate heirs.
WHEREFORE, Petitioner prays as follows:
That the Court determine the intestate heirs
of the decedent;
That the Court find that the decedent died
intestate as to all properties not otherwise
identified to the Will;
That the Court find that it was the intent of
the decedent to convey to Harold Wilson the
automobile which she owned at the time of
her death; and
For such other and further relief as this Court
may deem just and proper.
You have been sued. The court may decide
that you can use for your response. You can
find these court forms and more information
